We built a car that you drive with real-life video game lag, and used it for an ill-advised, mostly-unscientific experiment about motion sickness.
In case it wasn't obvious: we did this in a private area away from public roads and other traffic, and I insisted on more safety checks than William and Michael would normally have. Don't try this unless you're doing the same!

I know you didn't ask, but I get into this unhealthy cycle of: push it close to the deadline, think the deadline is too close and say "I'll do it in the morning, after the deadline", and then just completely forgo doing the assignment because the deadline has been passed.

Abstract;
An experiment was performed to test the effects of imagery delay on the comfort and capability of a person performing a task. Participants where asked to drive a specialised car where the drivers side had been blacked out, instead the driver had to rely on a video feed from an external camera which enabled the introduction of a variable delay. The test was repeated for a range of delays and the effects on the drivers conform and abilites where measured.
We found that for delays on the order of 1 second or greater the delay is such as to not cause discomfort to the driver but did reduce their driving performance, while for delays on the order of miliseconds nausea was induced as well as general discomfort. Based on our findings we recommend the minimisation of latency in feeds from external cameras into a vehicle.
You must be able to get use to this or else it doesn't occur if the controller is stationery because there would be a time lag controlling military drones and unmade Luna/Mars explorer probes.

this reminds me a driving simulator I tried once that emulates the effects of drunk driving, with delayed inputs, blurred vision and less precise steering.
That's the expensive way of doing it. It's much cheaper to just drink and drive.

Or GTA 5, if you actually have a drink in-game... but because of how time works in game, in order to experience it you have to drink until you're drunk enough and then run (or drunkenly stagger as quickly as possible) out of the house and into a car before it wears off

For those who think Tom said "Where is the shifter" just because it was automatic, think again. Actually it's not due to the car being automatic (which it is), but having a column gear shifter...which many people do not have experience with. It looks about the same if it is automatic or manual. The shift lever is around where the window wiper column is, this is due to the car having a middle front seat and there not being room for a gear shifting lever (automatic or manual) on the floor. Not many modern cars have them anymore (but they are still common in trucks and work vans) I know this because my grandmother has that same car, but the sedan version. Also, my Toyota Tundra has the same.

A collab with three of my favorite "scientists" on RUclips. I love you guys, and this was AWESOME to watch.
I find it really interesting how there aren't many studies like this, particularly where time is the variable the experiment is trying to find. I think this kind of exploration teaches us a lot about how motion sickness works, even though it's not a "legitimate scientific experiment." I would have never guessed it's right above the .17 second time that humans start feeling motion sick. I thought it was something around a second or two, but I guess it makes sense that there is a blatant disconnect in the gray area, between knowing you're being lagged and not being lagged at all.
It's kind of similar to when I was attempting to play an instrument through my computer without using a Digital-Analog Converter (DAC), At different sampling rates you can increase and decrease the amount of delay and you typically want to aim for less than .11 seconds, .17 being the absolute limit where you can actually separate the two distinctly (i.e. the action of pressing a key and receiving a sound are seamless under .11, manageable at .17, and anything above that feels like a large delay).
Really, an experiment is the only way to test this kind of thing because you never know what it actually feels like until you do the real thing.

When I saw the title on William's video, before I saw this one, I thought the experiment was delaying the steering, brakes, and gas. It would be much harder to do, but could really throw people off. If you've ever stepped on the gas in neutral you know what I mean. Your body expects movement, there is none

This project went way too smoothly for a Micheal and William project, I guess you were a voice of reason.
Tom's camera persona is so uncomfortable around the two reprobates but in the candid shots you can tell he's having fun to at least some extent lmao
I've worked as a motion cueing engineer for full flight simulators for years. Keeping the projected out of the window view from the cockpit moving in sync with the movement of the motion platform the cockpit enclosure and visual dome are mounted onto is paramount to avoid motion sickness! There's a few modelling tricks of the trade to give more realistic feelings of sustained acceleration for takeoffs and landings which when tuned poorly give you delayed or prolonged acceleration cues which can make you instantly motion sick. Worst I was responsible for was one of our test engineers who after a single braking sequence had to go have a lie down and shortly there after had to leave for the day!

I find this rather fascinating . I used to get very motion sick from artificial movement in VR but one day it just clicked and it no longer affects me anymore and can play for hours without breaking a sweat. It really makes me wonder how I would fair in a situation like this.
