To the viewer empathizing with him, you feel as though you are in danger as well. In Tiana’s the narrative is telling you, “let’s do a conga line!” As far as “thrill” and plot relevance, Splash definitely wins. This certainly has to do, in part, with the fact that the ride was designed to fit the narrative, which put Tiana’s at a disadvantage anyway. But they definitely reduced tension or “fear factor” (at least for little kids) to make it more appealing to a wider audience, at least on paper. Probably not the best choice, as Disney was never meant to be “easy viewing,” but an adventure. Personally, this is what concerns me the most. In Disney’s attempt to “universalize” or “sanitize” their work as a means of being inclusive or inoffensive, it has actually become much harder for guests to enter into the world that is supposed to be for them. This is a paradigm shift in Disney’s philosophy and there’s not much anyone can do about it. At least that’s my opinion.

The theme and music in my opinion doesn’t fit the track itself very well. If they would’ve just built Tiana a whole brand new dark ride then it would’ve fit a whole lot better. One of the best things about Splash Mountain was the music, it went so well with each section of the ride. Welcoming riders with happy music like “How do you do”, then changing the tune to something more dark and serious once getting to the vultures and the final drop, then finishing with happy music again like “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Da”. I feel like Tiana’s garbage just had happy joyous music throughout the entire ride. At least Splash Mountain took riders literally through a ride of emotions. @MegKnightus Splash mountain didn't have a great story either bc it's hard to follow but I've you ride it enough or know the movie it's pretty simple So Bear Rabbit is being chased by Breat Fox and Brear Bare who are incompetent and can't find him so Bear Rabbit goes to the 'laughing place ' (after the 2nd drop ) to basically go party but he gets stuck in honey and brear fox finds him (final drop ) brear Rabbit tricks brear fox by saying that if he throws him down the mountain into the brear patch he'll never escape but becuse hes little he can and then he celebrates at the end .
My biggest problem is tension: Splash: this rabbit’s bouta be cooked and falls into the briar patch, Death crows heighten danger as you drop with him into certain death Tiana: you big now! Party timeee 🎊! Have fun!!🌼🌻🌸 It’s just.. not fun anymore

My only real problem with the new version of the ride is the buildup to the drop. Splash did it so much better, giving it an actual narrative that made the buildup to the drop foreboding. Why did the new version leave out Doctor Facilier and his spirits for this part? He was one of the best parts of Princess and the Frog and would've been great for that. Instead of that multicolored light on the way up imagine a projection that had his spirits swirling all around as you went up there with "Are you ready?" going in the background.
Genuinely the biggest issue with the retheme is that the existing ride system is just such a _terrible_ match for the story they're trying to tell, and they don't work well together at all. If they didn't want to commit to being a darker thrill ride, why reuse a thrill ride set up with those darker story beats in mind?
@@whittadeandkendra2772 Lol ironic you say that. "The Originals" vampires from NOLA used to say "always and forever" as their motto. But yeah, Splash all the way despite me loving the NOLA vibe.
One of my most distinct childhood memories is riding Splash Mountain when I was five. I remember the creepiness and feeling of entrapment in that final tunnel before the big drop 100% added to my suspense, it had my heart racing I was so scared, and I LOVED it. It was thrilling in a way few things were when I was that age. There’s a reason I remember the feeling so well even though I was so young. I feel as though they could have done something similar with this rebrand while still keeping it light. Get kids’ hearts racing by having Dr. Facilier laughing near the peak of the drop, and fill the tunnel with the crazy colors and shadow minions he summons during his songs, which they could do using the same lighting mechanism they already have. I guarantee that would make the thrill of the ride much more memorable to younger kids than just the anticipation of the drop alone would, all while still making it fun and light for them.
My main issue with Tiana's is all of the giant screens that should have been practical animatronics. Even if the fireflies were just on strings moving up and down (for example) it still would have been better than staring at a giant ipad.
As a Louisiana native, I cannot put into words how angry I am that they not only got rid of Splash Mountain, but made a cheap-o discount dollar store reject version of Louisana as its replacement which does LA absolutely ZERO favors since it also breaks down a lot.
Interesting that at the top of the splashdown the water stream on Tiana's side is broken; the boat is going down a dry slide. I understand how some of the complex new animatronics hastily installed may have malfunctioned; but as the flume itself is unchanged why was it malfunctioning all summer too?
Tiana starts waaaaay stronger! Slight edge to Splash once you get inside after the 1st drop. After the 2nd drop I just like Splash more, it gives more emotional scope. But I do enjoy what Tiana did there. From the final drop on I have to give it to Splash though. Tiana has more life there, but splash had the better song. The very ending is a wash, I like the frogs with the city landscape, but prefer brear rabbit at the very very end lol
For me. It depends on its lore and its lighting and music. not its landscape nor its outside, tianas also used music from the movie, so I like splasher better. But you do you, im not complaining!
Tiana's starts and ends well, but completely collapses in the middle because it has no real story holding the thrills up. Instead of the thrills complementing and accentuating the story, they clash with it.
I went on Splash Mountain in Japan recently and it really makes me miss the ride in California. I haven’t been on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure yet, but from what I have seen Splash Mountain wins in a long shot.
As much I do love BOTH "Song of the South" and "The Princess and The Frog", I really wish Disney could've left the OLD Splash Mountain the way it was, and put the "Princess and the Frog" Ride somewhere else in the Parks!
@@Yeat602 It's by no means perfect and absolutely has portions that have not aged well, but the parts that do work have a lot of heart to them. Splash Mountain only worked as well as it did because Song of the South had enough going for it to work as a foundation.
I've never experienced the original Spash Mountain, but I did ride Tiana's Bayou. I won't lie. The ride felt kind of lackluster. It felt like it was lazily slapped together in comparison to all of the other rides at Magic Kingdom. I liked the Princess and the Frog movie, but Disney really dropped the ball when it came to this ride. They even did the collectible pin a dirty by featuring every major character, BUT Tiana on it! This was almost as bad as them _literally_ pulling a dirty by featuring Tangled as a set of RESTROOMS instead of an actual attraction!
Funny now that you mentioned Tangled, right at the area where you meet Anna and Elsa, that used to be a meet and greet place for Rapunzel and Eugene. And I LOVED it so much because Tangled was my most favorite Disney Princess movie! My heart broke when it got replaced with the Anna and Elsa meet up.
I hate to know what became of everything that was in the previous final scene. The steamboat, all of those animatronics... I really hope they weren't trashed.
@@robSmith-be4jlyou don’t get it, all the money used for the props in the ride previously would be wasted in this garbage of an attraction. Not to mention that the props costs way more for the theme before this ride.
I love the new version of this ride. Kids pointed and smiled in glee as they were riding when we went. I’ve ridden the one before this, and it’s not that big of a difference. It’s practically the same ride but with the clear vibes of dark New Orleans and the movie💚🐸
It feels too happy now, the moments before the drop are supposed to be dark and chilling, they just slapped lasers in the lift hill and called it a day, it’s lazy and cheap, they should have just left splash the way it was, now time for the real competition, Tiana vs Jurassic World the ride at universal studios, they got the drop right, they make it scary, people get offended too easily these days and need to stop being so sensitive

I'm not trying to argue that Splash wasn't dark in some scenes. Of course it's dark, it's a dark ride! 🙄 I was just pointing out the difference between the first thing the rider sees and when entering the mountain for both versions of the attraction)
Splash was so cool, that scene before the drop and burrows lament gives me chills and makes me nerd out. Idk what the hell tiana is going for a guardians vibe? It’s a party? I’m not sure 😂😂😂.
I rode it recently and #1: it went too fast to enjoy anything going on or appreciate the animatronics. Splash Mountain felt like it was 5 minutes longer than Tiana’s; #2: I don’t remember any of the music, whereas How Do You Do stuck in my head for 25 years. Seriously, I thought about that song all the time. And #3: there definitely was no tension for the drop and nothing leading up to it. Makes the terrifying drop pointless. Tiana’s should have just been a flat boat ride with no drops. Given these factors, I probably won’t ride it again. It’s a lot of work to prepare for getting soaked with not enough payoff. 😊For me, at least.
that's a cool side by side comparison. I recently went on the Tiana's ride and got the front seat. Its been many years since I've rode Splash mountain, so most of it I do not remember. thanks for sharing.
6:06 Wow the difference between the water pressure on the falls is huge. I like Tiana’s version of the ride much better, but I don’t like the waterfall having less water.
I went on it last weekend (My daughter is a cast member) and we got soaked! I have never gotten so wet on that ride before! So not to worry it's plenty full and you WILL get very wet. (Thankfully we brought a change of clothes, including under ware) Overall it was cool, but I do have to admit I'd like Splash Mountain better. But I also remember when they opened Splash Mountain (I was 12) and how excited I was as it was the biggest/new ride they had opened in a while.
I mean im not sure if they mightve changed the splash levels at the time you went, byt when me and my gf went, we got DRENCHED. I have never been more soaked on a water coaster. We needed to buy extra clothes because of how soaked we were. We went roighly the first week the ride was open for cast and magic members. The ride was really fun, but i do hope they reduce the splash level because that was a little too much lol.
The water coming down the drop is an effect that can be temperamental, so it was likely just misbehaving on the day this was filmed. I've seen that it does work/still exists!
I just rode it last week and got soaked. Much more than we ever have before when it was splash mountain. I was wondering if it had a raised water level. When you watch this video each time there is a “splash zone” the new version seems to have a much larger splash confirming my suspicion. Thanks for the video.
I loved Splash Mountain, but like, this isn’t terrible at all. People were acting like there were big chunks of unfinished areas, but the dark and tableau elements are all the same. Also, point of note: this is not a “Classic” ride in the sense that it’s from the first two decades. It went up in 1984; long after Walt had died.
"Classic" refers to specific examples of a given medium that will be held in high regard for a long time to come. While some classic attractions are indeed older, there are still examples of newer attractions that can be held in that same regard (Splash Mountain being of particular note because of how its design heavily influenced other thrill rides going forward). TBA is not a modern Pirates or Haunted Mansion tier attraction; it joins the likes of Stitch's Great Escape and Rocket Rods in terms of poorly recycling their (much better) predecessors.
Splash Mountain had charm, animatronics, & had parts of terror, that was necessary for a log flume For Tiana's Bayou Adventure, half of the indoor section is just screens, the plot is more confusing, there is absolutely no terror, & it just feels like a cheap remake. Splash Mountain wins Tiana's Bayou Adventure should of remained in the scrapbooks
Splash Mountain had that fear of what was gona happen next, even if you knew. Sigh...another classic ride Disney changed because a few people complained 😢
Not a bad ride, but Splash is just sooo much better in almost every way. That finale scene might be the only real competition Splash has with this new ride, I think it’s absolutely incredible. But other than that, the animatronics aren’t as animated and there’s not as many and the music was far catchier in splash (but it’s still pretty good at tiana’s)

@@KekerikiGreen ...It was? The whole ride built up to a big dramatic final drop. That's why the ride was set up and paced the way it was, with the thrill of the final drop as its whole thematic focus. I swear the core defense of TBA relies almost entirely on basic media illiteracy.
The core problem with the ride is that the existing ride system just does not fit with the story they're trying to tell. If they wanted a ride inclusive and welcoming of everyone, they should have used a tamer ride system without height requirements that actually _would_ be welcoming of everyone.
My daughter loved it. It’s a ride and she knew the characters. I know many people are complaining but Disney is not an adult theme park. It’s for kids. I know Briar Rabbit but my kids don’t and to be honest splash mountain looked quite dusty over the years. It was old. I’m in my 40’s. That bear concert thing is old too and I think that was my mothers generation we just went because it had air conditioning. Disney is evolving for the new generation. Disney’s need to change that jungle book ride too. It needs a refresh.
It's one thing to refresh an older attraction for a new generation of audiences, it's another when an attraction purposefully built for a particular kind of story with careful attention to detail gets "refreshed" with a half-baked revamp that for some reason tries to do the opposite of everything it was originally designed to. I don't necessarily care that it was rethemed, but I do care that the new story really doesn't match the ride system they're trying to shoehorn it into. Splash Mountain committed to being a thrill ride, and that's why it worked so well; TBA for some reason want to pretend it's not, and that's why I feel it doesn't work anywhere near as well.
Walt did say “I do not make films primarily for children. I make them for the child in all of us, whether we be six or sixty.” and “Adults are only kids grown up.” He made it for adults to enjoy with their kids, and when the kids are grown up they can enjoy it again, hopefully with their own kids. If they were going to re-theme it, fine. But Walt also had a principle that if you replace something in the park, it needs to be even better. This is not.
This goes to show Tiana’s isn’t as bare boned as people made it seem. Both rides have plenty of dark parts. The main difference is that Tiana’s isn’t creepy and the scariness of Splash definitely helped build up the drop. But besides that I think they did a good job with Tiana’s. They probably wanted to leave the scary stuff for Villains Land.
My kids were devastated to hear that Splash Mountain was gone. Too bad Disney didn’t think to leave at least one alone. I’d love a Tiana ride but one put in Epcot or something. A whole new one all hers.
@@MagicMonkey96 the parks in Tokyo are not majority owned by the Disney company otherwise they would have changed it too. I don’t speak Japanese so that version of Zip a Dee do dah doesn’t ring the same for me 😆

Splash had way cuter critters and better music. Tiana isn't horrible but nowhere close to as good as Splash. By the way, why does Tiana still show sandstone walls?
Splash Mountain was clearly designed, engineered, and built with Splash Mountain in mind. Redecorating it to fit the Louisiana Bayou makes zero logical sense. It only works inside the mountain, which shouldn’t exist, until you go up a random hill. Sure. They try to make sense of it with the spirits or whatever, but it just looks cheap and breaks the immersion. It seems like a cheap redesign in a pitiful attempt to keep the park fresh, but it falls short because they planned and executed it poorly by forcing a them that doesn’t work for the design and layout. Disney can’t stop asking for L’s.

@@Jokervrgt However, the new theme really doesn't fix any of the issues Splash Mountain was accused of (PatF was also accused of insensitivity with the voodoo depictions, so it's rather hypocritical to claim one theme is insensitive while replacing it with another).
@@Jokervrgthave you seen the movie l?
Glad I was able to enjoy Splash Mountain one last time with my wife and kids before they changed it a few years back. Even though I’ve never seen the “Song of the South”, “Zippa De Do Dah” was always something that brought joy to me when I heard it and I’m glad my children got to hear it as well.
The new ride fails in one major way: story telling
Definitely. There is no emotional fluctuation in it anymore, doesn’t really tell a story.
What exactly was the original story of this ride? I have ridden this ride over a dozen times and I cannot tell you what the story is.
@MegKnightus Splash mountain didn't have a great story either bc it's hard to follow but I've you ride it enough or know the movie it's pretty simple
So Bear Rabbit is being chased by Breat Fox and Brear Bare who are incompetent and can't find him so Bear Rabbit goes to the 'laughing place ' (after the 2nd drop ) to basically go party but he gets stuck in honey and brear fox finds him (final drop ) brear Rabbit tricks brear fox by saying that if he throws him down the mountain into the brear patch he'll never escape but becuse hes little he can and then he celebrates at the end .
My biggest problem is tension:
Splash: this rabbit’s bouta be cooked and falls into the briar patch, Death crows heighten danger as you drop with him into certain death
Tiana: you big now! Party timeee 🎊! Have fun!!🌼🌻🌸
It’s just.. not fun anymore

I fell like most people aren’t talking about the way you feel watching these. When I was watching splash mountain it felt like just something whole heartedly made for kids to enjoy no matter how many people rode it, but tianas bayu feels like they were just trying to get people to go on the ride then want to go buy tiana merch.
Great with surface level visuals, but ultimately lacks any meaningful depth to make it impactful.
I disagree, I remeber going to splash mountain feeling terrified 💀 The new design- though lacking depth- feels way more comforting for children.
@@khayenq Except it was originally designed as a more thrilling ride to cater to teens and adults. Trying to make it pander to children too young to ride defeats the entire purpose.

so disappointing that Splash Mountain is gone. When i was finally able to bring my daughter (6) they had already shut down for construction. ill miss it, it was my favorite ride.
Same. Now they tailored it to their woke culture.
@@pinkpeonies3236what’s funny about that is, you’d probably think i was “woke.” infact, i can say with certainty that you would. but some of us still enjoy the nostalgia. the films, the tv shows, the stories. i understand that things were just made differently back then. hell, a lot of the things i said in high school in 2013-2017 are not deemed acceptable or PC today. things changed, but we must not erase it all or we will forgot where we came from. It felt forced putting Tiana’s Bayou there, when it could’ve gone anywhere else. It feels to me like they felt they could only do ONE thing with it in order to clear its name. before, we could ride Splash Mountain, and know that even though the film it’s based off isn’t PC, that is history. and damn it i just wanna sing zippity-doo-dah, dip under the briar patch and laugh.
And the winner is... SPLASH MOUNTAIN!!! 💦⛰🐰🦊🐻

Eh, disagree. The new one is cool! People just don't like change.
How did they not have Facilier and his friends singing “are you ready?” At the big drop

Interesting that at the top of the splashdown the water stream on Tiana's side is broken; the boat is going down a dry slide. It is not that deep

The fact as you enter the tunnel, Tiana has nothing, only to show off a Tv screen. Which seems to be a big thing now days, Tv screens
The very ending is a wash, I like the frogs with the city landscape, but prefer brear rabbit at the very very end lol
also Tiana wins by a landslide being prettier on the outside and amazing at night.

What I dont like in most of the recent Disney rides is the abuse of poorly executed screen images. There are some great exceptions tho.

Still love splash mountain
(Thankfully we brought a change of clothes, including under ware)
Overall it was cool, but I do have to admit I'd like Splash Mountain better.
They fixed that
I just rode it last week and got soaked. Much more than we ever have before when it was splash mountain. I was wondering if it had a raised water level. When you watch this video each time there is a “splash zone” the new version seems to have a much larger splash confirming my suspicion. Thanks for the video.
They did a nice job, but it lacks all of the “vibes” that Splash Mountain was loved for. 😢
It actually opened in 1989. And later at Disney World. I think that there are big areas of nothing at Disney World.
It is terrible.
Splash Mountain had charm, animatronics, & had parts of terror, that was necessary for a log flume
For Tiana's Bayou Adventure, half of the indoor section is just screens, the plot is more confusing, there is absolutely no terror, & it just feels like a cheap remake.

Not an upgrade
It’s just strange to me that they adapted this specific ride for Tiana’s story. The mountains and waterfalls of the bayou?
It's cool that your daughter likes the story & understands it but it was a classic. Renovate it, yes, retheme the whole ride to an IP? No
Splash was a cooler ride, glad I rode it before they made the change.
