  • Understanding the adoption lifecycle of innovation can be characterised using Everett Rogers’ Diffusions of Innovation theory. The theory categorises innovation adopters into five segments: innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority and laggards. Innovation must reach a certain critical mass point of adoption or it will likely fail. Gordon E. Moore referred to this point as the ‘Chasm’, which is often also known as the ‘S’ curve.

I think this is wonderful, but I wish it developed more the important role of communication (media + interpersonal) in the adoption cycle.

Thank you for the clear explanations and visuals. I can apply the pattern to a number of experiences in my life. My only concern is the use of an elderly disabled person as the laggard. There are laggards in all phases of life. Further stereo-typing the elderly is not a useful message. Young people viewing this video will probably just pass over this and agree with you that old people can just :Blah, blah, blah etc" and insist on sticking to what they have always done, but really that is most unfair to the great number of elderly who are fine thinkers and adapt well to modern life.
