Dude, I'm a long time subscriber. I rarely comment but it has to be said. You are one of the most technically proficient best guitar players on the planet.
I found you through Troy Grady's Channel and I can say you are a very impressive guitarist. You make it seem so effortless. My alternate picking has improved through Troy and I want to learn your sweeping methods. I cannot thank you enough for your work and contributions to the guitar community. I've only become faster and more accurate because of people like you. THANK YOU!!!
You are a hero for not burning out on playing. I stopped playing few years ago and focused on software programming, makes hell of a lot more money than music. It took me 4 years to become a senior level developer. I wasted almost 15 years of my life playing guitar, if i started out doing things which have something more to show for like programming i would be in the higher echelon of software development.
I don't have a routine but I do try and stay away from guitar music. Try to play keyboard, violin, clarinet, sax, viola... music on the guitar. Try and play Paganini up to tempo on the guitar shifted down an octave. Perpetual motion and Caprice 5 are the keys to great technique.
Marshall I am going to see Jason Becker next month... I will show him your video. You really make me laugh, and keep me entertained. You have some incredible ideas. Peace, Matt
You are such an incredible guitar player and I learned a lot from studying the "Holdsworthian Legato Guitar Lesson". My legato playing really improved in such a short space of time. Just wanted to say thanks!
Hey Marshall. Your playing, as always, is incredible. Been watching your videos for years. Great to see that you are still playing. You are a huge inspiration.
Total respect! Marshall, you're such a great player and teacher. Thanks for sharing what you've discovered. I can't help but see the very pure and natural mathematical relationships in these concepts. That only adds to the beauty in my opinion!
Great playing as always, Marshall. You are in my top 5 guitar players of all time. Congrats on the new baby! I love your math video too. Please post more of those too, when you get a chance.
Thanks so much Marshall, I really enjoy your videos, I've learned so much from the way you solve problems on the guitar so many different ways. Enjoy being a father!
Would love for you make a rock fusion lesson legato video and beyond , I'd buy it . your a wonderful player and your uploads are great informative love the Jason Becker guitar is that the carvin issued one or the performance ?
Very cool stuff Marshall, I am still working on basic swybrid but I appreciate these videos, because eventually I will run into something that you have already figured out a solution for which is pretty cool. One thing that happens with me is if I am burning an alternate picking thing my hand tenses up and it makes it harder to grab the one note you need with your finger and go back to the pick. There probably is a good excercise for that but I haven't figured out one so far.
Great lesson Marshall- A friend turned me on to Troy Grady, who shared a lesson, analyzing your playing. WOW- both of you guys are great. Thanks man! My sweep and tremolo picking…well..they suck. I can't get my hands to work together yet. hoping this will help. if not I still get to enjoy listening to your playing..
I've been watching your "holdsworthian legato" video for like years now and the comment section has always been disabled... I just want to say you are incredible, and I think Holdsworth should let you jam with him cause god damn.
Great ideas Marshall, thanks for sharing! I know that new baby thing is tough, hang in there. The new teenager thing will be tough as well in different ways LOL!
Hi Marshall! Love your playing, as usual. I hope this is appropriate place to pick you brain... I had a question about one of your older videos in which you are playing an 8-string Schecter. I have been interested in extended range guitars for a really long time, though always confronted with the barriers of (1) inability to afford (particularly during the "pre-Tosin Abasi" era with relatively no options not costing an arm and leg), and (2) lingering doubts about the scale length being a prohibitive factor in doing higher alternate tunings rather than using for djent/metal stuff. Thankfully, (1) is not so much an issue now, though I still am seeking clarification on (2) as I am shopping for either a seven or eight string guitar for jazz/fusion types of playing (I have no intention of using it for djent, metal, anything that ends in "-core", or in making bass players obsolete.) I was really excited to hear that you were using a B-E-A-D-G-B-E-A tuning, and I've also heard that a few other players (I believe Rusty Cooley) also use a similar tuning to broaden the range of the instrument in either direction, though I wanted to ask if tuning up to a high A presented any problems for you within either a 7-string or 8-string context, specifically in terms of tension, breaking strings, maintaining proper intonation? Also, what are your thoughts about the newest extended range guitars by Ibanez/Jackson/Schecter/Agile etc.?
Marshall, can you explain on a video how to play zig zag patterns ?? They sound great, but they do require speed. Derryl has a video, but he doesn't show the fingering chart.
Holy crap, this is some of the most effortless playing I've ever seen. Only Rick Graham is on par with this... I'm not sure if I want to sell my guitar and start knitting full time, or start practicing ten hours a day...
Dude, that is aweseome. I have two questions: I saw that they did a section on you in Cracking the Code by Troy Grady: 1.do you think about your pick slanting in the course of your playing or how you can use that to get the DiMeola afffect of desceding 4's? 2. I remmber years ago I saw a Holdsworth lesson where you talked about the tone for legato but I can't remember what you said exactly: did you rolll the bass way down and put the mids and hights up?
Think you could tell us the frets you're playing real quick in the videos or make tabs if that'd even be feasible? For the people that can't just pick it up as you play but still want to practice it.
DUDE! YOU ARE A MONSTER! I'm only playing 10 weeks and would love any advice you can offer. I want to be as great as you one day! Can you offer me any things that I can work on? How about what you practiced and how long as a beginner each day? Thanx
I guess tabs never happen on this channel, I guess if I was half that good I wouldn't be tabbing squat either lol. Matshal if you ever come out with a instructional video with tabs count me in
Hi Marshall. I've been looking for a ud stomp but can't find one anywhere, so I am just going to get the magicstomp in the mean time. What preset do you use with the magicstomp to get that smooth legato sound? I read you use preset 122 with the ud. Is there anything similar with the magicstomp? I have the behringer v-amp 3 as well. Thank you
Just a comment, I enjoy your help and your lessons. I would like to suggest that you use less distortion for these lessons. It makes it harder to here exactly what you're doing. I've seen so many lessons on youtube and I find that the best ones are fully balanced. Usually the guitar is too loud and the speech too quiet, or the reverse. Or the guitar is so distorted that you can't differentiate between notes. I would also suggest that you bring you guitar more up front, maybe mic it, along with you speech...a balance.

brilliant musical shred guitar master
what picks do you use? like in your picture?
Marshall - awesome guitar! It is easy to see what frets you are on for video purposes; would you recommend this guitar for playablity?
Great!!! Mr.Harrison!! What Kind of pick do you use?? Thanks

I've been watching your "holdsworthian legato" video for like years now and the comment section has always been disabled...

Great ideas Marshall, thanks for sharing! I know that new baby thing is tough, hang in there. The new teenager thing will be tough as well in different ways LOL!

Great like ever! Beautifull guitar is that!
Dude you are a monster!

I haven't been able to master the descending fours run for quite some time now.
Hey could you do a video on how to practice? Or at least how you've practiced and what you've found to be most effective?
Holy crap, this is some of the most effortless playing I've ever seen. Only Rick Graham is on par with this... I'm not sure if I want to sell my guitar and start knitting full time, or start practicing ten hours a day...
Your movement on the right hand is rotational?
Dude, that is aweseome. I have two questions: I saw that they did a section on you in Cracking the Code by Troy Grady: 1.do you think about your pick slanting in the course of your playing or how you can use that to get the DiMeola afffect of desceding 4's? 2. Killer Playing!
Mr Marshall, I am impressed by your playing! I was wondering what pick do you use?
Very good man!!!!
great lesson thank you hope to c more of you
Wow man incredible smooth playing! What string gauge do you use and what action ?
DUDE! YOU ARE A MONSTER! I'm only playing 10 weeks and would love any advice you can offer. I want to be as great as you one day! Can you offer me any things that I can work on? How about what you practiced and how long as a beginner each day? Thanx
Devin Townsend does that a lot!
I guess tabs never happen on this channel, I guess if I was half that good I wouldn't be tabbing squat either lol. Matshal if you ever come out with a instructional video with tabs count me in
Sounds like Frank Gambale sweep picking method to me. Either way it's working!
When you slow it down, you're playing the fast run from the 1812 overture, haha
The whole tone scale always reminds me of the beginning of the Simpsons theme.
that guitar is tough
Reminds me of Shawn Lane

You use the UD lead setting on the magic stomp right?
Descending fours are my damned kryptonite.
I refuse to hybrid pick it, therefore I suck at it 😂
God thats so cool

After having seen marshall struggle with the ascending version i would not even dare to try it...jeez
7:52 the Simpsons 😂
For you to say something is tricky and will take a while to get it up to speed...it must be near impossible for the rest of us.
