      1. He is using galvanized hardware with pressure treated wood could be very bad. He did not state why it is ok or why it could be bad.
      2. Ledgers are better sitting on the posts not bolted/lagged into the side.
      Ok not OMG.
      Edit:
      I still gave him a thumbs up for many other reasons.

    We built our home 22 years ago, today I started taking the original decking down, found a few bad joist, mold and a little rotten wood so its all coming down. Total rebuild at todays prices. I say all of that to say this, I worked construction for decades, broke my back and started over at 40 years old. In my opinion, this guy demonstrates great quality work, he’s simply showing people how “HE” builds a deck, not how “everyone” should build a deck. TOP quality work. Awesome job.

    Woohoo, I made the thumbs up total go from 5.2k to 5.3k... Thanks so much for posting these vids Shannon. I have watched a dozen of them already and always learn so much for many my reno projects. In this video, the only things I'd add, and will add to my deck project, is a product called blue skin.
    It's a type of vinyl sticky tar like tape that has great weather protection and works great behind the ledger board and tops of joists. The ledger board is crucial because if not protected properly can rot the base of your house. I'd prefer to double or even triple protect that area with blue skin and the drip edging.

    Only question is why not use Carriage Bolts on the posts. Excellent videos, I had my wife watch them as she questioned everything I did. She kept telling me I didn't need to do that, But after watching your videos she stopped asking why. Now our deck is completed, and inspected by the town, it passed with flying colors. She was very happy that I spent the extra to do it right. Keep up the videos, they are fantastic for novice builders who want to attempt DYI projects.

      Carriage bolts in wood have a chance of spinning when you are tightening and no good way of holding them to prevent that once they are sunk into the wood a bit.

    This is a great series of videos, and you're not only doing a great job on this deck, but also at being the kind of instructor even experienced carpenters like myself can learn things from.
    That said, I have seen tons of guys do decks just like this. By that, I mean starting at the house and building the frame out a predetermined distance. Then, cutting the framing off and decking the platform from the outside edge toward the house, sometimes having to do battle with that last board fighting to get it in. Most times, it requires ripping long sections.
    Now, I could certainly understand doing it this way if we were working with extremely tight tolerances, but rarely are we under such constraints in the backyard. Two inches here or there on the total deck size is rarely going to be an issue. Therefore, why not hold off on cutting off the framing and start your decking with full boards at the house and work your way out? Then, as you get to where your last board is going to screw on and cover your outside rim board, then cut off your framing and finish it off without having to rip a single board? Again, your complete deck is maybe 2 or 3 inches longer, but what customer ever complained about a bigger deck?

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  7 месяцев назад +1

      All depends on code and permits. If you have the design at the limits of cantilever or size already inspectors may catch you on an extra couple inches. That being said you could cut it smaller to the last full board I suppose .

    Great videos you're doing, keep it coming!
    Knowing this is an older video I still have to comment on which way to place the boards; 36:45. Being the maintenance manager at an Ontario resort I oversee the renovations and new builds, most of our contractors will place the deck boards with the heartwood down (bark side up) to prevent the sun and weather from curling the centre part (heartwood) from curling up. Our 150' x 14' main dock had the boards put down with the best side up, unfortunately many were put bark-side down resulting in some nasty curled-up pieces of core wood. The first 3 years we went and inspected the dock monthly for up-curls, carving them off flush with chisels. We had a few guests with nasty cuts and stubbed toes from that damned heartwood curling.
    Your final boards being placed, you've placed a joint directly in front of the secondary French door, 42:58, we've found that any joints like that tend to fail sooner, a combination of the board end and the joist starting to crush with the weight of people stepping onto the board ends when coming in or out the door. This is assuming that right hand door is operable and not fixed (I see it is operable at 44:40), even so the joint is still a bit close to the primary.

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  3 года назад

      I understand your point about the very centre heartwood and yes these days with the new growth forests supplying much of our lumber and the trees being much smaller diameter it does make more sense maybe now to place these with bark side up , My old school tradition sometimes trips me up! LOL.
      Interesting point about the joint near the door, I have never considered that but maybe I will now. Local conditions can make a difference for sure with that kind of thing also. As well I now use joist tapes to prevent the premature rotting or softness that joist can develop over time due to moisture trapped between the boards and joist.
      Thanks for your comments.

    Great video I like watching real people doing real jobs when I say that I mean there not afraid to admit they have made a mistake here and there and it teaches the viewer how to correct it and not worried about getting it on video thanks for the great video.

    Wow! What a great video! Long, but very complete and gives the viewer time to absorb the lessons and really see what you are doing.

    I put one post on every corner when doing outside posts. You just cut an inch and three quarter V in the corner of the post and then cut a 4 x 4 in half corner to corner making a V you put that V inside the corner of the deck and you drill thru the post and the deck face and the V and you bolt thru all three and that post is perfect for both intersecting rails.

    You dont build a deck without notching the posts 👌 only way to make it structurally sound 👍

    As always, excellent job! Very informative with great detail. I especially appreciated the comments about not spacing the decking when using wet treated lumber.

    a bit late but one correction is to check your manufacture of PT lumber as most metal-based PT lumber like Mirco Siena PT you actually want to do a light sanding and treat with stain or waterproofing once the wood is dry to the touch. to tell wait 1-2 weeks then drop some water droplets on the deck if they are absorbed its ready for stain/Waterproofing if not wait another week or two. Depending on location, humidity, the weather, and how wet the wood once when you purchased will determine how long it will take to dry. Also, another quick tip always buy the brown coated deck screws, not the green ones. they use to be different but now are the same at Box stores. Grab brown it will look funny for the first season if you got that green PT lumber. but it's better to look funny for one season rather than 30 years of green screws once the deck starts to lose its green color. the brown screws blend with brown PT lumber like micro and once the color starts to fade they still match.

    Seven years ago you did this video lol. I don’t even know if you read comments from seven years ago. But anyways, I’m about to begin fastening the deck boards.
    To prevent cupping, do I fasten the boards with the smile up or with the smile down? And what are the best fasteners screws or nails. I heard when you fasten the deck with smile up, The boards will eventually curl and create a crown for the water to run off. I don’t know what do you think. Great videos, you’re a man of many talents! Thank you.

      36:40 MARk of the video. You want the boards "smiling" at you.

    watched your videos as I am doing a simple 6x6 deck off my front door and I learned a lot, however since it was lower to the ground did not have to do a railing, only 24" high our code is 36" high for railings

    Super overall video. By viewing previous video one of two things are certain you forget to slope out your deck or your posts are hanging out.
