I felt like I had a good understanding of building a deck but I found this series while looking for tips since its been a couple decades since my last deck build. Ive got to say this series about deck building is the most informative and detailed video series out there for building a deck start to finish. All the small tips and things to consider along the build really helped my project. Even though I think I know how to build a deck, I feel like I learned a lot and want to say thank you for such a great job in this series.

This is honestly the best and most straight forward video on making stair stringers I've ever seen. Building my own steps always scared me on projects and I usually just bought the pre-cut ones from the box stores when available, but recently had a project that required taller steps and different sized than the pre-made ones. I literally just drew up and cut my first 6 stringers in probably 1 hr or less, saved a ton of money on doing it myself (precuts are insanely expensive..) and was so easy I would never think of doing it another way again. You've literally taught me a lifelong skill in less than a hour, and I thank you a million times over for sharing your knowledge with all of us.

What I like about your videos is the fact you show how you work around issues that come up. I know that every project has some snafus, but you are the only one who shows what can go wrong and how your work around them. That’s as valuable for me as the video itself. It keeps me thinking not only about the next step but also some of the pitfalls. Thanks for “Keeping It Real”

Since this was eight years ago I don't know if you will see this, but I have watched hundreds of these videos and you are the first person I have seen that knows what you're doing! Very nice job down to the smallest detail. I see people through bolt a beam on the side of a post almost a hundred percent of the time. They never say what the fasteners are made of and I picture 30 drunk people 8 feet in the air crashing to their deck when the bolts fail or act as a splitting wedge!

Great instructional series of videos Shannon. I watched all 6 twice and a few years ago I built my entry deck using the same balusters. They're easy to work with and look great when completed. Just recently, I redid my backyard deck with the same balusters, and it looks great. I got lots of compliments from my neighbors and it brought my deck up to date and here in Washington, they're holding up to the weather just fine. I actually was able to build my steps as well. Thanks for your help.

Just a great presentation. One thing that stands out is the honesty you bring to your projects. Like anyone and everyone who works with their hands, occasionally you will find yourself occasionally having to backtrack if only slightly because of a minor oversight. It’s critical your viewers see and understand this as a part of it all and not to get discouraged. Aside from all that your explanations are done in a relaxed and easy to follow manner. In short…tip top! 👍👌

In the future if you wish to hide the cross bolts in the mounting box try laying out your stairs first, then remove them and install the mounting box first, then install the actual post then reinstall the stairs. Makes it easier to pull the tabs out, access them and install the cross bolts that squeeze the post. For aesthetics, hiding the bolts is always the best way to go. I learned this trick years ago from an senior member of my construction union. A note to Do it Yourselfers, wood that becomes rotted is prone to being destroyed further by carpenter ants so make sure your wood is pressure treated and make sure you remember to apply a preservative to all cuts. Great work Shannon and a good video. George Lunney / Laborers Union Local 731 New York City

Coming from metal work I struggle sometimes with knowing what my tolerances are and no one else on you tube seems to talk about it.

Good solid information presented quickly and clearly. The only thing I'd highly recommend if you are going to be trying for code approval, is you really need to address the requirements for openings like the ones formed between the risers. In our area, that space can not be big enough to put a 4" sphere through it. Apparently, the four inch sphere is a stand in for a young child's head. Another way to deal with that space problem is to figure in a kick plate for every riser to block it off.

Thanks for posting this series. The explanations and some of the tricks of the trade were extremely useful. I have a deck that was poorly built by the previous owner and is becoming a hazard. It was built using untreated framing lumber and there is no flashing at the wall where it attaches to the house, causing the siding to rot. I fear some of the wall framing may be rotten as a result.😟

You're a very good teacher, and the picture and angles are really good, i like the imperfections u include in the videos too, it shows that u are human just like your viewers, this step building video helped me understand what goes into it, u and your crew thanks.

Great job, as usual, I'm getting ready to put steps on my deck, I have to put a concrete landing first in a back yard with downward pitch, I love in the hills of Tenn.
