Matt & Jen, Am really enjoying your adventure through my native MN. Your videos will be a lasting travelogue of your journey. Am looking forward to your upcoming adventures in "Baa-midge-ee" and beyond. Hopefully the ticks and mosquitos will back off as you get out of the deep north woods. The humor will get you through. Paul
Headwaters bugs were a bit rough but we’ve still been enjoying the trip. Certainly not as gentle as something like the Suwannee or Green River but hard to beat for the ability to travel distance on flatwater water
@WolfeAdventures the chemical that keeps bugs away is called d-trans-Allethrin and "prolonged consistent exposure may damage kidney or liver" but I think you almost would have to be directly inhaling it. Deet is just as bad in my opinion and your rubbing that directly on your skin. I mostly use permethrin treated clothes and picaridin lotion. But if bugs are bad at camp and it's early in the day, I'll use the thermacell
I’ve had students try and use themacell on my Sierra Club trips before. Honestly the warnings about the chemicals involved are a bit too concerning for us. Similar to Deet it seems like a potential for worrying long term complications for relief of short term discomfort. Hence why we usually lean pretty heavy on the barrier method. I won’t say I’m not tempted here though
I have no interest in actually doing this but I learned about you in an AT group - really enjoying watching you two make this journey, though! Thanks for sharing!
Indeed, a much better day: fewer ticks, more talkative Taters, more beavers, and a nice camp at the end of the day. Despite the rain (not "absolutely miserable" he says) not a bad day! It takes a true optimist, though, to view the idea of "bigger ticks" as a good thing. :) Paddle On! Tortoise
These videos are not only entertaining but also extremely useful for those planning to do this trip. Your SDTCT was instrumental in helping me do the first half last year. Thank you both!
Only one tick and you're complaining? Try 7! This kind a reminds me of "The African Queen". That shelter is scary. It leans a dangerous amount. Another nice video. Happy Paddling. Good Luck, Rick
You’re paddling into a bit of a drought in WI, IA, IL and MO, so hopefully that means less bugs as you get away from the parts of MN that had record snow… and if so, this might be back on my bucket list. Thanks for sharing!
Love watching your videos. I'm up in MN and recommend a good stop. When you get to the Highway 6 crossing near Crosby, the Bridge Tavern has amazing food!!
At this point we’re on the river so have to get things as we go. We’re figuring we have far more access to towns and civilization if something more extreme like that happens compared with the usual hikes
Love watching your videos. We live right by Lock and Dam 15 in the Rock Island, IL /Davenport, IA area. Do you have any idea when you should be passing through this area. We would love to watch you paddling by. 😎👍
We don’t really at this point. Aiming for roughly 30 miles a day once we hit our stride but obviously things tend to happen along the way. Instagram is usually showing where we are on a particular day and if you message us once we’re closer I can try and give you a better guess
Thank you for sharing this part of the journey… it’s beautiful but definitely a tick/mosquito nightmare. You’re a lot more “entertaining” when you’re around others compared to the chill guy who just came off trail.
Basically your choices in MN are mosquitoes, ticks, and leeches OR -35F free space. So you learn to play hockey, ice fish, and yes, even curl. And hibernate in the summer. Gooo Brrrmidji.
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes Yeah, I noticed the dispersed camping style as I kept watching the videos. Looks like a great time! I would love to try this sometime, which is what led me to finding your adventure here! Thanks for the reply!
We have 2x 2.5 gallon jugs plus our drinking containers. I brought a filter as a backup but we haven’t used it so far. My expectation is we can keep filling at campgrounds and parks the entire way like the Suwanne
Curious- is the canoe actually patched or does it have the “fiberglass skid plates” that most canoes have on them in the bwcaw? I know I put the skid plates on after my 1st trip, saves the bow & stern of the canoe. Loving the trip so far !!!! Thank you
I know you're probably past Bemidji now, but i hope you got to see the statues of Paul & Babe. They're kind of a landmark. Or at least in my mind they are.
I havent heard many people mention this. Snowpeak propane mix lantern. Snowpeak easy light lantern. BOY does it kill moquitoes. It I know there will be alot of those critters to me its weight worth carrying.
5:06 If it makes you feel any better that Rat Cat Crew couple is making about a quarter of the money from those videos that they could earn if they both just got job's flipping burgers and working the drive thru at McD's. They aren't going to get rich and famous with those thumbnails.
Why did you take a 'Jar' of Pasta sauce? look at all that weight, why did you not just put the sauce in a Ziplock bag? and recycle the Jar? now you have to carry the empty Jar.

Absolutely love this series! I love the thought of actually taking luxury items and not have to worry as much about weight. Paddle on!
thanks. I've been thinking about doing this trip for about 10 years. I think you've brought me to my senses.

Thermacell for mosquitoes works amazing!
Is it safe long term?

Paddler’s worst fear, “ skeeter on the Peter!” 😂

All the paddle camps and docks have been a little run down. I always check any structure I get near and it seemed solid enough
So interesting! Thanks for the humor and great info. Science teacher here, and love Tater’s nature tidbits. The ticks would drive me insane.
It’s really bad at first but after the initial horror you learn how to live with them. It is exhausting having to be constantly on guard though

The thing about that lantern no matter how far away you are from the lantern they ignore you and go right for it.

The beaver shot was cool. Have you thought about getting some Cipro from your doctors just in case you get a tick bite?

“I’m getting better”😅😅😅😅😅
Misery loves company and gives the advantage of your partner being able to check the places you can't check on your own. 😎👍✌
You should def do the thumbnail with Jen wearing a 1/2 inch thick layer of repellent and her head net lol.
Get two thermacells. One by the tent and one for wherever your eating or working.
Wow, those ticks! Did you manage to avoid getting Lyme's or any other tick-borne illness?
Yep. Fortunately they were the bigger type that’s easier to find before they dig in

Bow is just important as stern for steering these creeks
Well it's getting better, only imported ticks !
Where do you get info on camp sites along the Mississippi? I would love to do this some day! At least on a small scale!
Up in the headwaters there are DNR maps that show the actual paddle campsites. Below that it’s basically just dispersed camping on sandbars and such
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes Yeah, I noticed the dispersed camping style as I kept watching the videos. Looks like a great time! I would love to try this sometime, which is what led me to finding your adventure here! Thanks for the reply!
Yay for less ticks. Are you getting your water from the river, and if so is there some point downriver which you will stop?

Not at the campsites themselves but parks and such along the way

We were told this is a used canoe with repairs

Kind of like the old bug zappers?
Lyme disease?
Ah yes... The Masochist X Rated Channel... And a one coffee day is better that a no coffee day
dd check her for ticks or she will hate you

Thanks, Taters you are paddling by yourself, but if you had some help your skill level would go way up. Hehe. ✌🏻👊🏼

We do that when thru hiking but in the canoe having something like a glass jar until the next trash can wasn’t that big a deal
study money w me
