Woodturning - The Old Piano Tuner

- I recently acquired an old piano, I stripped it back to usable wood I could recycle. This weeks project I make a lamp recycling what was some of the tuner from inside the piano, and yes it took me some time to unscrew all the tuning pins from the pin block.

When you start watching a video with "What in the absolute heck is he doing?" Normally means something good is happening.
Not in this case obviously. Just a useless junk.
@@alexybogomolov so, you're an expert woodturner then, producing high quality items that took absolute weeks to prep and lots of hours to turn? Because that's what we saw, weeks worth of prep work, hours of turning and finishing so....
It was fantastic.
@@alexybogomolov :: I’d rethink that judgement.
Beautiful, who would of thought of turning an old piano tuner in to an amazing looking lamp. Brilliant 😊
I was a little disappointed that you used that stone looking product to cover the wood…UNTIL you added the gorgeous blue tiles. That is a beautiful lamp! The shade is perfect for it too. I’m guessing people would get a big surprise, if they picked up the lamp thinking it was ceramic or stone, and learned it is wood.😮😀😁 Excellent work Matt!👍🏼👍🏼
I thought that was a pretty good faux stone look!
I was hoping that the piano tuner would be noticeable in the final project. It's a nice lamp though.
Fantastic use of old piano wood. That's lovely. ❤❤❤❤😊😊
Nice! Yet another amazing job from the Woodturning Wizard!
In a thousand years time on antique road show, "arrrr here we have a Jordan"
Nice work buddy🤙🏼
Never thought I would see the day an old piano tuner would turn into a lamp, but I'm glad I did. That speckled effect with the spray paint is excellent.
A man with all kinds of instruments, but without a small fixed size wrench.
Wow. You are a wood Master! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Very nice, Matt! Growing up, my Ma had a lamp much like this, different in shape and color, and still does to this day! Cool to see history repeating itself! 💙
Wow 😮 love this 👌🏻 soo clever 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Maaaaaaaannnnnnnnn, THIS IS ONE OF THE COOLEST CREATIONS EVER! WOW! I would NEVER guess this is wood. Amazing! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
What an amazing lamp!
Another brilliant piece Matt. 🙂👌
A fancy wrecking ball lamp. Cool
That is a beautiful lamp!
Whenever I see that notification that Matt Jordan uploaded it makes my day Keep up the great work man
You've never know what it was unless somebody told you that turned out real nice. Good piece of wood. Not going to waste. 👍👍🙂🇨🇦
Perfect
Really cool pattern.👌👍
I may not like the final product, but i respect the work put into it. GJ
Well that was clever!! 👋👍❤
Now not even pianos are safe from you 😱🤣Nicely done 👍👍👍. Thank you for sharing. Be safe🇨🇦
🤣
Gorgeous! Love the recycling, too.
Мэт, ваша безграничная фантазия меня очередной раз удивила, до последнего момента я не понимал что же это. Супер 👍👍👍👍, красиво и элегантно.
gorgeous!!!
How cool!!! I knew something with artistic intent was happening, but I didn’t guess a lamp! It turned out just beautiful!!!
Amazing. Several years ago i thought about using the Ivory overlays and Ebony keys from vintage pianos for inlays on handles of fixed blade and folding knives but never considered using other parts of a piano for wood working.
Thank you Matt! 🙂 I'm with MK, what the Heck is he up to now?! 😄 If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it.
Fabulous ingenuity and artistry! 👏👏👏
Blessings! 💜
Neat, a piano "pin block"! It's really sad that you pretty much can't give away a piano these days, literal tons of them on every local for-sale site.
Nice job repurposing the wood!
Excellent! 👍
Thanks for the visit
Beautiful lampshade, specially the color scheme you have used.
Very cool!
That looks awesome
Simple yet awesome 👌
Hi Matt when I first started watching this I thought what the heck is he up to but has we know you are very talented and you always amaze me with what you turn. This lamp from an old piano tuner is magnificent and really unique. Thank you for a marvellous video it was interesting watching you turn the lamp and the speckle spray paint it. Amanda xx
A very beautiful lamp base Matt.
That is gorgeous,and clever 😊
Wasnt expecting that!
SPLENDID MAESTRO
Not what I was suspecting but I like it! It's a cute solid quality lil lamp
Oh I love that! I wasn't sure what you were doing at first, LOL, but that turned out awesome! ❤❤❤
There's a true limited edition piece! Looking forward to more piano projects :)
Looks good.
Love it
👍💯,Nice job! Thank you
ARTISTA 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👌👍
Taking out all those pegs must have been really fun.
A piano has 220 on average. Easy to remove if you have the correct tools, he didn't....
Creatife👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks 👍
HOOO BOA TARDE PARABÉNS MEU AMIGO TO AQUI ASSISTINDO COM JAPÃO GOIANOOOOO
I would have had to use my finger for that grout. Thanks for the video
В моем пианино рама на которой крепились струны была из чугуна 😂
Сперва подумал - как же это дело на станке обработать)
@MattJordanWoodturning you really should consider covering electrical outlets when spraying stuff
Finally,,the logic of a PowerPlane to reduce the angles prior to turning on the lathe,,,js
Trabalho lindo parabéns
Hermosa creación, muy buena!!!(👏👏👏💖💖💖🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
There is a bit that easily attaches to any drill that will do the work of removing tuning pins very simply and easily
This is a bit off topic, but if I ever had the honor to meet you I would be afraid to shake your hand. Your grip must be like a vise! Oh, and beautiful job as always. 😊
Great job. What about turning the holes outward and filling the holes with epoxy? Another lamp
Question do you just grab pieces of wood and just make something up while making it or do you spend like a day or something planning
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Really nice, Matt. That accent ring was a great idea. When you first made the groove, I was wondering how you were going to get the pewter into it. I guessed wrong. It also looks like you have plenty of wood for additional projects.
Bill
Amazing work, Matt! It turned out fantastic! 😃
But I wonder if you made a speaker with that wood, how would it sound!
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Interesting idea BUT a word of warning, old pianos are glued together with animal glue (melted down horses if you Really wanna know). When it gets too hot, it melts, goes all slimey and the bits of wood slip away from each other. When it gets too cold, the glue cracks and the bits of wood fall apart from each other. That's why underfloor heating in the home (or kept in a kitchen) or being stored in a garage or shed (or kept in a cold/hot conservitory) will all kill a piano.

What an interesting source material! I'll bet that one's not blowing over in a wind storm! Was the "grout" made from acrylic caulk?
👍
Really nicely done! Curious about that colored texture product?
My question is - how did you get the little square tiles to come out evenly around the circumference of the piece?? Very nice turning!
Rough guess!
I thought piano wood was very hard wood. No problem here it appears!
The pin blocks in old pianos are solid beech, modern pianos use laminated beech. The rest of the core wood is usually cheap pine. The outer case is usually venered. Only very very Very old pianos have solid wood cases.
Hmm sorry but a lamp base in the natural wood with some nice polishing to bring out the unusual textures and joins in the wood would have been way nicer.....
That’s a really fat lamp but very cool nonetheless. I wonder how he got the paint or speckle though?
What did you use as a base for the grout that you made?
Y not put the drill chuck on string pegs thats what i did ?looks like yours is spruce mine was ash and fkn rock hard 😂😂😂😂
Dunnerlüttchen! Fabelhaft!
ok I get that the Lamp looks' great but why go through all that work just for a lamp when you cant even tell it was made from an old piano?
Please, be careful of your fingers when sawing. Take it as good advice from someone who sawed off his left thumb in a similar saw to yours. They managed to save my thumb but it will never be what it was.
I´m not sure if it is worth to ruin a piano for making a very common lamp...

How much traditional carpentry did you learn during your apprenticeship? My cousin's son just finished his carpentry apprenticeship, and I'm curious as to what similar skills you would have.
Does all that work to cut down a beautiful piece of wood, then makes it look like stone. 🤦🏼♂️
What’s the point of using an old piano if you were just going to paint it? Now you can’t see any of the cool patterns. Might as well of just used old 2x4s or something. 🤦
Очень красиво!
