  • This is the easiest and quickest way to make your own homemade refried beans. I am using home canned pinto beans, but if you do not can, you can certainly buy canned pinto beans from your store OR buy dried beans and soak them over night and cook them down yourself! So much better than the pre-made refried beans you buy in a can! Let me know down below if you give it a try and how YOU ended up making your own. :D

Pintos were one of the first things I ever canned just 5 short months ago. My 30 yr old son said "I won't eat anything from a jar" I made this recipe with add onion on a night he and his family were coming over for dinner. He tasted he said "Oh mom those are so good what brand are they?" I said "Mom's brand out of a jar!" Every time we have gotten together and tacos or burritos are on the menu he will ask if I am making re-fried beans! So Thank you Kneady for this recipe and helping me turn my son on to food out of a jar is the best!

This is authentic from-scratch cooking. I love the way everyone chimes in with how they add this or that to their beans. It's a true community discussion. Thanks, Heather, for bringing us all together. Love and hugs to you and your family. Stay strong.

I found a cool trick when making my refried beans, once the beans were heated I throw them in the kitchen aid mixer with the paddle attachment and use that to mash them, back into the pan to simmer...Quick and easy :)

I love homemade refried beans. Usually make nachos or burritos with them. I make mine a little different. Sauted onions, garlic, and jalapeño peppers. Spices I use are cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Then I blend it smooth in the blender.

Thank you, I must tell you I am a grandmother and you my dear are an exceptional teacher. I am new to canning and you are the best teacher so I thank you for that. I am trying to learn new things to teach my granddaughter. I have always cooked from scratch but canning always scared me. My mother blew up a pressure canner when I was a kid so I had no interest in canning until now. Always scared the crap out of me. I look forward to learning so much from you to pass down to my granddaughter. Happy New Year.

I cook pinto beans at least once a week for dinner, but I love making them with bacon 😋. I always freeze left overs and make my refined beans and add jack cheese while its cooking. Also if it starts getting thick add 1/2&1/2 or milk to thin it out. Grew up with and have a lot of Hispanics in my family who've taught me so much about cooking Mexican food. 😊

I googled refried beans on RUclips and found this recipe. Of course I should have gone here first as I have been a subscriber of yours for a couple of years. I heard your comment about how you almost always cook with cast iron... and I was like... oh no! Because of your accident and the injuries to your hands, I can see you will have to change how you cook.... another hurdle for you to overcome. But I know you will conquer that..in time... I am continuing to pray for you Heather and your family. Keep on! We are all rooting for you!

Thank you for this. I have eaten re-fried beans before and I am not fond of them. So now that I have completed my second round of pressure canning with PINTOS (hint hint) I think I will pop a jar in the next month or so and give this recipe a try. Yes, I pressure canned again this weekend and my Pintos look just as good as those great northern beans I did the week before. I am so happy with the success. Thanks a bunch Kneady.

I was thrilled to see that you made a video about making refried beans from home canned beans. I started canning beans for the first time this summer. Beans are one of my favorite foods. Store bought beans are expensive and with a larger family you can spend several dollars on enough for one meal. Keep up the good work.

I just made a few pounds of pinto beans yesterday. I make mine in the crockpot with jalapeños, onions, and garlic then mashed with a stick blender. I freeze since I have not started canning yet. I mix in salsa and cream cheese or cheddar when I reheat. Not traditional by any means, but it is delicious. Have you tried refried black beans before? They are really good too.

Hey Heather 😊 oh WOW these beans looks sooo 😋 yummy!! You're right, the can bought ones do taste metallic, plus they are that stodgy & thick that you could turn the can upside down & they wouldn't move!! Many moons ago we used to go to a Mexican restaurant & my fave thing on the menu was a Bean Dip, it was soo good, they served it with a layer of spicy tomato salsa on top & guacamole, sour cream & corn chips on the side. You could so do this with your refried beans!! Well done clever mama!! 🤗👏

Yet another thing to learn to pressure can! Uggh we're renting a house right now with a ceramic top, I'm not going to pressure can until we get into our 1st house (hopefully in 6 - 8 weeks!) and use the coil stove I asked for. +katharine macleod I tried a beef stew but found that the potatoes and carrots cooked to mush because you have to pressure can based on the meat processing time. I also tried just potato and carrots in the same jar and the carrots were over processed as they normally process 5 minutes less than potatoes, so now I can all three separately and just mix the three jars to make a quick stew.

I used Walmart brand pinto beans & I’m lucky if 2/3 of bag is useable. Most are cracked in half or very wrinkled & it takes “forever” to sort them. I know you suggest not using them in that condition for canning as well. I’ve tried both navy & black beans Walmart brand beans as well with same loss factor. My guess lol is no to use that brand any longer. Any favorite brands???

+Carlyn Prato For anyone wanting to can and starting out with nothing, put a want ad up at the local seniors centers and the local buy and sell . A long time canner is only too happy to have her stuff go to someone who would value her jars, books or canners. Just let it out there, tell anyone you know that you are looking. Never put a canning jar in the microwave and pressure canners are safe, Once they are locked and you are keeping an eye on the temperature there are no issues because you do not open them until they cool down, just make sure that you put enough water in the canner to start if they run out of water you ruin your canner. Good luck .

+Kerry Scott You can boil beans and freeze them in one cup portions. This is roughly equivalent to one can of beans from the grocery store, and no metal taste. I usually keep black beans, pinto beans, and red beans in the freezer like this. Just be sure to label with the date and contents. You will need to add some liquid to make those yummy refried beans like she shows.

Have you ever canned refried beans?

That opener dents the lids. I open lids like that with my fingers (terrified of slicing my skin off) or the blunt side of a knife under the lid.
Do you reuse lids? I think glass lids are better for reusing because you just need rubber rings. Much easier to pop open too with a butter knife.
Mmm garlic. I used to eat garlic toast for breakfast when I was in elementary school.
Eww canned (as in metal) meat is something I can't eat anymore. Except for maybe tuna. But that flavor and the meat always looks questionable.
I only watch you, GregsKitchen and SimpleCookingChannel. I think that's enough because these videos make me hungry.
Someone asked me about canning and I said get an All American pressure canner. Then they saw the price lol. Well you don't want to go cheap and have an explosion.
