So, in Smash, there’s a mechanic called Directional Influence (DI, for short). If you’re in a combo, holding certain directions with the control stick can enable you to escape, and on the opposite end, you can continue a combo if you read your opponent’s DI. Early percentage combos with Kazuya require at least one DI read in order to get the 0-death, but the hitstun is too much beyond mid percents to be able to reliably escape.
As for Kazuya’s strength, he’s a high effort, high reward character. He does get walled pretty hard by anyone with decent range or disjoints, though, which keeps him decently balanced, imo
So just Aerial Control from Soul Calibur?
@@EllaEllaAudios I'm not familiar with Soul Calibur, but maybe
@@EllaEllaAudios it’s exactly like soul calibur
playing against samus, young link, ness and other zoners make his weaknesses really visible
Yeah it's similar to "air control" in Soul Calibur 2. Kinda, it's before the hit though, where you can sorta influence the angle you get launched by. Usually the most optimal angle for most forward launching attacks is diagonal since & for upward launching attacks it's horizontal. Anything that scrapes off launch distance will help you survive for longer.
The Smash community tends to hate characters that do very well/change the pace of the game too much.
Right now Kazuya gets the same treatment that Akuma does in Tekken with fans actively hating the character and sometimes the player.
I'd say the hate is for Steve rn
As someone who plays Kazuya in smash I agree 100%, we get zero respect despite the amount of work we put in and the amount of weak matchups we have to deal with

Yea 1 combo into death deserved hate tho both akuma in tekken and kazuya in smah

Death combo lol
11:58 he became MASKU
6:21 The movement was absolutely amazing, I don't play this shit but I can't ignore how sick that was.
They actually spammed their defensive options (spot dodge) and their moves clanked because they hit each other with the same move on the same frame. It was a bit silly situation.
0:28 One shouldn't be so surprised, the Smash devs have always knocked it out of the park in terms of faithfulness to the characters they include in the game. However overall it's also very nice to see TMM finally comment on Smash with an open mind, the way he changed his mind about the game is definitely a big sign of maturity on his part.
Kazuya is the Akuma of Smash Bros, in my opinion. He is High execution with high damage if you play him right.
guest character from another genre, breaking mechanics and rules, community up in arms about nerfs and banning, sounds about right
@@AIRFGC Harada trolling always makes me laugh lmao
The difference is that Akuma is top tier, while Kazuya is not.

(TLDR at the end) There is a little bit of misinformation in chat about the combos. The opponent usually has no frames to act during the combos, but in smash there is a thing called DI (directional input) that allows you to influence what direction you get sent when hit my a move. The direction your opponent is DI-ing is always displayed as a faint blue line when the moves hit and there is that brief stun (when both characters are frozen in their animations; some moves cause a lot of stun and some cause very little). This is important for some moves that kill off the top but can send slightly left or slightly right depending on which side of the move hits the opponent, and if you di it wrong you can die at a much lower percent compared to if you di it correctly. Due to the huge amount of stun caused by electric moves (ewgf being an obvious example), the blue di line is visible for enough time for the kazuya player to see it and react to which direction the opponent is trying to get sent. The best strategy for the opponent imo is to just wiggle the stick around randomly so it's just a complete guess on the Kazuya players part to continue into a big combo, but there are a few option selects the Kaz player can do for slightly smaller rewards, but as seen in this set, beneath the middle of a platform the option select can lead to huge damage and guarantee kills at earlier percents.
TLDR; while kazuyas combos off electric are technically true in that the opponent can't press or dodge to get out of them, but they can try move left of right midair to keep the Kazuya player guessing if they want to extend the combo. Sometimes the Kazuya player can cover left, right and centre at once with some tech like weird wavus into devil twister and directional airdodging down onto a platform and then doing demon god fist.
So are you saying since theres no frames to react, the increased hit stun at higher damage percentage just gives the aggressor more time to read the opponent?
Or is there actually some element of frames that get increased with hit stun? Or do you have less influence over your direction at higher hit points or somethin like that?
@@Sanjolow For your first paragraph, that would only really be applicable to Kazuya, but hit stun on electric moves does not increase with higher percentages as far as I know.
You do get more frame advantage the higher the percent. Smash also has its own rage mechanic that I'm pretty certain increases the damage of your moves as you get higher and higher percent (caps at 150%). The higher damage gives them higher hit stun so you get bigger combos. It's either that or you just get higher hit stun, can't remember which. Either way, player rage gives better combos.
The higher the opponents health gets, the further they get sent when hit. This makes a lot of combos percent specific, and since bigger characters are heavier and smaller characters are lighter, the percents where combos work vary from character to character, but general ball parks for weight are fine even though all characters have different weights, which dictates how far they get sent.
This is just a bit more info, but some characters fall faster than other, some float noticeably more than others. This is another factor that changes how you combo.
For some characters, weight and fall speed change their combos trees a lot (I think sheik and captain falcon have this), while the combos of others like Ken and Kazuya don't get affected by much besides the stage and rage. Worth pointing out that Kazuyas rage mechanic is very strong because he also gets the 10% damage increase from tekken, and his rage drive, and increased hit stun so its possible he gets access to a few new combos into electric.
@@smugaladdin8372 rage in smash affects knockback only. It's a 10% boost when you're at 150, and it scales up from I think 70?
@@Nowel22222 it caps at 150% for sure, I was pretty certain it affected damage, although I wouldn't be at all surprised if I was wrong about that
@@smugaladdin8372 no its just knockback I'm sure of it
Loving the smash content from the perspective of a Tekken player. It's a nice change of pace as a melee player who has been picking up Tekken recently.
cool to see TMM taking smash more seriously, trying to understand it and enjoying watching it. his older videos kinda felt like he was shitting on it haha
Because he WAS shitting on it hahaha
He was shitting on it and I told people about it since TMM was judging Smash playing on random party casual stages instead of the real deal and I got shitted for it. Glad to see that people can now see my point that it's easier for a Smash player to get into Tekken than the other way around, Smash is very clunky for beginners.
Look if you're alive, you eat. And if you eat, you shit. And if you shit, you have to shit on something - might as well be smash. That's what my grandpa always told me. He was a tekken player. Kaz main. He said son, i mean, grandson, look, if it don't have movement inputs, it ain't a fighting game. I said whatever Pawpaw, wavedash is a movement input if you think about it. He said don't talk to me until you can throw electrics in your sleep, lil bitch. He was a hardass... but i bet he'd play smash now that Kaz is out. What an old chunk of coal. Miss you Pawpaw
@@peteelderman8606 You know, I enjoyed smash prior to reading your comment, but you convinced me. RIP Pawpaw
@@peteelderman8606 that was funny
There are multiple characters that have 0 to death combos, Kazuya is one of them.
No one in the games has true 0 to death combos except. Except for kazuya
@Mike Kyeame not true
@@mikekyeame975 Luigi for example if he gets a down throw at low percent and combos it right. Ice climbers also can 0 to death if you desync grab and time the hits between each character. Sora can zero to death if on a platform Mario can do a lot of different 0 to deaths that are different depending on character stage. Steve can 0 to death with the right block setups and a bunch of others if he has diamond tools. Wario can 0 to death with his waft charged up fully. Sephiroth can instantly kill at any percent with a shield break or if you stand still for whatever reason with the right spacing on gigaflare forward smash. Joker can 0 to death on a platform. Isabelle can 0 to death in a corner. Pichu can lightning loop you into a spike from anywhere on the stage if they do it right. ROB can stunlock you into death if they time their hits right. Kazuyas 0 to death is just a lot more consistent than some of these. Steve is more broken though imo.
@@mikekyeame975Ice climbers have the same if not better ability to zero to death. Nobody places them but they have genuine true zero to deaths.

So some information for TMM regarding smash Kazuya:
-he was given the absolute majority of his tekken moveset including the 10hit combo as meme
-ewgf has more hitstun than it looks like, by default having 46 framesnof advantage and also being 1 frame more lenient with your A press(a is if my terminology is correct the equivalent to 2?) but electric cant usually combo into itself.
-MOST of the combos seen here were true, kazuya takes situational awareness as players can influence the launch angles so ontop of ur electrics you gotta adjust ur position so u cns follow up properly instead of just learning the combo, which causes a huge varoety in true follow ups if you react to this directional influence(DI).
-kazuya has the biggest combo potential in this game thanks to electric and can reliably kill off 99%of his moves, but it takes insane execution
-tea and riddles are also the 2 biggest contender for being the worlds best smash kazuya, tea focusing more on kaziya than riddles does, riddles treating him like a secondary rather than main
You can actually combo electric into itself in smash. They can tryove midair to make you miss the electric but frames wise you can do at least six without worrying about them being able to press anything at all, even frame one options.
some notes from a smash player:
- electric to up-smash (sorry idk the tekken name) is a true confirm, but the one getting combo'd has the ability to mix up their drift. this is commonly referred to as "DI"
- kazuya is one of the most oppressive characters in the game when he's in advantage state since he's one of very few who can almost always score a kill when he lands a hit. his trade-off is that he is the only character with a slow jump, making his disadvantage state awful (every character jumps on frame 3, kazuya on frame 7).
- riddles is often referred to as the best FGC player in the smash community, because his most notable and best characters are Ryu and Ken from SF, Terry from KoF and Kazuya. he actually mains Kazuya alongside Terry
- lastly: since smash only has an attack, special and grab button, the had to make his move set a lot different compared to the rest of smash's cast:
instead of the normals being
- A
- A (hold)
- Up + A
- Down + A
- Side + A
he has
- A (i think that's 1 1 2 in tekken)
- A (hold) (that's 10-hit combo)
- back + A (flash tornado)
- down-back + A (stature smash)
- down + A (nejiri uraken)
- down-forward + A (tsunami kick)
- forward + A (oni front kick)
- up-forward + A (four times) (roundhouse to triple spin kicks (not sure if that's in tekken like that))
- up + A (twin pistons)
- up-back + A (jump side kick)
he's also the only character with different moves when crouching (crouch jab, crouch spin kick and tombstone crusher) and the only one who has a "while un-crouching" attack (demon god fist)
his command moves are all the regular shoryu input (will type as 'dp') from almost all FGs + a button:
- dp (without button) (crouch dash)
- dp + A (either wind god fist or electric, depending on the timing)
- dp + A (hold A) (dragon uppercut)
- dp + B (hellsweep)
- dp + grab (gates of hell)
While uncrouching is referred to as while standing to tekken players. You might add that and yes the upwards a spin to kick is similar in Tekken
Gates of hell isn't a DP motion. It's DF D DF
@@whiffunderscore703 in smash it’s pretty much a dp motion do a dp it’ll come out every time.

It’s interesting to see him apply his experience so something familiar yet SO different. I thoroughly enjoy videos like this. :)
A lot of kazuya's risk comes from how badly he suffers in disadvantage. He can have a hard time landing and can spend a lot of time defending and trying to get in, but when he does he can absolutely explode you in a few hits.
I misread the title. For some reason, I expected you to play against Riddles in T7 with Kazuya dittos.
6:44 yes lol this is a true combo, being someone who’s picked up tekken due to playin in smash tournaments wit kaz watchin these are hilarious
love this Mirror Match👍
Pog. More smash please main man
You're awesome mm love the vids as always!
You should watch Ryu Ken and Terry matches from top players too!
I don’t know if you are reading this Tmm but Kazuya is smash essentially has to make a read every time he lands an electric and what came before and after in the combo just needs high execution
Ofc there are some Option Selects that help the Kazuya players but it’s still really demanding both on having a read and the execution
Combos also vary depending on percent because of knockback distance not only hitstun. Also, your percent matters sometimes since you get rage on higher percent which also increases your knockback on the opponent. Furthermore, combos or hits in sequence depend largely on "di", which is the ability to influence the direction you are dragged toward when hit. That's why it's called a "true combo" -- combos that hit no matter how good the di of the opponent is
Because Kazuya and Tekken is a heavy ground game (where Street fighter, jumping is encouraged as part of the fighting formula) they gave Kazuya additional frames to his jump squat, making it so him jumping takes a couple more frames than the rest of the cast. Really well made character in smash and what made me play tekken for the first time.
Kazuyas hitstun is what allows you to do those elaborate combos out of ewgf. It's pretty unique to him, most don't stay in hitstun for that long after other characters stun moves

i'm not gonna sugarcoat it 😈
sick that you're reacting to smash. would LOVE to see you react to melee -- that game seems a little bit more up your alley. while ultimate does have some pretty technical stuff, melee's movement and tech is INSANE.
No. No tekken in melee
Tea was soooo good! No wonder he had the gold skin, haha.
Riddles plays tekken!!! You guys should link up for games some time thatll be the sickest collab
you'd love soulcalibur
2:22 Not every character in Smash gets a guaranteed Touch-of-Death combo like Kazuya, where he can just grab throw into EWGF full-hop neutral-air spike repeat into up-smash, or even set up a platform tech-chase and confirm a Demon God Fist to make the opponent crumple (fall in place) with enough advantage frames to use a kill move, or as we saw EWGF into up-smash
Though some characters have comeback mechanics or gimmicks that help with that, where even three attacks can take an entire stock
Just watch the kazuya sakurai presentation. It’s sick
MainMan a riddles fan hell yea
You guys should play each other in Tekken
Think it like Kazuya moved to the top row in T7, he is the dlc of smash XD
Its so cute when he reacts to Smash Ultimate
Let's go! Smash content on MainMan channel :)))
Ayy just so you know dude… he is a touch of death character. Those 30 to deaths were true and that 0 to death was true. In this game certain characters do have faster escape options. For example tsunami to electric won’t work on characters with escape options frame 2 or faster.
Kazuya's f+1+2 (forward smash) is so disgustingly strong if it clean hits here, it's essentially a death fist.
Facts
the commentator in the back looks like Key from Key and Peele
You should see if riddles is down for a collab! He can discuss the gameplay a bit and make an interesting video on both ends
Kazuya in this game excels off punishment and whiffs in general, electric is an extremely strong tool.
His moves all have some form of invincibility and crazy priority, Hess great at locking down space or challenging other hitboxes. tons of conversions from buttons like d1, db4, twin piston 1, etc etc
Kazuya is fairly difficult in smash not only because his inputs are fairly tough (electric is 2 frame input instead of 1 but still can be tough to do consistently) but because his combos involve constant reactions to DI. Other comments have explained DI so I won't but yeah you can't just do the same combo every time, you need to react to the blue di indicator after every electric which can be really difficult. On top of that he has the ferps tech which is a way to extend combos on platforms that involves a lot of difficult inputs (for smash players: it's an IRAR (delayed) IDJ nair into buffered crouch jabs, and you have to react to their tech option)
Kazuya is Awsome in smash, his attacks looks and sounds unreal in their brutality, he is also much like smash ultimate asa whole, very well balanced in my opinion.
Kaz vs Kaz is just ultra volatile and fast as match up.
He said in his video, his kazuya wasn't good this day compare to his Terry bogard
I don't watch a lot of competitive smash, you would be surprised what my 2nd most interesting competitive moment was:

Man I love tekken, and I love Smash, but boy do I hate trying to do electrics on gamecube controller lol. Its like to play kaz on smash you need a hitbox or something
the zero to death stuff is like a kazuya and luigi thing. most characters aren't like that in smash.
Ice climbers too
Btw for some people who don’t know especially Tmm.there’s a smash term for Mirror Match called Ditto Match or just Ditto. the reason why it’s called like that because there’s a pokemon name ditto that can copy any pokemon and people.

I feel like he will end up liking Tekken more than Smash though hahaha. Especially rn Smash has a lot of bs with Minecraft Steve & there ain't gonna be other patches for the game, besides everything in Smash Ultimate is too safe, the game has a lot of neutral thats why I prefer Smash Bros. Melee besides it is quicker & more technical but there is less neutral & feels more smooth.
the last hit is not a true combo you can watch a little blue arrow which is directional influence you can influence where you will be launch so riddle have to read the di, so this combo isn't true more like a mix up but you guess right before that it was true combo
Kazuya has stupid high damage in Smash. He has moves that deal like 40%. Keep in mind in Smash for most characters 100% is considered kill percent.
Kazuya is by far the best fighter type character in Smash, he even got a really good projectile with the laser so he has a safe long range neutral game as well.
Definitely don't apologize for using Tekken terminology, that's one of the cool parts of seeing you watch Smash.
