- "The Great Society" is unveiled at the Democratic National Convention in Honor of Lyndon Baines Johnson's 100th Birthday. Through personal stories, the video provides a visual recording of some of the highlights of the Great Society and examines how these programs changed the landscape of this country during a pivotal moment in American history.

+Sherpaful I agree....the great society in some aspects was a failure...but LBJ grew up in Johnson City a poor place even today...I think he had the best of intentions, but human nature is hard to predict...

For everyone also in history class, "LBJ was an American President who cared for the people, no matter their race or their social status. Even to this day, we are reaping the benefits of this man's legacy, whether it be through the programs he started or the bills he created. LBJ truly was a spectacular president, and we can all thank him for that."

Love it! What a guy LBJ was. So many programs we still use today.
We should give more credit to LBJ for all he accomplished by working with everyone to pass bills. Today, it is all about stalling legislation.

in the United States. People, the elderly have medical attention in their golden years.
Kids have health care, it is wonderful.

big govt. to regulate it. T.R. Country is a big success just for this, it is a great

He was rated as one of the top five pres. of all time on a history channel documentary some while back. He is finally getting his just due. He was one of the top three I think. He just was the last soldier in the anti-communist cold war
left over from Korea and carried it on.

He had many times the political acumen of Truman. Not always ethical but always in control. Harry was ethical
but Johnson used the means to justify the end. It was the most remarkable political period of history in the U.S.
wherein power was shifted toward the
people. Underneath all of the manuevering behind the scenes was a plan to help everyone. Something only LBJ could have done with such an accumulation of power , it was the best thing to happen to the U.S. ever.
Love him or hate him he did do a lot of good,and no other president since LBJ can hold a candle to his positive acheivements.The greatest president of my lifetime (born in '65)!

The funny thing is that by addressing poverty...one deals a death blow to a significant cause of crime. Asserting any other means of dealing with crime is mere blown smoke.

You should also learn how he got elected to the US Senate in 1948 by 87 votes and what he did to nail down that victory and you should also learn about Herman and George Brown of "Brown and Root," a big construction company that Johnson turned into Halliburton.
In LBJ's first year in office, he accomplished more than many presidents did in their entire administration. Vietnam was his nemesis, and hindered his ability to focus upon domestic issues from 1966 onward. A graceful exit from Vietnam during his Presidency would have had LBJ on a coin by now.
I do not know about that statement. He was very unpopular because of the War
in Nam. Tragically it was his undoing. Now he is overlooked because of it.

The Great Society ultimately failed though in the long run, not because of LBJ's work but because of his successors. Reagan, Clinton, Bush, Obama, and now Trump undid so much, and the issues that LBJ tried to solve (student loan debt, moving from an industrial economy, the environmental crisis, healthcare, etc) are the very problems we have today.

Over one thousand pieces of legislation were passed into law during that time, to help.. MLK and the marches forced civil rights to the front burner. LBJ wanted to be the best pres. of them all. The history channel, in a program aired not long ago rated him in the
top five. Wash,. Lincoln, T.R. FDR and LBJ. Johnson came from poverty
and never forgot the people.

demanding the government does not take out loans for projects that benefit the public and will raise the overall level of wealth (if done correctly, leading to a larger tax base) is like demanding you cant take out a car loan or a mortgage or student loans since you cant afford those on a single paycheck

We need a president who is not obsessed with being "nice" and reaching out to a GOP that wants no part of bi-partisanship. We need a leader who can get things done domestically like LBJ did....Obama...what a disappointment.

This huge part of poverty will be alleviated. Things are much better for G.S. programs now, particularly the community mental health services. Children would be hungry etc...Fed student loans, truth in lending, clean air and water,civil rights, voting rights, These are only a very tiny fraction of G.S.
programs which changed our lives.
