My favourite 80s band. Working With Fire and Steel is a severely underrated piece of new wave art. I saw them live at Rewind North this year, and while they were great, I think their live performances could use a little polish, a few things here and there. Mainly, I wish the drummer would use a drum pad or drum machine. Songs like Wishful Thinking and Tragedy and Mystery are elevated significantly by the sound of the smacking impactful programmed drum sound, but when it’s a real drum kit that sound is lost, and then they sound like every other band that plays to little crowds in pubs and so forth. Also wish the synthesiser was more prominent. They are after all a synth-pop band, and what with synth-pop making a comeback with the likes of modern artists like The Weeknd, Dua Lipa, the 1975, Olly Alexander from Years and Years, and Gaga among others, bands like China Crisis who spearheaded the genre back in the day should not be afraid to put the synthesiser front and centre.
