I'm a few years late to the party but I just got a well used P7700 for under $100(half of which was shipping...ugh). Main issue was the rear buttons; opened it up and with a Qtip and isopropyl managed to get them working again. This is not the recommended solution, ideally just replace the whole button assembly which is all 1 piece. This is just to say, I've opened several compact cameras including an RX100V, which was not fun, to modify for infrared(not this time though), and the P7700 was one of the easiest, considering it's a more advanced compact it's fairly easy to repair what seems to be a common issue.
@@starscream25I didn't as mine was every button except the wheel.. Checking some ifixit pics, it appears to have plastic nubs that go through the board, not sure if its just press fit or glued too. Without opening you could start with contact cleaner or dunk the whole board in isopropyl(99%)
i have a pretty similiar predecessor camera. Its called the Coolpix 5400 :D Pretty similiar specs (as for its time), high res video (480p in 2003 :O), very similiar form factor, also RAW capabilities and a quite similiar lens (2.7 darker aperture, and less zoom, but also known great for its macro capabilities). Oh, and a 1/1.8 sensor (goin up to iso 400!). Nikon does the best "premium" compact cameras for sure
I truly like the image quality and zoom range of this gem. Unfortunately, it has one FATAL FLAW! - the AF is truly GLACIAL. What's wrong with Nikon? Even in broad daylight it sometimes doesn't lock on. The newer p7800 failed to address this crucial issue. Same ugly speed. Pathetic. I hope there is a firmware update soon. The image quality rivals my APSC Sony Nex5n, but the af speed is truly prehistoric:(
How would you compare this with the Lumix LX7? Especially in low-light and for group portraits. Trying to decide between the this and Lumix. Been a fan of the Lumix GF1.
Great fast and simple review. I tried looking for a video on the P7800 but there aren't many to choose from. Maybe you can compare them? What competes with this model? Canon G16? My must have options for a run and gun point and shoot are manual focus. External mic port and 1080p. Thanks

AWESOME camera! just bought one myself ... same issues with the butons and menu wheel, were you able to open the wheel for cleaning?

oh gosh how do u remove the lens ring? it's really tight
I bought the 7700. Are there any accessories I can buy for the camera, like a cable shutter release or external mic?
Gregory A. I'm not entirely sure about a cable shutter release, but there are mics and other accessories you can get
Ok thanks. I will try to look for them.
Yes I cannot find a compatible mic
Would this be good for a begginet
