Thank you!!! You saved me! I was using a Butterick pattern and the instructions were horrible when it came to sewing the sides together. I had no clue until watching your helpful video.
IM RUSHING A PROJECT AND AM SELF TAUGHT SO A LITTLE STUPID AT TIMES AND OH MY GOD YOURE SO SMART AND IDK WHY IVE BEEN SEWING VESTS LIKE A TODDLER THIS WHOLE TIME BUT YOURE A GENIUS THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND RESOURCES FOR THE FELLOW IDIOTS (ME)
As requested, I paused to respond: Audio quality is excellent, so far; crisp & clear with no background noise or other distortions. So, I appreciate your extra effort. Pausing to like, then back to the video. PS Your ideas of mix and match pieces for the capsule wardrobe look like wonderful choices. I'm interested to see what you pick next ( I think, tho, I am commenting a long time after you posted this. Infact, it looks like a year.) And, since you requested feedback, I think the vest looks really cute! I bet the armhole adjustment will make it a bit more comfy.
Aww thank you so much for taking the time to leave your feedback, Catherine! Hehe, yes my video from last fall/winter are just starting to get picked up around now but I am glad you found this one! xxx
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO I CANT TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES IVE WATCHED IT IVE MADE 3 vests using your method❤️❤️and currently working on one for my final project in school❤️❤️you’re a sewing goddess
Came here to see the work it takes to make a vest.... left with a found appreciation of the skills I do not possess! I'll need a lot of practice. Good luck to you!
This was a really good tutorial and it helped me while making a vest last week! mine looks completely different but I used some of the techniques you did! lots of love 💕
This turned out very cute! I think your finishing for the side seems is pretty genius and if I ever make something like this i will definitely try it. That buttonholer is awesome! This turned out beautiful and I look forward to the rest of the series
@@gwenheng I always want to sew for other seasons! During summer I want to sew for winter and now I want to sew up all of the spring things. My winter wardrobe is woefully light and way more modern than I would like but you ba e definitely inspired me to do something about that before the season is over
Thank you so much! I'm making a vest for the first time, following written instructions, and there were a couple of steps I really didn't understand. Your video helped a lot! And that trick to avoid hand-sewing on the first side seem was really neet!
I loved this video, its a good tutorial. I watched dozens of videos about vest sewing, but I was very confused in all of them. Now I'm going to make my own pattern and sew it. You explained the lining part very well, finally I could understand how to sew lining to a vest. thank you so much😍😍
The vest (and you!) are adorable! Thank you so much for such a useful video- I've saved it for reference. It looks wonderful on you, by the way! I'm your newest subscriber.
omg I’ve never thought of using an overhand knot to secure days! I have always used a square or weavers knot but those inevitably pull a few stitches… I am so excited to try your method!!!
Thank you for this video!! And for showing the self drafting process because I want to make myself a vest but cant find a pattern in my size that I like so this is way better ❤
Thank you sooo much for this tutorial! I am in the middle of sewing a lined vest Butterick Pattern number 6843 and sadly, it seems there is a huge gap missing in the directions on how to sew the front to the back at the side seams. With your tutorial, I was able to figure it out and finish my project-just in time for a Christmas potluck!
❤❤❤ Love this! So cute! About the drag, verify that your back neckline isn't too small, because that will push out at the front as it tries to make up the space (I hope that makes sense?); I have had that issue before and it may also help with the extra shoulder width. It helped for me: I widened the back neckline, matched the original front neckline and trued the shoulders.
Hehe thank you for the suggestion! I have looked into it and I think it could be my sloping shoulders! I pinned the ends of the shoulders (the end next to the armholes) and there was no dragline. That said, I really oughta make a new sloper. This sloper I have is almost a year old. I'll check my back neckline when I do that too!! Hey, how about a sloper drafting / fitting video? XD
@@rd6203 It would be *a* sloper video but I can’t promise that it would be a *good* sloper video 😅 Well, I took the drafting classes years and years ago but never really used my sloper since because I had different priorities in my life then. So.. the first time I revisited it again was earlier this year! 😄
@@gwenheng I can relate. I went around seven years without any thought to spare for it at all and when I came back to it, learned that it's not quite like riding a bike 😅
The pink sleeveless vest you are wearing that is gorgeous, did you make this. I am starting dressmaking, as I cannot find any clothes in shops I like. ❤ Linda
So great but you are so tiny that most of us would require a much larger pattern. I love the idea but I would not know where to start. Is there a comparable paper pattern you can recommend to us? You are absolutely adorable. First time finding you.
Hi Ola! Thank you for watching! I haven't made a men's vest before but for a free option, I suggest searching for one online. I found this one but it's only one size: www.ralphpink.com/tommy-waistcoat-sewing-pattern/ For paid option, I found this Simplicity pattern: simplicity.com/simplicity/s1506 Etsy has tons of PDF sewing patterns too! Like I said, I haven't used any of these patterns so I can't vouch for their fit etc. But I hope this is helpful in getting you started. Good luck with your search and keep us updated!! xx G
The slop of your shoulder seam is off, resulting in the bunching at the shoulder. Raising the shoulder at the neckline, then redrawing the shoulder seam to the existing point where it meets the armscye ought to do the trick.
Yeahhhh I know... and I am so sorry about that! It's been a couple of years since I made this video and I have learnt so much about what shows up well in a video explanation. 😩
Well, you're really helpful. I'm just a little stuck on finishing a vest. It's ridiculously complicated for a garment that has only 6 pieces. : ) @@gwenheng
I'm knitting some boy's British style vests and sewing a woman's 1980s vest pattern. I am looking at the different fabrics people are using to get ideas. I started out just wanting something for warmth around the house but now am looking at some design ideas. Thanks for your videos. I might go more a hippy look than business like. Why look business like when I have no business skills or talents? And no stewardess look of wanting to make the customer happy. Not my style. Military as in a Scots marching band - hmm, maybe. Give me the drums, please. I do have a family tartan, actually.
I lik your delivery style very much but I think mixing inches and centimetres all at the same time is a bit muddling. I really liked your end garment. well done you.
Can u put a link for the pattern you made?:)
I added photos of my drafted pattern on my blog here: gwenstellamade.com/how-to-sew-lined-vest-draft-your-own-pattern/

Yes I had an issue with the shoulders for the sloper I used in this series. Thanks for the tip! Hopefully I won't have this issue in the future! :)
my gut tells me the neckline is just too close to the neck. I'd try making the V wider.
But were you able to try out the armhole method?

Could i make it without darts? Thanks
Yes! It’s just that it won’t be as fitted. ✨
