I totally agree with Chris about putting a limit on pickleball paddle power or else the game is becoming just too much like tennis. Pickleball should be about finesse and strategy instead of ‘who has the most powerful paddle wins’. One of the guy in my pickleball group plays with a Gearbox Pro and most of his volleys, forehands and overheads are just outright winners - this paddle generate such ridiculous power that it takes away the rallying in the game - which is the most fun part of pickleball.
I am one of your RUclips viewers of the podcast. Personally viewing the podcast is easier to take in your information. Myself and some other viewers will like to see some of the paddles discussed in your reviews. This will help with processing your information on the paddles. Too many model names with the company to remember but can recall colors or the designs of paddles we maybe interested in or not. Thank you for your helpful information .
I agree 100 percent, i think its the mass behind the paddle creates more springboard effect on the ball with the 16, almost like a delay springboard. I like tysons 14 but i am an Invikta guy and they are almost exactly same shape. I love the hyperion the best for versatility.
I believe the paddles are getting out of control. When I go to the courts, it is amazing how fast people that never hit the ball hard are making everyone afraid of getting hit.
Great takes Chris. I totally agree that the game is more fun, unique, and enjoyable when played with softer paddles. I really hope USA pickleball takes a stance on this soon
Great pod one of your best. Congratulations on the gold!!! That's a tough question on limiting the paddle or the ball. Would limiting the speed of the ball also limit the spin? I'm not sure??? I'm so close to pulling the pin on the Colin. I play a hybrid shape paddle now but the swing weight and twist weight seems like the Scorpius is the right choice. Looking forward to more content from you.
Chris's suggestion to use a slower ball as a solution to the issue of increasingly powerful pickleball paddles is an interesting one, but it's important to consider the potential drawbacks and limitations of this approach. A slower ball might not address the root of the problem, which is the technological advancement in paddle design. As paddles continue to evolve, simply changing the ball might not be a sufficient long-term solution. Players might still find ways to maximize power with new paddle technologies, leading to a continuous cycle of adjustments in equipment standards. Using a slower ball might seem like a straightforward solution to counteract the increasing power of pickleball paddles, it could introduce new challenges and might not be effective in maintaining the integrity and appeal of the sport. A more comprehensive approach, possibly involving stricter regulations and standards for paddle manufacturing, might be necessary to address the issue effectively.
No one seems to address the health benefits received by some paddles, I now play with a Gearbox Pro, I'm 73 & while using other paddles, I've experienced elbow & wrist inflammation, after doing some research on the Gearbox Pro, I concluded that because of how it absorbs vibrations and the forces from impact, it may be a healthier alternative, it worked, no more tennis elbow....!
Guys, have you tried the Chorus Overshield pickleball glasses? I am recommending to so many players now to consider using protective glasses. Currently the lowest price glasses I recommend are the Carbon. Thanks for everything you do.
Happy birthday Will. To your question. I think paddle regulation is the only way to go as there is too much variation in balls (and environments) to put the regulation on balls. The USAP regulation on balls is a bounce height of 30" - 34" when dropped from 78". That's a huge difference and doesn't even take into account the differences in temperature, humidity, and altitude. And since there is no way to adjust balls (e.g. via inflation) for different climates I see no way to regulate balls unless USAP dramatically adjusts the tolerance to make all balls bounce the same (which would be great for the sport). And glad to see Chris understand the situation here in South FL. People rave about the X-40 up north but it sucks here in FL. As soon as they are left in the sun or played with for a game or two they turn into marshmallows with no restitution. If you are using an X-40 day after day would you also use tennis balls day after day instead of bring a new can? The analogy is real.
I'm completely convinced that CJ was using a gen 3 Joola in his mixed dubs bronze match from LA last weekend, and a completely different model in men's gold. There is such a noticeable difference in the musical pitch of the sound that CJ's paddle makes in each match. When compared to Tyson's Magnus (which makes the same pitch in both matches) CJ's men's doubles paddle pitch is a major 7th higher (or 11 halfsteps higher). In mixed dubs, CJ's paddle pitch is only a minor 3rd higher (or 3 halfsteps higher). The only way this could happen is by using a significantly different paddle, no doubt. Think of it like a drum set. CJ's gen 3 is like a tom tom and his (presumably) gen 2 is like a snare.
He’s definitely using it in mixed. Just not mens. The match where he played Ben in mixed, it’s very obvious the difference in sound between his and Ben’s paddle.
I was close to buying the Joola after hitting with it at the LA Open, McGuffin model but will wait to see what becomes of it over time. Decided t finally get the Huarache + for now tho!
Cap the paddles using a coefficient of restitution test. Capping only the ball results in vast differences between players with different paddles. As the paddles continue to become more powerful the ball would need additional reductions in speed. This would result in most "standard" paddles becoming unplayable or at least noncompetitive.
I think the idea of pickleball that has always separated it from tennis has always been the kitchen. The introduction of power paddles has diluted this. Paddles are becoming more and more powerful and it’s slowly turning this game into let’s see how hard we can hit the ball and it rewards players not for their skill but just for the fact that nobody can react fast enough to hit the ball. I wouldn’t be surprised if single tournaments move away from cat and mouse and completely neglect the kitchen and become purely baselines rallies because nobody can run to the kitchen fast enough. I think the consumer market for pickleball is crazy. Joola released the most powerful and poppy paddles and convinced everyone that they should pay even more money to still have the same QC issues while also turning the game into a degraded form of tennis. Meanwhile the pickleball associations are worried about serves being a weapon even though they are not really enforcing it on players. It’s amazing. 😂
A slower ball would be the least complicated solution. But I'm not a fan of playing with soft or dead balls. I prefer that crisper feel that the faster playing balls provide. Gen2 thermo power levels with a fast playing balls seems like the sweet spot.
I've been saying it out loud to my screen for months that they way to go is to regulate the ball and slow it down. Glad to hear others coming around. Speeding up the paddles only slows down the game and makes it boring.
Chris explanation on why he likes the 14mm over the 16mm is exactly how I felt with the DBD 16mm. I am curious if I would like the 14mm DBD more….great video.
i think most of the issues with paddles being "too hot" are rectified by using an x40 ball. vulcans are pretty good, too. the era of the dura is basically over, and that's a good thing for the sport. i wouldnt mind if the paddles were dialed back slightly, but i also believe we're at the limit now - and that's fine.
Chris - did you do a review of the Huaraches? I'm hitting with the Vatic Pro Flash 14mm, and I actually really like the Scorpeus 14mm "Gen 2"... Curious, how does it compare to these two paddles?
Yes, change and standardize the ball! Paddles should be regulated by exit velocity, liberated when it comes to spin/grit. But if we all played with the X-40 or similar, the game would be safer and more fun.
For me I'm with you Chris and Zane about more spin and control would make the game funner and better to watch. The "Trainer" idea sounds fun too. The Gen 3 has a patent cost to consider like the Gearbox Pro. They got creative to get around GB patents with the foam tech. Chris is now a 5.0, congrats. Make it a shrit. For sure slow the ball.
My Gen2 Perseus is core crushed so deciding between whether to get another Gen 2 Perseus, a different Gen 2 paddle, or one of the new Joola Gen 3 paddles (either the Perseus or the Magnus). I'm only about a 3.5 to 3.75 (on a good day).
I don't think they'll be able to stop the paddles from being too powerful soon enough? but I think that they could easily implement a ball change. But they definitely need to do something.
Remember when the crbn 1x was band due to having to much grit or having too much spin? I’m wondering if you were to test that same paddle now versus the new joola paddles if it were to pass the tests now.
I'm the 100th comment, Pickleball Studio is getting big! Great content as always, you guys need to come to Cincy to play, APP is here in a couple weeks.
What’s everyone’s thoughts on just using the Joola Gen 3 as a singles paddle? I really want to use the Magnus as my singles paddle, and my Sixzero Ruby as my doubles paddle.
Enjoyed the podcast. I made it to the kitchen. There are substantially less companies that manufacturers pickleballs then paddles, so it would be easier to regulate them. The pickleball governing body would need to develop more precise and stringent regulations that companies would need to follow in manufacturing their pickleballs to slow them down. Also, require tournaments to use only certain types of pickleballs based upon if the tournaments are played in hotter or colder climates.
For the kitchen discussion, if paddles are playing different based on the geographic region then it seems the ball would be the most consistent thing to control. However, if the ball plays different as well, then it's prob best to cap the max power of a paddle. Either way, if the geographic region changes things that drastically it's a very difficult problem to solve.
1:00:30 Chris, if you look at the shadow of the drop shot you called out, the center of the ball is out. Part of the shadow does hit the line, but most of it is outside the line. I guess lighting and shadow angle might make a difference, but I don't think your line call was unreasonable. I have been having trouble with line calls myself. No fun.
I demoed all the gen 3 Joola. Coming from 14mm CRBN 1 and more recently 14mm Forza Mach 1 the easiest to transition to was the 14mm Hyperion. Basically, the same shape and weight. The dink game was good, but the resets were harder to control. Perhaps with lead tape at the base might reduce the pop-ups. The spin was slightly less than the Forza but very very close. With the increase velo with the spin does provide an advantage to the serves. The biggest positive was hitting my one hand backhand which sometimes doesn't have the depth or pop I would like. With the Joola my backhand easily hit more depth with a smaller swing. I my control was worse, but I think that is something that would improve with time. I'm 50/50 on purchasing one.
Kitchen Comment: My favorite ball is the Gamma Quick KIds 36 practice ball (nerf ball), it's a ton of fun. BTW - I am a 70 year old (3.5 at best), athletically challenged control player ;-}
Got my Perseus Gen 3 a few days ago. Not nearly the power and snap of the GB PPe. The Gen 3 plays much like a new Legacy Pro with maybe slightly less power than the LP. The difference between the GB and everything else is still vast.
Friendly reminder to the audience that amazon paddles are getting cheaper and closer compared to the big brand named paddles. Many of these paddles are also USAPA approved so if you really like saving money, there are options a plenty.
I have a 16mm and 14mm flash prism And I use the 14, I like the pop more. I started with the 16 and bought a 14 when i needed a new one so I used the 16 a lot first.
In JKs data base the Collin Johns gen 3 only hits 3 or 4 mph faster in serve and pop tests than my Forza Mach 2. Seems like the tests are leave a little to be desired as it seems like they hit a lot harder than three or 4 miles an hour from my Forza
I got my Perseus gen 3 16mm yesterday and test it out. I don't felt it power like the RUclipsr claim it be. It felt just like any other paddle in term of power. Maybe the paddle is new and need to break in. I am a disappointed consider it cost $280.
More on the Joola stuff... their site was so congested on launch day, when you would go to place your order, I got an error saying it didn't go thru, and to try again. So I did, and got the same error. So I said screw it, will wait a little bit for the site to calm down and start working again once people chilled out... Well lo' and behold both of those orders did in fact get placed, I checked my email and had 2 order confirmations. I wrote in to cancel one duplicate order, and the funds have still have not been credited back to my account. I emailed a rep again, and asked about it, and they said their finance team is on it, but that issue happened to so many other people as well, they have a long list of people to refund. I ended up cancelling both my orders all together because my main first order, had been in "processing" for a whole week now - so now I am waiting on both order totals to get credited back to my bank account... if I do end up wanting to get one I will just order thru PBC.
I don’t mind the evolution of the new paddles, for younger players who’ll carry the sport forward, it’s a good thing. When I get a kid who wants to play “whack a mole” I just keep ball low, then watch him launch a few out the back of the court. The problem for me is I’m 59 with fast hands but my eyesight isn’t what it used to be. In certain conditions like shadows or bad lighting, I lose valuable milliseconds trying to pick up the ball in flight, and that’s when it becomes dangerous. Really, it’s just a matter of choice- know what level you are and play within your capabilities.
I'm in the same boat and agree with what you say. When the time comes that I can't keep up, rather than drag everyone else down to my level by restricting the games evolution, I'll adjust the level I play at........ or get a more powerful paddle :)
Actually, I really thought that Ben was using the new paddle and that he didn’t adjust well to it. So many of his return serves went out, his resets very high. Chris said that these new paddles are power and I never thought Ben needed more power, his play is about strategic placement and resets. To be clear, you do not pop a ball to him because he already has the power to put it away. I do think Colin and Anna are using their new paddles because they are on fire right now.
The new paddles will just require everyone to adapt. That's what makes the game fun and challenging. I like it. If we want to be "purists", then we should all go back to using the plywood paddles. Regarding the US Open event and how much better it is, that is encouraging to hear. I have played in one PPA event and it was a mess. For the price that PPA charges and how the tournament is ran, it is a joke IMO. One way you can compare is the video quality of the RUclips videos that PPA posts. Someone needs to tell them it's 2024 and we can record video in a higher resolution. Have sound on the video that works without bleed in from the other announcer, etc. I can go on, but you get the hint.
the sad and worrisome thing is new players hear that "power" word and spend tons for it, with no idea how to control that power. if you don't know where the ball is going to go, you have no business hitting hard.
I literally can’t use the 16MM because the handle is so thick. The 14MM is still thick, but actually useable. If you use a hesacore grip, the 16MM is disgustingly thick, the 14MM not so bad.
I would agree that the Ruby was and continues to be the most overly-hyped paddle thus far this year. If the Azul and J2K are as good, the price alone gives them a leg up.
I've heard rumors that PPA pros are wanting to get rid of amateur matches instead of the other way around. I would rather have it like the U.S. Open but sounds doubtful
To answer the kitchen question, the paddles definitely need a cap. If you try to only change the ball, companies will just continue to make their paddle stronger and stronger until the softness of the ball won’t matter anymore.
Definitely think they should cap paddle performance as the starting point. After doing that then I'll vote for controlling the pace of the game with the ball since it seems like there are a lot less variables to manage for the ball than with paddle construction. If that's true, then it should be easier to measure and control the performance of the ball than it is to do that with the paddle. Just throwing my 2 cents into the kitchen discussion...
I demoed the Perseus 3 16mm for the 2nd time today. 2 hours of drills after playing with it 2.5 hrs yesterday. I have a month old Diadem 18k power pro in perfect condition for sale. 😅
@@benrakatansky8801 I was amazed. This has the plough through, pop and power of my Vatic V7 pro 16mm weighted yo 8.1 oz and control of NOTHING I have personally tried before. Just 4 hrs of demo time and my 3rd shot diagnol slice drops, normal drops and dinks are $. The spin on 2ey topspin BH cross ct dinks is 2nd to none. No weights, 1st demo had heavy edge guard tape and overwrap. Today's was straight from packaging to the court, it has so much power, at 70% I'm in control of placement. you must hit topspin or slice and side spin is sick! If you can't hit topspin, you'll have to learn and this wand is truly wicked. Finally, mine had a noticeable rattle that the guys at the club demonstrated to me upon returning mine for the drill sesh. In ending, my 18k power pro is weaker in performance in every dept. I will demo the Magnus (arrives tomorrow) prior to buying
RE: Ben playing with Gen2 skinned as a Gen3 - I know someone who was at the PPA LA Open. Ben gave him his paddle just after a match. Now I'll have to go take a closer look to see if it really is a Gen2 or if it is a Gen3.
Hey!! Love the content! Vatic just unveiled that they will be dropping a new power paddle, and i was wondering if you may have received a demo? If so I would LOVE if you could review it (preferably the hybrid shape) :)
I live in Florida and yea pretty much all the balls we play with in one session pretty much become a marshmallow so I think slower balls would probably be better for the game
Can we all agree to message melin and ask them to make a PPA or Pickleball hat where the seal on the bottom bill is a Pickleball ? I’m thinking a yellow and white hat would be sick
We heard something about a bang fest. Are we in the right spot?
Where do we sign up??
😂
Brayson @pickleballeffect just mentioned a bang fest as well. What aren’t they telling us?

It's ridiculous to pay so much for a paddle and have such poor QA. Paddle companies need to get out of the amateur league for manufacturing.

And I use the 14, I like the pop more.
Happy birthday Will!!
Maverix came out with a 15mm Havik-15 Pro (power) using P3 polypropylene and All-Court P2
@@echochapman7657Amen!
Maybe the 14" are more like the gb power pro elongated which I find so much easier to control than my perseus 16" gen 2
Looking for the Bang Fest?
John Kew has the Anna Bright Scorpeus as the most Pop of all the paddles he has tested.
Yes, Will. I paused and thought that doesn’t sound so bad. Oh, wait were we talking about pickleball…😂
I’m a 14mm guy as well I have the Perseus gen 3 14mm and I like it a lot more
the sad and worrisome thing is new players hear that "power" word and spend tons for it, with no idea how to control that power. if you don't know where the ball is going to go, you have no business hitting hard.
Happy Birthday, Will!!!
Thank you for sharing, very interesting video.
Happy Birthday, Will!
To answer the kitchen question, the paddles definitely need a cap. If you try to only change the ball, companies will just continue to make their paddle stronger and stronger until the softness of the ball won’t matter anymore.
Happy Birthday, Will!!!
Trainer paddle tournament would be cool. They do snoopy pole tournaments for fishing. Very good and fun idea
What’s it called on Amazon?
Franklin sweet spot trainer
Happy bday Will! 🎂👍
I have the edge power pro 18k. How different is the new Perseus?
@@joem6010 Any updates?
@kabnis2022 Not yet. I was at the courts today but the guy who got Ben's paddle was not there. Maybe tomorrow.
You think they will sell these on Amazon like the old paddles?
Good point as to the human factor variable can cause in metrics
Do you think the sound difference between Tyson and the johns brothers paddles could be Tyson is using 14mm? 4:00
Nope. 16mm makes a similar thunk noise.
Collin was definitely using it i in mixed
How does the scorpeus 14mm compare to the power air epic ? Would the Scorpeus have more power and control?
Happy Birthday, Will.
Just give me the Franklin x and you can do whatever you want to the paddles.
Ben and Colin are definitely NOT using GEN 3 paddles. Womp. Womp.
And Happy Birthday, Will!
What brand are the caps tonight???
$69.95 caps? Milen
My key question about the Joola is how long the grit will last. If it is very durable, 280 makes more sense.
it will last the same as all other rcf
Happy birthday, Will
Maybe proton is onto something consistency wise with their rubber type surface
Hey!! Love the content! Vatic just unveiled that they will be dropping a new power paddle, and i was wondering if you may have received a demo? If so I would LOVE if you could review it (preferably the hybrid shape) :)
Slow the paddles down. For amateur play you can use whatever ball you want so having powerful paddles can still be a problem.
4:40 Thank you, I've been saying this for a while.
Too lazy to scroll and see if anyone has told you, but Team Hanlon has your gold mixed match up on youtube
Slower ball is a good idea. easier to change than the paddles
Kitchen convo: slower ball.
It requires mental fortitude and skilled consistency rather than rewarding raw power.
Awesome Pause,,,
Happy birthday Will!
Chris, you should review the prince target exclusive paddle.
Hard balls leads to bang fests, I'd say let's just standardize the x40
I like the x40 it’s consistent.
I live in Florida and yea pretty much all the balls we play with in one session pretty much become a marshmallow so I think slower balls would probably be better for the game
use the selkirk ball and get rid of the joola and gearbox
Can we all agree to message melin and ask them to make a PPA or Pickleball hat where the seal on the bottom bill is a Pickleball ? I’m thinking a yellow and white hat would be sick
