SAVING My High School Z28 Camaro In 24 HOURS

- Опубликовано: 5 ноя 2024
- I bought my 1994 Chevy Camaro Z28 from high school back a few years ago, it was utterly destroyed. Since then I've started it about once a year and driven it 2 or 3 times. The exhaust was removed by a previous owner starting it was usually out of the question. The tires were completely bald with cords poking out, and the radio turned on with the parking lights. It was unquestionably bad. We're going to turn around all the major issues in 24 hours, and drive it to Cars and Coffee for the first time ever.

“Big lip so you can’t curb this wheel.” Spoken like a man of experience. I always get slightly oversized tires primarily for this reason. If they’re a little wider but don’t rub, you’ll hit rubber instead of wheel if you overshoot the mark when parallel parking.
Tires are cheaper than the rim's
I must be mr perfect, I haven't put gutter rash on a rim in about 20 years. Although I have had someone else do it to my old car when I was in prison
That Kenwood was hot stuff back in the day. It still looks great.
controlcommerce yeah my parents’ got stolen
JR found it for you, don't think he's giving it back though :)
I've got one wrapped up on my shelf as well. Nice units and I think I still have the remote for it as well. I know it is the excelion (believe that's correct) model regardless. Mine has bmx bikes in background. I pulled it out of my 1998 Chevrolet Silverado 4x4 step side before I sold it. That was a very clean and crisp sounding truck and had dynomax or dynaflow full exhaust (cannot remember). Sold the truck within an hour of posting and kept a couple things (including kenwood head unit above mentioned). Miss that truck, turned heads everywhere.
Bro I'm still rocking a kenwood, bought mine from the store 4 years ago, they get the job done for a great price.
What kind of kenwood radio that was
I have a 96 z28 with 300,000 miles and I love it
... The 5 days of the year it's actually running properly lol
Heck yeah! Mine is dead on 200 right now 💯
Wow I thought I had a lot of miles, I also have a '96 Z28, it has 104k
Haven't driven it in years
@@WatchJRGo copart time
WatchJRGo that’s awesome
I love this car but man are they a pain to work on for being a 90s car lol
Although if you are taking out the drivetrain I might be interested in it if it’s in good shape
My transmission is pretty worn out lol
Michael Ferrari yours is still new lol
These cars are too fun not to drive
Still have my old high school 1971 Trans Am and I have a 20 year high school reunion coming up this year. Time flies!
I wrecked my highschool car a mark 1 Renault Clio, I got air lifted to hospital my first helicopter ride haha
Wish I had my friends 69 Camero
Glad I don't have mine. It was a 78 ford LTD Landau 4 door- (vynl top on metal roof- not the greatest idea from ford). It did have a 302 motor and would burn 1 rear tire..
The trunk was huge (which did work great for speakers).
I kinda want to get my grandmother's 78 LTD and donk it..just because. It's a fairly perfect car with a 351 and I think 60 ish K miles.. I think it would look good as a donk..lol
Doyle smith nothing looks good as a donk
Keep it original. The Gen II LT1 is perfectly fine. I'm in the process of rebuilding my 1994 Formula Firebird my dad had while I was in highschool.
The only thing I didn’t like about the 4th gen LT1’s was the optispark, or at least it’s location. And trying to change spark plugs. But it can be built and a fine engine
I meant the LT1 in a 4th gen Camaro not a 4th gen LT1.
LT1 is the most common of the WS6 cars. He's not ruining anything.
@@pops55650 If the optispark has to be changed it's very inexpensive in terms of the part plus a lifetime warranty. Labor will run about 400-500 depending on where you have it done.
@@musicmasters314 WS6 is on pontiac side not camaro.
WS6 is not a Ramair.
WS6 is only the "Performence Suspension" thats it.
LS engines get all the love, for good reason, but the LT1 was a damn good engine that could make good HP for cheap.
It still does.
and the LT1 sounds better
JR: "LT1 is basically a boat anchor"
LT1: Breaks stick shift GM world record 3 times in 2 days.
I loved the LT1 in my 1995 TA. My current LS3 would destroy it, but the sound was substantially better from the LT1. It wasn't a difficult engine to work on once you got past the incredibly cramped engine compartments they were usually shoehorned into. OptiSpark issues were worked out by the 95 model year, so that wasn't an issue for me luckily.
That's a different LT1. Completely different generation.
@@hughjaskoch5456 No its not

I bought a 93 Z28 in 2001 when I was in the Navy, still own it today, so glad I hung onto it all these years.
Glad you were able to get yours back, there is something about a first car, they are a first love. My Camaro wasn't my first, but it was my first 6 speed, and it was the first really drivable fast car I had, and that made it special to me.
sell it to me
Been looking for my high school car too. You’re lucky to have found yours. Great channel JR!
what was your high school car?
@@pontiacmaniac7772 Mine was a $130 Walmart mountain bike.
1969 Pontiac Firebird 400, black on black with a 4-speed. Drove it from 1983-1984, sold it for $1700 (paid $1200) because I wasn’t sure it would make the drive from NC to CO.
I'm trying to look for a 2005 dodge neon 5 speed silver
judson r Damn that is a nice car. I want to get a 67 or 68 one day and turn it into a restomod.
1987 Z28 was my first car at 16 back in 2003. Black and silver. Got my first speeding ticket in that thing. Loved the hell out of it, and still remember the VIN by heart 16 years later. 😂
I'm pretty sure Car Wizard can come up with some uses for that LT1 V8 you claim is a boat anchor.
But nice work fixing all the electrical and exhaust problems on your 94 Camaro.
It’s about damn time!!!🤣 I have been a fan of that year Camaro since I was a teenager! Back in high school these were what all rich kids had and can’t lie I was jealous and wanted one sooo bad!!!
Had 1 rich girl with an RS of that style. My town was poor AF I guess
@@AgtWashingtub same here, the "rich kids" where I grew up had BMW's and classic muscle cars (74 & older) and the ubiquitous pickup with shotgun in the gun rack.
Lol my school was just BMWs, Audi's, ND Benz..I had a rusty 87 Chevy c10 lol
I won a Lexus about the time my oldest kid started driving so I let him drive my Mustang Gt. Terrible parenting and it set a precedent on how nice a car the next two of my kids would get.
I had a 88 Chevy Cavalier 😂 it took busing tables for 6 months to get! But hey it’s life!
I had a 94 Firebird Formula w the Moroso intake & Edelbrock 52mm throttle body & B&M ripper shifter & white faced gauges,it only had 36 thouzand miles on it,I had it up to 150mph🤪LOVED THAT CAR👍🤓🇺🇸
So glad to see some work done on the old high school ride. If I could buy back my '98 LS1 Z28 today I would.
So glad you’re saving this car man. There are so many people who dream of getting their high school car back and restoring it to its former glory. You’re doing that and then some.
I kept one of my high school cars (1973 AMX). I had a bunch of cars in high school. I could buy a running, driving inspected car for $500 all day long back then. The only other one I wish I’d kept was my 1989 Shelby Daytona.
"(That) I did it right... I didn't do right". Some deep words that many of us have said before.
Being quite a bit older than you, in college, I had a 1980 Camaro, with the awful 305 motor, but it was black exterior, tan interior and T-tops. I’d give anything to find one in decent shape again. Thanks for helping a middle aged guy relive some memories! Love the channel.
Wheels look great, car sounds great, I'm glad you're fixing things properly with the wiring and not half-assing it like the previous owners. That looks like a 1.5-DIN opening for the radio, I had several cars with that back in the day, I hated that size!
Still have my 93 z28 I had in high school I'm getting her back on the road now loving the content
Oh hell yes, I've been waiting for this video for so long!!
I'm currently rebuilding my '93 LT1 Z28.
So excited for this video series!
This is awesome man!! Always great to see new RUclips content on these aging cars. I wish it was an LS1 only in the fact that I have an 2002 SS. I know a lot about it but it never hurts to learn or see something new. That headunit is awesome. I remember them when I was in high school. You should share any general knowledge you know about suspension, rear axle, wiring (I've been wanting to do full interior LEDS for awhile now), and whatever else might apply to general Camaro owners. Keep up the great work man.
Had a ‘95 Z28 as a HS Senior, Monterey Maroon Metallic I think was the color. Loved that car and the noise it made with the Borla exhaust.
I’ve had a 78, 84,85, 87 and two Firebirds all in the early 2000s they were so cheap then, not a fan of 4th gens Camaro's but a high school car is priceless and cool. Not many people can find their high school car. Don’t ever let it go again
Bought a 1997 SS white with orange stripes in1999 at car max for $17,000 , with 12,000 miles left on the warranty. My kid tried his best to destroy that car, but was surprisingly unsuccessful. It was fast as hell for that time and damn near Bullitt proof.
Finally. So satisfying to watch this car get the attention it needs and get it driving again. Now I will spend the next two hours looking at old camaros on Autotrader.
I just gave my 4th gen back to my brother in law. He gave it to me not running and kind of busted up rather than sending it to the scrapper. I fixed the clutch, brakes, a few sensors, some emissions stuff (thanks California) and slapped a Macco job on it for paint. It was a fun project.
im your long lost brother too,can you completely rebuild a total piece of shit spending thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of time with dirt in every crevice then just give it back to me please?
I didn’t want to sell it off to some random and have them blow it up. I knew my brother in law loved the car so I just gave it back after driving it for a while.
i've seriously been waiting for so long for you to start this! i love watching people revive and fix cars from this era, not to mention their old highschool cars! (Unfortunately my highschool car is long gone....not that it was anything special, but would still love to have it back)
Dragonstorm81 what was it? Mine was a Chevette.
@@therealboofighter my very first car was a 1986 Honda prelude 5 speed, sold it with 297,000 miles on it, then bout a 1982 Olds omega 2 door.... Looked just like a cutlass, but shorter... I miss them both!
Ive got a 93 Trans Am Im working on as a project car. My grand dad owned it and then my uncle, now I own it after it sat for 13 yrs at my uncles. I also think my Trans am is the same color as your Camaro. Good to see more LT1s working. Im glad youre working on this. Not many early model videos of the F bodies around.
My best bud had a 1988 Camaro in High School. He just bought it back last year just like you. He pulled the small engine out of it and now put a 2000 model vortec 6.0 engine in it. He could not get the hook closed, because the intake manifold was too tall, so he put a low rise intake manifold on it and can now close the hood. He has so much money into this car now, but it has sentimental value to him.
I miss my 95. I had a six speed. This is certainly a nostalgia trip for me, but I have to tell you you put the tires and wheels on wrong, they're directional, both the tires and the wheels, meaning that you need to put the tires on the correct wheel facing the correct direction and then the wheels on the correct side of the car. The wheels are supposed to be "cutting into the wind", so the swoops are supposed to "swoop" back like a kitana. Loved the video man, I hope it all goes well for you and I'm super excited about your future plans.
Very few can or want to recover our High School car. (I would love to, but cannot because it was totaled when rear ended. 1979 Buick Riviera)
It's great to see someone actually be able to have the opportunity. Happy for you! Much success!
My dad passed away in 2013 and I inherited his ‘97 Camaro and I loved it! Drove it for nearly 7 yrs before it just became a money pit. I couldn’t afford it and I didn’t think I had the skills to fix it myself. I regret selling that car every time I see a 4th gen driving around town and one day I know I’ll own another one.
All that said, I was really looking forward to this video when I saw you mentioned it on IG and I’ve gotta say, you definitely didn’t disappoint! I would really love to see this thing get built to your dream spec just so I can live my dreams of doing that to my camaro, but through you (and your wallet 🤣)
Keep up the great work man. I really love your content and I think you’re going to go big places on this platform with this kind of passion you show in every video.
New JR video and it's the CAMARO! Double score!
Your '94 Camaro Z28 roars angrily! Well done saving her from the crusher!
I knew you were in the military. That hair cut. That is the most nicest base auto hobby shop I've seen.
My oil bro had a 95 Zder back in the day and I still have my 98 FIREBIRD FORMULA LS1, Love my old girl. IT STILL runs with anything BUILT today
I remember that deck! Too expensive for me back then, but I had a decent mid-range Kenwood that could play my bootleg MP3 CD's. I had a pretty cool system back then, and watching this video makes me want another one! I’m sure my teenage daughters would love me dropping them off at school bumping some old school LOL
Hunter if you're listening, haha! I used to work in a tire center after high school. So when my kids got cars I had a manual tire changer mounted to a four by four foot piece of plywood and a cheap bubble balancer. Spin balancers are so much better.
Great channel and content. A lot of fun to watch.
I came across this video as I am getting my '94 Z28 out of 2 year storage and literally out of mothballs.
Although stored out of the weather , it's amazing how quickly things go south when they aren't driven.
I'm looking forward to see how your project turns out. Keep up the great work👍👍.
Yea brakes lock up, moisture in the fluid kills everything. Moisture gets everywhere period. Injectors stick, fuel tank turns to shit it's crazy. I recently went thru it with a 96 c1500 regular cab short bed 2wd 5.7 with 5spd. Sat for 10 years. Good luck man!
20:08 Falling Squares works for me. Heck of a deal for $25. JR, you really DO go and are a blast to watch. The way you attack whatever needs to be done is amazing AF and inspiring. Your wiring and computer chops alone are very impressive. IDK, I think there's another Wizard in town... Glad to hear some RR parts came in. Can't wait to see that Rolls Smoke!
This is still my favorite generation Camaro!
As a TrailBlazer owner ('07 LS 4.2), I love seeing that TBSS. It makes me so happy that he uses it as a tow rig.
It sounds to good to pull the running gear. Keep it original I love that sound
Great video. I hope we get to see that cars and coffee video. Looks like 2021 for that R8 🤣🤣
Glad to see you working on the Z28!
That ZR-1 motor that just came out of the Corvette on Demo Garage would be a unique swap. I don't think he plans to do anything with it. Might be a cool collaboration also.
Nice work! I have a modded 95 Z28 Camaro. Lots of UMI stuff on the car. Just added their front and rear sway bar kit.
"I'm always excited"- Zach, in monotone voice
"Your skills are required for a job" -Zach-o-tron to JR, probably
Loving this car! Seeing you rebuilding yours makes me want to get my high school car back up so bad!
Fifteen years later I've still got my first car, long live the Mk2 Capri!
Adam Leask you cant kill an old donk box! Wish I still had mine!
Cool car!!!
I’ve got a 94 Z28 as well. Nothing wrong with the gen 2 lt1. They’ve come a long way as far as mods go.
I’d say keep the car period correct like you’re doing with the head unit and the little things.
Hell throw an old LT4 hot cam in it and some headers!
so awesome. i just picked up my second 1994 firebird. 1st one i had right after high school. ex wreaked 2 months later.. 15 years later i finally have another one.. this one is alotttttt more of a project though... really love your vid..
I took my driving test in a 96 Z28 vert, love these cars.
Dude getting the chance to have your high school car and the resources to do all the things you wanted to do to that car must be like a dream come true. Enjoy the process. Could you please drop the model of that Kenwood head unit, I'd put that in my car right now!!!!!
I am so glad the head unit works. That was awesome with the monster trucks
Had 1 of these babies. Bored out to 355, full bolt ons, forged, magnaflow exhaust.
Now I miss my z28. Was absolutely mint when I sold it a couple years ago. Dark green with tan leather interior. Cat back Flowmaster exhaust and cold air intake etc.
Great way to handle the work on this car and not get bogged down. A day on it every few months and it will in good shape soon! I think it would be cool to continue to grab era correct parts that are cheap now, keep the original motor and do cam, headers, cat, ECU tune. That would be inexpensive and easy, comparatively, and still a lot of fun to drive.
Have a 1970 Mustang sports roof 351C bought in 1972. All original, including the radio. Almost sold it once, but didn't, thank you very much.
Those tires are directional did you put them facing the right direction? they are made to eject the water out of the tread in one direction.
They are, and I did 🍻
Fun fact for techs and whatnot. Those stickers that come on the new rubber, pull it off before balencing tire, those stickers can add .5-1oz of weight, sometimes, possibly making a perfectly balenced tire, out of balence, when the sticker rubs away.
This video was so pleasant to watch man, thank you. Love seeing another Fbody back on the road.
So cool that that radio came to life. You seemed so bummed. Fun project.
I bought a 1994 Firebird when it was 2 years old and drove it for 15 years and over 200k miles! Nursed it along as far as I could and was about to fix it up really nice before discovering the rear underbody was too rusted to realistically save and make safe. I see your clearcoat is as bad as mine was!
You are awesome JR. I’m glad everything is working out with your high school ride.
I got a 1986 Z-278 Camaro Glad you are saving it!
Restoring your high school car!!! I wish I could find my 2 tone red 4x4 91 s10! Nice video jr !
Love this project, I had a 96 Z28, had so much work into it. Regret getting rid of it.
Love these kind of projects on normal cars. It is nice to learn something I can actually use.
I love that you solder and shrink wrap your connections👍, I hate butt connectors. Very cool deck! I remember driving to high school in my ‘97 Sunfire with my cheapie Jensen deck making Matchbox 20 skip on every bump...😂
Surprisingly the hooker exhaust wasn't all that popular, I thought it sounded good and wasn't expensive. Had a kenwood in mine, probably a couple models below that one and had the BMR LCA too. Brings back memories.
First car in high school was an MGB-GT, hardtop and hatchback from 1972. Lived in the rainforest of B.C and any car with no roof or a hole in the roof was undesirable. In that regard, keeping the rain out was a sucess, while in its favourite place...dead on the side of the road.
I had that same hooker cat back with jet hot coated hooker long tubes. Great setup went 13.07@108 with it. LT1's are still good motors. Still have my high school Camaro
Those BFG tires are noisy and not great. Many better options for the money in my opinion.
JRs trip down memory lane. Nice
Very cool car and I'm glad you are getting her back to health! Love those headunits too. I had quite a few of the Pioneer versions with the OEL displays- so cool. They have gone boring now
Keep it up, it's a labor of love. You'll need center caps after all of the work and money you put in those wheels.
The Goodyear Eagles on my Mustang have the same feature of a slightly offset lip to protect your rims. Unfortunately, I got them after a curbed I rim on a stone curb while parallel parking in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. 😤
I'm more stoked about this Camaro revival than any other project!!
In 2005 I treated myself to a $250 Pioneer MP3 capable head unit from Circuit City. So you could do MP3 CDs and have like 120 songs on a single disc. It also had the NBA Street Hologram graphics. Just like all my CD players, eventually it started skipping after you hit bumps, but I found another one for $30 on ebay brand new. It was crazy some person bought one and kept it in their closet for 13 years. Same exact model and everything.
My highschool Z28 was an 1984 with the 5.0. I thought the ones that came out in the 90's were awesome, but now I would rather have an older '84.
Sounds like mine an 83 z28. Id love to have that back today
I am a fan of Pirelli tires, the P4 for the longest life or the Scorpion Verde for a little more grip for an all season tire. I am waiting for the April issue of Consumer Reports magazine at a library for their newest research for tire brands.
Can’t wait for the 6th gen swap over, I’ve been thinking about doing something similar but there’s just not a lot out there on it. I have the same year Camaro but a v6 model and if you end up doing it I’ll be following along bro! Keep up the good work
I feel your pain with that wiring...
Not once have I bought an old second hand car and had all the stereo wiring not completely hacked about, half a million crimp connectors on crimp connectors, eight miles of unnecessary wiring... Just WTF is wrong with people?! 😂🤦
Love it that you're into the awesome period correct head unit era - I do exactly the same with my fleet! 😁
Definitely following this. I have a 94’ 25th anniversary TA that was my first car, and I want to swap a 6th gen+ Camaro drive train and everything in.
The best stereo I got was Kenwood excelon x998 fell in love with that unit
I was always a huge fan of the SLP Loudmouth on the LT1. It was a little quieter, but damn that thing sounded GOOD!
I’m happy with my 2.5” exhaust, gutted cat and a cherry bomb on mine. Certainly flows better then the stock style (that stock rear muffler design is crap for flow).
I love your Camaro. I’m glad you’re fixing it up. I wish I had want to fix up on these days. I I had a bunch of them in my life. My first carvers are 69 second one was a 70s and I have the went back to 69 went back to 85 to 8696 after my accident I went back to work and I boughtcause I lived in Florida at the time I wanted to about an so I stole it and took it with me too close to the river and that got lunch so sooner or later I’m gonna get another one. I just can’t work anymore because I might ride in the back and I just can’t do it that’s a hard thing when I can’t.
I enjoyed this way more than expected.... I think I would keep with the old school theme and built that old LT1 and keep it original. Maybe Turbo it or something you would have done back in the day
I had a 94 Z28 in that exact color. It was a fun car. Drove it over 100k miles.
I had a 94 V6 in that color. Made it to 135,000 miles before it started burning coolant real bad (constant white smoke out the tail pipe). I wasn’t to upset. I paid $550 for it and I had bought my 93 Z28 a few months prior. Swapped as many parts from the 94 to the 93 that were messed up on the 93 and junked the V6. 13 years later and my z28 still has the knobs and hood from my old V6.
I love what hung videos like this while restoring mine while I’m in highschool
Don't see much anymore! Keep the lt1 going great job!🏁
IMHO that is the best post 70's Camaro body style! They didn't have fancy traction control or electronic stability control crap. Just a big V8 and a decent factory exhaust. With a 6 speed it is perfect! FWIW that laser engraved LT1 plate is at least 6 horsepower!
Wouldn't the rear speakers be running off the factory harness and the one you attached to the 12ga wire? So wouldn't that be ok?
I wish I still had my hs truck. Was a 96 f150 with the straight six. Beast of a truck for a 6cyl. I miss it.
As a car guy and audiophile, I respect your attention to detail.
1.6 rockers, with 85mm maf from ls1 silverado makes a big difference. did it to my 94 TA
Nice video, all I have to do is find my high school car common 1971 Mercury Capri. The next thing you should do is take care of all the wiring under the hood that looks like it's about to catch fire.
I had a 94 Z28 with the 6 spd manual in the dark green metallic color. That was a fun car. Traded it in for a 98 SS with a 6 spd.
Imma b real, the LT1s are fucking sick. Impala SS and TA had them and man were those cars fun to drive. Never been inside a Camaro with an LT1 though, but I’d imagine they’re identical to the Trans Am I’ve been in.
Good to see the Camaro getting some love.
This video makes me very happy. I have a 95 Z28 that I'm currently getting real greasy with :)
I swear- 4th gens never get any love.
