I've never been a baseball person but Ohtani & the craze has captured my attention. That alone is testament to his true value proposition bringing in brand new fan potential, viewership, merchandise, etc.
There are still some obtuse people saying that Ohtani is overrated and overpayed while the Dodgers and MLB are raking in hundreds of millions of dollars while paying him $2 million a year. Bless their hearts.
lol dodgers was the best team with the most win with a horrible inconsistent pitcher . The Ohtani and company was taking the wins . Ohtani is underpaid haaga
I live in Japan for the last 3 years. Recently, whenever I go out I am playing a game “how much time will pass before I see a picture of Ohtani”. The best result I had so far was 1 minute 😂 He’s literally everywhere
@@Monte0248 Let me tell you as a Japanese woman, the people at my part-time job, prob like 10-15 people, were sitting right in front of the TV the whole Dodgers vs. Padres game. It was the 5th one, and they were half yelling and making comments about Darvish’s pitching saying he’s still got it, let alone literally everything about Ohtani. That was NOT a workplace lol. Yes, their games are usually in the morning for us, so lots of people find out about the results and how Ohtani played on Twitter or YT, but the impact he holds is something else, to say the least. He’s got the middle aged man I know who never watches any sports talk about how ass a certain ball umpire is. In conclusion, saying he’s a national hero is a lowkey understatement. His online nickname is ‘the protagonist’ I’m not even joking.

I purchased mlb tv this year so I could watch dodgers games. Also bought ohtani baseball cards from topps for the first time since i was like 6 y/o. But spent a lot more money gambling on dodger games cuz of ohtani lol
Plus Ohtani is living his dream. His number one team to play for when he was a kid was to be a LA Dodger, his dream came true plus he’s so hard working and a very kind and considerate person. Unlike other major league or professional player he doesn’t flaunt his wealth but even shares it with the community. The only torn in his history is his translator that stole millions from him gambling after he trusted him being a friend. What a screwball he was and getting paid over half million a year as a translator 😮
There's also the direct economic impact for the Dodgers due to Ohtani's contract. The accrued interest they'll earn on the $44 million/yr they're putting in escrow will earn them tens of millions by the time they're done paying him.
That specimen of a man is worth more than a billion easily. If the Dodgers continue to win they can make that money back in a few years or less. The dude is pride of Japan and all of Asia.
What's even more amazing is that he didn't even leave LA and this is still happening. This is what separates great organizations from, well, the Angels.
But you got to thanks the angel to be the only team that sign to be a two way..and he didnt have a break out season til 2021..in that aspect give the dodger a chance to sign him..so thankx to the angel
Great breakdown that's why people don't understand, they'll make back their 700M in one year, the amount of eye balls from people who didn't watch baseball before, the advertising revenue all the ancillary benefits of having Ohtani, uplifting his teammates inspiring fans, its hard to quantify these things but the lineups for his bobble head alone should tell you, many of them were probably for resale but it's almost like the fact they paid him a record amount was necessary because of the press it generated, it's like if a polo shirt cost $5 no one would care, but if you charge $500 for it then everyone will want it more, quite counter intuitive. Everything Ohtani does he does for the team but this 50/50 record, in a way was necessary because it now offers a clear definable metric and justification of his record salary (underpaid imho), should the Dodgers not do well in the playoffs well they can still say Ohtani had a successful season despite not pitching because he has set a new benchmark with the 50/50 club.
And this is not just a short term payoff for the Dodgers. This is a long term win. Shit this is a win for the franchise that’s going to carry over at least a decade after Ohtani retires. During these years the legend of Ohtani in Japan is going to grow. The majority of Japan is going to be Dodger territory. They will eclipse all other teams, even the Yankees. Japanese prospects will aspire to sign with the Dodgers. So not only are they going to kill it financially, but the Dodgers will have a monopoly on the better talent coming out of Japan.
@@leonkincoln-dp8vs ya that's a valid point. All the potential investments and interest he could've made by not having the funds for 10 years. If he can win a championship then his endorsements deals would go way up and he'll make over the 100M he does now so he'll be fine.
The LAA had similar numbers in proportion? I'd love to watch a video with the economic effect of Messi on Miami Vs Ohtani in LAD. Two incredible athletes that move millions everywhere
He is like Caitlin Clark of NCAA and WNBA. I followed Shohei and Dodgers upon discovery due to YT random feed. He is exciting to watch. While watching him, I started to discover his teammates like Hernadez and MVP Freddie. 🏆🤩
Ohtani was a household name in Japan before he ever got to America. Thanks to my Japanese girlfriend I found out about him when we started watching him at Angels games in 2018. Saw him 5 times in his last season there, including pitching a 10 strikeouts game while hitting 2 home runs. That was awesome to be there.
Dodgers hit a gold mine with Ohtani. Ohtani as well can take advantage of his popularity. He should strike while the iron is hot. He should hire Snoop’s agent. If he can sell Snoop, he can sell Ohtani for 20x his current value.
Now they won, and are going to travel to Japan as rockstars.. Did you notice that Stan Kasten made it a point to thank the 4 countries that baseball fans (and talent) grow up in? Dominican Republic, Mexico, Korea, and Japan. Dodgers are going for generational long term fans abroad.
Here’s the shocking truth: they don’t need to win a single World Series _game_ for the investment in Ohtani & Yamamoto to pay off. Sure, it’d be nice, but it’s just gravy. That’s because this was an investment in the value of the franchise, not in winning World Series trophies. The owners of the Dodgers have already *doubled* the value of the franchise (per Forbes estimate) in the 11 years since they bought it. And that was before Ohtani. Some day, some of the Dodgers owners will want to sell all or some substantial portion of their share. Now imagine a group of fabulously wealthy Japanese investors. How much would they be willing to pay? That’s why Ohtani, Yamamoto, and any other huge Japanese stars are great investments for ownership. If they also win some championships, hey, great, but that’s not the driving calculation.
The man has nothing left to accomplish except maybe a Cy Young. The Dodgers economic insight is great. Ohtani also brought Yoshida with him that was basically a part of the deal. Ohtani is a piggy bank for the Dodgers.
Thanks for telling us, Ohtani fans in the world. Please tell more of how Russian people got to know Ohtani. Is it only a very small portion of Russians knowing him, or is it more nationwide?
I was thinking the same. Of course, the WNBA has a lot of jealous, catty women who don't see a golden goose in front of their overly makeup-laden faces.
About a week ago, there was a Japanese news clip showing a Japan Airlines plane with OHTANI livery. You get the picture.
