Velvia 50 is an incredible film if you know how to use it. And importantly where and when to use it. Exposure is important and knowing the limits of exposure latitude is critical.

I find it works for mostly what I shoot it with, which is mainly landscapes.

I shot it in 4x5 back in the 90's and did not care for it. It had a pinky/purple cast in the high lights. I'll have to dig those images up. Also, I thought this film was no longer available. I know the US banned (not banned in Canada as far as I know) it due to traces of some chemical, and last year, Fujifilm suspended the manufacture of 35 and 120 for its domestic market due to shortage of raw materials. No clue if they restarted its manufacture, though...

They discontinued the 4x5 stock of the 50 speed film in the last 2 years. They still make the 35mm and 120. The 100 speed Velvia was banned in the USA because of its chemical make up. This does not apply to the 50 speed version. Yes the 50 speed was halted in production in the last year due to lack of ingredients to make the product. Production of the 50 speed film recently resumed, but in limited quantities. It was for sale at B&H not long ago until it sold out again. As for the highlights you mention, I did not notice this issue on my shots. It may be there, but I never seen this myself. I do know it tends to go purple in sunsets for example.

US banned Velvia 100 but not Velvia 50. Also I recently got fresh Velvia 50 in 120 format in Canada. Dated Mid 2025.

You know those great Canon colors you always hear about? This is like the opposite of that. Colors look weird to me.

Film will always give a different rendition of color, especially a film like this. As for Canon colors, Canon is good, but I tend to like Fuji digital coloring better. I always found Canon skin tones a little off and a bit too much yellow. Velvia isn't for all tastes, but I grew up liking the film look. It's a very saturated film stock.

Velvia is best used in very colorful scenes. And exposure has to be very precise. If you are not diligent then yes the colors will not be as good as this film can deliver.
