    It's really a shame that our options for color reversal are so limited. I shoot almost exclusively color reversal (mostly Ektachrome, but recently shot Velvia 50) film with the purpose of projecting. Such a great way to see your images blown up to a huge size without dealing with the hassle and cost of printing.

    My family use to shoot everything on slide film, We have hundreds if not thousands of slides. Most of the slides date from the early 1960s through the late 80s. I am experimenting with film again and have always loved slide film. The amazing thing with slides is the presentations, the setting up of the noisy projector, the clunky screen, the focus of the watchers on the image on said screen and the shared experience of seeing the past. Very powerful and at times emotional. I hope slide film never dies. Thanks for covering this subject.

    100% agree on cross-processing. It's one of those things that falls into the category of "just because you can doesn't mean you should."

      I've seen some great results from xpro but I feel like those are the exception and most of the time it doesn't work that well. Plus it's a nightmare when you do your own scanning. After a few disappointing rolls I pretty much gave up on the idea.

      With it's exaggerated grain and weird colours it's great for hammering into viewers' heads: "this is analogue!". Also useful for conveying a message of roughness or grittiness. It's just another tool in your toolbox... and just like a big hammer, you won't use it for precision modelling.

    Always noticed “color negative” and “color reversible” but never knew the actual depth and difference behind both. I’ve always seen Velvia at so many shops and as a Fuji lover never tried it, that changed today man! thanks Analog!

    I shot Velvia 50 for the first time last week. I find it to be a very intense and harsh film with high contrast and deep shadows and highlights. I was shhoting beaches and the sea and got very good looking overly saturated results. Now that you mentioned velvia 100 is more neutral, I might go with that. Since I live in Turkey, it’s very easy for me to get Fuji stuff for cheap. Right now, the cheapest film in Turkey is fresh Pro 400H.

    Here's why Velvia is so sharp. Look at the MTF Curve graph on the datasheet at 5:01. The film provides greater than 100% response from 5 to 15 cycles/mm. That's not a misprint. What this means is that the film intrinsically highlight edges. The film effectively does an unsharp mask sharpening on itself.
    Look for the datasheet for Kodak Gold. It exhibits the same characteristic. However, Gold actually resolves significantly more detail than Velvia; look at where MTF30 terminates for both films. MTF30 is the traditional resolution extermination threshold. Nothing much below this is visible.
    With practically only five stops of dynamic range, specific tendency to amplify saturation to 11, it's a special situations film. On the few occasions I had this in the film back, it literally took three months to finish off a roll.

    Noah, thank you for what you do. Because of a combination of Ben Fraternale of In an Instant and ofc you I decided to get into my first polaroid format, pack film, so I did. I had some issues...the dark tab ripped so my dad and I had to pull it out and load the pack in darkness which we have no experience doing. The first two shots came out fully black. After talking to a photographer about it online, I realized it needed a particular battery so I ordered one. Shot two shots today at my soon to be college and they came out really beautiful, super cool experience that I'm very thankful to y'all for.

      They aren't kodak, it's gonna take a while. Let them do it before you say it's nonsense.
      New slide film had been off of their agenda for a few years before the start of 2021. They really only promised it in the Kickstarter and for a few months after they were funded. Their supply issues have been slowly resolving themselves and things are really looking up for them so don't be so nihilistic about it.

    I love Slide film - I’ve technically tried both Ektachrome and Provia, though haven’t developed Provia yet. Ektachrome looks beautiful in the day AND at night with it’s 10 seconds before reciprocity kicks in. Shoot slide film; even if rarely!

      Agreed! I only shoot slide for color now. I’m not down with the whole portra look most people are going for anymore. Personally my favorite film is Provia. Provia’s reciprocity is in the minuets range. I think you’ll really dig the Provia.

      @@asmahism I’m tempted to buy another roll solely to test at night… I also reallllly want some more Ektachrome for night. I shot it on a foggy night last year and was blown away - all shots done under 10 seconds (which was tricky with the lenses I had - 2 of which are very soft and sharpness cuts off at f/5.6…)

Definitely not expecting anything even close to real Kodachrome correctly-processed results. Doesn't it produce really "interesting" B&W negatives if cross-processed under C-41? Cheers!!!

    Doesn't Rollei make slide film?

    • @AnalogResurgence
      @AnalogResurgence  2 года назад +1

      A few years ago Rollei put out Vario Chrome, which was a limited edition slide film that was likely expired Agfa slide film (from back when Agfa made Agfachrome until the earlier 2000's). They currently have a film called Crossbird, which is originally a slide film that's marketed as being for cross-processing. It's also likely old Agfachrome film so none of their stuff is like freshly produced, quality made reversal film like Kodak and Fuji are still doing.

    • @sednoid
      @sednoid 2 года назад

      @@AnalogResurgence The Crossbird is a bit of a mystery. They gave it new packaging not long ago but it's usually sold out without any mention of discontinuation - possibly converted from old stock in very limited batches but you kinda never know if there's gonna be another or not. The original emulsion is most likely Agfa Aviphot Chrome - it was discontinued only a few years ago so even if it's old stock, it sure would be fresher than the old Agfachromes made in the 2000s.
      I had one roll developed in E6 so far and the slides came out looking like... cross-processed. Lots of contrast and tendency for greenish/yellowish colour shifts. Very weird.
      They also had a similar film called CR 200 a few years ago which was supposedly the same emulsion but actually marketed as a slide film.
