I’m an Indian American who immigrated. Weekend to weekend life, personality part and coping strategies and going to work whether you feel like it or not is bang on. The monotonous robotic lifestyle is also very true. To each its own, your life will be what you make out of it. My husband and I love to travel and explore iso it works out really well. Now our son is also the same, we travel often and light.
Life is very tough in America, however, with definitely a better reward for the middle-class.
India is the best for the rich and wealthy. America is the best in the world for a middle class person.

There are pros and cons of both, I have friends in India, making over 70LPA, in addition to that side businesses and having a comfortable life, enjoy all Indian festivals, authentic Indian food whenever they want, relatives around, family and friend gatherings, night lives...
And an average American hardly makes 50K a year, a good graduate degree cost way more in America (over 70K) than India, and Americans who doesn't have support of parents, spend lives paying student loans(with such degrees the starting salary is often around 100K, and salaries in America doesn't grow like in India).
Individual stories doesn't represent entire population. Ask an average American, they shall be more than happy to give up their citizenship.

This is one of the most genuine video reviews on living in the US as NRIs. Thanks for not garnishing facts, and telling people what they want to hear. US is truly a great Country if you have a lot of ambition to grow in your profession and make money etc. but if you are more inclined to cultural, political, social or religious aspects of Indian society then living in today's India would be great. Also, people's choices and likings change depending on their individual circumstances, stages they are in.

U.S. is not for the weak. U.S. is not for people, who depend on a housemaid, or a driver or a parent to cook for them. U.S. makes you tough and you start to manage things wisely. I moved to U.S. in 2002 and believe me I was a typical Delhi's momma boy, infamous in my entire family for being no. 1 kaamchor and Aalsi 😄. But I changed and learned to do things on my own. Almost everything is automated here, be it a dishwasher, garbage or paying bills. So don't listen to someone, who couldn't make it here because U.S. didn't roll out a red carpet for them and serve them a Green card on a silver platter. This country has amazing opportunities and is great for someone who loves to travel. Also, the first few years are not pleasant due to culture shock and missing family back home, but it all changes if you do it right. Again, don't come to U.S. if you are weak.

The dumb do not automatically become wise after landing, the poorly educated do not automatically become educated after crossing over from Mexico, the clinically depressed don’t automatically become not depressed without treatment, etc. But, those with fire in their bellies can make it big here. You don’t have to be extremely educated and bright. Someone who is highly motivated with average intelligence can also make it big. But, the U.S. only allows highly qualified people to enter the U.S. legally. A lot more people could make it big here if they were allowed to come. But, that is NOT the criteria any country can use to allow immigration. Legal immigration can only be based on academic and other relevant credentials such as the financial capacity to invest.

Most of the things described applies to working in Bangalore 😅
    1. Places are far off
    2. No friends
    3. Cant meet anyone on weekdays
    4. Cant afford rent alone
    5. Huge disparity in income
    6. No limit to earning capacity if your start up is successful
    7. Planning a journey to hometown is a task
    8. Ppl in hometown are jealous of your city lifestyle while you envy theirs
    9. Shit scared of losing the job you hate, but it pays your bills
    10. Visa or consulate problems? Try getting a house on rent here or documentation from a local govt office
    11. All news you get is from online, you hate your country and place you live with lawlessness, incidents of road rage etc.
    12. Culture and traditions? Man if I had time for that!
Every place has its on problem and each one deals with it differently. Been to the US and the middle east, I can say that these problems described can apply to working anywhere away from home and not only to the US.

What dark reality? The post is totally misleading. A lot depends on the visa status and qualifications of the individuals. The two are mostly related because only qualified people are admitted. A small minority get in through the “lottery system” which is on the chopping block as it should be. A small number also sneak in illegally. It is not a good idea for the US to admit unqualified people. Now, the vast majority of Indians are here in the US legally and they are highly qualified. True, there are no guaranteed jobs for life anywhere in the world. In the U.S., when someone gets laid off, there are unemployment benefits to tide over people to the next job. The unemployment rate is low. Salaries are good. The U.S. per capita income is over $80,000 per year-the highest among major developed countries. And, Indians have the highest average income among all groups in the country. These are facts based on data. So, such posts are fake “news” and extremely misleading.
That said, getting into the U.S. on a valid visa based on qualifications is NOT easy. That is the dark reality.

Before going to any country, read a lot about your destination, try to understand the culture, and above all, ADAPT the best way you can. Integrate while still holding on to your originality. Here is an Indian born and graduated in India NRI perspective living in Canada since last 20 years
    1. You need to have strong mindset (to be yourself) when you live in one of the developed nations. So your mental health should be very strong. US/Can is not for emotional mindset folks who take failure by heart.
    2. Self sustenance: You need basic of these skills (not advanced): driving, cooking, sewing and dish-washing.
    3. There are professional and relationship challenges: Your job could be lost, if you got a gori or desi in relationship (or married) she may also break-up. So you need to strong enough to handle this. This looks light but if you are born in India it takes a lot of mental and emotional effort
    4. Goals: Its better to set goals be it educational or financial or health else the above can shake your foundation
    5. People/Colleagues are not for you: Just like in India your friends can come for you be it any lafda or for quick bite, here everybody acts like a professional CEO so don’t expect that kind of relationship here. They only live for weekend and that too with an appointment type. You need to have thick skin in this game as well

Nobody is wrong, it depends on what an individual prioritizes.
    I. Financial: If you own/inherit enough assets in India there's no point of moving overseas. If no, then it genuinely makes sense because of higher currency value.
II. Quality of Life: In terms of infrastructure, purchasing power, pollution, fewer and civilized population, traffic, cleanliness, law and order, overseas is better, although they are deteriorating but still way ahead of us. On the otherhand, India has a lot of convenience to offer too, such as better doctors/diagnosis, househelp, good Indian food, local wholesale markets.
III. Social life: Western society is individualistic, if you are okay with limited interactions its good for you. But India has family, friends, festivals, buzzing life, its pretty vibrant all the time.
IV. Work-life: Overseas is better anyday, work places are more considerate, empathetic, productive. Unfortunately, India still follows the industrial revolution work culture to a great extent.
There are several more aspects, I mentioned the ones that matter to me, I might have missed some too.

Granted with its own set of challenges. I simply love the US. The geography, no judgmental society, economic mobility, vibrancy of atmosphere etc. You can design the life you want for yourself. That takes an effort though! Most people who move out of India have already established their likes, dislikes and a personality. That leaves a hole in their 'ideal life' they wish for themselves since the idealization was built while they were growing up in a different society! I spend a few months in India as we have a back-office there. Lucky for me, I get best of both countries. I love many aspects of India as well. It has its own pro's and con's. But there is no *Dark Reality* per se! Life is simply what you make out of it (anywhere in the world). As for me: I feel America is the greatest country in the world. Land of the free, Home of the brave!!

  • @PatientlyHonest

I am an OCI. I have also moved back to India. I have kept bank and brokerage accounts in the USA. I am 55 now and I have with IT background butI have not worked here after I moved back. I don't work in India but pay taxes in India and US on my earnings from stock investments in the US. If you live meaningful life( I meant non showy, not fancy, no chauffeur driven car etc) then you will enjoy India.
Those who want to save on taxes in India, my suggestion is to take retirement visa in Thailand or Dubai. These places are close to India with India like weather. Stay 185 days to fulfill NRI status requirement so that you dont have to pay any tax in India or Dubai or Thailand on your USA earnings.

    • @mannysubramanian8393

But staying in Dubai or Thailand is more expensive than India (plus the cost of retirement visa). One can get similar amenities (clean neighborhood, metro, malls, hospitals, food etc) say in Bangalore or Delhi, at a lower cost. Not sure how much tax a typical retired OCI pays in India, but for most retirees I am guessing it may be only a fraction of the tax paid in the USA (but correct me if I am wrong).
Since the US income is already taxed there, the Indian resident can take credit for the US tax (double taxation avoidance treaty). Paying some tax to India is also a give back to the country for its development. After all education for many of us was subsidized by the Indian Govt. (especially the IITs, NITs,Govt. medical colleges etc.).

    • @PatientlyHonest
      @PatientlyHonest 2 дня назад

@mannysubramanian8393. Thailand visa and stay is not at all expensive. You need leas than 25 lakhs indian rupees in a bank account to get a retirement visa. Thailand is a good option for folks who make less money; whereas Dubai you need around 2.5 cr in the bank.
You pay hugh amount of taxes in India. DTAA is not beneficial if your main source of income is from US Stock investment. For married couples long term capital gains + dividend is tax free upto 96K USD( half the number for Singles) . Standard deduction is 29K USD for married couple for current financial year. 0 tax paid n USA so no DTAA benifits 8n this case. If OCI is living in India then every single dime earned abroad is taxable in India and should be reported on tax returns. Go figure how much tax one would have to pay on this much amount in India. The thing is tax calculation on the foreign income is very complex in India. Another headache is Financial year is different in both the countries. If that is not enough there are 12 exchange rate to calculate earnings from abroad for 12 months separately. Another nonsense thing is we are also required to pay TDS on the foreign income. Not to mention we have to do every calculation manually. It is not like you get numbers from a statement from Zerodha app and give it to your CA.
Mall, Metro, sky risers etc are not deciding factors for 50+ old folks like me. I don't think folks move to India for materialistic lifestyle.

I actually feel sorry for NRIs today who are going thru this. You need to ask yourself, is America really worth all this stress? Can’t I have a good life in India without worrying if the country I’m staying in really wants me? Who or what am I struggling and going through all this stress and isolation for?
If my parents had never come to America, and knowing what I know now about America (I know this actually isn’t possible), I would stay in India. America just isn’t worth it at all. My biggest problem in America has always been, without question or doubt, RACISM.
Considering things in India are getting much better, I really don’t think immigrating anywhere is worth it. You now have my opinion on this issue. But, you will need to make that personal decision about leaving India and trying to make in another country.

Tere Maharashtra mein bhi marathi log non marathi logo ko na pasand karte hain. Indians mein tribalism bahut zyada hai india ke comparison foreigners zyada accepting hote hain. Tere US mein bhi marathi dost hi honge zydatar.

I'm a marathi, I don't hate anyone. I just want people to follow rule of law.

This is the account of a pampered privileged upper caste indian who is used to royalty in India.
Try to have some empathy for the lower caste people in India. Even after you face these experiences of being other side power in the US , when you are in India, you are back to business in enjoying the power and you are totally unaware and unempathetic of others in india who go through worse daily and you never do anything about changing it . This is the irony. This is why India doesn't improve.

Poor people are there in every caste.. And reservations are taking care of many castes.... So called Upper caste do not get reservation and do not get privileges from politicians

@digitalmediaacademy2066 I agree to your point partially. But you have no idea how a poor upper caste is so much privileged vs a middle class lower caste. You will undertake later in life.
