The only laptops I have are from 2003 and 2009. Former came with XP (still runs XP), latter came with Vista (and is rocking a 2.1 GHz Celeron with Intel GMA graphics...), but now runs Windows 7.
Not gotten anything newer, as laptops are expensive...
I mostly do pretty much everything on a desktop PC (Currently: Ryzen 2700X with 48GB of RAM, and a (second hand) GeForce GTX 980), running Windows 10.
My PC is near constantly running multiple Verilog simulations in parallel (so tends to average ~ 60-80% CPU pretty much all the time), though much of the RAM tends to be eaten up by Firefox and similar.
Don't usually do all that many GPU intensive tasks though. Had experimented with GPU based video upsampling tools though (NN/AI based), but they were painfully slow and still not super impressive (several orders of magnitude slower than tricubic interpolation, not much difference in quality; as upsampling low-quality videos off the internet still mostly just resulted in slightly bigger videos with sharper edges and some amount of ringing artifacts; often emphasizing the noise and blocking artifacts rather than filtering them out; ...). Granted though, potentially fast+good video upsampling is a non-trivial problem. Also there tools made my PC basically unusable when they were running (and would take multiple hours for a 3 minute video, ...).

    How rich are your parents.

Being at least a little rich is a prerequisite for doing any PhDs. You're just out of the job market for so long.

@@realfangplays Also one needs to be kinda rich to have much hope of being able to get into a university in the first place (as opposed to "maybe community college" but otherwise expected to go straight from high-school into "having a job").

Plus if you do a PhD, it's probably funded, so you probably can spend some money on a laptop (even one so expensive).
