Westerners did not flee Shanghai due to the lack of economic opportunity. They fled Shanghai after experiencing the terror of a totalitarian government during the three years of lock-down and hysteria. Even after the lock-down was relaxed the PRC government continued to close the doors to the country with numerous new anti-foreigner laws. Westerners left the PRC out of concern for their own personal safety.

I had a great time in China, my city was Ningbo. People weren't especially rude, it was just like NY where you had to push for what you wanted. That being said, I heard stories and the truth is: Nonmatter what, you will never be treated like Chinese if you aren't (even if you speak their language, marry, and get citizenship. And 2, if you are a foreigner running a business in China your clock is ticking. Sooner or later a local will want your business, and the CCP will do everything in their power to force you out.
@jies2811 Which part? I know a French man who studied Chinese for 12 years in Beijing married and git citizenship, had traveled all over the country and he was still called a foreigner. You need mental help if you think NY isnt rude and nasty. Communism is a mental disorder so it makes sense. What part of Communists have TOTAL POWER don't you understand? That is WHY they are Communists, POWER.
I've traveled over quite a bit of China over the years, including Beijing and Shanghai, among many others, large and small. I was sometimes the object of curiosity and I rarely felt like people were rude BECAUSE I was a foreigner. I also have friends there. Last time I visited was 2017. I always enjoyed the trips, but by 2017 you could see this coming. I don't feel like it's really safe to go now. Certainly, it is not a welcoming place anymore. Life is short. I will travel to other places where I'm not treated like The Enemy.
Yes. The Chinese are, in general, very rude; not only to foreigners, but also to anyone in their own country, especially if they are of a lower status. They endear themselves to no one, not even their own kind.

Sad to see. It was quite an impressive place when I was there for two weeks several years ago. The botched Covid experience followed by crackdowns on businesses and Taiwan Saber rattling has killed the goose that laid the golden egg. Where is Jack? Just accepted a position in Vietnam and I move there next week. I am looking forward to helping them become great :) All China has left are the losers of the West that have no options elsewhere. You can keep 'em, China. We don't want those slugs elsewhere. They add nothing.
'The botched Covid experience' What are you talking about ? Do you think that the US did better ? Per worldometers, the US has 3,501 covid deaths per 1 million population. Scaled by population, China would have had 4.9 million deaths. No one is arguing that happened. Why didn't it ? Because China eliminated or suppressed all the variants up to including Delta. Its population only had to deal with Omicron. You can legitimately claim that China should have opened up 5 ~ 12 months earlier. You can legitimately criticise Xi and the CCP for any number of things. But FFS quit it with the revisionist history on China's overall covid response.
The East Asian habit of physically segregating non East Asians and calling them foreigners (which is common in China, South Korea, and to some extent Taiwan and of course japan) is a deterrent especially when good times end. And note that the lady in the hat is only missing “foreigners” because their absence is costing her money. The habit of seeing westerners as utilities is another reason why they split.
It's funny how in most Western cities, you're not suddenly seeing less Chinese. They're here permanently, and would be insulted to be called 'foreigners'. They're.......ahem........ Chinese American or Chinese Australian.........or just 'Australian'. It's funny how the rules are different for them.

I can testify to the loss of foreigners in Shanghai. I’ve been here since 2010 and have seen the ebbs and flows. These days there is a feeling that the best years have passed. I miss the old SH.
The main problem is the lockdowns backfired on China. It introduced the world to remote work and virtual meetings. So people who had moved to China in order to do work, are now able to go back to the USA and just use online meetings or remote work.
I'm not so sure. There are many Chinatowns and Little Tokyos around the world. Does it say the same thing as Foreigner Street? The difference is in naming the specific culture. If more 'foreigners' moved to Shanghai, there might be more places like the French Quarter (NY Town, Little London, etc.)

Until the pandemic, most of the young people, born in the 80s and since, had only known a China that was consistently better than the year before, year after year. There was a young energy and optimism. Only older parents and grandparents who knew the Cultural Revolution were wary. Even the Great Recession was mild compared to the rest of the world. The last three years have been a shock and a wakeup call to a whole generation who thought the only direction things moved was up.

The U.S. have helped China greatly for many decades, even before WW2. Huge foreign investments poured in, enormous technological assistance/transfers, and vast market opened up to them with most favored nation status granted. Virtually all of China was dirt poor pre-1980s and very backward. China was given an extended golden opportunity to benefit, to advance and evolve, and to join the community of nations. They have ample time to choose the path. China also owed on its old sovereign debt of $1.6T (aside interest) to the U.S. that remained unpaid. The Chinese government and its people show no appreciation and see the world as its harvest ground. Their public gloating and elation on the misfortunes of other nations do not surprise me any more.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant decrease in the number of foreigners living in Shanghai, with many leaving the once-prosperous city. Before the pandemic, there were approximately 460,000 foreigners from 47 countries living in Shanghai, but after the city underwent an irrational lockdown, many foreigners left. This has resulted in a deserted Foreigner Street, which was once bustling with people from different ethnic groups. The rental market for luxury real estate in Shanghai has been heavily affected, with many flats now empty and landlords struggling to pay rent to the owners. The departure of foreign executives working for multinational corporations from China suggests that these companies are downsizing or accelerating their withdrawal from the country. While this has had a direct impact on the rental and real estate market, it has also affected the economic development of Shanghai and the entire country. The situation has been likened to a failing family in an article titled "Shanghai makes us all sad," which has since been deleted. The depressed state of the city has struck a chord with many people, especially Shanghainese.

Such rapid rate of economic decline of PRChina, in just 3-years is unprecedented in the subject Study of Economics. Yes and no. Indeed an amazing and vibrant culture (or technically cultures) and in general friendly, but the thing about Chinese culture within what is today the PRC historically and especially recently is that it is a very self-centric one. There’s a tendency to put itself on a (metaphorical) pedestal to the extreme and refuse as much outside influence as possible to the point of historically kneecapping itself, but also being (metaphorically speaking) violently opposed to outsiders/outside influence unless it can be extremely and continuously controlled via local authorities to as much as possible.
Things are a bit quieter here these days but it really isn't the apocalyptic nightmare these anti china channels like to portray. Still plenty of busy shops, malls and yes foreigners. But these channels only ever focus on the negative, so they'll never show you footage of the busy places.

It's not just there. Every downtown area in most big cities are the same. Closed sties and empty streets. It's sad

Good Job Xi. Keep it up. The whole world admires you.
Such rapid rate of economic decline of PRChina, in just 3-years is unprecedented in the subject Study of Economics. This can only be caused by deliberate and highly destructive policy actions of the CCP Government to drive-away and to destroy; both local & international businesses, investments and trades and making it too risky and perilous for foreigners to further invest or even to remain invested in the PRChina. Opine, the Economy Decline End-Game has already come to PRChina. The next stage, moving forward, would be much uncertainty and surely dangerous, as the CCP Government cannot be removed nor would relinquish its Power & Control peacefully, th4 instead must exercise/implement exceptional drastic/draconian actions to stop further expressions of Chinese Citizens' dissents of its policies and its Power, by massive crackdowns/dispersions and surely sooner to stop & prevent further Chinese Citizens' exodus or fleeing the country. We are living in interesting times !.
Chinese economy was largely overestimated. They are just deflating to what they can afford, not what they want.
This is a reupload right? I got a strong sense of dejavu.
Simple solution, change your leadership, stop bullying your neighbors, embrace the world, increase the quality of your products and enjoy wealth and prosperity your people never believed possible.
foreigners come & settle: "we are invaded"
foreigners leave: "but... where are the foreigners?" 🙃
One would think that 1/2 a million foreigners wouldn't make that much of a difference in a city of 26+ Million. 🤷🏼♂
I doubt just the exit of Foreigners had so big of an impact on the economy; more likely the store closures (and the foreigners leaving) is just a sign of the recession we're heading into.
OK, you've earned your yuan now go troll another site.
Imagine calling rapidly deteriorating economy a "recession". Goes along great with "negative growth".
China has been the factory of the world for decades. There's a growing middle class consuming locally, but the GDP has been largely driven by exports. So I do think it matters that expats are leaving and foreign companies are closing shop to go to cheaper asian countries.
Great stuff. TY!
Nobody was going to Laowaijie (foreigner street) even before the pandemic. That area of Gubei wasn't popular anymore. There are definitely fewer foreigners in Shanghai but they would have found plenty if they'd gone to Found 158, Cages, Kangding Road area, or the French Concession.
Then what happened to these streets that were once popular?
Other places became popular. The expat population center shifted away from the Hongmei road area (where laowaijie is). Kangding road area became popular recently - go there any day of the week and it's packed with foreigners. @@pierrex3226
I live in Shanghai and do not have a bad word to say about China. Its safe, clean and friendly
I've been living in China for five years. There was a three year period where the boarders were closed because of the pandemic meaning if you left you couldn't get back in. A lot of my fiends went home immediately after the first lock down started because we were told the schools would be closed for six months and they saw it as a great time to have a long visit home. Then the boarders closed while they were out and some of them are still trying to come back almost four years later. Also some of my friend's work visa's required them to go back to their home country once a year. So they also ended up locked out of China. I'm sure there are other reasons the Shanghai people left but I'm positive there were a lot of people who left for these reasons.
Was that a trans dude at 1:30?
😂his voice says it all
It's xi's secret lover!
@@blackbelt2000 🤣😆
When they finally made the "foreign devils" to go home, they make surprise Pikachu face.
I spent a lot of money in Shanghai during my visits but wouldn't dare visit China with the CCP strong arming foreigners ,Asia has a lot of countries I will be visiting soon In the future
All thks to Emperor Whining-Wolf-Warrior Xi ;)
imagine being forced to be inside your buildings, starving or something... forced by the country
so when the country "opens up"
its time to run away... next time, you could die for real
they are so arrogant, they thought we would actually come back after that! 🤣🤣💀💀
Shanghai is the new Hong Kong.
Yeah Hong Kong is like Shanghai 1000% Chinese
The main difference of this mass exodus of Residents from China compared to NYC’s mass exodus during COVID is that now the NYC ppl are coming back but the foreigners prolly will take a veeeery long time to come back if ever……..
I would love to live in China. It's a beautiful place with great culture and the Chinese people are friendly, but the communist party is to unpredictable to have a stable life.
that sure is a sentence.
Can you swim?
How long will it stay a beautiful place. Does North Korea look like a beautiful place to be.
do you like food made with gutter oil and tofu dreg buildings?
A foreigner can equal 10, 100, 1000 or more local jobs. China is finding this out now, Russia found out the hard way already.
Is that a dude
I was thinking the same 🤔
😂i swear I thought that was a chick until I heard the deep voice
@@carlosparedes1556 It crazy how sometimes we all are thinking the samething.

If businesses and people do not feel safe and too many road blocks are implemented, they will leave
I always wanted to explore nature in China there seem to be so many incredible features but I won't Go if you paid me while ping pong runs the show
No democracy and no human rights.
Things are a bit quieter here these days but it really isn't the apocalyptic nightmare these anti china channels like to portray. Still plenty of busy shops, malls and yes foreigners. But these channels only ever focus on the negative, so they'll never show you footage of the busy places. You could go to any city in the US and find a couple of boarded up shops and then tell the world that the whole city looks like that. And just how many of you commenters are actually in Shanghai right now? Not many I would imagine. But that's fine, just carry on getting your daily dose of anti China news for your little dopamine hit, regardless of how accurate the reporting is in these videos.
You made some good points👍
Okay, tell us a source for Chinese news? Or are you detracting for the sake of detracting?
are you allowed to whatch RUclips?
Actually, cities in the USA are also in decline. Not because they throw foreigners in jail, but because cities here are run by compartmentalized leftists. Crime and antibusiness decisions are killing St. Louis.
@@jacobscholtissek2410 Not in china. You have to use vpn/tor to do it.
This looks good compared to Democrat run cities in the US.
Reap what you sow.
Unfortunately China is regressing back towards being an inward looking and isolated country.
This voice sounds like a robot. Besides, most people in China outside Shanghai do not feel too sorry for the Shanghainese, who are as popular in China as New Yorkers are to Americans or Parisians to French people.
