- The U.S. produces more corn than any other crop, with American farmers selling $5.3 billion of it to China last year. But China has spent years courting other producers as it is relying more on Brazil and other Latin American countries. China is also exploring ways to become self-sufficient long-term through embracing new technology and better farming education.
WSJ explains why growing its own grains has been such a struggle for China and how it has been trying to wean itself off of its reliance on U.S. corn production.

On one hand, you sanction your customer, poke him in the eye, gather your friends to go against him and then you expect him to continue to buy from you? That's not just being naive, it's also plain arrogance.
It’s cuz China will be #1 and the U.S is trying everything to stop them by starting conflicts. Same within human nature. If you want to be the best, then your gonna want your competitors to perish even if it means to break rules.
Exactly, and the US claims to love free markets, but refuses to provide the market's actual demands, like corn thats not a GMO. And maybe the US farmers need to adapt and compete with the rest of the world. Then we can talk about subsidies and big agro...

The geopolitics that brought this about is the US playing dirty and trying to apply the Tonya Harding solution to China's rise in semiconductors, EVs, etc. by attempting to kneecap China's supply sources around the world to limit China's access to them. China's response has been to limit its imports of US goods, one of which is corn, and to limit China's exports to the US of certain key commodities, such as gallium and germanium. Before the US started the trade war, China was happy to keep buying American corn. Now it's given the giant middle finger to American corn. Problem?

We in Ireland cannot grow maize corn, wheat or soya bean because the summers are too cold and wet. We can grow a little lower quality for animal feed. We can grow oats and barley very well for malting and breakfast cereal. We import these for animal feed such as an addition for beef of milk production. Our grass is top quality. I don't like the GM label on corn I buy but I have no choice but to buy it for my beef herd.
Hmmm GMOs are not proven to be bad even for humans... Feeding animals is even low risk for us.

Good! Animal husbandry was achieved across the world for thousands of years without the need for corn. Cattle especially should be fed grass, hay, haylage or silage, as nature inteded. When this is done E.Coli is a non issue, the animals are healthier and tastier. When you have top quality Irish grass i dont know why you have "no choice" but to buy for your herd, especially when you (rightly so imo) are skeptical of the GM label on the feed.
GMOs aren't bad. It's what's used to make then that's bad. Fertilizer, insecticide, etc.

As a Brazilian guy let me explain to you what´s happening. Brazil has a large and diversified source of fertilizers, so there is not dependence on Russian or other country on that matter. Corn crops require almost nothing of labour force, hence the low minimum wage do not explain its competitiveness. What explain the Brazilian competitiveness is climate factors(two harvests a year), long tradition on commodity, improvement in infrastructure, high value of Dollar compared to the Real(Brazilian currency) and subsidies from Goverment to buy brand new equipments and machinery.
On top of that, China and US have been brewing a Cold War and others parts of the world will reap the benefits of it. As simple as that.

Most that "corn" shown early in this piece with green husks and sorted by hand on the cob is sweet corn edible for humans. Field corn is harvested when the kernels have dried some and the husk is brown, Field corn has not been harvested on the cob for decades. Field corn is shelled in the combine.

I have been to Brazil. A lot of Chinese investments in roads and infrastructure has made Brazil more efficient in growing crops helping a lot of communities. However this has caused a lot of issues with deforestation as more Brazilian farmers want to get into the industry.
If America is so worried about about deforestation they should plant as many trees as Brazil cuts down

Legit question. If Corn is a commodity then why would china switching suppliers really affect the price? There still would be the same amount of corn bought and sold.
If it serves as a consolation, farmers in Brazil are planning to switch to sesame or sorghum next year. The price received was 2 dollars bellow the production cost as there is not enough storage space. The first crop did help with the overall profit though but people are not very happy about it. Not sure about how will that gone with China as we also need to send a message of being a reliable supplier. And the end of the Ukraine grain deal will also raise prices. But people are not thrilled about planting corn in Brazil.
When Brazil direction is clear, they will corner the Corn Market World Wide with the secure Asian market.

Just look at how Macron, Sanchez and Scholz all recently visited China and were so eager to discuss business. I would not be surprised if Meloni makes a trip soon in the near future. Australia played itself. For some reason they thought they were the only country in the world that produced wine. Australia even thinks that it has a grip over China due to iron ore exports. China has started transitioning their iron ore purchases to Brazilian, Russian and Guinea Africa sources. Guinea has the largest untapped high grade iron ore deposit in the world and has restarted the Simandou mine back in March. Brazil produces at around half the capacity of Australia and has around half the discovered reserves whereas Russia produces at around a quarter of the capacity of Australia and has half the discovered reserves meaning tons of future mining potential. Not to mention the NE of China itself, which is sitting in 4th place in both mining and reserves. No one has a everlasting monopoly on any product or commodity in this world and a lot of countries are learning this lesson the hard way.

Brazil has another great advantage: we use a lot of ethanol, but it's produced from sugar cane, so there's a lot of corn left over for export. Infrastructure in Brazil is improving, agriculture is the fastest growing sector, there is a lot of money in the countryside and we have Embrapa, a public agricultural research company that has revolutionized cultivation in the country. The next step is to expand wheat plantations in tropical areas, as was done with soybeans.

Deforestation of Amazonia for corn to cane will be disastrous as tropical soils are thin and alterations to the water cycle will be unsustainable leading to desertification..
@@camd6102 Corn is produced in the South, Southeast and Midwest regions of Brazil, not in the Amazon. Cane is produced in the Southeast, Midwest, Northeast and part of the South. Most of the devastation in the Amazon comes from illegal mining and cattle ranching. In addition, most of the crops grown in Brazil have been adapted to the tropical climate by the state-owned research organization, Embrapa.

With infrastructure development and most especially irrigation schemes that this continent is investing in, why not? Nothing that happens in Africa should concern you unless you're a native African. its too late. I have family that are farmers in Mexico and US. GMO corn has genetically engineered herbicide in them. The corn plants are resistant to strong herbicides and the farmers will then use these strong herbicides to treat the farmlands. The downside is that you can hardly plant any other things there that will not be affected by the herbicide in the soil.

The whole thing boils down to simply SUPPLY AND DEMAND. Brazil has a huge record breaking crop of corn this year and have to market it somewhere, they sell more cheaper than USA corn.
I'm American and I don't want American corn either and refuse to buy it. It's gmo and sprayed with roundup poison. I grow my own corn.

Brazil is already the world first producer of coffee, sugar cane, orange juice, soy bean. It has the largest cattle herd in the world. It is the first exporter of chicken, beef, celullose, cotton (2023) and soon will be biggest corn producer. It is achieving autonomy in wheat production perhaps next year. It has the largest amount of arable land in the world. But it uses only 64 million hectares from 410 million ha available of arable land.
Brazil, is not going to be exporter because they need cheap oil and cheap fertilizers to make the Brazil economic model work. With America, China, and Russia pulling out of "Globalization" that will affect Brazil. Only if Brazil allies with the United States it can reduce the de-globalization affects and global warming that also affecting. Your luck that Argentina is such a economic basket case otherwise they would be killing your economy.

When I traveled in Southwest China I noticed that rice was grown at low elevations and corn was grown only above a certain altitude. I think China is using its marginal land for corn whereas the US is using its best land. Things are probably changing in China if they're eating more meat.

China's doesn't have the people in the right places anymore to produce anywhere near enough rice to feed itself due to industrial migration to cities. Rice is an extremely finicky labor and water intensive crop that they and almost the entire world cultivates manually. Corn likes heat and humidity.

My friends import corn of US to process pop corn, beside it will use to the animals too. But umfortunately, if we import corn from US to Imdonesia will spend time at least a month and the price to clearance of the port will pay tax of importy duty too. Because China knew about a disaster more than ten years ago, American companies induced Chinese farmers to plant specific crops through agricultural technology subsidies, which later led to American companies controlling China's grain prices and manipulating and acquiring Chinese companies to obtain benefits. The United States is also doing this in many countries around the world. Because food is the lifeblood of a country, controlling food can not only gain benefits but also control the country at the same time. These are the same companies that sell poor as dirt farmers their sterilised seeds that are expensive and are only good for one crop.
The crops will never yield seeds themselves so the farmers have to buy expensive seeds for another crop from these controlling companies again after selling their crop for pittance.
Its a viscious cycle that keeps their strangle hold on these poor farmers and never lets go.
How were they able to control grain prices? I feel like I’m missing information here, and don’t understand how the first statement leads into the latter one in your first sentence.
I tried looking it up and only get Reuters articles from 2011 saying that the US corn supply is the shortest it’s been in decades, and referencing severe droughts in Chinas wheat belt.
I found something that could better fit what you’re talking about, but it’s a article hosted by the US department of agriculture so I don’t think you’d accept that.
In the article they speak about a US export surge in 2013 in relations with China. It starts off with Chinese government support (agriculture taxes, payment to grain producers, subsidies for “improved seeds,” and subsidies for machinery purchases) in 2004. Over the period Chinese officials saw that while payments rapidly grew over the decade to $75 billion usd, it was noted that the subsidies have not kept pace with rising production incentives to produce grains and other crops. “With agricultural production costs outpacing the subsidies, Chinese officials began raising price supports to boost farm income and higher domestic prices led to rapid growth in agricultural imports.” The Chinese officials introduced minimum procurement prices for rice and wheat in 2004-05 to act as a floor under market prices. Subsequently in 2008 prices were to be raised annually, and added supports for corn, soybeans, and rapeseed. Additional supports were made by the Chinese government in 2009 (pork) and 2011 (cotton) to keep domestic prices steadily in a rising path. “So as to prevent further erosion of net returns to farmers.”
The stated goal of the price support programs is to prevent steep decline in farm prices by purchasing commodities during a slack demand. Because of this though by tying the floor price to increases in production costs and the requirement of commodities to be resold at a higher price to recover storage costs creates a strong tendency for prices to increase. The incentive to sell grain reserves is weakened, since both interest and storage costs are subsidized.
They then reference that these price support programs, with domestic inflationary pressures, and coupled with a appreciating RMB at the time have pushed Chinese prices above the global market prices. From 2008-2013, Chinese support prices (in US dollars) rose over 60% for wheat and corn, 90% for indica rice, and 100% for japonica rice. Those increases included the effects from a 20% appreciation of the RMB vs the US dollar. That by 2011 the price of major Chinese commodities were 20-30% higher than prices in the United States. China began to import more agricultural commodities as its domestic prices rose higher.
Well, if China not buying their corn could send our farmers into bankruptcy, then it sounds to me like those farmers should diversify their portfolio. 🙂

Consumers in general don't know that ALL crops get sprayed with herbicide 5 days before harvest, so they don't object to that because of ignorance. notice how the harvest in this video is of dead corn? that's not natural you know! That's called "decanting" which means spraying it with herbicide to dry it out for harvest. 5 day withholding period between spraying & harvesting for human consumption, hence the 5 days before harvest

China in the past has had a problem growing quality corn. It was often speculated that much of it had toxic molds that made it unusable for livestock feed. Now that Syngenta is owned by a Chinese company their gmo insect resistance might be used, happens to be that they have a trait that stops bugs from attacking the grain and reduces toxic mold.
In addition to Brazil China also has agreements with Ukraine, Ukraine has a arable land area comparable to the US corn belt in terms of growing season, moisture, and land area. The ware in Ukraine is going to end and grain raised again and flow out as it did before.

The US farm sector is a classic case of government overreach. American farmers should focus on high value and high quality crops, not mass quantities of staples which the market cannot adequately compensate.

Probably the biggest factor is the price in yuan when it is delivered to China. The exchange rate and tariffs and embargos are big factors. There are a lot of politics go into trade. For a county to sell more corn at a lower price does not do the farmers and exporters much good.

In the past south America appeared not to have banned the chemical DDT spray to reduce malaria or breeding of mosquitoes and etc etc.
DDT is renowned for seeping into the soil. So it's questionable whether farmed produce is not contaminated by this chemical.
I use to buy Quinoa and fried fruits exported from South America, but once it became known to me that DDT is still use in South America.....????!! ☹️
