It seems like China's government is spending as much as US private investors are on fusion, when in reality if you sum up the numbers, US is still outspending China by 3-to-1, it's just that this investment is led by private sector instead of public one like in a communist country.

In engineering, having a great idea is just 1% of the work, the rest 99% is building it. If someone else builds your idea, you can't really say they copied you. (Especially when you didn't build it yourself, because they likely found and solved new problems in the process)

It is the most advanced experimental fusion reactor is being built in France. Other than the Americans, the Europeans do work with China, Japan, Korea and even Russia. By far the most Tokamak’s can be found in Europe and the UK. Maybe it would be better to work with the Chinese instead of seeing them as the enemy? If the Americans think that the laws of physics are different in the US than in the rest of the world, hey might be in for a big surprise.

It's imperative that China and the US work together. During the Cold War, the Lacy-Zarubin agreement worked to get American and Soviet scientists to work together in fields that had a mutual benefit to both countries. There should be a similar agreement between China and the US. Working together to solve climate change is much more important than competing against each other for a goal that will ultimately benefit everyone in both countries.

@posthocprior We already got such a collaborative fusion project: ITER. While the intentions behind it are great, I wouldn't qualify ITER as a success story. I think it is quite the opposite, ITER's organizational structure got very complicated and is best described as a next to unmanageable mess. It is a shame that the majority of nuclear fusion funding worldwide has been sunk into that specific technological approach (Tokamak) for decades. It would have been better to fund several other technical alternatives first before settling on a specific approach.

They've reached some important milestones in the meantime which is exciting. On the other hand, with some more investments and political will there are some great Gen-IV fission reactors which could have been brought forward instead (e.g. Molten Salt reactors) that deliver most of the benefits without being as complex to build as a fusion reactor.

Fusion is NOT the answer as it will be extremely expensive and will still require massive infrastructure of wires and cables, strung all over the world. High-efficiency solar + battery storage is the answer as it offers the least cost of power, and can be distributed evenly on roofs, canopies and locally in small towns and cities.

Not that hard if you focus on Advanced Vocational Training. And Upskilling Blue collar workers into White collared workers. It's insane how much of our pre graduate degrees has nothing to do with applicable skills and that schools can charge 2x to 4x times the price for STEM degree in these fields. They've reached some important milestones in the meantime which is exciting. On the other hand, with some more investments and political will there are some great Gen-IV fission reactors which could have been brought forward instead (e.g. Molten Salt reactors) that deliver most of the benefits without being as complex to build as a fusion reactor.

Fusion is NOT the answer as it will be extremely expensive and will still require massive infrastructure of wires and cables, strung all over the world. High-efficiency solar + battery storage is the answer as it offers the least cost of power, and can be distributed evenly on roofs, canopies and locally in small towns and cities.
solar needs wires too tho? Sure single family homes can be independent but you need large solar fields to power urban centers (where most people live) which needs electrical infrastructure as well.
