I grew up in an apartment even smaller than this near Stuttgart...can't imagine to live in something like this ever again. Lately we lived in a huge apartment in a small village near Ulm, because we did not want to live in the city again.
Now we moved to the US and live in a house for the first time of our lives and it's awesome. But having a small apartment has it's advantages. You seem like you used the space perfectly! Hope it's not that expensive and you feel home!
Greetings from Virginia, Rick and Tamara

I live in an old German house and I have the fridge in a separate room where people in earlier times, when there were no fridges, used to store their food. It's more energy-efficient that way, because in the kitchen, you want it warm, so the fridge has to cool down much harder than in a room where it's cool already.
I inherited the house I live in, so I don't pay rent, but there are so many other fees and costs you don't think about when living in a rented apartment. Trash disposal is one thing, owners' taxes go by the square meter, and as I'm in a rural area, I also need a car to get somewhere, and you know German fuel prices. And I have to pay for all repairs by myself. Rents in the bigger cities are high, maybe too high in some areas, but all in all, I don't think I'm better off owning a house.
I don't find cellar compartments very creepy. They're very useful because you can hide things there the environmental authorities better don't see, like half-used cans of paint. My attics are creepier, because there are spiders. Not that there were extremely poisonous spiders in Germany, they can't kill a human being, but I don't like them.

Hamburg here. It really depends what area you want to live in. Everything close to the lake Alster or the river Elbe is almost unaffordable. I live very close to the Alster and pay 1.400,- € cold for 70 m2 and that is considered to be cheap for this area 🙈

looks like a typical 1960s/70s built apartment. today the layout woud be somewhat different, bathroom bigger, and stuff like hot water boiler etc would not be there.

    • @lifeingermany_
      @lifeingermany_  3 года назад +2

That’s true! The new builds are often more open concept as well! And maybe a second bathroom - though not always bigger (at least not in Düsseldorf - lacking space haha)

Also, apartments nowadays tend to be more open-plan like in the US, with the kitchen often being a part of the living room (which has its downsides).

    Hello and good evening Jenna,
A normal clean apartment is okay, but i prefer it when it also shows that someone really life's in there and it doesn't look like museum.
You are a family of three and you use your apartment.
Seeing the cellar of someone can be very interesting too.
Thanks for the tour and seeing your little helper cleaning everything 😉 ☺️😂✌️
Have a nice weekend and stay healthy.

50 square meters, two rooms in the very central Pempelfort section of Dusseldorf and we pay 850 warm. We have a cellar space for storage also. So for convenience and transportation links (bus stops, tram stops and U-Bahn) are all around plus a very nice shopping area, we pay more. That is not unexpected. Having an elevator is very nice, as we do. Plus our apartment is cat friendly and many other tenants have cats and/or dogs.

My last apartment in Toronto was a tiny and dark basement studio in Chinatown and I paid the equivalent of 910 euro, more expensive than this one. And that was two years ago, it's probably worse now. People in Germany ask me "Why did you leave Canada, I hear it's great"... if they only knew.

    • @lifeingermany_

Hahaha I say the EXACT SAME THING! And I really love the idea of being able to go back to Canada as a tourist now, because I see only the wonderful side of the country! And not the insane traffic, 18 lane highways, daily grind working overtime and getting underpaid and the outrageous rent prices in the GTA. 😝🙈

In Germany the rent is mostly looked at in Euros per square meter for comparisons. Also for buying an appartment you would use that number. Every appartment is different in size so that makes more sense. From an expenses view the total amount has to be seen, of course. But to make a decision whether a place is expensive the per sqm approach is taken.

I live near Würzburg in Bavaria. 800€ warm is really cheap for this apartment in Düsseldorf 😂 I do pay 900€ warm for 85qm but my city is waaaaaaaay smaller. If its not necessary you shouldn’t move into a city. Apartments or houses in small villages near cities are way cheaper. But as you said, do not move into a furnishired apartment. There is a reason why they are cheaper in the middle of nowhere. The infrastructure sucks donkey cock, hence it is more expensive to live there. If you live at the outskirts of a big city, it is relatively inexpensive and you have full access to infrastructure of a city.

Almost every city in germany has a "Mietspiegel". It's a chart of the amount of money you usually have to spend per square meter when renting an apartment. It's kind of a benchmark so you can evaluate if the rent for an appartment is reasonable or if a landlord is trying to rip you off. However, there are fewer vacancies than people that are in need of a place to live. And that unfortunately very often leads to the situation that you may be forced to accept a rent that is sagnificantly higher than the one you may find suitable in the "Mietspiegel" 😒

My best piece of advice would be to take a year off of work and take an intensive German language course! After that, you’ll have no problems finding a job! There are tons of English jobs available too - and if you go somewhere like Berlin, then German is not always entirely necessary. Germany isn’t a negative place by any means! It is amazing! However, there can be some pretty negative people 🙈 you just have to learn not to care about what people think. This isn’t everywhere, but in some areas.

To be very honest with you: You do not live in a very TYPICAL German apartment. I have never had my fridge not in the kitchen or the water boiler in the kitchen. Haha... It may happen in really old buildings, but it is definitely not typical. What is very typical, though... in case you'd like to address the differences like the keys in the room doors :), the heaters at the walls of the rooms are very German, and light switches are totally different. :) Love your videos, though! Keep it up!!

Ahah I know right! I have a little list of german lingo related to renting an apartment here: lifeingermany.com/accommodations/
But cold rent is basically the cost of the flat without any extras, and warm typically includes heating, water, gas, maybe chimney sweeping, etc. (But there’s also expenses like parking and internet which are in top of the warm rent)

Cold=apartment only, warm=apartment+utilities (heating, electricity can be or not depending on the contract, water, other things like e g. janitor, insurance, garbage collection etc). It's important to read the details what is included. Also the utility costs can be adjusted if you don't pay fixed rate (normally shared apartments), but an upfront payment of the actual costs and this will be settled with the the real costs. So you can get money back or have to pay more. So you have to read if the contract states "all utilities included" or just "utilities is amount x"

Great video. 800 Euro warm seems cheap as rent in south Florida is about $1,800 a month. Let’s say the average salary in Florida is $65,000 a year. Would that be similar for let’s say an accountant? Also is the cost of living comparable to the USA?

It really depends on... if you want to rent an appartement in Cologne in the "Kranhaus" you pay 25 € / m² cold (or more). Add 2 € / m² to get it warm. So the same appartement Janna is living in would cost 1.971 € or 2,100 $. Same City but bad district (Kölnberg) would cost ... well ... maybe 12 € / m². There we got the 876 € or 933 $. If you want to check out what that means search in youtube for "Kölnberg Hood"). I live in this district and see the houses from my window.
      Salary depends, too. ø 68.000 € / year in Cologne or 72,500 $.

There isn't really anything typically German about it. First, most Germans don't have a dryer at all and then I've never seen a dryer in the bedroom. I've also never seen a refrigerator not in the kitchen. And what should be so special about the keys. I do not understand? What else should a door key look like?
And hiding the gas boiler with wood is perhaps not the very best idea, because the viewing window is already intended so that you can see whether the flame is burning or not in case of doubt.

    • @lifeingermany_

Don't get me wrong I like your videos, but I am always shocked when people show the faces of their young children so that everybody is able to recognize them. North Americans don’t seem to care about the personality rights of their children.

    • @lifeingermany_
      @lifeingermany_  3 года назад +1

I’m somewhere in between … but I don’t think it’s fair either to say they “don’t care”. It’s just a different world we live in back in my home country. I’m not a fan of featuring children as the focal point of a video, but my family has agreed that if my son makes the occasional background appearance, then it’s okay. If I’m being honest, I love making videos, but it’s simply impossibleto manage this with a kiddo who always wants to be on camera 🙈. We’ve tried to find a healthy balance.
Posting photos of your children with an emoji on top of their face is something I don’t understand at all. If someone doesn’t want to show their kids on social, then I think it’s better to keep them out entirely. I find the emoji thing somehow worse than showing them in the background a little!
