I think both should be the case. Sith can build synthetic crystals that are compliant to their wrath and naturally red, but they can also bleed a crystal to destroy its resistance to their will. 4:09 - So I guess during this scene he is feeling his Crystal resisting him, so he immediately decides to bleed it. Nice little bit you can see come together on a second watch/playthrough.
I do like this scene, however in my opinion I think some of it is a little rushed. I think there should have been more dialog between him waking up and then bleeding his crystal. Apart from that I think this scene was great. It's also the first time we've seen a kyber crystal being bled (besides from comics)
Given he was already a Fallen Jedi before the tank literally having killed multiple Jedi...His opinion and beliefs were set in stone prior to the timeskip. He just used Cal to escape and when he realizes he's a Jedi that just means he's an enemy to kill. Given that the story has another traitor faking their allegiance as well we didn't need two Fallen Jedi's pretending to be friends so just getting to the action also makes sense in gameplay terms.
I think it's better if they drag out the dialogue, just a little bit more. Using the elements like that scene in the Joker movie. Joker meets Murray. I wish they'd kept it intense like that scene and after the crystal bursts, everything fell silent and then the reveal. They could've dragged it out by letting Dagan Gera slowly talk to Cal and finding out where he and Cal stands. It'd make the scene more intense, I think. Since the audience can tell everything as we see the bigger picture while Cal is good inside and believed that he found an ally. So his naivete here was shown because he found more of his kind, just like how he released Dagan immediately without questioning the reasons why. In my opinion having that slow and long conversation between them before he turns, would have everyone biting their nails as they slowly realize what's happening.
@@Asriel_Cypher I already felt then tension and was like okay get ready Cal. It doesn't need to be slow...There are already two other characters that take on such a role in the game.
I personally can’t keep track of what we’re officially going by now. Is it still that they are kinda sentient life? And that “bleeding” is throwing hatred and anger through the crystal and essentially corrupting it? Or is that something different?
@@미친님-y6j Play it safe, the movies shows and games have constantly retconned the books so general rule for me is its not truly going to be canon until established on screen. the books are too hard to track and there are so many, so as good as they are they never end up mattering to the people making the shows movies and games. They are pretty clear nowadays or at least try to be on what the current canon is and where it fits. right now the timeline is TPM, AOTC, the entire clone wars series, revenge of the sith, the bad batch, Solo, fallen order, the obiwan kenobi series, jedi survivor, rebels, Andor, Rogue one, ANH, ESB, ROTJ, Mando, Book of boba, eventually ahsoka and the acolyte and anything else disney announces will continue to be canon and unfortunately the sequels. And battlefront 2 campaign but that shit gets ignored so hard. Outside of that everything is ignored, even books they claim to be canon they often ignore (happened alot in the sequels), but sometimes they borrow things from legends as seen with the existence of the high republic and whatnot, so my rule of thumb now has just been until you see it on screen its nothing more than a cool story because directors are so likely to just ignore the external material because its too hard to track, and I beleive the team they have in place managing the current canon only manages material that hits the screens. All this being said, out of all those projects listed, kyber crystals are only ever shown in clone wars, rebels, rogue one, andor and the jedi games. On top of this, dagan bleeding his crystal is the very first explanation in any of these listed projects for how lightsabers are red, so bleeding crystals is the only on screen explanation for sith sabers, so that is what theyre going by officially. Anything established in any book that contradicts that is now considered legends, So as i said, even if the book stories are amazing, only consider the movies shows and games to be official canon because they are the ones they seem to actually put continuity effort into now. Once the story makes it into an on screen project, they typically dont retcon it (at least not so blatantly like switching from synthetic crystals to bled ones) so in this case, bleeding crystals made it from page to screen, now its canon.
@@미친님-y6j and yes my undesrstanding is bleeding a crystal is corrupting a crystal which are essentially living elements of the force, using hatred and rage, which metaphorically "bleeds" it draining its pure energy and replacing it with hate, turning it red as a side effect. Crystals can be purified, but they do not retain whatever colour they had and instead turn white (ahsokas sabers) although as I said before, since that explanation is from a book (which that book itself has been retconned in how ahsoka survived order 66 by the clone wars) it isnt truly part of the new canon until we see it on screen. confusing, and unfortunate, but being a film series at its core I just find it easiest to let whats on screen dictate whats canon.
At least this one is better than Acolyte. Vader had to put in lot of time and effort to bleed his crystal, but showing that much would take up too much time in-game. At least her emotion is shown.
its crazy that we have only ever seen kyber crystals, still to this day, exclusively outside of the main saga. Not once in any movie are they ever mentioned or shown. not even the sequels which are well after kyber crystals were established. Rogue one and andor are also the only live action star wars media to adress kyber crystals, and this game is the very first time we see a crystal be bled outside of a book. its wild that star wars is so big that this sort of thing is nearly common knowledge yet essentially never mentioned in most of its most popular media.
There was that frame in the worst Star Wars movie that showed the kyber crystal of Anakin's lightsaber when Rey and Ben struggled for it just before the Holdo Maneuver.
You're forgetting that starkiller base is literally the husk of the planet that Jedi retrieved khyber crystals from. Strip mined some for the death stars and the eclipse, turned the remnant into starkiller base. So any crystal seen there were khyber.

I mean Cal is regular do-gooder boy-scout Jedi tho; you can tell how quickly he started panicking when Dagan started revealing the story, and the moment the crystal was bled he ignited his lightsaber ready for battle. None of the signs are telling Dagan that this Jedi will be receptive to his motivations lol
I have a feeling that he had a lot of time to build up that anger, and the hurt from that betrayal he fed it all into that crystal and all of his pain his anger his hate all of it and since it was already his Khyber I don't think there was much need for him to force it as much since it already had a bond. Unlike one say took from a Jedi they'd slain
@@KenshiImmortalWolf Sith usually kill a jedi to steal their crystal and bleed it. Since this was his own crystal maybe it didn't resist him because he was already attuned to it.

Its such a shame to see that crystal go red. Golden sabers are my favorite, and seeing it get corrupted is sad. But man is it a good scene. Very well done.
Well there are different factors tho right. This is a high republic jedi their experience in the field are far greater than Vader's time. But it's also worth noting that Vader knew that he was evil for doing what he did. He knew that he was wrong and that's what conflicted his Anakin part. He knew he was doing something wrong but the pain the hurt everything was clouding him from being good again. And he knew it, the greatest battle in that scene was with himself not with bleeding his own crystal. With Dagan on the other hand he thought he was doing good. He wanted his revenge on the order, and just wanted to do what he wants, he was a self righteous evil type of character where he thought he was the hero. That's why it was easier for him, there was no conflict or doubt just pure rage and hate
That's because that's not how crystals work. You can't bleed a crystal. You CAN however use a natural red crystal (And good luck with that because those are rare) or make a synthetic crystal
@@MrWill9002 I recommend checking the early Darth Vader comics - in the new canon, Kyber Crystals (what lightsaber crystals are called now) are living things and are innately aligned with the Light Side. To create a red Kyber Crystal - one aligned with the Dark Side - one must channel all of their hatred, rage, etc into it, which causes it to 'bleed'. Vader got his red lightsaber crystal by killing a Jedi Master and bleeding his crystal, which was much more interesting than just making a synthetic one in a furnace, I think.
@@spaceonisorceress4406 Still bullshit and you know it. In the true canon, Sith use SYNTHETIC crystals because they work much better with the Dark Side. Besides, the Sith have to work in the shadows. This 'bleeding the crystal' crap is just another way of Disney treating people like their idiots.

I hate for how sudden and premature it was for Osha bleeding Sal's lightsaber red. It's now bringing this example into question. I kinda liked how they showed this in acolyte. But now it has mfs like Star Wars theory saying and demanding how difficult it was for Vader to bleed his lighsaber, it should be difficult for every Sith to turn their lightsaber red
@@MRbug_423 One of the reasons the kyber bleeding nonsense is so stupid is it literally requires a Sith apprentice to kill a Jedi to steal the crystal from their lightsaber, since the Jedi control the only natural source of the crystals -- Ilum. So now we are led to believe that every 30-ish years, a Jedi is killed or "just disappears" with no explanation? Given that the Sith were undiscovered for 1000 years, and the Old/High Republic eras were supposed to be an era of peace in the galaxy, this doesn't fly with an estimated 30-40 Jedi deaths under suspicious circumstances where either their kyber or their entire lightsaber was nowhere to be found. It also doesn't fly with Anakin fucking Skywalker literally killing dozens, if not hundreds of Jedi at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, including the slaughter of children, the cold-blooded murder of the Separatist leaders on Mustafar and his all-consuming rage when Obi-Wan confronted him. His saber would have bled under those circumstances by Disney doctrine. It's perfectly reasonable for people to call out the bs when it is presented. Or are we only allowed to be Star Wars fans if we accept it all without question and declare that Disney is the best thing to ever happen to the franchise?
This was an addition to Star Wars I applaud Disney/comic book writers integrating into the franchise; bleeding a crystal feels so much more personal than simply making a synthetic crystal, this is more visceral and personal, pouring rage and pain into the crystal
This is intense he bled his own crystal this was basically a part of him and he corrupted it this to me was one of the most powerful scenes in the game
The game tells us about his and Rayvis’ team up before we see them interact. Dagan says “My duel with the Gen’dai didn’t take this long.” That’s the name of Rayvis’ species, implying they had been aligned a lot longer than anyone knew.
@@twinodoom it's like power. If a section of air is all of a sudden gone, what happens? More air flows to the voided space. Treat the kyber crystal as such. Dagan siphoned it hard, and in doing so, it tried to make up for the loss of power. As for that blast that Cal got to his face, it was the kyber crystal saying enough as the void was filled at a rapid rate when Dagan was sated with his restoration
"It was my home and they just expected me to throw it away." While I don't agree with Dagan, the raw pain in his voice makes me sympathize with him. Imagine building your dream home for decades, spending all these resources to make your dream a reality, and then your boss tells you to move to another state for your job. I can totally see why he would snap after everything that happened.
I think that's because it's his crystal which is tied and connected to Dagen so it bleeding easily is because the crystal was his. The reason why others had a hard time bleeding their crystal like Vader and Kylo Ren was that their crystals were not theirs so it took more effort.
The difficulty varies on the crystal and if the character is conflicted with light side or not. Ben Solo’s experience wasn’t too hard, he just let out a scream and it hurt his hand a bit. Vader’s crystal sent him flying backwards into a wall and gave him visions of him killing the Emperor and finding Obi-Wan to beg for his forgiveness.
Being for real he would actually make a deadly inquisitor a Jedi master level threat. That Cal couldn’t even beat him without using a trick to catch them off guard and jumping him.
I knew he was going to be a villain, and I was really expecting his lightsaber to already be red when he first ignited it. Sith often would be initiated by stealing a Jedi's lightsaber after killing them, channeling the dark side into the crystal at the heart of the saber, and turning it red, thus "making it bleed".
@@MonosEx That is what I want to know, too. It's super badass don't get me wrong, but is it merely a symbolic gesture to show the world that you're using the Dark Side?
Depends on whose writing. It's either corrupting a real crystal into a synthetic, or it's forcing a vacuum of the force and then filling it with force of the force wielder(in all cases I'm aware of the "dark" side) making a blade attuned to them at that moment. The power question is purely a matter of where the reader/author falls on the is the dark side more powerful spectrum.
It's mostly symbolic. Kyber crystals are sacred, and the Jedi are highly protective of them. Due to their connection to the Force, they may even have some kind of limited consciousness. Corrupting them is like a huge sacrilege and a part of proving that the Sith is committed. If done improperly, the crystal could be damaged, which results in an unstable blade like Kylo Ren's. They can also be purified, which is how Ahsoka got her white blades. While the red crystals are attuned to the Dark side, and might offer some benefit for a Dark side user, on the whole they function just the same as a regular lightsaber.
Actually true. Obi-Wan didn’t kill Anakin when he lost an arm and Luke didn’t kill him either. But Anakins did kill Dooku so I guess if you lose both arms you’re free game.
That's the point. A bled crystal is in pain, it's been traumatized by hate and anger. It's now the perfect focus for a Sith/Dark Jedi who is in as much pain as the crystal. They harmonize and reflect each other's pain back at one another, building and seething like an open festering wound.
I understand that it was shown to be fast for dramatic effect. Bleeding (retuning) crystals was first introduced well before Disney took over and is not new. Tuning crystals was done in SWG twenty years ago.
Well I looked it up and the bleeding first appeared in Darth Vader 2017 5 that was written by Charles Soule. Or are refering to something else I missed?
I've said it before and I'll say it again: this is one of the few times were the new canon makes waaaay more sense than the old canon. In the old canon, the reason for dark side users using red lightsabers was because they almost always used synthetic lightsaber crystals and somehow these synthetic crystals being "stronger but more unstable." Which even as a kid, I kind of felt "Meh" about that. But establishing that even sith lightabers are powered by kyber crystals, just corrupted ones, makes it make sense that only dark side users would use them because they are the only ones depraved enough to corrupt a kyber crystal like that. The lightside equivalent of cleansing corrupted kyber crystals to make white lightsabers was also a nice addition imo
So you are telling me Yoda knew about this Tanalorr place and that he wore these bright looking clothes, then in the second movie he complains that Jedi are getting more arrogant? The clothes of the High Republic reek of arrogance to me compared to the outfits of the late republic. So do the rainbow spectrum lightsabers and their sophisticated style. Emphasis on "apparently" because let's be honest, the strength never was demonstrated in any meaningful way.
I get being upset about new Canon changes, but this is a legitimately more narratively powerful lore device than what we had before.
I think both should be the case. Sith can build synthetic crystals that are compliant to their wrath and naturally red, but they can also bleed a crystal to destroy its resistance to their will. This is why Luke's lightsaber, which he made with an artificial crystal but one that he didn't need to overpower, is green.
Really cool to actually see the first time the bleeding process in action, not just in comic book pages.
I was hoping for it to be more exciting. It literally just changes color.

Dagan Gerra is a FANTASTIC Villain. As a diehard fan of The High Republic era, it was really interesting to see a Jedi from that era turn to the dark side. Even after being frozen in a stasis tank for over 200 years, he still hasn’t been able to escape from his emotional scars.
The next two twists were pretty sick too. With you know who and them being a you know what. I really enjoyed the story and immediately wanted more when credits rolled.

And idk what I’d call it. Would depend on the story. I think Cal might turn though or become a Grey Jedi.
I liked when Degan was released from the bacta you got a section where he sounded something like Darth Vader breathing through the bacta mask.
4:09 - So I guess during this scene he is feeling his Crystal resisting him, so he immediately decides to bleed it. Nice little bit you can see come together on a second watch/playthrough.
I never thought watching that crystal bleeding would make my skin absolutely crawl, it felt raw and wrong which is absolutely incredible
I do like this scene, however in my opinion I think some of it is a little rushed. I think there should have been more dialog between him waking up and then bleeding his crystal. Apart from that I think this scene was great. It's also the first time we've seen a kyber crystal being bled (besides from comics)
Its not like he has much to think about he was frozen in anger
Given he was already a Fallen Jedi before the tank literally having killed multiple Jedi...His opinion and beliefs were set in stone prior to the timeskip. He just used Cal to escape and when he realizes he's a Jedi that just means he's an enemy to kill.
Given that the story has another traitor faking their allegiance as well we didn't need two Fallen Jedi's pretending to be friends so just getting to the action also makes sense in gameplay terms.
You can tell they really wanted to do more with Dagan but the game was long enough already
Im a big kegends fan and personally i think bleeding crystals is far cooler than them being synthetic, to each their own, and so crying please
I personally can’t keep track of what we’re officially going by now. Is it still that they are kinda sentient life? And that “bleeding” is throwing hatred and anger through the crystal and essentially corrupting it? Or is that something different?
i thought there was both
Sith used synthetic because they didnt have access to kyber crystals but dark jedi just bled the ones they had.
agreed
Got this suggested after Acolyte Lmao

its crazy that we have only ever seen kyber crystals, still to this day, exclusively outside of the main saga.

Its such a shame to see that crystal go red. Golden sabers are my favorite, and seeing it get corrupted is sad. But man is it a good scene. Very well done.
Made it look easy compared to Vader doing it. What a Chad.

@@krisdphillips Was this just symbolic or it actually made the light-saber more powerful?
Didn't notice it then but when he mentioned his duel with the Gen'dai he's referring to Rayvis

Defiler! Desecrator! Kyber crystals are not to be bled! It is unnatural, it hurts them!
That's the point. A bled crystal is in pain, it's been traumatized by hate and anger. It's now the perfect focus for a Sith/Dark Jedi who is in as much pain as the crystal. They harmonize and reflect each other's pain back at one another, building and seething like an open festering wound.

I approve of this retcon
Had to explain what this meant to a friend and it blew their mind.
