  • Once again, something just a little different. Join me for a tour of PORTLAND'S CITY OF THE DEAD, the largest mausoleum on the West Coast. With the remains of over 90,000 people resting here (with room for another 40,000 more), it truly is a Necropolis. Complete with resident ghosts and a labyrinth of halls, rooms, nooks, and levels, it is truly a sight to behold. Open to the public just one day a year, on Memorial Day, it's worth a visit.

I went to Llewellyn Grade school right next to the crematorium and intermittently a foul odor would emanate from the crematorium , we would say, " another Grandma up in smoke."

I might have gone through there in 1991. At the time, I was in cemetery sales, and in the area on vacation. It was amazing, and the columbaria were especially interesting. They held a variety of styles of urns, with a favorite being made to resemble books. That's just what I would chose for myself.

I worked here in the 90s. We all knew what a magical place it was. During morning break we would go to the 8th floor where is the maintenance department had their office and eat the donuts that were delivered fresh. You truly could spend time looking for a specific crypt or niche and not see a person in those long, spooky corridors. You enter the building on the 5th floor, and the other floors are below ground. When we pushed the button for the elevator to come get us from the dungeness wings, it was always very creepy when the elevator door slowly opened to retrieve us.

@oculartremors There is a lot of precious marble and they don't want any sort of vandalism. It could also be per request of the family that owns the plot.

I wish I’d known about this sooner, ‘cause now I have to wait until next Memorial Day to go see it. It’s practically within walking distance, and I’ve always had an interest in such things, so I’m surprised I didn’t know about it until now.

All these folks ashes are there but their spirit is someplace else. If there are spirits there they may feel protected and safe. Interesting subject and place, I am sure the spirits will make sure that no one breaks in. And if they do they will regret it. So, stay safe, warm/cool, and blessings.

I knew about this. My ex decided to become a mortician at 23 and did the training and told me about it. Crazy but I do miss her. She probably left. Most intelligent people who could leave Portland did

“Most intelligent people who could leave Portland did.”… There’s a lot about this statement I don’t understand, but something tells me I don’t really want you to explain it. You see, this is usually a statement made about mind-numbing backwaters and burbs, not bustling centers of culture and opportunity. Of course, Portland has mostly changed in negative ways over the past decade or so, but, not only are the reasons for that mostly about issues facing the country and world as a whole, but it also doesn’t explain why your statement speaks of the past (unless you’re referring to a recent past in a way that sounds more distant). I was born in Portland in the eighties, and, although I’ve lived in a couple other places, Portland has been my lifelong home. I have some criticisms of it, but there are far worse places to live. If economic inequality wasn’t such a tremendous issue, it would sure help a lot, but, well, anyhoo, politics is what I was trying to avoid here, so maybe we shouldn’t leave clues in our comments about those things to begin with. Right now we’re one for one, so let’s just leave it there, ok?

Built between 1900 and 1901, it would have relied significantly on coal fired steam equipment during the construction process.
