  • This is Wellingborough Zoo Park in 1969, the year before it was closed due to pressure from the RSPCA - the cages were dirty, old and inadequate. This film was passed to me from another local RUclipsr. I met with Dave Green (Station SixtySeven) at the little R'ale house at Wellingborough station to take notes and get his account on this video. He states "In the film are my Mum and Dad, their friend Sue and her child Ian. My sister and me also appear, I'm the tot in the brown hooded coat feeding the black swans. Mum is the lady handling the fox. The fox was called 'Vulpe Vulpe' (the Latin name for foxes) and lived in a run at home with us. He was later released into the wild at Salcey Forest. The film was shot by Mick Allen at the request of my Mum and Dad".

I was 7 years old when I visited the zoo at wellingborough , even as a child I was aware this was not a good enviroment for animals.
    Great footage, thanks for posting.

My mum used to take me there, sadly now I find it quite heartbreaking that we caged these animals in this way, you can tell they are unhappy. Made me weep a little.

Yh it wasn't good by the end of it. Mr Stevens The Zoo keeper was really struggling by the end of its time. When it was good it was epic. But by the 60's it was done in my eyes.

Hi purple, I'm glad the zoo is no longer there. Protect the animals in their natural habitat. I went down the gardens last week and Brook was full of plastic bottles. went to kotch yesterday and couldn't find any rubbish anywhere😊also I received a message that Chester house irchester is getting 2 new iron bridges start date this June, to be built over the nene.

I know exactly where your coming from the place was so ran down. Now I haven't been to the Kotch for some time so I wouldn't know the state of it. But I do know the community is solid down the Kotch and in good hands.

Forgot to say, back in the 90s I worked with a chap at Higham Ferrers that used to work at the abattoir, he said he was responsible for "dispatching" the tiger from wellingborough zoo as it was too old to be moved elsewhere.

This is an amazing video Purple. Sad to see those animals in cages back when people didn't know much better but an amazing look at Wellingborough history. So impressed you managed to find that and put it together.
I'd love to see a top down map of how the zoo used to look. Have you ever seen something like that?

Sorry, but people did know better, anyone with empathy knows that being locked inside a cage isn't nice.
If nobody didn't know better, then they would still be open.

Absolutely but as for the noise. I believe the trees would have created a sort of barrier which decreased the noise level.

Hi Dave you cant make that up. remember the chimps tea parties too. when i go to croyland gardens now it all seems too small to cram all those animals and birds in. The tea room was great on sheep street too, next door and the fish and chips at the bottom of the road was the best including masses of scrumps. the odd bits of batter.
