Last season in which the Southern 500 was held on Labor Day Weekend before going through an 11 year hiatus and returning to its' rightful spot on the schedule in 2015. Now the Southern 500 is one of the most sought after tickets and has more meaning than it did from 1950-2003. Last season for Pontiac, last season with Unocal 76 as the official fuel of NASCAR before Sunoco took over in 2004, last full-time season for Bill Elliott, and first season that Gibbs fielded Chevrolets since 1996.

2003 would turn out to be a rain plagued year. The spring Darlington and Talladega races were under threatening skies, the Coke 600 was rain shortened as well. Dover the week after also had a delay, and the fall Atlanta race didn’t finish till Monday.
Michael said what Al Unser Jr said after the 1992 Indy 500. “ you just don’t know what Indy means “. Serious nostalgia there. Daytona is Indy to NASCAR. 54:26 DW and the Vortex theory 😂😂. 4:09:06
Coming up on the 20th anniversary of this race. Of the 43 starters, only Kevin Harvick is still full time in Cup, but that will change at the end of 2023. Besides Kevin, Joe Nemechek, Dale Jr., Todd Bodine, Kurt Busch and Greg Biffle ran or attempted to run a race in NASCAR's top three series. Jimmie Makes a return after a two year hiatus. Tony Stewart, Michael Waltrip, Ryan Newman, Bobby Labonte, Matt Kenseth and Super K Ken Schrader have run SRX, along with the Biff. One driver, John Andretti, is deceased. Several others including Blaney and Robby Gordon run in other series. Ward Burton, Jeff Burton, Dave Blaney, Joe Nemechek and Bill Elliott have sons that compete in NASCAR's top three series.
last Daytona 500 win for Michael waltrip he could have had a much better racing career I mean he had enormous potential to drive like his brother and at least win one championship but he never did which was a shame he could have done so much better then what he did.
There was almost 6 sets of brothers from what i remember. Hermie Sadler, Brett Bodine and David Green all DNQ'd. Hope you're well and good. Looking forward to tomorrow's 500 (for some reason im thinking the SHR's cars are going to win).
Man. Everything about this period of NASCAR was its Zenith. Not the least of which is DW, Larry Mac, and co. You couldn’t have made a better broadcast team. Miss these days.
We need an aero package for gen6 cars which allows drivers to race like this. Man, 3 wide racing, a lot of lead changes. Gen6 cars ruined restrictor plate races... Even tandem racing was better.
This was the race that really ignited my Asperger's Syndrome/PDD-NOS/Autism/OCD when it comes to races going the distance. After this I made a wish that in 2004 that every point and non-points race in ALL three top divisions which then was (Nextel Cup, Busch, and Craftsman Truck Series) would go the distance. Meaning a season without a truncated event. Guess what? I got my wish on November 21st, 2004 when they crossed under the yellow flag to complete the 267th lap of the Ford 400 at Homestead as they got ready to have a green-white-checkered that pushed the event to 271 laps. I got a bonus six years later, because 2010 saw every race go the distance in all three divisions (point or non-points). Still today, my OCD is ignited if a crown jewel event, both Talladega races, and any race I attend are shortened. That means if the Daytona 500, Coca-Cola 600, COKE ZERO 400, Brickyard 400, Southern 500, GEICO 500/Hellmann's 500, and last year I had the unfortunate privilege of attending the truncated inaugural Xfinity Series race at Pocono back in June when only 53 of the scheduled 100 laps were completed. In 2017 I know it will go the distance because the June weekend at Pocono sees the best weather and the chances of a race getting cut short are slim. I mean, the race kicked off at 1:15 PM and it started raining at around 2:20 PM on a Saturday afternoon which is unusual at Pocono in June.
As an update, 2017 became the third season to have all three series have their non-points and points races go the distance. Three in fourteen seasons, you have to admit that is pretty cool! Unfortunately today with the stages of 60-60-80, the Daytona 500 is essentially the two Can-Am Duels and the ARCA race combined. The only upside to the stages at the 500 is that the race isn't official at halfway (lap 100), it's official at the end of stage 2 (lap 120), meaning you have an extra 20 laps to try and get the lead should weather become a factor.

27:10 This man was a danger. And he eventually killed a driver with his ego on the track. And STILL, they allow him to race. YES Tony.. YOU are irresponsible.
the racing at the start of this race was incredible, one of the most intense starts to a plate race ever
Back when I knew everyone in the field.great times

Tony Hawk: "No thanks."
This was the race that made me a NASCAR fan.
As of 2021 this is the shortest ever DAYTONA 500 race recorded.
And the second shortest is 2009.
It's amazing how much debris on that track but they didn't call caution lol
1:28:45 If you ever notice how much Chris Meyers Blinks when he talks , you can Never Unnotice it lol

"Labonte brothers and who else...?.... "Welcome back to Daytona! There are 3 sets of brothers in this race..." lol
The Wallaces and the Burtons. Mike, Kenny, and Rusty. And Jeff and Ward Burton.

My personal favorite DAYTONA 500 ever
+Sabastian Moore Really, your favorite is a rain shortened race?
rks29 it might be because it was Michael Waltrip's first Daytona 500 win without someone dying

Or how about this years 500? Three wide for the lead with ten to go what else can you ask for
by a lot of lead changes you mean 11 of them
We need that 2010 package.
That shit was the bomb
I loved how the Pontiacs looked that season they were mean looking
