    After I uploaded the 'Making a Custom Knife for the Antarctic Research Mission' video the other day, a few people on Reddit had questions about how Kydex fared in extremely cold temperatures.
    I've used my knives in temperatures down to about -15ºC, but my customer in this case is expecting to see temperatures down to about -30ºC, so some more testing was required!
    I was fairly pleased with the results overall. The retention and fit of the sheath were unchanged all the way down to at least -40ºC. Kydex definitely gets more brittle at those temperatures, but you would have to subject it to some fairly serious impacts before that actually became a problem.
    For extreme-duty service in extremely cold weather I'd likely start recommending a leather sheath option, but for regular use my opinion is you'd be just fine with Kydex.
    Materials and tools used in this video:
    Dry ice is normally available from places that also supply industrial gasses. Look in your area for suppliers like Praxair, Camcarb and so on.
    Infrared thermometer: amzn.to/1t1oTWE
    Ball peen hammer: amzn.to/13vjrqB
    This video was filmed using the Panasonic Lumix G6 w/ 14-42 Vario X lens: amzn.to/1vzonRT

      I did some testing around this at the same time, just didn't want to show the sheath as it wasn't one of mine. The leather was still flexible even at below -40ºC, didn't seem to have any issues.

      For the record I still think Kydex is still a very good option for 95% of use cases, you'd have to wail on it pretty hard to get it to break. For military customers though I think other options would need to be explored.

    The kydex held up better than I thought it would, a heck of a lot better than the vinyl used in truck seats anyway! The coldest I've ever been out in is -38°F, not including windchill, and the seat in my truck broke like it was made of glass.
    BTW, have you ever thought about doing a shop tour video discussing what tools you have, about what they cost and why you chose them? I think that'd be interesting!

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  9 лет назад

      Hey mate! -38ºF is COLD! I'm surprised the truck seats failed like that though, maybe a combo of UV exposure and the cold?
      I plan to do a shop tour soon, not sure when exactly though.

    Thanks Aaron...Great add-on video. Kydex is only rated to -20°F (-29°C) per ASTM Testing (www.kydex.com/uploads/files/kydex_tb_121-b_minimumservicetemperature_061412.pdf) which means it probably has about a 15-20% buffer. I think your tests were much more severe than a notch test and definitely higher than a ASTM Impact test but may have been a bit more worst case real world. Wind chill down there can reach to -70° or lower and prolonged in those ranges would definitely effect it. Personally I would think your sheaths would handle most of it based on your 24hr soak and the spring retention you still achieved and is a testament to your forming and fabrications methods! How about the scales and glue? Thanks for addressing this!

    • @mattburkett9419

      pjsalchemy wind chill only effects living things. It is a measurement of wind flowing over skin causing evaporation.

    • @pjhalchemy
      @pjhalchemy 9 лет назад

      ***** Gough Custom in affect correct, only because the object cannot go below the ambient, but at what ambient might this person have to be in? The problem for humans is the metabolism trying to compensate. Sheaths don't have a way to compensate and therefore move to the extremes of their tolerance very quickly because of wind chill which can create other issues for the material. Also there are "living things" down there that have adapted metabolisms to survive the extremes of that environment.
      The definition clearly states objects as well as living organisms: "a quantity expressing the effective lowering of the air temperature caused by the wind, especially as affecting the rate of heat loss from an object or human body or as perceived by an exposed person." It's about heat loss at the surface from the wind effectively drawing heat from the object/human. The physics of it (convection) is real however we Perceive it as humans. Antarctic mean temps range between -13ºC to -57ºC from the coast to the south pole.
      The Kydex sheath is a thin material and depending on where its kept, how rapidly it will equalize to ambient based on the formulary for wind chill, what ever that is, and will be exposed to a rapid change in temp and states of stress if exposed to the limits above. I thought Aaron's tests were quite valid considering he doesn't have a full blown ASTM lab.

    • @mattburkett9419
      @mattburkett9419 9 лет назад

      Fair enough, the rate at which the kydex cools could theoretically have an effect on its integrity, however, his tests lowered the temperature far faster than ambient temperature is capable of regardless of wind speed. In the case of objects, calling it windchill is highly misleading, as in this case its simply convection, whereas windchill is really specifically about living tissue. The perfect example for this is frostbite, in order to get frostbite the temperature has to be below 32* F because frostbite is tissue freezing and dying, but even if the ambient temperature is higher than 32* F frostbite can occur of windchill is below freezing. If we don't make this distinction we'll have people trying to tell us that air passing over a cars radiator is windchill. Not that I've ever had anyone attempt to convince me of that...

    • @mattburkett9419
      @mattburkett9419 9 лет назад

      TL;DR I agree, his tests were exemplary for the equipment he has and will prove more harsh than an excursion across the antarctic, unless the customer tends to use his sheath as a hammer...

      I id actually, just the sheath wasn't made by me so I didn't want to show it in the video. It was fine all the way down to -50ºC. I'm not a fan of a lot of leather sheaths because of the clasps/straps used to hold the knife in place. The scandinadian style molded leather sheaths seem very cool though.

      @StevanOutdoor 6 лет назад

      But lets be clear. I enjoy you did test the kydex. I enjoy you did test the steels in another video. I enjoy your video's and your knives. P&p to Europe is expensive and of course we have 21% tax to pay for American and Canadian products, so your knives are expensive for us back here in the old countries. In extreme cold conditions leather would be better but in basically all other conditions kydex is better. Leather looks prettier though.
      You see. The life of a knife enthousiast is not all roses. Choices have to be made. It feels like divorce sometimes. ;)

      What I would *really* like to do is to make the investment in having an injection mold made for producing my sheaths. That way I'd be able to make them out of a material like glass-fibre reinforced nylon which will be an order of magnitude tougher than anything I can thermoform in-house...

    Question: Is there any technical reason you didn't use a single kydex sheet and bend it at the back of the knife riveting just one side, or is it just aesthetics?
    Again, excellent work, congrats!!

      Thanks mate! I'm actually pretty decent on the marketing side of things too luckily, worked in that industry for quite a while. The main reason i use two sheets of Kydex is to ensure i can get the seams perfectly flush, i also want rivets on both sides of the sheath to allow for attaching belt loops and so on.

    I believe this is the reason that Fallkniven use Zytel sheaths. There was a fellow who had an interesting Channel that I used to enjoy that has since closed it down, who specifically did a video about this and indeed spoke with the owner at Fallkniven (whose sheaths get a little bit of ribbing for their looks from some people) and the owner confirmed that this fragility of kydex at extreme temperatures is the sole reason Fallkniven don't use kydex.
    However, as you clearly demonstrated, it took deliberate abuse for the sheath to fail and its functionality wasn't affected prior to the abuse.
    And yet, you can see why a company would not use kydex after this knowledge. For me, I would just be aware of this and take care of it, like any tool.
    And speaking of which I wonder how fragile the knife would be at this temperature; at -40c you should be looking after everything in my opinion.
    Take care
    Ben

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  7 лет назад

      I have continued to use Kydex for my sheaths because this testing showed that it was certainly tough enough for the purpose... Zytel would be better, but I think it's overkill in this case. The steel of the knife would definitely be more brittle in the cold, particularly down around -40ºC

    I wonder about the endurance of leather in this test, My presumption would be that it would not last as long in the same tests. I have seen kydex sheaths within ballistic nylon and perhaps the insulating value would protect the kydex more. Also knowing how poor ballistic nylon sheaths seem by themselves to be on most blades due to poor stitching but I do think it would fair better during your hammer test.

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  8 лет назад +1

      I think in the short term leather would hold up better, and in the long term probably worse... My guess is the leather would crack after getting deep-frozen dozens of times, but who knows!
      Ideally what I'd like to do in the future is have my sheaths made using an injection mold, as that will let me use stronger materials. Something like fibre-reinforced acetal or nylon would be amazing!

      Interestingly I am told the next greatest sheaths will be made from pineapple fiber of all things. From what I am able to Discern is has almost identical traits to leather but much higher reported resistances to heat and cold. I will be curious if the traits work as advertised.

    both kydex and leather gets brittle at temperature down and below -30
    some zytel (nylon alloys) are designed for those conditions
    thanks for sharing!

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  10 лет назад

      I did some testing with leather on the same day as I made this video, it was fine all the way down to -50ºC, showed no sign of becoming brittle...
      It might be a different story if the leather had gotten wet somehow, but dry leather certainly seems to be fine with low temperatures...

    I apologize if this question was asked before, what affects does the extreme cold have on the steel and G10?

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  10 лет назад +2

      It shouldn't have much effect on either of them. The steel is chilled down to -75ºC during the heat-treatment process which helps avoid potential issues with the steel at low temps later. The G10 is very strong and fully supported by the handle, I also don't believe it gets brittle like the kydex does. In short the blade and handle should be relatively unchanged even at the low temps.

  • @Andersss
    @Andersss 10 лет назад

    Craig on the Crawling Road channel tested Kydex, Zytel and leather sheaths in freezing conditions, but not extreme temperatures like you've done. Your test is good, but it doesn't consider moisture. watch?v=6LhBfUbPtfs

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  10 лет назад +1

      Yeah I watched his video a few days ago. I replicated his tests with one of my sheaths... Because the fit of my sheaths is so close it definitely causes issues if the sheath is full of water and then frozen. That said the sheath does drain well so you have to work a bit to get it full enough of water, I had to hold it sideways to prevent it draining before I froze it. It's definitely something I'll be taking into account when redesigning my sheaths in the future, but for the moment I think it's ok.
      Pretty crazy all the stuff that ends up going into making a knife/sheath!

    • @Andersss
      @Andersss 10 лет назад

      Gough Custom Indeed, love watching your videos!
      Yes, the more I think about it the more I realize that kydex-sheath is probably good enough 99% of the time. If you have extremely low temperatures you probably don't have a lot of moisture anyway.. I'll try putting a Kydex-sheath through a Norwegian winter and see how it fares, should be about the same as your Canadian winter.

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  10 лет назад

      And I tried the water & freezer test with one of my knives again last night, but this time instead of forcing the sheath to retain water by holding it sideways, I held it upright and let it drain like it actually would if you were getting rained on while it was attached to your belt. I put a bunch of water into the sheath, but almost all of it drained out straight away, even with the knife in there. Then I froze the blade again. This morning I tried it and it popped right out with no problems, barely any harder to remove than normal... So I think that even with my close fitting kydex design you're not realistically ever going to get it glued in there by frozen water, as the water drains out well before it would have a chance to freeze.

      ogilvy85 I've done some informal testing at high temps (55ºC)... The retention of the sheath is definitely lighter, it would be fine when used normally on a belt, but I wouldn't want to have the sheath upside down in those climates. I haven't done high-humidity testing, I don't imagine that should affect the sheath itself though.

      I agree that -40ºC is cooold. I'm an aussie, but I live in Canada now... Have been out in some pretty low temps. Down to -15ºC or maybe -20ºC it's ok if you have good gear, lower than that can start getting uncomfortable! Would temperature extremes as low as this permanently affect a knife's temper? (After letting it return to room-temp before using it, of course.)

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  8 лет назад +1

      +HipposHateWater No, it shouldn't have any effect. It is possible for it to have an effect, but it's very unlikely for any knife that was properly heat-treated.

    • @paralogia
      @paralogia 8 лет назад

      +Gough Custom At -50-60f (-45-51c), the blade would become more brittle. I am sure it would have no effect on the temper, but if used at that temp. for a while, there is a good chance the knife could be damaged. Probably not from cutting branches, etc. but I would not use it to pry open cans unless you had too. Of course, at the temp. the can is frozen solid already and the contents are coming out of the ruptured can.

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  8 лет назад +2

      +paralogia Yes, low temperature embrittlement is unfortunately impossible to avoid in any hardenable steel... Even a low of engineering steels will be much more brittle at very low temperatures!
      The knives should be fine for preparing food, butchering game or whatever but I wouldn't use them for chopping or prying at those temperatures, that's for sure. Opening cans likely wouldn't be a good idea either as you said!
      This issue can be remedied somewhat by making the knife blade much thicker, but I don't like to make knives that way, I prefer to make them thin so they perform well!

  • @redmunkee

    Hey Gough, got any injection molded kydex to run through the same test? Incog uses that process to manufacture their holster, and state that injection molded kydex has the advantage of no degradation to resilience over heat pressing kydex on to the object that it will be used with. Just wondering.

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  10 лет назад +1

      I actually don't have any on hand I don't think. I'd love to do an injection molded sheath, just don't have the gear right now to make the molds. That will change next year so it will be something I likely try out!

    • @redmunkee
      @redmunkee 10 лет назад

      I feel silly, I just remembered that unpressed kydex basically has the same resilience as injection molded. So in case you were wondering if injection molded kydex would hold up better, you can just do the test on a raw sheet.

    Interesting test Aaron. I hadn't spotted this when I made the post on the forum. I think we could safely say that day to day stuff would not cause the sheath to break. Only a 2 month spell in those temps would tell if it would cope long term. I suspect it would. It would be interesting to see if Kydex have any data on it, or maybe see if they're interested in your test? You might bum some free Kydex off them! Graham.

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  10 лет назад

      Hey Graham! In the long term I'm likely to start looking at other sheath materials like zytel. I'm actually considering whether I should be looking at building an injection molding machine so I can make 1 piece molded sheaths, that would certainly open up the possibilities!

    • @GrahamOrm
      @GrahamOrm 10 лет назад

      ***** Leather is nice, but I don't much like the fact that you have to use retaining straps, as they're always getting in the way when you're unsheathing or resheathing the knife... I do plan to sell the knives commercially, I do already in fact although the volumes are very low. My hope for next year is to improve my production methods fairly substantially in terms of efficiency and consistency.
