@@jonathanwilson9186 Looks like their servers are down temporarily to move data around, check back in a day or two.
Is that a Australian accent you have there mixed with an American one
Would you make a custom sheath for my buck 119?
Thank you for this video. Even though it's 7 years old its still a great tutorial for someone that is getting into working with kydex.
Im stunned by the almost robotic perfection in the way you make your knives and sheaths. Brilliant.
Thanks mate!
@@GoughCustom
Kydex is for rookies! I am returning the leather ... Kydex has scratched all my blades that came with it as standard. Some expensive blades now have Kydex damage !!! I wish blade manufacturers would give you a choice between Kydex for kids or a leather sheath for all blades over $200 ... the leather would be an optional extra (higher cost) ...
He's Mark Zuckerberg's son..
@mathew howard unless your steel is softer than kydex the scratches must be coming from other contaminants, ie. dirt, sand, etc. i made the mistake of not cleaning my kydex off before making my first few and abrasive dust from my grinder and other steel dust made its way inside and was putting scratches on my knives. once i started cleaning my sheaths and giving them a rinse now and then i haven't had any issue. just my experience tho.
@@GoughCustom After 4 years I've ended up back here on this video and I would like to make a few observations:
I now own a Gough Custom Knife, and it is utterly superb.
It is without doubt the most reliable knife I own, because I can trust the manufacturing process, the heat treat, design and materials.
I initially thought there was a slight defect with the kydex sheath and emailed them. Gough replied, and precisely explained the indent I was referring to, why it was deliberate, and the precise function it served. There is nothing on this knife or sheath that is "accidental" or a "manufacturing flaw".
If you want a 100% reliable knife that you can take to the desert OR Antarctica, and you need to know you can trust completely, well this is 500 Canadian well spent.
As for the argument about Kydex versus Leather sheaths ... Im a fan of both, but neither is "best", even though I love leather sheaths in a temperate climate.
Leather sheaths work best with stacked leather/wooden handles. You can slather your sheath with all kinds of lovely oil/wax treatments, and if they hit your handle, they soak into it and preserve the handle too! Its a lovely Scandinavian virtuous circle.
Kydex sheaths work best with synthetic handles. Where you only oil the blade, and you DONT want oils on your handle because they will only make it slippery.
Setting my personal preferences aside, the Gough Custom knife and sheath, will not rot in the jungle, will not fail at -30 degrees, and if I had to bug-out tomorrow and only take one knife from my collection with me, it would be that one. And when I said that, I winced from the realisation of the knives I would leave behind.
Gough makes perfect knives, at precisely the specification he advertises, and they are worth every penny.
My first sheath made with your instructions and it looks perfect, without any flaws. You cannot make it wrong with this guide. Many thanks
That's great to hear! Really glad you found the video helpful!
I’d really like to thank you for sharing your considerable talent and skill with those of us who have a genuine interest in doing this for our knife collection.Having to ship off a knife to have a kydex sheath created is simply unthinkable for me especially living in Canada as the border crossing has developed into the Bermuda Triangle of knives.Again thank you for your kindness ,you’ve given me one more way to enjoy my blades
Did you add the drain Aaron? DID YOU ADD THE DRAIN?
Haha, hmmm.... I think so?
Yan Doroshenko k
I want to know how many times you DIDN't put in the drain skewer before you wrote that on.
Probably at least 6-7 times!
Where you been? Last video 10 months ago?
Hi Aaron, I've been binging through your videos and I just wanna take the time to thank you for all the great information and effort you've put into your work. From the things I've learned, you make bladesmithing very approachable for beginners especially those on a budget. I look forward to more videos. Keep up the great work!
Awesome mate, really glad to hear that! Thanks for the feedback!
There's an elegance to your videos that aren't found in other tutorials, almost relaxing to watch. Those blade scales though... 10/10, perfect.
Thanks very much man!
I appreciate you guys that spend time teaching and go over every little step. You and Red Beard ops are my favorite channels.
I love that you added links for all materials, shows that you care about us a community and you want to see us succeed! Great sheath, some day I'll have one of your knives and a sheath to go with it!
Thanks Brandon! I hope the materials list is useful! I'll look forward to making a knife for you!
As an another (humble and less experienced) knifemaker i love to watch your videos for the calm precision you work with and the consistency of your results, which indicates the amount of time you spent trying different solutions and perfecting your procedures. Your approach is very scientific, totally dig it. Great work, keep it up!
Thanks very much for the kind words Luca!
really satisfying man, enjoyed it
Thanks mate!
Your videos are the best. Your attention to detail and giving exact information is great
Knife and sheath look perfect!
Awesome job Mr. Gough!
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Excellent Aaron! Enjoyed the video and very good information in the section below. Keep up the great work my friend.
Thanks mate, will do my best!
Awesome work, never thought you put so much effort in your knives.
I wish you the best of luck here from Germany for you and your store !
Thank-you very much Vithia!
@@GoughCustom that's a long time ago :) Glad you still doing knifes 👍🏻🔥
I had no idea just how easy kydex sheath making is, this is real cool. Ive just ordered some sheets and the foam. I still love leather sheath making and will continue that, but my goodness this looks nice. Thanks
I really enjoy watching your videos, your descriptions and instructions are always so clear and concise. Fabulous stuff. Best regards!
Very glad you liked the video mate!
very therapeutic to watch you do this, even though I don't make knives lol
Thanks Jack, glad you liked it mate!
Very good video I especially liked the press you made. Had a pretty good chuckle at "Did you add the drain". I have an old drinking buddy in new Hampshire that is a smith that adds three drain holes at 90 degree increments to each other on his D2 hunting knives. I had to ask him about it because I didn't see the purpose but some folks prefer to wear a blade sideways across the belt. Some to look tacticool I suppose but others find it less intrusive. Having just bought some smaller EDCs I'm kinda leaning that way myself as they are more comfortable than my bushblades to carry around because they don't dangle like a tumor.
'Scout' carry (sideways carry) is definitely getting more popular. I would like to make a mounting option for my sheaths so they can be carried that way soon!
I think most of the time when I see it comes with a configuration for both by twisting the mount in different 90 degree locks. Not sure how that mechanism works.
what was the bucket under your belt sander full of?
Great vid
It's just full of water to help catch dust.
The art of the build! VERY nicely done, well paced and easy to follow. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful mate!
That belt sander is amazing. So smooth and precise.
The fact that you replied to every comment is stunning brother your work is amazing.
I have a channel called (esta Manuel leather) and I hope I get half as a good as you
Thanks very much mate! It takes time but I think it's worth it to interact with lovely folks like yourself! Hope you're well mate, best of luck with your work!
Gough Custom same to you my brother stay safe
I've never had experience with it but kydex seems really satisfying to work with.
It can be very nice when everything is working! When something is not going quite right it can be very frustrating to work with!
I cannot emphasize enough what a help you are to beginning knifemakers, Aaron. Vids like this are huge. Mad respect for the crispy clicking sound you’re getting upon retention. I’m 10 sheaths in, snd still can’t replicate it!
Yours sounds like the shutting door of a luxury lexus sedan. Mine sounds like a honda civic door. Cheers! 👍👍
Really glad to hear my videos have been helpful mate! A big part of getting the best 'snap' is actually in the shape of the handle itself!
I love the editing of this video. Very concise!
Thanks Ben! Glad you felt it was concise... This video is a little longer than I generally prefer, but I couldn't really cut it down any more!
Great video as always thanks for making it.
No worries at all mate!
You are a great instructor.
Thanks very much!
excellent! thanks for sharing!
No worries mate!
Probably one of the best videos out there on kydex sheath making. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
i have lots of hobbies that have come and gone... but the power to create wonderful projects from such knowledge lives on and on... tyfs
great vid! I love watching your How-to tutorials.
Thanks very much!
hey buddy I've just started making kydex sheaths and my rivet setter is junk where did you get yours from? great work awesome videos
Hey mate! I got mine from KnifeKits.com, there's a link under the video!
Brilliant thank you 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Can I get a custom one made?
Love the styling and esthetics of your knives.
Thanks man!
This is simply THE BEST such video that I have found. Thank you so much for posting it for us.
No worries, glad you liked it!
you ever drop the sheathe into the catch bucket of water while using the sander? I bet that's fun to fish out lol
I don't think I've every dropped a sheath, definitely dropped blades and a ton of other stuff in there though!
Otium Borealis that would defeat the purpose of the bucket in the first place
Dude your videos are awesome do u still make them?
+Keel1ox yep, will be posting more soon!
GREAT!
I just want to stop by and say thanks for all you've done to help the new knife makers out there including myself. We would have a much harder time if it weren't for people like you!
+Bryan R thanks very much Bryan! Glad I was able to help!
Great video, I appreciate you're willingness to share the information
Gough custom still in business?
+MrZimma frame yes sir, just very busy!
THAT CAME OUT GREAT,BUT HOW DO YOU WEAR IT. NO CLIP OR BELT LOOP.
That's exactly what I was thinking ..."What do you mean, that's it?!" lol
Hey guys! There is a link under the video to a short tutorial showing how I make my belt loops!
Extremely well made, informative, and entertaining video. Awesome job!
Thanks very much William!
What a masterpiece. Thank you for such detailed and great tutorial.
Thanks very much mate!
Your accent is confusing me. It keeps going from British to America. Good video tho
Or is it New Zealand? I don't know accents very well.
+Kelly Green He's up in Canada
Hey Kelly! I was born in Australia, but moved to Canada about 10 years ago!
Thought so. Best wishes from Victoria mate. Bloody brilliant work, I’ll be ordering one if I’m lucky enough in the queue. Cheers.
@@GoughCustom now I understand
That is some top-shelf stuff Gav! Such precision and a perfect fit with tools we all can acquire. Great video skills too, not a second wasted.
Thanks 👍
You made this look so easy. This video will be my guide for when I start making sheaths for my knives. This was awesome. Good job!
Thanks mate! Hope the video is helpful!
I really *LOVE* your workshop! So clean, structured and so many useful tools... A dream 👍
Love your knifes and the sheaths too!!!
Thanks very much mate! The shop is a lot messier at the moment as I just moved again, but I can't complain as having a space like this is a real dream for me! One day I hope to have a farm kinda property with some land so I can build my own shed there and have it close to the house, but for now I'm very lucky!
@@GoughCustom sounds great! Hope your dream come true 😊👍
looked at many video's for making kydex sheaths all very complicated but as with your knife making videos I've followed before, this is very simple and very easy to follow!! thank you.
Thanks Josh! Very glad it's helpful mate!
Thank you sir. I was considering having someone make me a sheath for a Gerber knife I have and thought I would see what was available on RUclips for a DIY Kydex sheath. Yours is the first video I watched and learned everything I need to know to get started. I am a RUclips addict, and I can assure you, it is a rare thing to get enough information from the first video reviewed that no further research is required. Again, Thank you sir.
Really glad the video was helpful mate, thanks for the kind comment!
perfect!!! I have my bevel jig setup and found the sweet spots, about to heat treat and put a handle on it....this came at the perfect time, thank you
Sweet mate! Glad the timing worked out!
Thanks so much for all your detailing and supply information. Often time we get diy videos but not much information where to find the materials you have not only provided us with great information but also where to find what is needed.
Thanks for the feedback Cesar! Really glad the video was helpful!
Thank you very much! as usually the clearest tutorial out there! I understand you are in the Toronto area... my year in Canada is running out... up in Bobcaygeon, North of Peterborough! Making a living carving with axe and knife, doing custom leather gear, making knives and custom sheaths! can´t thank you enough for your help! cheers
Thanks mate, very glad you like the video and I hope it's helpful!
Very rarely do I watch a how to video and have all my questions answered, but you did just that. Excellent video!
+MidwestFirecraft awesome! Cheers mate!
Fantastic work Aaron. You set the standard.
Thanks Russ!
That was sheer bliss to watch you work! Great stuff, super satisfying and a great job in the end buddy! Love the knurling idea too 👊🏽😎

That's a terrific looking sheath in the workmanship, cut and lines. I was really impressed.

Thanks for this video!!! Now I can make holsters for all my edc items!! You’re the man!
It is a real pleasure to see you work.
Thanks very much mate!

+Shane Smyth glad you like the video mate!
You have no idea how much I learn from your videos! Thanks! A lot!

Excellent video as usual with good explanation of each procedure. I always enjoy watching your videos and hope you will find the time to make some more.

Glad to hear mate!
Really nice work and a great tutorial. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome make. Love the finish, both the product and the video.
Thanks very much mate!
Thank you Aaron, I found this to be very educational and enlightening. I'm looking into making my own kydex sheaths as I live in Australia and find it very difficult to find "kydexers" that are either local or do not require me to mail my knives to them for fitting. I am a huge fan of your work and hope to one day give you some business by means of one of your Resolute MkIII! Best of luck in your future endeavours and keep the great vids coming.
Thanks very much for the kind words Geoff!
great tutorial! Concise without skipping any steps.
Thanks mate!
Every finished knife I see come out of your shop is exquisite. I'm gonna have to order one sooner or later.
Thanks mate, glad you like my work!
If you ever endeavor to make a folder, I'll be first in line for sure.
This was really very helpful, thank you
This is a fantastic video pal, very informative and detailed. Been looking for a heavy duty solution for one particular knife and this might just do the trick. Thanks for posting, really appreciate the how to steps
No worries mate!
Fantastic craftsmanship. Excellence!
Thanks very much Joseph!
Had to subscribe, this channel is GOLD!
Welcome to the channel mate!
Gough, this video was incredible. Well done, will be using this tutorial step-by-step to make my first kydex sheath. Thank you!
No worries Will! Really glad the video is helpful mate!
Great job, I'm really glad to see a video about kydex on your chanel !
Thanks Vincent!
Great video, thank you. Love how you made a drain hole. Very simple!
No worries at all mate, glad the video was helpful!
Love the videos and the thought you put into your products. I wish my Resolute would have been here a little sooner. I went through a Buck and Kershaw knife while gutting my house thanks to the Louisiana floods. All is good, apparently it's time for another sharpening. Anxiously awaiting my Gough Custom delivery! I hope to take it on my son's first camping trip!
Thanks very much mate! I'm sorry you've had to wait for your knife... Working my butt off here to get it done, hopefully it will be ready soon! I will be sending out an email update soon when I get them back from heat-treatment.
Subbed, I LOVED this vid so much man. Genuinely interesting experience
Absolutely perfect! A true master of your craft, THANK YOU!
Thanks very much!
Great instructional video! Very well done.
Thanks mate!
Man im on my first year of knife sharpening with real interest. (hoping to move on to blacksmithing and metalurgy soon!) But i am so glad i came across your channel while looking into making sheathes! Keep it up bro!

Thanks Frank!
Great work bro. Thanks for the vid.
awesome process! thanks for sharing.
You're very welcome Paul!
Great video, really enjoyed your whole process
Thanks mate!
Thank you for this very helpful video. I had not idea kydex was this easy to work with. A lot less complicated than leatherworking it seems.
You make it look incredibly easy
Beautiful work, thanks for showing it.
Thanks for watching!
loving the "did you add the drain hole" reminder on your press :)
God just wow!!! I wasn’t looking to make a kydex sheath but after watching this video that all I want to make. Best video ever!!!
Great as ever bro. You don't remember me, but you already helped me before.
After 3 years, I'm finally assembling my workshop.
I warn you that I'll take your hints in consideration.
It's awesome to see what share and how much you progressed since the first videos and .
Thank you, very much.
Thanks for following along mate, it's great to get to share the journey with people like yourself!
Nice craftsmanship. And a great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks mate!
Awesome video, I’ve been seeing kydex holsters and sheaths for sale online but just figured out I could make them myself so I’m waiting on materials to arrive. One thing I don’t remember you covering (maybe you did and I missed it, I’ll be rewatching again anyway) is mounting a belt clip. If you’ve covered that anywhere else I’ll sure be looking.
You're a real master at your craft man!
Thanks very much!
I wish all tutorials on RUclips were this good.
awesome guide! thank you!
Nice work and good explanation.
Glad the video was helpful mate!
wow.
I have been watching knife making videos non stop for the last 3 days. I just found your videos. Your work looks more like surgery than metal work. Its fantastic. so clean. Even your work environment. its amazing.
Please keep making videos.
+Pure Heroine thanks mate, will do!
Great easy to follow video. Appreciate it!
