    "most people selling shits, they do fold-over shits", "most people that are buying the shits say they are more compact, but you know what, that shit is only a half-inch narrower than my regular shit", "even if you buy a shit and the guy forgets a drainhole, don't make a big deal out of it", "I always spray WD-40 into my shit"
    The best entertainment I've had for a long time lol

    They way you wrap the kydex around the end of the scales, but only just enough, is a great method. Good skills thx for the video.

    Thanks for the video! I know people recommend a silicone or WD40 oil, but I guess it depends on what you use your knife for. Since I mainly use mine as bushcraft/camp knives, I dont use any synthetic or petrolium oils at all (since I eat with it). I just render some uncured and unsalted pork fat, and use that as a cover all grease. The bonus is that my knife sometimes smells like delicious pork. It isnt the best for long term storage, but My knives never get stored long term. (also, dont use cured bacon fat, as it has salts and other additives not that great for metal, it's best to boil the fat so any salts go into solution with the water, you can then just skim of the top fat when it's cooled)
    If you just get a knife for the tacticool aspect, use what ever oil you want, but if you actually use it, it was recommended to me by our trail guide to stay away from toxic oils, and use animal fats instead. Hope it helps.

    FABULOUS! I love what you have made for the BK2 (my favorite knife). I also like the way you have folded the kydex for the neck carry/drain hole. Very cool. Kudos as well for pointing out the obvious weakness of a drain hole when using high carbon steel. I am a cheap bastard, and as such totally dig your nylon webbing carry options. Two thumbs up! I will keep watching. Cheers!

    Excellent work, those sheaths hold that BK2 in place like a skin. The part that is attached to the nylon strap (I'll call it the take off), that gets attached to the sheath is really an impressive piece of the kit. You have so many carry options, a really versatile, quick change around system. Good video, thanks.

  • @virtuovice
    @virtuovice 13 лет назад

    I love your thoughts on the mounting options, the no rust myth, the push out with thumb. The knife must be drawn out with one hand for emergency. And the knife must be retained in rough carry. Your sheath is satisfying the both very well. Anyway your shaping is well done and professional!! Please keep up!!

    thats exactly what i do pretty often. no actually using another product i mentioned in some recent video (cant recall the name now) made form lanolin that actually creates much tougher coat of food grade film that lubricates and prevents from rust. i think its called fluid film or something like that.

    I've seen a few people try to pull the knives out by holding the sheath with one hand and then when it flies out, they try and compensate for them pulling to hard and end up stabbing themselves in the hand holding the sheath.. I like the thumb way, kudos

    5.45 min in.. just a tip, i made a kydex plate thats reash higher up and made a belt loop of leather instead, then the knife doesnt tip as is does with the orginal belt loop. Its rock steady and you dont even haft to use the upper secure band.you got some nice knives martin sweden

  • @LRJ88
    @LRJ88 11 лет назад

    One great thing about having the drainage hole is actually cleaning the sheath from dirt, dust, sand and the like by simply flushing it through, not as easy without one.
    The thumb thing is pretty common here when it comes to people who know how to use knives but every time i lend someone else a sheath knife my heart skips a beat as they try to pull out the knife while holding the sheath and it pisses me off when they can't put the knife back the right way.

    My buddy at the station got a 1cm deep by 6 cm long gash on his hand when he tried to pull out one of our dive knives without using the thumb method. That BK-2 is such a nice knife, if i don't end up going broke getting a new camera i;ll have to look at getting one...

    @gavkoo there are 1/4" x 1" and 5/16" x 1"....the black ones are built differently than the others...they look a little more thicker...i have used the round punches before and all i did was polish up the cutting edge with some 15 micron abrasive paper...cut it like butter...i've never used the oblong one but i dont see why it wouldn't work...

  • @RenoLewis

    I have seen those type of sheaths on Blade Forums, and they are awesome! I must warn you though, leather working is very time consuming, and hard. Forming a kydex sheath in a press takes about 10 min, wet forming leather takes about a day in front of a dehumidifier (which we have), or about two full days to dry naturally. I agree that they look awesome, but for real world use, I prefer all leather, or all kydex.
    Just my 2 cents ; )

    Hey gav, Ive been making sheaths thanks to your videos and they're coming out great, just some have like a little play in the sheath, like at the handle retention its a little loose? Is that just the specific knife or am I messing it up?

  • @matthewhoward4549

    Kydex is for rookies! I am returning the leather ... Kydex has scratched all my blades that came with it as standard. Some expensive blades now have Kydex damage !!! I wish blade manufacturers would give you a choice between Kydex for kids or a leather sheath for all blades over $200 ... the leather would be an optional extra (higher cost) ...

    Gavkoo, how do you deal with dimensional differences between the BK-2's? I am having an issue where my Ratmandu may be thicker or thinner than someone elses I make a sheath for. I sent a sheath to someone for his RMD and he said he could not get his in the sheath, but the sheath fit my RMD perfectly. How can I fix this issue?

    Great video gavkoo. Lots of good common sense information here. I really like the BK2 sheaths you've done, they look top class. I think having the rivets both sides is very good, not just for mounting options, but for strength. If you ever end up doing stuff for Ontario's (SP43, SP50, RTAK II) please let me know. Actually this probably a big market for your Kydex, the knives are good but the sheaths basically suck.

    Hmm. The simple foldover sheaths /are/ marginally lighter, but I'm not sure by how much...that's the only real advantage I can see to them, other than compactness for a neck knife.

    It's also possible that the person is very sloppy with their draw, or the sheath is poorly made. A knife can only be dulled by a sheath if they are sliding the edge on it or something.

    Great to see that you got your BK-2! I really like the new sheath designs. Its okay if you use my name in your videos bro...I get more views that way: ) I'm just kidding: ) I agree with you on the fold over vs pancake sheath. I used to prefer fold over, but now that I saw the sheath you made me...I am a total convert: ) lol Can't wait for it to get here. I have already made my leather belt loop for it, and I might try to hot wax it. Hot waxing makes it pretty much weather proof, and really hard.
