Making a mini fixed-blade knife

- A while ago I wanted to try making a new style of knife, with a new style of CNC process and the knife in this video is the result! A knife made just for fun, this let me stretch my legs a little by trying out a completely different method of CNC knifemaking!
This video covers CAD design of the knife itself, as well as setting up and programming the toolpaths using CAM in Fusion 360. In fact it shows enough of the process that it will give you a very nice introduction if you've ever wanted to learn more about how the CNC process works!
I also show hand-finishing using mold polishing stones which are the best kept secret in knifemaking! I will be making a separate video about these stones sometime soon!
Hope you enjoy the video! If you have any questions let me know in the comments!
-Aaron
The polishing stones I show in the video are 'CS-M' grade stones. I use the 1/4x1/2" size and I buy mine from MoldShopTools.com, here's a link to the right ones: www.moldshoptools.com/catalog...

A lot of people have asked about the polishing stones! I will be making another video covering them in more detail soon! In the meantime

Gough Custom Thanks again!
Really appreciate the info!! ive been looking for those since I watched this. not sure what grits to get but I grabbed some 400 and 600 to try
I bought grits 240 thru 800, the one inch ones cover best. Great idea, thanks!
I buy the eBay edge pro stones, take off the plastic backing and have polishing sones for this. Super cheap and effective with many grit options available
This is the first video I've ever seen of yours. That's a fine little knife, very handy looking. I make knives by using the stock removal method, cutting and filing, and eventually it becomes a knife. I like watching the machining process, that was fascinating. 👍
You’re back! Right on and marvelous beard 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Haha, thanks bud! The beard just sort of happened, can't seem to keep it away! :)
Very Edward the 7th.
Gough Custom I regret to inform you that a beard such as that is illegal, containing that much sexual energy in such a small area is quite dangerous
@@S8tan7 haha I will shave it off this morning, sorry mate! :D
Why are you uploading so rarely? I love your videos and perfectionism! Workshop is perfect - super clean and tidy! If i will ever have one, I want it to look like yours :)
Thanks bud! The videos take a *long* time to make (this one took almost 5 days just of editing) and I have also been super busy so it's been hard to find time!
@@GoughCustom This guy from above brought me here and my mind is blown. Man, I could help you voluntarily with editing just so you could more make and share awesome stuff. Let me know if you would be interested at jakub@skylarks.io, I think we might find an aesthetic connection!
Glad you’re back! I’ve become complacent watching the “good enough”
knife makers!
Haha thanks Richard, I am glad you like my work!
I frigging love that design my obsession tells me I need this.......
Mr.Gough Thank you! That whetstone stick trick is a GOD SEND! As soon as I saw this video I scooped up a cheap $9 set from Amazon. Grit from 80 to 1000. They wear a bit quickly but you get more bevels done then you would with any sandpaper in HALF the time. They are a consumable but cheaper than sandpaper. Internet fist bump. 🤜🤛 👍
Really glad it was helpful mate! If you need better stones I get mine from MoldShopTools.com, I use the CS-M grade stones and they are magic! Sorry for the slow response! 🤣
@@GoughCustom Better late than never, right! 😆 Thanks for the link. I'm going to give em a go.
you got the best knive making videos on the internet
Thanks very much mate! really glad you like them!

Thanks Dan!
Great Aaron. Love it. Thanks for giving us more videos. Good to see you again.
Thanks very much mate, good to be back!
What a fantastic video and knife! I want to complement you on not being annoying or arrogant like *cough* some other maker on YT. Very concise and well edited. Thank you!
Thanks Rob, glad you liked the video!
It's really nice to have you back! I've learned a lot with you, I hope u keep it up! Thanks!
Thanks very much Jackson!

Glad you liked the video William! See you again soon!
I really enjoyed watching the design aspect of it and it turned out beautiful!
Thanks! I was hoping people would like seeing more of the process 'behind the scenes' when working with CNC, there really is a lot to do!

Thanks Dylan! It's good to be back! I'm hoping to post more regularly for the remainder of the year!
Digging that master chief drawing in the background.
Thanks bud! a good friend of mine drew that for me! If you get a good look at the drawing you can see the Chief has a Resolute in a sheath on his forearm! :)
Another simple but beautiful knife!
Thanks very much!
Nice to see you back! Great video.
Thanks Troy, glad you liked it!
Great to see you again Aaron, and thanks for the tip on the mold polishing stones 🍻

Superb as always Aaron - thanks 👌🏻🔪🏴
Thanks very much Mic!
I’d buy one right away. LOVE the blade shape. Also beard is killing it!
Thanks Jason! A lot of people seem to like the knife so I will have to look into actually making them for sale!
The level of finish right off the CNC is astonishing! Nice to see a video from you Aaron 👍👊🤘
Thanks bud! Yeah it's pretty crazy what the CNC can do when everything is setup right! It has taken me a long time to get it worked out, but it has been worth it!
@@GoughCustom makes all the rest of us handsanders really jealous. But again a cool knife! Resolute still my reference though. Great vid and thx for the mold making stones tip. Never thought of it
Simply amazing!
Thanks Marcos! Glad you like it!
It's really cool to see behind the scenes.
Really glad you liked it mate!
Great video! I like the looks of that knife as well.
Thanks bud!
Great to see you back. Have watched ALL of your past videos and enjoyed each and every one. Continue to be impressed by your process, how clean your shop is, your attention to detail, and the quality of your product. Awesome work! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the kind words Tony! Thanks for watching!!
Glad to see you again! Keep it up!!
Thanks Nicolas, will do!
Great video, super basic yet you explain a lot! Love it !
Thanks mate! Glad to hear it sounds like I hit the butter zone for the density of the information! It's a hard line to walk!
That last sentence you said is was I was waiting for! Can’t wait for more videos!!!
Thanks bud! Looking forward to making them!
Amazing process and knife ...
Thanks very much!
I literally jumped from my seat seeing you again! So hyped for more!
Haha thanks bud, glad to be back!
That bevel machining was super impressive. And doing hard milling is always impressive. And it's always cool seeing stuff be made in (basically) one op!
If you want more consistency, and less hand work, I feel like it would be better to mill all the way through the outside of the part, except for the tabs on the first op. This would also put the tabs all the way at the bottom instead of the center which means that the chamfer, assuming it is larger than the tabs, would hide the evidence of errors, so to speak. Of course you need it to be held while machining, so you'd have to drill and tap a couple holes in your fixture that you could put a couple of screws through the decorative holes, that way the part doesn't move during the chamfer. Or if you're lazy, clamp one side, chamfer the opposite side, M0, swap, repeat. The screwing or clamping would probably be needed for bevel machining as well so the tabs don't break. Maybe your way was less risky. /shrug
Great vids and knives man. Keep it up!
Thanks bud, I will do my best!
very cool,satisfying process
Thank-you! I agree!
Well that took some time. Glad to see you back!
Thanks Yan! Yeah this video has been in the making for quite some time!
Another great video .
Nothing like watching your videos knowing that I’ve got one of your knifes which is just perfect in every detail .
Thanks Grant :)
It’s good to see your work again.
Thanks Michael!!
Wow what a pleasant surprise to see you alive and well, Aaron! That's looks like a wonderful blade! I'm really looking forward to seeing some fresh content from you!
Thanks mate! :) Yeah it has been a while eh!
Another great work, I love how passionate and precise you are .
watching all your videos one by one .
I hope you make more content very soon. specially from your trial and errors on different materials and techniques .
Thanks mate! Yes I plan to make more videos soon! I have several lined up already!
That was so cool watching the cnc cut in the bevel!
Yeah that is one of my favorite parts as well! At least when it all goes right! :)
That’s beautiful!
Thanks Josh!
Man you do beautiful work! Love it man!!
Thanks very much mate!
Clean and beautiful knife
Thanks mate!
Love it! I could use one for sure!
Thanks bud, glad you like it!
Just awesome!
Great video, Aaron!
👍👍👍
Thanks very much mate!
Nice video). Glad to see you are back again and see that you are continuing to refine things in you shop. You should perhaps do an updated shop tour sometime.
Thanks bud! Next video will actually be covering my move to a new much larger shop!
As usual, ‘absolutely fantastic’ 👍😄
Thanks very much Kenneth!
I really appreciate all the explanations on this video - I've been hand-finishing commercially bought kitchen knives - remaking the bevels and edge to a lot more aggressive specs and your tips on how you finish your knives really validate what I've been doing. Amazing knife as always :)
Glad to hear mate!! Thanks for watching!
That is amazing and very impresive.
Thanks very much Marko!
Great video as always. Looking forward to more
Thanks very much Stephen!
Man that looks like hella fun!
It definitely was Walter!
I need me some of those stones, anything to speed up hand sanding is good in my book
Great to see you back again

I really like your approach to knifemaking and videomaking, you touch all the little details that make the difference
Thanks very much Ian! Really glad you like the video mate!
I remember those videos with your filing jig that most of us made at home and now with that CNC process. You are really good at whay you do. Keep it up with the great work and give us more videos!
Vicent Yi I made my first knife with that filing jig...it worked well.
Thanks Vicent, it has been a long and pretty crazy road! Hopefully I will be posting again in a month!

Thanks Sean! Yeah making a video definitely takes a lot of time, really glad to share it with you though!
Fantastic! Long time ago I made a knife using the jig you demonstrated! Cheers from Mexico!
Nice bud! Glad the jig was helpful!
Sweet knife and video
Thanks very much David!
Awesome! Cant wait to try these methods with my cnc!
Nice mate, I hope it works out well!
Gough Custom Crashed my $200 dollar bit into some hardened tool steel 👍👍😂 Time to order another and try again
@@nickolasr7270 Ouch! I use much less expensive tools and they work great, here's one of the tools I'm using in the video: www.maritool.com/Cutting-Tools-End-Mills-Finishers-Square-End-5-Flute-and-Higher/c78_79_80_131/p18004/.250-dia-6-flute-sqr-TiALN-carbide-finisher-.060R-.375-LOC/product_info.html
Good stuff Aaron. What an elegant blade. Been following you on social medias for a long time. It’s been so cool to see your development from doing pretty much everything by hand, to now, being able to produce these fine blades on your own CNC machine. Stoked!
Thanks very much mate, glad you like it! Really cool to get to share the journey with you mate!
Excellent! Can't wait to see your take on folders ;)
One day! A folder has been on my mind for a long time!
@@GoughCustom do it please ☺️
