It will work in either direction IF you adjust the intake "straw" to point in that direction. The intake is kinked at a probably 30 degree angle so if you point it towards the back of the cup it will work well when spraying upward and vice versa when spraying downward. You are correct in that your substance will need to be heavily watered down to spray consistently and evenly.
I did not. I knew that I could and it would probably have worked a good deal better but I wanted to test it without watering anything down to make it comparable to the Alloyman corded model that I previously reviewed.
paint too thick, should add up thinner LOL😂, think of tincan spray paint consistency, how you expect that thickened soup will come out of even 2mm Nozzle... Just IMHO, No prejudice
You're not wrong, I definitely concur that thinning it would result in a much better performance. I wanted to see how it would handle un-thinned paint similar to how the Alloyman sprayer handled un-thinned paint. I think if you're willing to thin it out, this cordless model will work for you for sure.
I think to give it a chance, hold the sprayer horizontally. You had the bowl 1/3 filled, so the tube was not in paint !
Battery that way round so to can change it without removing the paint cannister when in use
Is it meant to work facing down or up? I assumed it would only work horizontally and watered down...

Did you water it down?

My Hammerdinger?, Was busted in the new box, yep i had to solder a wire to circut board & superglue busted plastic, now time to paint (hooray)
Bummer! I didn't have an issue with the function of the sprayer, just couldn't really spray unthinned paint with it.
faster to just roll it
