- I.Introduction
• Health care is a multitude of services rendered to individual, families or communities by the agent of health services or professions (Health personnel) for the purposes of promoting, maintaining, monitoring or restoring health.
• The goal of health care is health development / Health Promotion i.e. a process of continuous and progressive improvement of health status of a population.
II. Levels of Health Care
A. Primary Care
B. Secondary Care and
C. Tertiary Care.
A. PRIMARY Level Health Care
It is the first level of contact of individual, the family and community with national health care delivery system (HCDS), where primary health care is provided.
It is also called as an essential health care or health care at door step.
It provided at village level and through Primary Health Centers and their Sub-Centers through the agency of Health professionals.
At village level by:
- the Village health guide (VHG),
- Anganwadi worker (AWW),
- Trained Dias (TBA),
- ASHA workers and
- othercommunity leaders
At PHC level by:
- Medical Officer,
- Community Health Nurses (CHN)
- Health supervisors / Health Inspectors),
- Junior Public health Nurses (JPHN / Health workers) and
- others.
At Sub-centre level by:
- Multi-purpose Health Worker (MPHW - male and female) /
Junior Public health Nurses (JPHN)
B. Secondary level of Health Care
• The primary levels of health care settings or health agencies are not equipped with all the facilities and manpower to deal with more complex health problems.
• Hence, which require secondary level of preventive services, i.e. diagnostic, curative services and specialists consultations.
• These services are referred as secondary level care.
The Curative services are provided mostly at this level.
• The secondary level services are provided at
- Community Health Centers (CHCs),
- Taluka Head Quarters Hospitals and
- Sub-divisional Hospitals.
• CHC is a 30 bedded Rural hospital.
• In addition to that, CHC serves as the first referral Unit / level of health care from Sub- Centres and PHCs.
C. Tertiary level of Health Care
• The health problems which cannot be treated at secondary level care setting are dealt at tertiary level care setting.
• These institution serve as referral units for both primary and secondary level of care.
• In these institutions, the latest technology, facilities and super specialists, are made available.
• The tertiary level care is provided at
- District level,
- Regional level (State level) or
- Central level / National institution
It includes specialty hospitals, Medical College
Hospital and Super specialty hospitals.
