Mario Paint was literally the first game ever bought for me at 3 years old. I am pretty sure that fly game explains why I am a pretty good shot at FPS titles. And I had forgotten about the music maker. This game really was a very sophisticated creator tool for the time it was released in.
I just had one of those stress nightmares where i was 8 again having to beat that mosquito swatting game in Mario Paint with that mouse… *shudder*. Well, glad thats over, guess ill see what DGR Dave has uploaded today!
Mario Paint was a huge deal to me back in the early nineties. You could only save one animation at a time, but I hooked the SNES up to a VHS recorder to archive them that way. When I was twelve I made a 16-minute animated short using only Mario Paint, VHS and a simple sound mixer. Took forever, but I learned so much about digital visuals and I've later found out that so many illustrators and animators active today got their start with that crummy little mouse and even crummier mouse pad.
I remember being extremely excited over this game but when I finally got it, I quickly realized I had no creative talent so this program didn't really offer too much to me.
best part of art is there's no rules. some people think random lines on a paper is a masterpiece. even "an idiot" can make a genius level drawing with enough time.
My sister and I made an epic song and painstakingly wrote down the whole thing on a piece of paper. The next weekend we looked for it and our dad had thrown it away. What I wouldn't give to hear that song today. I loved Mario Paint. Didn't have much artistic talent at the time but that is not important with this game. Every kid draws and colors terrible drawings growing up. This is still an amazing game that arrived between the first 2 versions of Microsoft Paint in 92 (Dave said its 25 years old. It's actually 31 years old). It was perhaps even better in many ways than the Windows 95 version. Also I had forgotten about all the crazy colors and patterns. Thank you DGR for this trip down memory lane.
I used to love playing Mario Paint as a kid! I remember the track-ball mouse (it used to collect a ton of dust on the wheel and was a pain to clean) and I remember getting the guide book as a Christmas present. See, back in the day, they didn't have things like RUclips tutorials or fancy websites, so all the inspiration for this game had to come from books and the occasional magazine promo. My favorite thing to do in Mario Paint was recreate scenes from the Legend of Zelda using both the music editor and the animation feature. The guide book had a great tutorial on how to put the scene together. I used to love making all sorts of music compositions too. Ohhh, so many fun memories!
I would've drawn someone pouring white liquid from a cardboard carton into a coffee cup. A lot more intuitive than spraying an aerosol straight into your mouth (which could be a numbing spray, cheez whiz, or a number of other things).
I've had this game as a kid, and I was so gutted it needed the Nintendo mouse. I still put it in just to watch the demo video per say when you don't play it. Still was fun without the mouse. Hopefully I can get to play it one day.
OMG I'm the same boat. I was gifted this game by another person who was getting rid of all his SNES games, but never knew how to work this game, so I just watched all the demos.
I was born an artist and Mario Paint was my first experience with digital art as a kid. I quickly started using windows paint and now do all my work on a PC, all because of Mario Paint. Great game, thanks for showcasing it here DGR!
The only way to truly beat the fly mini game is to complete enough loops so that every square in the background gets a star in it. Otherwise it doesn't count. I did grow up with this game, saved a ton of money on coloring books and many other things I'm sure. Played the flyswatter game a lot, made lots of music, drawings, but I did make a mario flag animation back when I was a kid that I was super proud of. It's just a lot of fun and when it came out, much like the gameboy camera, was almost revolutionary for what a program or device like that could be capable of.
I grew up with this game and loved it. I spent many hours coloring, making custom pixel art and stamps, messing around with the animation tools, and most of all, making music! That was the best! I definitely have nostalgia for this game. When I recently got a replacement SNES mouse, the first thing I did (after not playing the game for probably 20 years) was boot up the fly swatting mini game to show my kids! They loved it!
Got this when i was 7. Lots of good memories, playing the fly mini game, coloring pre made draws and more, playing with the music creator mode (and i'm amazed people still charting todays on it, like Through the fire and the flame etc)
That was nostalgic city for me. Nothing like playing the silly fly swatter game to pass the time. Wow what a great game that was. Thank you for playing it a bit. Brings me back to when I was like 6 years old.
DGR ia better artist than me. All the people in the chat that are saying his drawings are bad are just jealous cuz their art can never be as good as DGR's
I wish I could've been there to point out Totaka's Song after the bomb explodes on the title screen. It's a hidden little ditty by Totaka whenever he works on a game as a musician so there's always some variant of it when you find his Easter egg.
I have so much nostalgia for this game! It was so great seeing you experience it for the first time. I made so much bad music back in the day on the music creator. 😅
Wow Super Mario Maker got so much from this game. Undo Dog, Reset Rocket, the pig stamp (idr if that was in the original SMM, or only in SMM2). Even the fly swatter game.
I've got no nostalgia for Mario Paint, but I absolutely love when people use its composer feature to make music or just play pre-existing songs in its sound font.
Ita funny to think that when this game came out, it was probably the very first time for a lot of kids and adults to ever have to use a mouse. Home computers still wouldnt have been quite as common place yet for several more years still.
Oh WOW!!! I messed around with this for couple hours on a couple different days, when my cousins from a days-drive away used to have it. Had more fun in the music than I did the drawing... But now that I use some digital-art programs as a hobby, it's surprising to see how robust this silly 'game' was... I even saw one row of options that had transparency patterns on it. :D Like, WHAT!!! On a Super Nintendo? They were able to give you so many choices. Wish I knew then, what I know now. I probably would have gone and enjoyed this program for many months... Then repeatedly come back to it in following years. ;) Also... Gingerbread Man - the word 'bread' (does in fact) = Ginger[spot where 'bread' was] Man Ginger Man ;)

They need to make an actual paint game like this again and give us a mouse. Used to rent this game as a teenager. Had so much fun
or they can recreate this game for computer and mobile
I intend. It's paint but much better
I mean the switch has a touchscreen, just make a Mario paint game that can be played with touchscreen on switch or mobile
