    Looks like you had a great trip to Japan! When I visited, I really enjoyed the cute deer in Nara, but they could sometimes get aggressive! The JR Pass was really handy as a tourist. I wish more restaurants used plastic food to help people decide what to order. People we met were friendly and eager to help as I did my best with Japanese phrases from a travel book, leaning upon intonations and phrases from the shows I watched. It's cute how they neatly wrap even small purchases, but I felt conflicted since it's kind of wasteful too. I hope to travel back sometime and enjoy more tasty food like okonomiyaki!

    I really enjoy Japan. Taiwan and Japan have a similar feel (from my western view) due to their shared past. In my neighborhood there is an old Taiwanese man and he even has a Japanese name! haha.

      oh you went to 大阪所。it's a nice place for sure, but the inside is all modern with diorama etc.
      Himeji Castle is the best, and it's inside is still like the old days. Incredible. If you ever have the chance, visit Himeji in the Spring.

    Grace, do you speak Japanese? When you see some Kanjis, do you happen to understand them?, I have been studying Chinese with your channel and some books and a little bit of Japanese also and I got surprised to see that lots of "Hanzi and Kanji" have the same meaning, of course the pronunciation is different but there are some similarities between them for example weather: 天气 and 天気.

    • @GraceMandarinChinese
      @GraceMandarinChinese  Год назад +10

      I only learned a bit of Japanese back in college, and I've forgotten most of it by now.🥺 However, when it comes to Kanji, I can sometimes guess their meanings, though I might not always get it right. It’s still fun to notice the similarities and differences! ☺

    • @SuAmazing
      @SuAmazing Год назад +2

      After Searching, a Chinese Native said that he would say that 70-80% of the time, you can either guess the meaning of the Kanji or the Kanji means the same thing
      And 20-30% that don't mean the same thing in Chinese or are uncommon/ out of usage characters that you are unfamiliar with.
      and some examples
      勉強
      Japanese : it means 'Study'
      Chinese: It means 'force yourself to reluctantly do something'
      手紙
      Japanese : letter
      Chinese : Toilet Paper
      我孫子
      Japanese : Abiko (idk if this means something in Japanese or if its just random kanjis that have a cool pronunciation)
      Chinese : My Grandson

      @@GraceMandarinChinese what is amazing for me is that even when Japanese, Korean and Chinese have the same origin I think (I am not sure, you know better than me), they evolved so now they sound so different, that is awesome and beautiful because that brought diversity, people like to travel to know other cultures that some centuries ago were the "same" people, and that happens also in Europe and of course America (the continent not USA like they say), diversity makes our existence interesting and colourful, thank you for the effort you put making your videos, we live in an era that never ceases to amaze me how we can be in contact anytime, it does not matter where we are, that was "unthinkable" some decades ago. In the last years here in Mexico lots of Chinese companies have been arriving, now we got Koreans, Japanese and Chinese people living here and also mixing with natives, I know some other countries are more cosmopolitan but I did not see this happening in the past here in my country, the world is so small but at the same time breathtaking, could not be more happy to be living in this era.

      @@Yo-cn3ncChinese, Japanese, Korean and also Vietnamese have completely different origins.
      But there was a very important cultural and linguistic influence on Japan, Korea, Vietnam. That's why these languages have a lot of vocabulary borrowed from ancient form of Chinese and used or still use the Han writing system. Furthermore, Korea and Vietnamese were colonies and vassal states of the Chinese empire.

      @@SuAmazing勉強 originally meant the same, force yourself to do something, I don't know where the ”study" part came but no wonder studying is such a pain😂 and in Osaka dialect we still use 勉強the original way like when we want a discount we say 「勉強してやぁ〜」and when the store discounts they say 「勉強しまっせ」
