    Today I was practicing sitting with distractions (food being the distraction) I was wearing socks on the hardwood floor and ended up slipping and falling. While I was down my dog decided it was a good time to break sit and go grab the food haha. Dogs certainly are opportunists.

    Been waiting for this a long time. Clients seem to want a sit stay. I'm in favour of teaching a down stay as dog is less likely to get up (unless they want to do competition or similar) Teaching the 3 positions first seems difficult for them so this short cut is great. They are always reluctant to loose the lure lol. Also the bit about not moving when giving release, I'll be watching out for that. thank you.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  5 лет назад +1

      So far for 15 years of my training career it's been reliable. The reason it did not work for you is because you weren't using reinforcers. You have to condition the reinforcers as you would condition punishers. If food you use is not a reinforcer the training does not work which is what you experienced. In that situation you have to switch reinforcers or work on conditioning the ones you use to be stronger.

    The click ends the behavior, according to what we were taught in the Karen Pryor Academy, so I don't repeatedly click during the stay, except sometimes when adding distraction. I do sometimes employ multiple treat delivery during the sit, depending on the individual dog. I do like the way you are instructing how to teach a release cue and I agree this is the best and fastest way to teach "stay".
    By the way, I know that some people, for example Chris Bach uses the click as a marker signal, not a marker signal and an end marker. Having learned her way prior to the Karen Pryor way, I can honestly say that both ways work, but it is important to be clear and consistent with the dog in training.

    Hi, you can try putting the new word in front of the old cue (ok) for a while and then drop the old cue.

    I use 'go free' The dog will begin to move with encouragement on the first new cue.

    Your videos are stellar! I have been devouring them, reviewing them over and over. I am on a wait list to get my puppy. (It’s been 12 years since my last dog passed away. He was super! I am now retired and can be home again to spend more time with a dog), so I’m preparing myself and our home for welcoming and living with our prospective canine family member. I can’t wait to implement your methods of training! You demonstrate so very well the superior approach (positive reinforcement) for training dogs, explaining the reasoning and getting results that make dogs and their owners happy. I have a question about the “Release” or “Free” cue. When released from stays in your other videos (that I have seen so far) and in this one, the attention of the dogs is still on you; they break their stays and they come close to you. Does your use of“Release” or “Free” mean they can break whatever stay position they are in wherever they are ( in a car, on the sofa, in a crate) in order to come to you, or is that just what they choose to do? When I had my other dogs, to release from a stay, I would always say their name and then give a cue, like ”Come,” or “Heel,” or whatever. “OK” for them meant they were released to do whatever they wanted (within reason), like run and play, or eat the treat. So I had more than one cue to release them from a stay position which was in and of itself was cued as “Stay” (after cuing down or sit). Did I make keeping a reliable position stay more confusing to my dogs by cuing stay (after giving the position cue), come, heel, etc.? Over my life I’ve just had well-mannered dogs (Norwegian Elkhound, Labrador, Rottweiler, and Standard Poodle) in my home in the past; I had never asked them for a prolonged stay (for one thing, I didn’t know how to teach it; also, their behavior was pretty mellow anyway). With my prospective puppy, who will be an Aussiedoodle, I would like to do obedience trials or perhaps agility trials, for fun. How should I adjust my Stay and Release cues for the most clear communication with my dog?

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 года назад

      Yes for me "free" is "come" for me "go sniff" or "go play" for me is they get to do whatever. I think that for obedience you should read what they prefer and train that for the competition. Saying stay really is not much of an issue I think in your case. Its more for new owners who will say "stay, stay, stay, stay" to their dog or train a down stay for so long that then when they say sit, and then stay, the dog might drop into the down as hes associated down with the word stay. But dogs can learn the "concept" of "stay" it just takes more time than sit means sit stay down means down stay and stand means stand stay. I use my own cue "wait" which is like the cue stay, when I want a dog to when learning a trick to stay in the position they are in.

    Just practiced this behavior with my 7 months old islandic sheep dog. Step 1 : ok. Step 2 : ok. Step 3 : anxious look from the dog : "why is she stopping to treat me, I am sitting nicely ?" Release cue : dog does't move and gets more nervous. I invite the dog to move, she comes to me and sits immediatly expecting more treats.
    Back to Step 1 until she starts barking her head off at Step 3, jumps at the table where treats are, and this is when I end the cession. Followed a long minute of barking which I ignored. I don't know about you, but everything looks so simple on youtubes, and turns out to be so difficult in real life :(
    Should I treat her food she doesn't looooove so much ?
    ps : note that we're practicing Leave it regularly.
    Emily, if you read this message, I am a great admirer of your work and I've come to think the greatest dog can't learn much with a poor trainer like myself :(

    • @herdingdrive
      @herdingdrive 10 лет назад

      You must have progressed too fast, dog became confused. Your timing for the click may also have been off by a fraction of a second, that's enough to confuse the dog.
      When IT doesn't work, you need to look at your delivery and drop criteria!

      thank you for your kind answer. We've done a lot of progress on the matter, can't really remember the chronology, but once she understood what it was all about, she started to remain still and calm. Now she stays down, while I'am 10 meters away, jumping and making a fool of myself, trying any possible word to proof the cue release cue. She nows quite well the release cue now, but broke the down when I said " hello Pakkun" the name of her best dog friend, that was tricky of me. Anyway, we're continuing adding the 3 D's. thank you again

    Hi! What would be the time frame for training this sit/down stay? For how long and how many times a day? I realize the time it takes to fully train the STAY varies from dog to dog, but curious if there's a general good pace and schedule for the steps? I.e. Step one - 1 week - 3x/day for 5 min/day? something like that? Or is that overly prescriptive? Thank you!

    You likely misunderstood what they were trying to explain. Any deaf dog can be clicker trained or "marker" trained. Just as Emily say's you can use a verbal marker, such as "yes", you can use a visual marker, such as an led light. Alternatively, a vibrating (not shock) collar could be used. An led light is much cheaper than a vibrating collar. The marker is only used at the beginning of training each behavior. Clear hand signals are then added as the cues for the trained behaviors.

    The release cue need to be fully trained on various behaviours like sit stand down crate etc? Or the dog generalizes the release cue to other behaviours himself?

    I love these videos and the Dogmantics courses I have purchased. Stay is something I have never really gotten, so I have a sort of dumb, rudimentary question about this.When you divide training like this into "steps", does that mean we should do all these steps immediately right from the beginning, or practice just the first step until the dog gets that part reliably?
    In other words, when just starting out, should I give the dog lots of treats for staying in sit each time I am able to lure them to sit? Or do you mean we should first train them to sit on command, until that part is reliable, and then later move on to lengthening the sit into a sit stay?
    It seems like the idea here is to make it so that the dog just learns that sit means stay until released, and that it would be confusing to teach sit without stay first. But I also have a foster right now who totally does not sit naturally in response to a lure. He's having a harder time with sit compared to most dogs I've had, and I'm worried that the stay and release part is making it too hard to understand.
    I have had similar questions on other videos, and I feel like it's a fundamental part of the method that I'm uncertain about. If you're able to clarify this, I would really appreciate it!

    I got a doberman at 1 year old. Initially I am told that dobermans should be trained with choke chain and punishment. I followed choke chain method for a month. But I can't go further with the method as I feel bad. Also my dog is not responding when I cant control him.
    Later I found your videos and very impressed about positive reinforcement methods. I tried no mugging, leave it, stay and loose leash walking. Nothing seems to be working with my dog. He responds for some time. He just ignore me other times. Even if I have high value treats, he just does whatever minimum needed to get the treat and immediately he goes and does whatever he wants. He always aggressively mugging, licking and biting my hand and food container. I tried hard to teach him "no mugging" but just minutes later, he starts to do the same.
    Some times I got very frustrated and stopped the training sessions and left him.
    But today I got very angry when he just did what he wanted to get food and stole some of food by nipping my hand.
    Suddenly I couldn't control myself and beat him and left him.
    Now I am feeling very bad and I started to think that he is not trainable. People say that 1.5 year doberman can not be trained.
    I need your advice on this. Kikopup, can you help me?

      I have a 2yr old Doberman. A prong collar is helpful especially when walking but i find that training him new things is best with positive rewards, clicker and food. Dobermans usually have a high food drive and will go to hell and back for a treat.
      Some good reading, leerburg.com/

      Why don't you try using a treat that is less simulating like carrot. My mum has a dog that will go crazy over food but carrot she will work for too but be less crazy over it. Never use a choke chain and never use a prong collar. The damage you are doing to that precious animal is wrong. Every time I see a prong collar, choke chain or shock collar I am disgusted. Just keep trying with your dog. Every dog can be trained. :-)

      My doberman goes nuts over carrots, even an empty cutting board. He is high energy. Be disgusted all you want. You clearly have no experience with working bloodlines

      I do actually. I have been a trainer for 15 years and have worked with a variety of bloodlines including Dobermans. I have no idea why you would be looking at Emily's videos if you were into prong collars. Her methods include no physical or psychological intimidation or abuse. Prong collars are abuse! My motto with dog training is: Do not do unto others what you would not do to yourself. I would love to see you post a video of you using a prong collar on yourself and lets see if you can endure the pain. All dogs can be trained without intimidation and abuse. You obviously have no experience in progressive reinforcement training.

      Clicker training bases on the dog offering behaviors. You need to be patient with the training, especially with a dog that has painful and bad experiences on being punished for doing the wrong thing. Dobermans are fast to learn, and active dogs, so do different training in the same session, just "stay" gets boring. Also good time for training might be after or during a good long run. Just 5 two minute sessions in the beginning.
      NEVER get frustrated or especially never use violence with the dog if you want them to trust you and respect you.

    I was just wondering.. quite a lot of your videos are with breeds known to be quite obedient. Do you believe same would be true for stubborn dogs such as Pugs.

      @billywig2 8 лет назад +6

      These methods will work on all dogs! The breed doesn't matter. You can even do this stuff with a cat! In fact, I've taight a goldfish to swim through a hoop using clicker training, I'm sure your pug can manage 😄

      I agree, these methods will work with any dog. the only difference is how long it'll take a particular dog to learn it. I have a bully breed mix and she's amazingly well trained now that I've switched to positive reinforcement training.

      pugs can be great service dogs, I have seen them do great things, just be patient with your dog and go at your dogs pace, but be enthusiastic. Good luck and don't give up.

      I trained a Donkey to back up on cue. I have also worked with cats teaching them to sit and such.
