Shapeoko Pro Assembly Overview

- NOTE: Additional comments/correction/built notes in description.
The Shapeoko Pro's assembly process has been vastly streamlined over that of the Shapeoko 3. Each step is compartmentalized in a box, letting you focus on one component or system at a time. This video will cover the required assembly processed for putting together your CNC router.
Comments/Correction/Built Notes:
- In some cases the Y1 port on the control board should be connected to the Right Y stepper, not Left. Keep an eye on this when you home the machine for the first time. The gantry should travel to the back right corner. Reverse your Y connectors if this is not the case.
- The plastic "Filler Strips" that go under the hybrid table to stop things from falling under the T-track are not needed on newer machines. We have a new extrusion with an extra wide lip that reduces the gap.
- In case it was not clear, remove the Shipping Bolt from the X-axis carrier plate before installing the Z-axis. Otherwise the Z-axis won't mount correctly...
-If you are missing fasteners, please contact support. All hardware is Metric, so if you're missing something and you want to source it locally just bring the screw/bolt to the hardware store and look for something the same diameter/length.
- When you are installing the drag chains, there are plastic spacers that get installed under the drag chain tails.

This has to be the most watchable manufacturer's assembly video I've ever watched. I particularly enjoyed Winston casually yeeting the boxes over his shoulder.
Outstanding engineering, attention to detail, precision and customer service. The entire team at Shapeoko sets a customer first standard for the rest to follow. Thank you
My Shapeoko Pro arrived two days ago! Looking forward to assembly ASAP! Thank you for the video!
Just got mine shipped (on time - thanks) to Australia. Looking forward to Jan 2, 2021 to start building this. Perfect presentation for me, big thanks.
This was a great video my friend! I kept looking forward to you throwing a box after you would open it. :)
Looks like a very solid machine. I can't wait to upgrade!
The video is a great compliment to the instruction manual. Can you update the video to the current machine?
Amazing tool, amazing setup video. That thing looks massive!
Nice overview, looking forward to mine arriving and playing this video over and over again while I assemble it! 😎
hahah. Basically what I am doing right now!
How is it using the shapeoko?
I have an original Shapeoko, wish I had the space for this bad boy. I watched the video just because I like listening to Winston explain stuff.
Nice work Winston...Ok, so the ground wire on the controller really made me happy....(Ok, so I'm a little different) I'm also looking forward to buying the standard model when it's available...I wonder if there'll be a meta table in lieu of the dead trees...... I really like what I see...as a REALLY demanding Engineer and as a 5-year Shapeoko owner. PS I did cry a little to see the marker made by tag rather than an engraved plate. Hiyaaa!!!!
Saving up for one of these now. Though for my shop, the XL will work best.
Can't wait to start making stuff with mine...
This one is the Real one ☝🏻…..
A BEAST……
I want it… ✌🏼🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
Oh god I am so excited to get mine!
Overall this was a good video but keep in mind for a newbie it does skip over some steps that you have to figure out on your own. Not a huge deal though. We figured everything out. It would have been awesome if the plastic strips that are nestled in the machine channels wouldn’t have been missing so we could have finished he build.
Please update the video to mention you need to remove the shipping screw from the Z axis mounting plate before mounting, and that the new machines do not come with the plastic strips under the T slot extrusions now.
It looks like Seville Classics UltraHD Lighted Workbench from Slams Club for about $200. Bench without the drawers are about $140.
I can't find the buttonhead cap screws for the plastic pieces at 12:07??? Are they supposed to come with the machine?
I just received my machine. Go Bahamas! Perhaps you may want to coloraturas code the connecting points. I noticed that both sides of the connectors are not marked. Additionally, wasn't sure which drag chain to install on the x and z axis. You may want to specify what goes where. Nice touch with the video. Definitely better than a difficult manual.
Just got mine assembled and am going through the initialization setup. When I do the steps to load defaults for travel dimensions around 15:10, the defaults it loads are different than the ones shown here, 870, 850, 95, vs the 855, 850, 100 shown on your screen. Just curious which one is correct? Thanks for the video by the way assembly was pretty easy with it.
'power and usb connectors pointing backwards" at 13:26.... so the board goes on upside down???
Metric, wow. Finally someone in the USA discovered that metric makes sense. Wonderful.
Every American car made since the late 80s has been fully metric.
I followed all the steps and all seemed well until the machine moved forward toward the bit setter …when I attempted to position the router over the bit setter the x y and z movements were so tiny that it would take hours to get it over the bit setter . Could some wires be crossed ?
So the question I have is...shapeoko3 with HDZ or the pro version??
Thank you for sharing nice video👍👍👍what’s the best tool to use to machine 1/8” plywood?
Is this compatible with the HDZ? Or is there an expansion pack to Pro? I have a base Shapeoko I’ve upgraded substantially including the HDZ but I’d love to expand and get all the features of the Pro.
There is no upgrade path to the Pro because almost every part is different. We are looking into bringing certain aspects of the Pro to regular Shapeokos, like the threaded table, but don't have a timeline for it. HDZ is not currently supported on the Pro, we're also looking into that for the future.
When will the xl and standard models be available?
Ugh! Now I’m even more anxious for mine to arrive! Is there a solid list of other things I should have on day 1 such as bits, various woods, sanding solutions, etc.?
Look up Skyone Cnc on Facebook. They offer a great starter pack of bits.
Then check out Pwncnc.com. Daniel Heth Moran offers a great selection of dust boots, clamps and accessories.
Hey Winston great video - do you recommend using blue Loctite at any point in the build?
I'm not using any currently, but it wouldn't hurt for some of the more permanent attachment interfaces. Just don't use it on things you'll need to loosen later, like the spindle mount.
Use Vibratite VC3.. It does all the vibration fixes and leaves the fastener to be loosened when needed. It's expensive, but trust me, it's worth it.
Just want to confirm that I'll need to cut the belts after tensioning? Seems like I have some more room in the rear to leave some slack, but not the 8" or so I have left over after tensioning...
I had the same issue, but have been too chicken to cut the belts down.
My x cable came backwards and I had to flip the end clips to install it properly. Also the z bracket that holds the x and y drag chains is machined for the left side of the x bracket and not the right so the bracket doesn’t fit properly. Looks like mounting it wrong might not interfere with anything but won’t know until I get the rest built and running. There’s a chance it crashes into the back right wall.
Just installed it and pushed the x all the way back and it clears the back post. Fingers crossed no more hiccups.
Winston, will you guys be offering a version with 2 rails on each side of the y-axis in the future?
I see the X-Axis has doubled-up rails which should give a vast improvement in stability/rigidity.
Would love to have that option on Y-Axis as well - maybe in combination with a beefier Gantryplate as well - double the thickness - should also vastly improve oberall stability of the machine even further!
Could you please elaborste on the design choice to have the frame and the rails put on stand-offs?
would it not be more rigid via direct connection of milled surfaces?
Look at it this way: the X axis has 2 rails, and the Y axis has two rails. The Y axis rails are just spaced out further than the X axis rails.
I want one.... is it possible to buy one in Europe
Impressive machine; however, don't forget about your customers. I am eagerly awaiting a BitSetter that I ordered last Tuesday (12/1). For context, I placed two orders prior using your Black Friday promo, of which you shipped both promptly (w/in a day). However, you have yet to fulfill the BitSetter order I placed two days later. I reached out via e-mail but didn't receive a reply. Again, incredible machines and excellent company, however, please keep in mind that hobbyists like me really appreciate our weekends.
Where do I go to get support on my new Shapeoko Pro which I have just assembled?
Send a message to support@carbide3d.com or the phone number on our website.
both x and y limit switches were preinstalled incorrectly. my machine couldn't recognize them and just kept smashing into the walls over and over. had to remove them and dremel out the plastic to be able to get the switches set to a usable condition. have seen others post about this and wanted to let more people know.
Thanks for this heads up!
On your website, you didn't add India to buy your machine. Why?
What is the measure of the cnc ?
An reason why you guys opted to NOT go with ball screws on this iteration of the "pro" model?
Exactly. Belt driven is unacceptable. If you throw linear guides on why is it still belt driven????
I would like to know why not ball screw too.
Just in case anyone cares... the Bulkman3D "Queen Bee Pro" mechanical kit does come with lineal rails and lead screws for like only $700. Your Shapeoko electronics and everything can bolt right up to it. bulkman3d.com/product/queenbee-pro-cnc-machine-mechanical-kit-upgrade-kit
For the this type of machine, belt driven is perfectly acceptable. Benefits of a such robust belt, overweight the cons by a lot.
What side is, price....
All my cable labels are faded, can see what they say....
can the router sold on your website able to cut aluminum
Does it need to be sprayed with coolant
When does the 30 days start? After first initialization?
From the date of receipt of the machine. Full details here: carbide3d.com/warranty/
Does it have the same cutter connection issues as the previous models or has it been fixed for the Pro?
80mm spindle mount?
Not yet. Hopefully Luke D'Lonra-Bonathan is given the go ahead to design a HDZ adapter......sooner than later.
i am going to build myself a proper workshop. The Shapeoko Pro will be and integral machine in it.
what kind of work tables are those?
@@sudo936 Duh brand? I’ll look it up, thanks for the help sir. Great community we have.
Check out the Fusion 5 (Windows 10) Tablet. It is widely used as a controller for Carbide Motion.
It isn't a CAD design computer but a great controller to free up your main computer.
@@ClintonCaraway-CNC I second this. It's what I use for my shapeoko
Seville Classics UltraHD Lighted Workbench (in America, If your Canadian it is called Vancouver Classics UltraHD LED Lighted Work Centre, which can be purchased from Costco.ca).
Was this voice over by John Saunders? Also, is the modified Z-Plus equivalent to the HDZ, or is it inferior (similar to the regular Z-Plus)?
His name is Winston Moy, he has his own channel on RUclips by the same name if you want to soak in more of his smooth talking.
Helpful but this video is outdated. Using this to assemble a machine in 2023 and things are a bit different. An updated video would be helpful, thanks.
its well out of my price range, i dont think its a hobby machine any more which is a shame as thats where its grew from but you have to admit that its a tidy well designed machine. I think it should at least have lead screws at this price point
Is a lead screw really a sign for a high-quality machine? After all, those 3018 $200 letter-size CNCs use lead screws, so I’m not so sure that this is the make or break. I’m sure they tested their machines for slippage under load and found belts to be just fine. After all, your car has a timing belt that keeps your cylinders from self destructing;-) If it’s good enough for a car, it’s good enough for a prosumer tool.
@@langrock74 yes it is a sign of quality, at this price point the least they could do is lead screws but probably should have used ball screws, even a £200 3018 has lead screws. Not like this is a cheap machine they are asking enough money dont make excuses for them they did it because it was cheaper
@@langrock74 any way its not about signs of quality, its about accuacy lead screws/ ball screws are more accurate that belts thats all. the custumer is paying enough for them to be included . This is being marketed as a pro machine belts are for hobby machines as they are cheaper and stretch. if belts were good enough theyd be used on the z axis as well
Ok, you have my money but where's my machine?
Machines have already begun shipping already, so if you haven't gotten a notification yet expect one soon. If you want the latest estimate, please email the sales team.
I'm just a few minutes into the video, but one question arises: Why are you wearing a mask? I see that later you take it off... I assume because you realized it was ridiculous.
I noticed that there was another employee in the background (who knows, there may have been even more out of the camera shot too). Have you thought that Winston was not the only person in the building at the time? It is good etiquette to follow during this time of the Covid-19 Pandemic! Good show, Winston for sporting your mask!
@@MichaelDavidHiltner Sure... etiquette should trump science any day.
