- A convicted South African murderer who shot dead dozens of black men during apartheid has told the BBC the police sanctioned his violence.
Louis van Schoor says others should share the blame for the killings he carried out as a security guard.
Over a three-year period in the 1980s under the country’s racist apartheid system - which imposed a strict hierarchy that privileged white South Africans - Van Schoor shot and killed at least 39 people.

Also, close to 1 million people murdered since the end of Apartheid, MORE than during Apartheid. Most horrendous murders are committed today by Africans but the BBC would rather focus on something 30 years ago. While people of all races suffer more today. But from that angle, the BBC successfully didn't inform people as yourself but just played the narrative for the gullible clueless in society. Naively thinking the Main stream media don't lie, by omitting 50% of a story.

These officers have the power to use lethal force in certain situations even today. Back then , the criteria needed to be met for justified lethal force was lower ( guessing ). A gentlemans agreement was likely made with law enforcement , as he says. I suspect mere trespassing was grounds to be shot. Which was very common in SA at the time ( getting shot for trespassing )

There are Afikaners who try to justify Apartheid by referring to how they were treated by the British and yet they learnt nothing from that. The difference is one was war and the other was supposed to be separate development by burning books so that the Africans would only get Bantu education and this guy thinks they were right. Pathetic.
BBC, you should have mentioned the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which is an important piece of the puzzle on why some of these killers have been released so soon. After the Apartheid system was abolished, the TRC focused on forgiving transgressors of political crime on both sides of the struggle by granting them amnesty. From the Wikipedia page: "The TRC's emphasis on reconciliation was in sharp contrast to the approach taken by the Nuremberg trials and other de-Nazification measures. South Africa's first coalition government chose to pursue forgiveness over prosecution, and reparation over retaliation."
However, note that Van Schoor was not actually released as a result of the TRC - he even applied for it and was rejected. He was released under the Thabo Mbeki administration, the president who served after Mandela served one term. Apparently this was a standard procedure of the criminal justice system based on factors like good behaviour. But it is clear from this interview that he never felt remorse. So I don't agree that he should have been released after only 12 years.

Hold up, his "victims" were breaking into shops & businesses when they were gunned down (some with weapons). Its not like he was roaming the streets looking for people to kill - the people he killed were committing crimes. Having said that, he's certainly no saint.
Let me be very clear. Im not condoning anyone killing anyone else, certainly not for a petty crime such as theft. However I think this BBC piece could have been more clear on that point. A bit more balanced if you will.
I get what you're saying, but I think it's even vaguer than that.
I don't know the case to say for certain, but looking at the picture of the alarms shown in the video, the ones marked are external. To me, that means that they could be triggered by someone walking past/down the street, or hanging around outside. Now that might be considered trespassing (walking across the property of another), but I think we've all cut across the parking area of a closed business before (entirely innocently, with no malicious intent), but we don't know if these people were actually breaking into anywhere, whether they were an utter menace to those businesses, or simply walking past. I mean, kids used to regularly play on an industrial estate near to my old house (at weekends, when it was closed) purely because it is a large space and they could be noisy and not bother anyone. Gunning them down for that would be cold-blooded and absolute insanity.
If they were criminals, though, then I think the context of Apartheid is important here. Many people were turned away, due to their race, from employment, and struggled to survive. Someone stealing for survival, in order to feed their family and stop them from starving, is very different to someone stealing to make money because they don't want to work for it. We wouldn't refer to those under oppressive rule in WWII (I'm trying to be careful with my wording to stop RUclips taking my comment down!) as theives for stealing to survive - they would have our empathy and we'd still consider them victims of a brutal regime, regardless of skin tone. I think we need to be careful not to get sucked into the mindset these people have created to justify their own abhorrent actions.
I totally agree with you that taking life for petty reasons is egregious, and the guy's total lack of remorse comes across as a threat to society to me - I wouldn't want him living near my family, and I'm white. But I think we definitely need more information before deciding the culpability of his victims (as they could be far better or far worse than the BBC are eluding to in this brief clip).

I am a 31 year old white South African male, l am here today to learn from the past and to be reminded of the horrendous acts that were committed by the people in charge of the country before I was born. This documentary is not to incite violence or hatred, but to remind us to not repeat what was done. While I do not support him, she does step over the line. True, no court covicted him as such. BUT, more importantly, it was the Black, post-apartheid South African government that freed him. Moreover, the Truth and Reconciliation commission set up by the ANC (think Mandela and Tutu) were there to promote forgiveness. The BBC seems to have forgotten that this is why post-apartheid South Africa did not turn into a bloodbath. Pretty pathetic that the BBC is now (30 years later) trying to re-write South African history post-Mandela, re-open wounds and stir up the anger and hatred that Mandela, Tutu and other worked so hard to avoid.
