Hello, brother. I remember those times too. It was very difficult to find videotapes. (Donetsk People's Republic, former USSR). With sincere greetings.
Me too, What an era. Richie was and still is the king in my opinion though. That voice is beyond incredible. Between his vocals, guitar, bass, piano playing and his creative songwriting abilities etc etc he's pretty much untouchable as far as I'm concerned
Richie is a sick talent, Ive followed him since the early days. Amazing player. He has all the athletic skills of a fast runner but knows how to play with feel!

This tape is the fucking bible for legato. One of the secrets to alternate picking is having legato. These exercises will make you great for this direction
When you already have all the technique you will ever need in your 20s, so you can spend the rest 30-40 years playing what you really want no matter what....
I have been playing for 36 years and I'm getting a lot out of this video. I don't listen to Richie Kotzen, but he does have some chops. It just goes to show you that you can learn something from anyone. We gotta stop being arrogant.

when i first played the guitar i couldn't synchronize my right hand with my left, so i used to just put my hand on the fret board to make a sound like playing, so my teacher said there are people who do this and it is called legato, and then he showed me the solo. i stood with my mouth open. and then said (is this a human playing?!) who is this guy? i never heard of him before. that solo is the best solo iv'e ever seen, it's so rich in harmony and i never get bored of hearing it.
Richie has really matured, as have all of most of us. I much prefer his playing now, though I like his approach better with a pick. He is freakishly gifted in both playing and singing.
This changed my playing for ever!! My right hand could never keep up with my left hand and after seeing this video for the first time some 15 years ago, i was able to overcome my frustration with alternate picking and my legato, hammer-on pull-off took off!!
You said that right, being a musician is really hard work, a'lot of people think it is just fun and game's. I am with you as I see people's post's here some of them just do not have any knowledge of music at all....
Thanks so much for posting this. I used to have this on vhs and haven't seen it in years. For those that don't know, he was 17 when he recorded this (he's 42 now). Yeah he was a shredder in his younger years but obviously now he's much more bluesy in his approach, and the technique he developed in his younger years is only used to enhance his playing.
i bought this on vhs when it first came out and 8:34 is the lick i copied from him right off the bat and i still play it in one way or another to this very day after all these years!
Not every guitar player can be completely original, that's just not possible. But I learnt a lot from this video, it was about 25 years ago and one of the better instructional videos that came out back then. He may not be original but he's a good teacher
Understand, this is an instructional video!! INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO!! This is used for practice and technical purposes!! This is NOT an album!! These are NOT songs!!

I can Shred, but putting a whole long shred in a song without thinking of timing, the real escence of the song is emotionless, and antisensitive, and even shredding becomes robotic when you don't know when to stop, in which part put a bend, or how to add the whole transmition thing using silences in the right time, build up the ending and the beginning of a shredding scale to be tastier or full of rock sense, such as people like Vai, Satriani, Wylde, Bettencourt, or even Kotzen in his actual style can do it, not in this era vid, he was too modal for me
I wanted to be a shredder like Vinnie Moore, Paul Gilbert, etc.. So I put these lessons on the back burner for a while cause I thought I should devote all of my practice time to alternate picking. One day, I suddenly realized that it was my fretting hand that was slowing me down!! I never thought that could be!! So I began devoting 2/3 of each practice session to legato. That turned out to be a good idea!! If you wanna be a shredder, practice picking muted strings (boring but enormously effective) AND practice legato!!
Great player. He's certainly evolved since then. I like his playing more now as it's more style focused rather than techniquecentric. But Richie, like the other Shrapnel players, was under a lot of pressure in those days to outshred the competition.
This was my very first instructional video I ever bought. It cost me $49.95 on vhs lol but I got my money's worth. I played along with it every day for probably a whole year and it really upped my game very quickly. I became really comfortable playing fast legato licks. I know this style is not fashionable these days(except maybe among the underground shred guys) but I still love playing like this.
thing is, the operating word here is moderation I would say. While I freely admit to being shit at legato, many melodic riffs have a slow (feeling or emotional) part, then are sped up for the crescendo then back down again, wouldn't you agree?
I really don't know why Steve Vai is more famous... Incredible player! and a good teacher as well. In one line with Y. Malmsteen, V. Moore, P. Gilbert and J. Becker.
You know he was only 19 here right.. Over the years he grew as an artist.. He's just a kid here. He was part of that Mike Varney group of young 17-20 year old shredders in the 80's. Varney was a young guy that started his own label and focused in on shredders. Malmsteen signed on at 17, Gilbert signed on at 17, Friedman age 18, Becker age 16, Kotzen age 19 etc. What were you doing at 16-19?
I don't recall him being one of Varney's Whiz kids. Shawn was already a touring musician w/ BOA before Varney started his whole "shred" search. And I don't recall Shawn ever recording or being in a contract w/ Shrapnel records or any of his other "labels". Although, he did try to collaborate w/ Mike's brother Mark for a project but it didn't go anywhere. But, I will say this about Shawn. I have a few of his recordings and the dude was just scary.. I would have to agree w/ Paul GIlbert who said, "Shawn could play circles around me, he was the most terrifying guy of all time."
Ryan T Between 16-19, I was trying to emulate Mike Varney's Shrapnel stable of talents. I still reminisce about those days sitting in my room & practicing for hours on end only taking a break for a Coke, ham & cheese, & the occasional blowjob from my slut Cuban girlfriend.
