No Callisto Protocol? I’m shocked.
@@Lock2002ful I thought most people hated Callisto protocol. everyone taking about it seems to think it was a massive disappointment
Note that Shadow Man is not #2, but is the DF Retro pick.
You are a saint 👍🏻
The best thing about Johns list every year is that he highlights some games i never even heard about. Freedom Planet 2 for example looks very cool and it does not even have a media metacritic score! These are the type of games that get ignored all the time by mainstream.
Same goes for Spark the Electric Jester 3.
John has unique taste. I haven’t heard of half these games. Freedom Planet 2 looks absolutely dazzling!
right??? how the f**k have i never heard of Freedom Planet?????????????????????????
Ikr, he usually highlights the good fun games. The big games are fun to an extent but these smaller games still grasp in the fun, skill, entertainment over graphics and story like the good ole days. The other crew usually have a similar list but guess they are to busy to make a video.
Two other excellent (IMO) 2022 games I feel others here might appreciate:
DRAINUS, a side-scrolling shoot 'em up by the venerable Team Ladybug - an excellent game with clear Ikaruga inspiration that still feels unique.
Ex-Zodiac, a Starfox-esque 3D rail shooter by solo dev Ben Hickling, with music by +TEK - very difficult, but satisfying! Also using Godot engine, which is neat to see.
Nobody does it like John Linneman. So comprehensive in technical analysis and appreciation of the medium on a deep and wholistic level. Always love any chance I get to listen to him.
You can tell that Jon definitely puts gameplay above all other aspects…and for a good reason.
John has been my best source of discovering new games the past few years. His taste in retro style games is exceptional, I really appreciate the work he does
I find my tastes often align with John’s more than anyone else in tech, so I’m excited to try any games on this list I may have missed. Thanks John!
I played Guardians of the Galaxy just because of his recommendation last year and I'm not a MCU fan at all. I'm so glad I did.
Completely agree! Played lots of Johns hot take recommendations and haven’t regretted a single one.
I agree and he is a genuine lover of retro games so that’s a big plus!
I'm in the same boat. Well, everything except the weeb shit 😂
@@b0nz1official yeah it seems like a lot of fun. Might be worth checking out in the next couple months
John’s the best kind of critic, he is always able to sincerely articulate why a game appealed to him and what kind of feelings he took away from it. I always look forward to hearing his opinions!
He's a class act
Shadow man getting the respect it deserves, John really is a man of impeccable taste.
I love Shadow Man
This is one of the videos I most look forward to every year. Cheers John.

This list is so varied and introduces games well outside the mainstream and I’m so grateful for that. Look at the majority of end of the year lists from the majority of game journalists and you likely wouldn’t be able to tell them apart. Well done, DF.
John's Best of the Year lists are always a highlight at the end of the year and i hope you had a great Christmas with the family John, here's to a great 2023 :)
Sorry to hear you may have had a rough patch this year. Just know that your stellar work enhances my overall experience and I’m very grateful for you and the whole DF team. We ALL love you my friend!
As soon as that Neon White music kicked in I got goosebumps. There’s some mesmerizing about the aesthetic of the world, music, and resulting atmosphere. I will never forget it.
Production values(editing, analysis and writing, examples, music choice, transitions etc) are always a cut above the top 10 list fare produced by other outlets. Found several titles I missed that will be giving a shot now. Thanks for all the content in 2022.
The number of people in the comments _angry_ about other people's preferences and tastes is honestly yikes
It's really nice to see that John's personal favorite games are not graphical power houses
These top ten lists would be a throw-away video for any other channel . . . meanwhile we have John inserting shots from HDMI modded n64's and FPGA Gameboys just to backdrop a minor point. Excellent work my friend, we don't deserve you :)
I’m glad he rated NFS so highly, wouldn’t have given it a second thought otherwise. I’m thoroughly enjoying the game, especially the in race banter with Rudiger.
I always like df's end of year coverage. It seemingly is above the "hypest" game issue a lot of publications have.
I always love the respect John shows to the music in all of his videos. Happy new year to all the DF team and thanks for a great 2022!
thanks a bunch for compiling this list.I DID NOT expect to see Star Ocean and Freedom Planet
I love John's best of! There are always games that I would have otherwise missed. Thanks!
you would have missed elden ring?
@@visceraeyes525 there are some other games on the list, you know :)
All those games are well known
@@ManiLink nope
@@ManiLink I've never heard of Freedom Planet or Cultic
Love how John always calls out good soundtracks
You need to play Signalis. I feel like it's exactly the type of game you will love.
100% agree. John is the kind of person who will immediately see and appreciate the passion poured into a game like Signalis. Not to mention that it's just a very good game on its own. The best elements of classic RE gameplay and puzzles combined with the atmosphere of SH.
This was a day one buy for me. Gotta shout out the Haunted PS1 Demo Disk for showing me this existed before it released. Their "Eek 3" videos show off so many cool games and Signalis was one of the games I had to follow closely. While it was a day one buy I promised my younger sister I'd wait to play it with her after we finish RE4 so shout out to her for also being the reason I know of the Haunter PS1 demo disk and for knowing Signalis exists.
Yeah Signalis, Sifu, and Prodeus not making John's list surprised the hell out of me.
Those are exactly the kind of games he's talk about.
john played it, check his twitter. he said it almost made it to the list.
@@tokyobassist Prodeus was on the list a previous year even though it was still in early access then. Maybe 1.0 just didn’t add enough to bring it back for another year’s list?
TUNIC was such a surprising gem for me. It grabbed and held on tight. I was even going out to my car during lunch to play on my laptop haha The story was soooo much deeper than ever imagined and you better put your thinkin cap on. If you love challenge, like to explore, and want nice deep story to disappear into, this was such an amazing game, and I couldn't recommend it enough.
Glad to see Freedom Planet 2 get some recognition. Loved that game.
Shredder's Revenge legit got my #1 pick for 2022. It's the most fun I had with a game all year.
Lots of quality, uniqueness and variety. I always find new stuff to play from your lists. Great job as always!
These are always my favorite DF videos of the year. Thanks, John!
Hell yes. Always anticipate the games we played in 2022, and John's selection is in line with my particular tastes also.
I love your perspective on game design John. You got your heart in the right place. My 2022 favorites are Elden Ring and NFS Unbound. Stay as you are John. I love you guys.
Every year I look forward to John’s list. Ever since like 2016/17 I’ve been watching these vids and writing down these great games to play. Thanks John!!! Another great one. Merry Christmas
Great stuff John thanks for all your efforts in 2022. Looking forward to your content in 2023.
I always love that the guys who do the highest tech break downs, always end up liking the most basic, retro games. Nothing wrong with it, just a funny thing.
Just adding to the John appriciation. Watched a bunch of your videos this year and enjoyed very much!
John Carpenter's Tony Hawkes Pro Running Man is the like the single greatest combination of words ever!!
I look forward to this every year. I appreciate the passion that goes into your videos, keep up the excellent work!
I personally like these videos because it helps me to know about some of the less well known possible gems, or interesting and/or quirky games that came out this year. Thank you as always for your dedication and happy new year.
Thanks so much for all the hard work and inspiration this year John, these are fantastic picks with a few you just put on my map that I can't wait to try
Thanks for this year! Elden Ring was truly amazing to play. I've missed out on a lot of games this year, but one that I played only recently was Pentiment. It was right up my alley with its unique style and superb writing.
Excellent as always John! Your end of year lists are always a treat!
The moment I’ve been waiting for all year. The John Linneman collection is here !!!!
John's lists are always personal. Never based on what's mainstream, popular or best selling. I appreciate that
Great list, i'll be checking out Cultic and Freedom Planet 2 since those weren't on my radar.
As always, John's Linneman Collection video at years end never fails to impress. That is a really solid batch of games.
You can always expect a retro-style FPS from John! Cultic looks pretty cool! Kind of like if Rise of the Triad and Duke Nukem had a baby.
As always, a wonderful collection of some Triple A titles as well as some surprises that I would have completely missed without this list. Thanks John!
I LOVE these last videos of the year!
Great video! John is a great source for interesting games to play, both new and old. A couple of these I've played and liked, a couple are on my radar, and the rest I've never heard of, but would now like to try!
Now the list that matters.
Among all John is the one who always seems to be having fun and talking about having fun with the games they cover.
Another great watch John. Your taste in games is often a breath of fresh air compared to the rest of YT. Hopefully you're in a better place mentally. It's been a tough year for many of us!
Happy New Years, John. I hope things are better for you in 2023!
Thanks for the great work all year long John!
One of the best people for uncovering those lesser known gems.
Thanks for the vid, a couple of games I'll have to check out. Also appreciated the Shadowman shoutout, one of my favourite games from that era of gaming!
Shadow Man rocks!
Excellent choices and a few new games to try, thanks john.
John's lists are always a treat, so refreshing. would I've like a couple of honorable mentions to round the list.
Hard agree with Tunic; I was really blown away by it. The audio design, visual flair and unique art style, the mysterious handbook and world exploration. Wow. What an experience.
Thanks for coming through for us John. I know you’ve mentioned a lot about how difficult 2022 was for you - going as far as to say it was the worst year of your life. Hope 2023 is better for you. Always appreciate your content and your insight on games. Look forward to this video every year and can’t wait to see what fun the hobby brings us all in 2023
Where did he say it was his worst year alive? What happened?
What a great countdown list. Love this
Excellent selection of games, lovely list as usual. Thanks!
Great list, I always love seeing what you pick and learn about something new.
Love the variety of this list! John always has titles I missed or forgot were made and defintiely will be checking out during my holiday break! looking forward to Pocky and Rocky and Cultic!
Looks like I’ll be buying tomorrow, some games I’d never even heard of yesterday! Thanks John.
I'm going to get several of these games a shot thanks to this video. Excellent production values and good taste with the selection of games that feels curated rather than just the games that got hype this year.
Awesome video, John! Love the variety of your picks.
Great job John, Happy New Year!
I just started watching DF this year and this was probably my favorite video! Always love seeing another Sonic fan who’s always on the lookout for Sonic-likes.
this was great. love the selection of classic and modern experiences across the list. learned about a couple from this I hadn't heard of also! thanks & 'ava happy new year!
Was waiting for this John, thanks to you i have played many hidden gems. Im playing dusk right now
I love John's taste in gaming
Cheers John! Always love these vids
Great List John, thanks for share your favorites games as a nice video to watch. Keep going with the excellent work.
Interesting pics! And a bit of a surprise for the number one game, after hearing the rest of the list hehe. I always enjoy John's analyses of games from an "appreciation of games as an art form" perspective. There was a lot of variety of game types here too. Cheers!
kudos for shadowman. I spent also so much time with it after the original walkthrough two decades ago. And the remake is fantastic and runs amazing.
I adore Shadow Man
Thanks, John, for the list! Cool stuff!
DF's video on Shadow Man got me to play the game and I'm so glad I did. Moody 90s adventure platformer that ticks all my boxes. Makes me beg for Nightdive to remaster the classic Tomb Raider games too.
Shadow Man is completely brilliant
I love this wide ranging mix here. I am also impressed God of War 2 isn't on this list, yet the games you presented had such good args that I didn't even realize it until the end.
God of War 5*
@@doriane9184 God of war (2018) 2
he didn't play it
Shadow Man is my fav of all time, for multiple reasons...now the remaster was like perfect gift.
Rollerdrome is pure adrenaline gold! Fuckin loved this game!
My goty is roller drome. Glad to see it in this vid
It’s nice to see a list with so much variety
Thanks for letting me know about cultic John. It was amazing. Just finished it yesterday. I really loved this game.
Awesome production quality. The recordings/captures are good.
The best list of best games I've ever seen
Refreshing list compared to other outlets. I hadn't heard of some of these. Thanks for the video.
Awesome picks all around Jon! This reminded me to get Rollerdome and Unbound. Other games like Neon White I never thought to get are now on my wishlist. I really appreciate your variety and taste in games!
John has the great taste that every Sega fan is bestowed with. It's a brotherhood, a blessing, and in the modern age sometimes a curse.
man you have great taste, most of these games I didn't know existed yet I want to play every single one.
I gotta say John, that you're probably the voice in the gaming media that I hold in the highest regard ♥️ always love your content and your views/ gaming selections. I'm glad to see NFS Unbound included here! Very underrated and the ultimate arcade racer to round off the year :) it's so satisfyingly difficult, addictive and makes you treasure each of your custom cars - the most important qualities in an arcade racer imo!
Personally I'd have to also include Gran Turismo 7, Horizon Forbidden West and maybe even The Calisto Protocol (I've been very impressed so far) in my GOTY top 10 but this is a very solid list! I'm yet to try out some of these so I'll probably grab 'em soon. I had great fun with Shadowman at your recommendation 😌
John has one problem that really bothers me. He is way too easy and soft on games that are highly regarded AAA games even when the devs/pubs deserve harsh criticism. I've seem him gloss over issues like this for many years now. For example Last of Us 1 Remake. Why didn't he criticize more harshly for the fact that it was a cash grab and WAY BELOW graphically for what Naughty Dog should deliver on a Ps5 exclusive? It looks only marginally different than LoU2 which came out in ps4 in 2019. His whole 40 min review compared it to the ps3 version instead of the ps4 remaster. Like what? Just weird and I don't think that's a good look at all considering DF is one of the few media channels Sony, MS, Rockstar etc listen to.
Happy Holidays John!
Wow what an absolutely unique list… definitely not what I expected haha
Love the list John, I'm always excited to watch it every year and even convinced some of your "interesting picks" into my backlog 😅 cheers and happy new year!
I LOVE how this lists highlights some underdogs
Yes! Off to a strong start with Star Ocean. It's my personal favourite of the year and I'm glad to see somebody shine a light on it.
I was surprised on that one, honestly the demo turned me off from it. It was the cut scenes that did it, it was unbearable imo it made me rush through to get done faster and then quit some time at the castle ruins. People may have made fun of Sony 1st party games being cinematic movie but damn this game needed that budget
@@mikethekingj75 I'd love to see a Star Ocean game with a Sony first party budget. Unfortunately the developer is facing insolvency and although the IP holder, Square Enix, is willing to fund a lot of niche titles, I don't think they had the confidence to give it anything close to a Final Fantasy budget.
However, I enjoyed it a lot and the cutscenes were honestly a lot better than the last couple of entries. Characters were a lot better too.
@@strangevision99 I might have to give it another shot then the demo that is and ignore the cut scene to an extent. SO4 is the only one i played, the last 1 I bought but never touched and going by everyone comment about it I might never will. RIP $
@@mikethekingj75 If it's not something you enjoy that's ok. We can't like every game.
john bruv !!! Shadowman game of the year here as well... what a nice surprise at the end
Shadow Man rules!
I loved how high on the list Neon White ended up. Truly a great game that made me want to speedrun for the first time ever.
Feels good seeing Freedom Planet 2 on this list :D
Fantastic selection John👌 of which I have played very few 😫 I need to catch up 😁
Cool, thank you for pointing out Cultic! I haven't had a good PC to play PC much for several years now so I haven't kept up on the smaller games that I might otherwise be interested in, but having a Steam Deck now, it's the perfect opportunity to check out titles like that.
