Erik2Ammo They are superior then it comes to the technical aspect yes. But that is the main thing they focus on, and therefore reviews and other analysis are needed.
Ludens I never complained that the channel put up this video. I like it. My comment was just about those that complain and say "about time" when this isn't the channels focus and thus should remain special episodes.
Unlike a lot of other goty videos I feel this guy actually picked his personal favourites rather than the standard games a lot of journalists feel they have to pick...
I generally hang around Giant Bomb and Waypoint, and I saw these 5 games pop up quite a bit in GOTY lists. 2017 has just kind of been a stacked year in general.
The topp choices for most pages are the same game because it is the best overall. You can have different favorite games, like this guy, but it is not the same as "best game". I would say that Zelda is the best game of the year, with Nier second, but my personal favorite is Mario.
Tobias Blixt I agree but it's nice to see someone with a fresh opinion, like for me the evil within 2 easily makes the top 5 but it is a game that got panned by reviewers.
+Dawson Sheen: Me, too. It will eventually join my current XB1S, and PC with Oculus Rift. (Note, I got all of these systems in the last quarter of 2017, after having not been a "gamer" for years!)
I personally wouldn't buy any version of the Xbox One since it legitimately has no exclusives and rather go for a PS4/Pro but to each their own. Right now I'm really enjoying the Switch which is currently the only console that I have.
TheMrAntoMean You people can't just let one comment go without pushing your exclusives on us? A lot of us don't want your throwaway singleplayer exclusives. If someone wants an xbox, let them have one. Don't tell them to not get one.
I picked up a switch Literally yesterday along with Mario oddessy and within 10 hours it instantly soared to my personal game of the year, it's insanely fun and exploring to find moons and regional coins is a wonderful experience
guys you officially made me a lifetime fan. your daily work unpurposely serves as fuel for gaming platform war and at the climax of hostilities your top5 game of the year is entirely about 2D and DoubleA games at best. Congrats!
david diaz Graphics are really important for me. Sonic Mania is a game I’d consider to be very pretty. If a game looks bad, it’s difficult to enjoy, but it’s not about shaders or polygon count. It’s about the art style.
Here is my top 5 (I haven't completed Nier Automata yet) 1. Breath of the Wild 2. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 3. Persona 5 4. Super Mario Odyssey 5. The End Is Nigh 5. Sonic Mania
salem alzaabi I have yet to play quite a few on this list but I do plan to. #1 Legend of Zelda Breath of The Wild ( I really don't expect anything to top it out of 2017 games) #2 Persona 5 #3 Prey
Because as an Ouya owner why doesn't he have any of our excellent exclusives? He has one from one for Playstation, one for Xbox, one for Nintendo, and even one from former console maker Sega. But no none from our excellent exclusive lineup. Downvoted.
Not only is Linneman's game taste great (both retro and newschool). But whomever choose "Simon Stålenhag - Fluvial Beat Deposits" for opening track was a genius. Keep em vids coming, you guys rule! :D
Hey! very similar to my list, alphabetically: - Horizon Zero Dawn - Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - NieR:Automata - Prey - Sonic Mania Mario Odyssey might've made my list, but no Switch yet. Still rocking Wii U !! -
1-Divinity 2: Original Sin 2- Prey 3- Horizon: Zero dawn 4- Zelda - Breath of the Wild 5-Super Mario Odyssey 6-What Remains of Edith Finch 7-A hat in time 8-Total War- Warhammer 2 9-Resident Evil 7-Biohazard 10-Wolfenstein 2- The new Colossus
Paulo Lameiras no. Most games on os4 and or Xbox one were pretty bad (last year and a small part of 2016 had some of the best games of this generation (like Horizon Zero dawn , uncharted 4 , Super Mario Odyssey, and The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, to name a few). There were a lot of alright and bad games.
Eberton Guedes exactly that is one of the reasons why I personally think both PlayStation and Xbox has a way better generation (in terms of games) compared to this generation Nintendo has dominated in terms of exclusives (they have some of the best exclusives this generation when compared to PlayStation and Xbox ) . Like I said above PS has had some great games, but not generation defining .
I have been gaming since mid 80s and i do think that we are living a great gaming era. Yes, probably my favourite. We have lots of great games, indies bringing classic genres back (2D platformers, point and click adventures, top down shooters, etc), unique ideas, experimentation, diversity, japanese devs back in full force, finally CGI like graphics, games on sale at ridiculously low prices, VR that works, etc... Of course it's pretty easy to pick some greedy companies and pretend they are all we have, but ignoring all the great games available is 100% your fault. Here's a tip, start buying indie games. You will discover gem after gem. As for the old days, it's funny how you guys always remember some good games from the past, but forget hundreds of bad ones. And i don't mean bad games because the campaign was 'just 8 hours long', or because 'the female main character is ugly'. I mean bad because you paid full price for a racing game with one car and two tracks, or for a game with 20 minute campaign, or even because there was a glitch that didn't allow you to complete the campaign (and back then the 'infamous' patches couldn't save the day). Again, we are living a fantastic gaming era, only poisoned by communities of haters and kids complaing about the most ridiculous things. And of course, blind nostalgia, the usual suspect...
Paulo Lameiras I am not trying to jock on all the great experiences we have available here and now and how much visuals have improved since I started gaming since 1993 , but in the end of the day this generation has been very boring with micro transactions , DLC . Games wise this has been the best year this generation has had with Nintendo Switch , Breath of the Wild , Horizon zero dawn , the lost legacy , and Super Mario Odyssey these were some of the many amazing games that released this year . , but before this year there only a few amazing games . So I don’t think this is the best generation in gaming no (360, PS3 , and Wii , that generation was the best generation we had ).
After completing more than 600 games, I have to say that Prey is one of the best and one of the most unique games I've ever played. It is heavily inspired by System Shock, Bioshock, Dead Space, Deus Ex, and Half-Life, and interestingly enough, I think it's better then all of them. I very much liked the original Prey too, but the new one is basically better than that in every way. Unfortunately, Prey doesn't get as much praise as it deservs, because international critics wanted to ride the overblown hate train of the fans and wannabe gamers who were salty about the Prey 2 cancellation and wanted to trash this new game without any worthy reason. So I'm more than happy that you included this game on your list. I played it on PC too and it is very well optimized. It was a joy to play. Edit: Breath of the Wild is best on PC by the way with CEMU emulator :P I play it at 5120x2160 (ultrawide) with graphics mods. :D
It's easily my personal GotY, something I knew was going to be the case when I realized I had completely stopped playing Nioh, Horizon, and Breath of the Wild until I had completed all 5 main endings of Nier. Avoid spoilers; the narrative was outstanding, also my favorite of 2017. As long as you are open minded and can handle some of Yoko Taro's eccentricities, you're in for a very powerful and moving experience.
I got the game on sale and I am sooo glad I purchased it! Amazing story, great gameplay and I LOVEEE the soundtrack! Seriously just listen to the songs on youtube! Probably the best soundtrack till date. Personally, it is my 2nd most favorite game after Horizon Zero Dawn.
I'm a long time Yoko Taro fan and I have to say Nier automata is his greatest game to date. Great gameplay, beautiful art style, engaging plot with many different and interesting themes, one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a long time, and a main character with a beautiful booty. What more can you ask for?
Great list, John! And I truly back up everything you said about Sonic Mania: it's the only game in the entire year that made me smile from beginning to end. Great selection and a deserving number one!
No. 1 will surely create some arguments, but as you said this is personal top 5 favourite games for you, not top 5 most impressive games. Platforming games were your go to game as a child so it's only justified why your no.1 is what it is. Happy new year!
Dave, Tom, Richard and of course John, have a happy new year chaps. Seeing the way DF has grown over the last year... really makes me look forward as to what's so come in future.
Unexpected number 1 but nice to see a different opinion. Better than the embarrassing Eurogamer top 50 for sure. Nier Automata made my top 5 as well. Mine is as follows: 5. Hollow Knight 4. Nier: Automata 3. Nioh 2. Divinity: Original Sin 2 1. Horizon: Zero Dawn Honourable mentions to Cuphead, Assassin’s Creed Origins, Hellblade, Wolfenstein 2, Prey, and Uncharted: Lost Legacy. Sadly I haven’t played Persona 5 yet, otherwise that would have no doubt got at least a mention too.
Julien Andrew I can highly recommend it, though if you’re not normally a fan of the style, could be worth checking a couple of videos. I watched a couple of independent reviews and they sold it to me. There are lots of character classes, a ton of combat options and tactics, and the game pretty much lets you decide how you play. The game is great played solo, but played co-op is another level of brilliant. If you do end up buying it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
White Knight 5 Horizon Zero Dawn is the only PS4 exclusive in his list. Everything else is on PC as well, with Hollow Knight and Divinity on PC only (Hollow Knight also coming to Switch). Might I suggest taking your bullshit somewhere else?
White Knight 5 Interesting, considering most of the games I mentioned I played on PC. The good thing about PC is it gets me the good Microsoft exclusives too. If you're referring to the Switch though, sorry but Nintendo haven't really interested me for the last 20 years or so. Doesn't mean I don't appreciate the exceptional year they had, they're just not for me personally.
My TOP 10 from year 2017: 1. Prey 2017 2. Resident Evil 7 Biohazard 3. Tekken 7 4. Wolfenstein 2 The New Colossus 5. Evil Within 2 6. ELEX 7. Forza Motorsport 7 8. Divinity Orginal Sin 2 9. Mass Effect: Andromeda 10. Outlast 2 Sure there is more good 2017 games... But one I put on the list, are one I can fully recommend.
@Aosome23 It's not best Mass Effect overall. But We talk about 2017 games. And here MEA is't bad. I like exploration, graphics, side-quests, different races in these one. I finish game, and I saw how many work they put into this game. Even if main plot isn't satisfied, or some troll's have fun from default character facial animations. That still is good game to Me. Do You finish it?
I’m so glad you put Prey on your list. Without a doubt one of the most underrated games of the year. If you were brought up on System Shock, Deus Ex and the like then this game will tick all your boxes and then some.
My top *5* 1: Persona 5 2: Super Mario Odyssey 3: What Remains of Edith Finch 4: Prey 5: Zelda BOTW *(I don't own an xbone and have not played cuphead)*
I often wonder how many so outraged to see games like Nier get recognition over the top selling games have actually played it at all. Usually when I challenge that and ask how far they've even played through the game, they mysteriously disappear and don't comment any more. Wonder why that would be...
White Knight 5 lmao Super Mario Odyssey is a great game which I agree with I'm just impressed he didn't pick Zelda like every other outlet; take your fanboy bs somewhere else 😂
ivo It's my personal goty. It's literally perfect in my eyes. The only thing they should have changed is the title. Everything else fits in so damn well.
You guys should review games as well as analyze their performance, I know these weren't reviews but I got a good idea if I would like games I haven't yet played and that is what defines a good review in my eyes, well done
Awesome list, and serious respect for having Prey in there. It really bothers me that Prey didn't get a ton more attention. For me, that is STILL my favorite experience I've had this year, even after playing some of the other big hitters. Prey nails that old school first person exploration gameplay that I've always loved in games like Half Life, Metroid Prime, Deus Ex and more. And it does it in a totally badass sci-fi setting with atmosphere to spare. Any time I play a game from start to finish and can't put it down these days, it's a serious win. Loved it, and I really need to play more of it one of these days.
It isn't often you come across a top 5 or 10 list that doesn't make you question the sanity of OP. This year didn't nearly compete with 2013 and 2015, but was Eons better than 2014 and 2016. Knock a few cold ones back for 2017 boys. Happy gaming.
Thanks so much for this John, it's really cool to get your opinion. I didn't play Prey because it looked a little dry and predictable to me, but now I'm giving it a second thought. You're like a gaming academic at this point haha. Keep up the good work! Do more stuff like this in the future.
AWESOME list! A lot of great pick but most of all thank you so much for showing Sonic Mania some love. It seams like so many people forgot about this gem!
A very well justified and presented list. Great work mate, really enjoyed that. Have a good New Year, looking forward to more of your videos next year :)
The best top 5 list I've seen. This is the only one that made any sense. Finally no Nintendo worship. Finally some recognition for my favourites. Linneman, start a website of your own like IGN or Giant Bomb and you could become an influential force to be reckoned with!
It's nice to see a different game make it to the top list, but don't neglect the fact Mario Odyssey is in the list as well. A little story was even tagged to it about his love for Super Mario World and how SM64 revolutionized 3D gaming. Prey was a surprise though. Never heard of it yet it sounds like a great game.
The only one that makes sense....to you!...your opinion isn't the only correct one pal. Must be horrible for you to accept most of the industry thought Zelda was game of the year.
John once again proving his superior taste and being the most iconic of the df team, elevating all around him to greater heights. Weird to see a list in reverse order, nier automata is easily the best game in the past 10 years and 2017 was a fantastic time overall. The most satisfying thing being seeing the western industry collapse into itself.
Prince Dizzy Either way I'm gonna get it for PS4, I still haven't bought my PC. And BTW there's a fan made patch that fixes the issues for the PC version.
All your choices tell me your heart is leading the way as most of these are real retro inspired. I think I'll have to give Prey a try now. Always watch your videos, thanks for all the great content this year! Happy New year to all the DF team.😜
I thought it was interesting that most of his coverage of Prey and Nier were technical difficulties but they were among his favorite games. It's nice to know tech issues don't prevent him from recognizing it can still be a great game.
as a Nintendo fan, I totally agree with the omission of Zelda Breath of the Wild from the top 5. It's an impressive game, and it innovates the open-world genre a lot, but it has a few critical flaws, which only start to appear after about the 50 hours mark (which is the reason why, in my opinion, it got such high scores in the reviews - most reviewers don't play the games they review for more than that - they don't have the time to even if they wanted, 'cause reviews gotta release on day one because business). The biggest flaw being - in my opinion - exactly the thing it's been praised so much for - that is, the way it pushes the player to explore the game world with no incentives at all other than their sheer curiosity. At first, this works quite well, but after a bit of playing everything becomes more and more repetitive, the lack of story for quests really starts to hurt. The second big flaw is the lack of character progression. Throughout the story you never feel like getting better, because there's no leveling up and, most importantly, because weapons break. Sure, armours are more durable and you have more health, but that just increases your resistance, you don't really feel "stronger", like you have more skills or more powerful attacks. Combats just last longer. This brings us to the third big flaw: combat. Combat is very fun and quite fleshed out, but since there's no character progression, there also isn't any incentive to engage in a fight with the enemies scattered around the map; considering the weapon-breaking system it's actually the opposite, thus the combat soon becomes a boring task. Very little variation in the types of enemies adds even more insult to the injury. Finally, the last flaw are shrines. There's a lot of them, but they're so easy that they just become a repetitive task.
I agree except with the weapon durability and shrines. I liked both of them. Weapon durability forces you to test out other weapons and in a game like Breath of The Wild permanent weapons wouldn't work. As you could just rush to Hyrule castle and grab some OP weapon and, well every other weapon would be useless. They would have to revise the entire weapon mechanic in that case. I liked the small puzzles within the shrines. I found them quite fun and enjoyable, though I feel like they could have changed the looks and atmosphere of some of them, and made them more difficult.
hey, you're totally allowed to have your opinion, there's no objective truth in this case, but if you just say "i disagree" it's difficult to have any meaningful discussion. Anyway, my point is: what's the point in having 100+ hours worth of content, if you get bored after 50 hours (or maybe even 25, depending on the player)? that's my point. In that sense, I enjoyed Skyrim a lot more.
I only played for 6-8 hours before I got bored with Zelda, for the reasons you mentioned. Glad to hear that it would not have gotten any better if I pushed on. The only thing that seemed interesting were shrines with their puzzle like setting but you're saying they don't get any more variety (or complexity) later on.
My top 10 in no specific order: 1. South park The fractured but whole 2. Super Mario Odyssey 3. Tekken 7 4. Zelda BotW 5. Persona 5 6. Crash Bandicoot Nsane Trilogy 7. Sonic Mania 8. Injustice 2 9. Doki Doki literature club 10. Resident Evil 7
Goodish list, Zelda is a touchstone in gaming. Akin to Mario 64, henceforth there'll be pre & post Breath of the Wild. I've lovingly sunk over 220 hours in;probably the most important game in the last 10 years. Sonic Mania is a great game, but sonic games in general are basic time trials, can't compare to any Mario game just a different league
Francisco Fernandez, Jr. Zelda is an overrated children's game. What is so special about it that your putting it into the Mario 64 category for watershed gaming moments? Bland open world that all the Nintendo fans claim is amazing, destructible weapons that detract from the gameplay. Seriously, if any game is representative of gaming getting it's shit together and moving forward while making everybody stop and take notice, It would be the witcher 3.
Sandor Clegane exactly! People say that BoTW revolutionized Open world gaming but I cant see how it did it. It has barely any enemy types, the world is so empty. The weapons can be broken, far cry 2 from 2008 had that already. The story was just a copy and paste from other zelda's with no twists. The physics are nicely done and you can go anywhere but that's hardly enough to call it a mario 64 or witcher 3 lol Zelda just stole everything from other open world games and slapped the Zelda name on it so people love it. If it didnt had the zelda skin over it, people would say it is a mediocre game.
Anis Benhamou another reason that it is so very overrated is the fact that it launched with a new console and people just got swept away by the hype. I got my switch launch day with Zelda. I really enjoyed the game at first, but the more I played the more apparent it was that the game was really boring. The open world is so bland. No character, no flavor. Take a horse back ride through no man's land or novigrad and immediately get swept away by brilliant world design in the witcher 3. The more I played Zelda the more condescending it felt, I'm a grown man being talked to like a child in every interaction, and people had the nerve to say Zelda had grown up and stopped targeting children.
Sandor Clegane ikr! I never understood how they always say it is more mature. It is really just a dumbed down kids version of Witcher 3 or Horizon zero Dawn.
Cool list, I'd love to see you make more content like this! (By that I mean videos that are not just focused on the tech side of things) Though having said that I can't wait for the next episode of DFretro. ^^
Had a blast in 2016's highest rated and best looking game of all time Uncharted 4. 2017's highest rated games Zelda, Mario & Persona. Then obviously Horizon, Bloodborne, MGSV & Nier Automata (sequels to console exclusives), Gravity Rush 2, Last Guardian, Crash, Yakuza, Wipeout, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted Lost Legacy etc. Can't wait for Kingdom Hearts 3, Shadow of the Colossus Remake, Ni No Kuni 2 (sequel), FF7 Remake, Death Stranding, Yakuza 6, Last of Us 2, Red Dead 2, Spiderman, God of War, Detroit, Days Gone, Ghost of Tsushima & more. Hoping for new PS exclusive FromSoftware game that can top Bloodborne & a Spyro remake. Obviously Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime 4 & more from Nintendo aswell :)
Nintendo won the most awards this year, and their game got in the Top 5 here as well.. THis was the first list where i have seen Sonic Mania on a list at all. lol So yeah congrats on being some youtubers top 5 list...
NieR: Automata was one of the best games of all time in my opinion. For everything that it does, its tied with the Witcher 3 for my favourite game of all time. It absolutely deserved it.
It really didn't surprise me that John who does the retro look also picked 'retro' feeling games. Nier may not be totally retro but it has a LOT of retro mini games and moments but Mario is not much different from other 3D Mario games, Cuphead has 80's gameplay in a 30's cartoon style aesthetic and Sonic could easily have been released 20-25yrs ago. Not criticising but its not surprising that these games were picked by John - who spends much of his time enthusing over retro games/consoles and picks retro feeling games for his top 5...
1: Mario Odyssey 2: Breath of the Wild 3: Sonic Mania 4: Horizon Zero Dawn 5: Cuphead Honestly 2017 impressed me. Some of my old favorite developers came back swinging, Indies really started strutting their stuff and EA has finally been put in their place. What a time to be alive, thank you to all the developers out there that care about making great games like these for the fans, not the money.
#1 was actually extremely surprising.
very surprising lol
My jaw dropped. And you know what, I wasn't mad with the choice. It's a great game!
It was. And I was happy to see Sonic get some love. Heard nothing but great things about this game.
True, this #1 is my #4 for 2017 :D
Xiphos Gaming everyone else put Bad Breath of The Wild or Horizon Zero Fun as the top 2
Kudos for doing an actual "personal GOTY" list.
Literally the only journalist I care about going into 2018
Yeah! Tom, Richard, Dave... fuck you! I'm kidding of course, Happy New Year guys!
go away because (somewhat stupidly) one of the dictionary definition of “literally” actually means “figuratively” now. Stupid, but times change, huh.
Also because they really analyse games and have proper knowledge, instead of most other journalists that just share opinions and not facts.
Erik2Ammo They are superior then it comes to the technical aspect yes. But that is the main thing they focus on, and therefore reviews and other analysis are needed.
Literally
Finally some love for Prey.
Yeah Prey was hidden under shadows uff... such a GREAT Game!...
Prey was amazing. It would have been my GOTY if it wasn't for Divinity: Original Sin 2.
This year was great, so many good games but out of them all Prey was my game of the year; Was so glad to see it mentioned here.
EL DIABLO Alien Isolation... is your game!... if you like Alien franchise, and space terrors, with survival horror type, then that is for you!
prey was an awesome gaming experience.....
Woah!?
Game experience and not game specs!?
*_This is interesting_*
thebahooplamaster for real!! About time.
The whole point of this channel is specs and game tech though.
Ludens Be that as it may that is not what this channel is about. Gaming is a visual medium and this channel is all about that.
Ludens I never complained that the channel put up this video. I like it. My comment was just about those that complain and say "about time" when this isn't the channels focus and thus should remain special episodes.
Ludens I know. Again, that was never my point or intention.
Unlike a lot of other goty videos I feel this guy actually picked his personal favourites rather than the standard games a lot of journalists feel they have to pick...
I generally hang around Giant Bomb and Waypoint, and I saw these 5 games pop up quite a bit in GOTY lists. 2017 has just kind of been a stacked year in general.
that’s why it’s “the linneman collection”
Finally someone with an opinion that isn't the same canned response like any other games journalist.
Pauls In my honest opinion, Zelda is the by far best game this year. Doesnt mean my opinion isnt fresh or anything.
Or wanking over that rehash Zelda game with no story, terrible characters and boring open world.
popa chopa who do u think u are to tell people what they like or dont like?
Whoa!? John gave GOTY to Troll and I? Unbelievable.
I need a Switch, will definitely be getting one next year to go with my XB1X.
Happy gaming everyone.
TheMrAntoMean Sea of Thieves, Forza, Forza Horizon, Halo, Gears of War, Halo Wars, Quantum Break and the best console multi plats say hello.
TheMrAntoMean You people can't just let one comment go without pushing your exclusives on us?
A lot of us don't want your throwaway singleplayer exclusives.
If someone wants an xbox, let them have one. Don't tell them to not get one.
Kyle Key Xbox is trash? That's your uneducated opinion, but that's fine.
No-one actually cares what you think fortunately :)
I picked up a switch Literally yesterday along with Mario oddessy and within 10 hours it instantly soared to my personal game of the year, it's insanely fun and exploring to find moons and regional coins is a wonderful experience
I recommend sonic mania on switch and splattoon 2.
Excellent choice! Hope you have a lot of fun with your Switch.
10 hours? You game more in one day than I can in a week
John James Rambo What's more sad is that you care lol.
John James Rambo what's more unbelievable is how you actually care, pretty sad if you ask me
1.- Persona 5
2.- Breath of the Wild
3.- Mario Odyssey
A game of the year list with Mario but without Zelda? That is interesting.
Slytzel Idek
Botw is just another open world game.
lolsmhtbqh first time i heard someone say zelda is grindy lol
As a turtle lover who has longstanding issues with the Mario series I can say this is not a game for me.
IconOfGin Lmfao nice joke dude
My top 5:
Horizon Zero Dawn
Uncharted The Lost Legacy
Crash Bandicoot
Wolfenstein 2
Resident Evil 7
WH250398 i see youre a playstation gamer (nothing wrong with that, ps is awesome)
Stupidadi
Always :) since 2004!
guys you officially made me a lifetime fan. your daily work unpurposely serves as fuel for gaming platform war and at the climax of hostilities your top5 game of the year is entirely about 2D and DoubleA games at best. Congrats!
It's not a game of the year list without NieR Automata. Decent list and well explained.
It's good to see that pretty graphics don't get GOTY
sonic mania is still better looking than most games today
david diaz Graphics are really important for me. Sonic Mania is a game I’d consider to be very pretty. If a game looks bad, it’s difficult to enjoy, but it’s not about shaders or polygon count. It’s about the art style.
Sonic mania is pretty tho
Or Zelda and Nintendo name alone.
Here is my top 5 (I haven't completed Nier Automata yet)
1. Breath of the Wild
2. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
3. Persona 5
4. Super Mario Odyssey
5. The End Is Nigh
5. Sonic Mania
referral madness So what?
Is the end of nigh like meat boy?
David Ribeiro Yep.
You have two 5s. That's not allowed, it's cheating.
White Knight 5 I can't pick one over the other. :)
I'm not alone. I'M NOT ALONE!
Man, I love this channel.
#5. Cuphead
#4. The Evil Within 2
#3. Resident Evil 7
#2. Super Mario Odyssey
#1. Nier Automata
salem alzaabi great list!
salem alzaabi
I have yet to play quite a few on this list but I do plan to.
#1 Legend of Zelda Breath of The Wild ( I really don't expect anything to top it out of 2017 games)
#2 Persona 5
#3 Prey
1) Horizon ZD
2) Uncharted LL
3) Hidden Agenda
4) The legend of Zelda: BotW
5) Super Mario Odyssey
VLAD URBAN
Wow !
Hidden Agenda, i didn't expect that.
Idk why people are getting triggered over HIS favourite games of the year
AaaaAaa people don't care for subjectivity or personal opinions. If they had their way Zelda would be at the top of every single top 10 list
Because as an Ouya owner why doesn't he have any of our excellent exclusives? He has one from one for Playstation, one for Xbox, one for Nintendo, and even one from former console maker Sega. But no none from our excellent exclusive lineup. Downvoted.
It's the Xboners that doesn't have any games that gets triggered.
Pauls What do you have against nerds?
MR. AWESOME you realise that there was the same ammount of Xbox Exclusives as PS4 exclusives on this list right?
Not only is Linneman's game taste great (both retro and newschool). But whomever choose "Simon Stålenhag - Fluvial Beat Deposits" for opening track was a genius. Keep em vids coming, you guys rule! :D
*whoever chose
Hey! very similar to my list, alphabetically:
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- NieR:Automata
- Prey
- Sonic Mania
Mario Odyssey might've made my list,
but no Switch yet.
Still rocking Wii U !!

Horizon was boring to play, rest of list seems correct
yes i also think horizon is boring also
res evil 7
try hollow knight...
number 11
Great list. The amount of fantastic game that had to be out of the list just proves how good this generation has been!
Paulo Lameiras oh yeah best gen ever... Lootboxs, dlcs, microtransations... 👌
Sonic Mania earned every bit of praise it got.
This game literally brought me to tears with how great it was.
Samuel McConen play tropical freeze then
You have issues.
Informative Gamer S Best issues I could've ever hoped for :)
+Samuel McConen Did Frogger and Bomberman make you cry also?
Lol, tears? It’s a good platformer, but to cry over it is strange.
Koncz Dávid What rig do you need for that resolution? :D
My rig:
EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW2 GAMING iCX 8GB
Intel Core i5-6600K (overclocked to 4.5GHz on all cores)
G.Skill Ripjaws V 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz
Koncz Dávid that doesnt seem to beefy i guess cemu is greatly improved
"that doesn't seem to beefy" LOL
nh k A GTX1080 is not “beefy“?
Nier is my personal game of the year. Adored the thing!
Nier is old why are you just now playing it
ok i think it's time i buy Nier Automata. Seems to be one i see over in these kind of videos.
Play the other games before nier automata it wil make it that much better
Sounds good. Shame it's not in the Steam sale. I'll have to look into some reviews. Or buy it when i'm drunk :P
What more can you ask for?
one of the better year-end lists
Easily.
Watching your video while it's new year here in the Philippines. Nice selection and quite a unique game of the year! Happy New Year guys!
An interesting and refreshing list. My 3 favorites are Zelda BoTW, Persona 5 and Horizon Zero Dawn in no specific order.
Thankyou for including Prey. That game is incredibly underappreciated.
Yes John you fucking legend!! Sonic Mania GOTY! :)
Amazing game, id definitely recommend picking it up on Console, i know the delayed PC port had huge issues with DRM.
Prince Dizzy
Prince dizzy trying his best to shit on PC again
Dave, Tom, Richard and of course John, have a happy new year chaps. Seeing the way DF has grown over the last year... really makes me look forward as to what's so come in future.
My top 5 games this year without order:
Nioh complete edition
Evil Within 2
Horizon Zero Down
Prey
Nier
+ FF12 Zodiac age as a remaster
Great list John, played every game on your list except Prey and I love the positives that you bring up about the games!
Unexpected number 1 but nice to see a different opinion. Better than the embarrassing Eurogamer top 50 for sure. Nier Automata made my top 5 as well. Mine is as follows:
5. Hollow Knight
4. Nier: Automata
3. Nioh
2. Divinity: Original Sin 2
1. Horizon: Zero Dawn
Honourable mentions to Cuphead, Assassin’s Creed Origins, Hellblade, Wolfenstein 2, Prey, and Uncharted: Lost Legacy. Sadly I haven’t played Persona 5 yet, otherwise that would have no doubt got at least a mention too.
Andy B I've heard soooo many good things about Divinity 2 but I usually dont touch CRPGs. Should I still jump in?
Julien Andrew I can highly recommend it, though if you’re not normally a fan of the style, could be worth checking a couple of videos. I watched a couple of independent reviews and they sold it to me. There are lots of character classes, a ton of combat options and tactics, and the game pretty much lets you decide how you play. The game is great played solo, but played co-op is another level of brilliant. If you do end up buying it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
Might I suggest you come out from Sony's safe space and try other games on other platforms?
I love how you put so much emphasis on the music, I really believe gameplay is first, then music and then graphics.
Alien Soldier reference, where are all my Sega Channel bros at?!
*PREY!!!!!!!!!* Finally someone else recognised this masterpiece! Mad respect
My TOP 10 from year 2017:
1. Prey 2017
2. Resident Evil 7 Biohazard
3. Tekken 7
4. Wolfenstein 2 The New Colossus
5. Evil Within 2
6. ELEX
7. Forza Motorsport 7
8. Divinity Orginal Sin 2
9. Mass Effect: Andromeda
10. Outlast 2
Sure there is more good 2017 games...
But one I put on the list, are one I can fully recommend.
Slawek Michalski Finally someone add outlast 2 in a list top 10 too, I think the game is great, and kinda underrated.
get a switch
@Aosome23
It's not best Mass Effect overall. But We talk about 2017 games.
And here MEA is't bad. I like exploration, graphics, side-quests, different races in these one.
I finish game, and I saw how many work they put into this game. Even if main plot isn't satisfied,
or some troll's have fun from default character facial animations.
That still is good game to Me. Do You finish it?
I’m so glad you put Prey on your list. Without a doubt one of the most underrated games of the year. If you were brought up on System Shock, Deus Ex and the like then this game will tick all your boxes and then some.
My top *5*
1: Persona 5
2: Super Mario Odyssey
3: What Remains of Edith Finch
4: Prey
5: Zelda BOTW
*(I don't own an xbone and have not played cuphead)*
Lucas S nice list but thats only 5 games, not 10
Excellent games but your math needs a bit of work.
As for Cuphead, you don't need an Xbox really just a PC will do
Cuphead probably could run on a tablet.
3840 2160 blablablaps4
Very solid list. Great taste in games both old and new. 2017 was such an amazing year for games.
Haha knowing John I should’ve guessed he’d go with Sonic Mania for his game of the year lol!
Whoa! I screamed with excitement when you picked Sonic Mania. Thank you! I’m glad I’m not alone in picking as my favorite game of 2017.
Nier Automata in the Top 5? Sonic Mania as #1?!?!? *NO ZELDA IN TOP 5???*
I see you're a man of good taste, great choices John. 👌
I often wonder how many so outraged to see games like Nier get recognition over the top selling games have actually played it at all. Usually when I challenge that and ask how far they've even played through the game, they mysteriously disappear and don't comment any more. Wonder why that would be...
Richard Ferreyra Definitely not biased at all lmfao
Yeah, but Super Mario Odyssey DID make it to his list. Whine about that, fanboy..
White Knight 5 lmao Super Mario Odyssey is a great game which I agree with I'm just impressed he didn't pick Zelda like every other outlet; take your fanboy bs somewhere else 😂
AKSBSU Seriously dude it was my first Yoko Taro game but once I got to Route C I knew I was in for a wild ride
Finally someone chooses the correct GOTY 👌
spooksyoh yeah, then where's life of black tiger?
I've not seen it on nearly as many game of the year lists as I was hoping to, so happy to see it get top billing here
There is no "correct" GOTY
Glad to see you gave Prey some love. It's a gem that's gonna be missed by alot of people.
This video is awesome, thank you for not making a top 5 goty cookie cutter list!
The only thing I hate about these review/top games videos from John is that we only get one a year. This man gets video games.
My Top 5:
5. Cuphead
4. Uhmmmm.....
3. Uhmmmmm....
2. Uhmmmmmmm....
1. Uhmmmmmmmmm...
I spent all my year playing CS GO for more tha 300 Hours. :(
Amazing list! Loved it. Truth is that there were so many amazing game of the year worthy games this year. Best year in gaming
The best Unbiased content on RUclips stay true to the gamers DF
lddlmurphy Unbiased while paid by Microsoft
Nice list, good to see someone enjoyed a little bit of everything 2017!
Also, it just feels right to play Sonic mania on the switch. Nintendo is where platformers should all live.
Mike Morales Indie titles too. On other consoles, these games just get buried under all the AAA offerings..
Great list Linneman! Keep being awesome DF team! Merry-new-year-mas to all
I'm playing PREY right now. Great game.
ivo It's my personal goty. It's literally perfect in my eyes. The only thing they should have changed is the title. Everything else fits in so damn well.
I got it in the 2 for £25 psn sale along with The Last Guardian, PREY didn't get enough love for sure, but neither did TLG in my humble opinion.
You guys should review games as well as analyze their performance, I know these weren't reviews but I got a good idea if I would like games I haven't yet played and that is what defines a good review in my eyes, well done
Top game 2017 was definitely The Wichard 3 - Lead to the Better
Awesome list, and serious respect for having Prey in there.
It really bothers me that Prey didn't get a ton more attention. For me, that is STILL my favorite experience I've had this year, even after playing some of the other big hitters. Prey nails that old school first person exploration gameplay that I've always loved in games like Half Life, Metroid Prime, Deus Ex and more. And it does it in a totally badass sci-fi setting with atmosphere to spare. Any time I play a game from start to finish and can't put it down these days, it's a serious win. Loved it, and I really need to play more of it one of these days.
I still think persona 5 is the best game of 2017
Lol please
Eyyyy it's my favourite game of all time xD
agreed
me too man
Way too niche though.
It isn't often you come across a top 5 or 10 list that doesn't make you question the sanity of OP. This year didn't nearly compete with 2013 and 2015, but was Eons better than 2014 and 2016.
Knock a few cold ones back for 2017 boys. Happy gaming.
Chrisjb1983 i thought this was one of, if not the best year this decade. each to their own, though
Stupidadi It is one of the best, without a doubt. 2013 and 2015 had some power house line ups too.
Chrisjb1983 I game since 35 years and 2017 was clearly one of the best years ever. 2018 looks even better though
1. Nioh
2. Resident Evil VII: biohazard
3. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
4. Horizon: Zero Dawn
5. The Evil Within 2
Well I see PS4 fanboy stamped on your forehead lmao!!
Thanks so much for this John, it's really cool to get your opinion. I didn't play Prey because it looked a little dry and predictable to me, but now I'm giving it a second thought. You're like a gaming academic at this point haha. Keep up the good work! Do more stuff like this in the future.
nier automata goty of this year for me....music,gameplay,story fuck yeah best game....hellblade also gets a point from me
I know the PC port was a mess but i really enjoyed the game on PS4.
lol nier runs at 900p without AA on the normal ps4
LinusMiningTips it's 60 fps though, right?
Did you play the other nier games or are you just a filthy casual who got into it because of others hype
Prince Dizzy Yet better than the Ps4 version.
AWESOME list! A lot of great pick but most of all thank you so much for showing Sonic Mania some love. It seams like so many people forgot about this gem!
My top 5:
5. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
4. Splatoon 2
3. Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
2. Super Mario Odyssey
1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Emil Ellénius hahaha
Emil Ellénius i see what you did there
david diaz And it wasn't even intentional. Just a lucky coincidence.
Switch only gamer, right?
Rei dos Vermes Correct.
I don't mind Nintendo worship I'm just glad there isn't Sony worship, which is far worse imo.
***AND TOP CONSOLE OF THE YEAR PS4 PRO*****
A great year for all platforms. 2018 looks even better, I personally can't wait.
So PUBG-Forza-Horizon....etc For work
And these five games for play;")
Omg Digital Foundry should start reviewing video games starting 2018. You guys are totally legit!
I really need to pick Nier Automata up, the game looks super fun.
Id definitely recommend picking the game up on Console, the PC port has suffered numerous issues and SquareEnix still refuse to fix the broken port.
Prince Dizzy
Either way I'm gonna get it for PS4, I still haven't bought my PC.
And BTW there's a fan made patch that fixes the issues for the PC version.
The patch doesn't fix random crashes and unplayable cut scenes.
A Ps4 fanboy recommends the Ps4 version, who would've thought that?
All your choices tell me your heart is leading the way as most of these are real retro inspired. I think I'll have to give Prey a try now. Always watch your videos, thanks for all the great content this year! Happy New year to all the DF team.😜
NieR Automata is in the list, my respect goes for this guy.
Yup, i know the PC port was a mess but i really enjoyed the game on Console.
I thought it was interesting that most of his coverage of Prey and Nier were technical difficulties but they were among his favorite games. It's nice to know tech issues don't prevent him from recognizing it can still be a great game.
Prince Dizzy Even when a new year
starts you have to lie? You are such an attention seeking kid, sad.
Pleasantly surprised to see a list without BotW at the top, and with some really good justifications! Good video!
as a Nintendo fan, I totally agree with the omission of Zelda Breath of the Wild from the top 5.
Yeah... Nope to everything you said. Not only that, but games like Horizon take around those 50 hours to complete at 100%, so your point?
hey, you're totally allowed to have your opinion, there's no objective truth in this case, but if you just say "i disagree" it's difficult to have any meaningful discussion. Anyway, my point is: what's the point in having 100+ hours worth of content, if you get bored after 50 hours (or maybe even 25, depending on the player)? that's my point. In that sense, I enjoyed Skyrim a lot more.
I mean, just opinions. I have seen many people that think that Prey is really flawed.
My top 10 in no specific order:
1. South park The fractured but whole
2. Super Mario Odyssey
3. Tekken 7
4. Zelda BotW
5. Persona 5
6. Crash Bandicoot Nsane Trilogy
7. Sonic Mania
8. Injustice 2
9. Doki Doki literature club
Sandor Clegane Keep crying fellas
Cool list, I'd love to see you make more content like this! (By that I mean videos that are not just focused on the tech side of things) Though having said that I can't wait for the next episode of DFretro. ^^
Love seeing Nier, good list!
This year was so good for gaming that I literally haven’t even played a single one of these games on the list. Let that sink in!
Mosh isnt mgsv old? if i remeber correctly it came in 2015
shabbar hassan he posts this on every single digital foundry video. Ignore him.
People get baited by this guy so much.
there's no fucking way you wrote this comment so quickly,i can't believe you actually wrote it and saved it so you can post it on the comment section.
Mosh yeah youre just pathetic a symbol for the entire Playstation community
So glad to see Prey get some much deserved love! Such an incredible game, that so many ignored.
JOYCONMEN
That was a refreshing and unexpected list. I own every game on this list but have not comp them. This list will help me prioritize.
Well done Nintendo!
aaron wise You mean Sega!
Nintendo won the most awards this year, and their game got in the Top 5 here as well.. THis was the first list where i have seen Sonic Mania on a list at all. lol So yeah congrats on being some youtubers top 5 list...
Pretty funny how sonic mania a game that is retro themed did better than the newer sonic forces
No I do not mean Sega. I mean well done Nintendo. If I meant well done Sega I would of said "sega".
aaron wise
I was referring to the second reply
1: Mario Odyssey
2: Breath of the Wild
3: Sonic Mania
4: Horizon Zero Dawn
5: Cuphead
Honestly 2017 impressed me. Some of my old favorite developers came back swinging, Indies really started strutting their stuff and EA has finally been put in their place. What a time to be alive, thank you to all the developers out there that care about making great games like these for the fans, not the money.
HORIZON ZERO AWARDS
my top 5 goty
5. horizon zero dawn
4. mario odyssey
3. splatoon 2
2. yakuza 0
1. fire emblem echoes
My top 5 games I have played in 2017--
5:Stardew Valley
4: PUBG
3:Mario odyssey
2:Rocket league
1:Zelda breath of the wild
wtf where is minecraft. that is the only game that exists and every other game is ripoff
This was a great and honest list. Glad to see Prey getting some love!
Gran Turismo Sport
Definitely
