John is finally a friend not just a colleague😂
What's it gonna be next?!
Captain Jack Aubrey of the Royal Navy Paramour😂
I love the character development
Yes but his now a friend written in rainbow colors which makes me worry they might have gotten too friendly.😋

33:14 Death Stranding _(John's #1)_
@Moogle Midgar Really? Control, Metro Exodus, Gears 5 and Death Stranding have shit graphics?
Gears 5 won. Fail stranding graphics is so overrated, an empty world with ZERO interaction.
@Moogle Midgar Death Stranding have wonderful assets, Control have the most advanced ray tracing implementations in games to date. Even COD MW only implement ray tracing for shadows. But I agree with you that COD MW is better than Metro Exodus. As for Gears 5, my opinion is that game have very good performance for the fidelity it offers.
You should know it now bud... Your opinion is off by a long way. Upgrade your TV. you can get 4k tech these days ✌️
9900k/2080Ti on 3440x1440 I have yet to see shit graphics, Control looks amazing, I played through it originally on a 8700k/1080ti and was decent but a second time through with RTX was completely different experience, just a shame RTX really isnt being implemented more..
Diehardman has a scene in the end of death stranding that is _absolutely_ insane.. probably one of the best looking scenes in gaming
aL3891 oh yeah that looked photorealistic, especially when he dropped to his knees
I don't know how they got his eyes to look so fantastic. It's all I could look at while he was on screen, it's a shame that the rest of the character's eyes didn't match the same level of quality.
The actor confirmed he really had the snot coming out his nose! He really put that scene out there!
Said the same thing, that scene is as good or better than any graphics on any platform, including RTX games on PC. Absolutely insane.
Friend & Colleague: A DF Story
Lol
The friends and colleagues we made along the way
Yay, A Plague Tale getting its deserved recognition, really great lower budget title! Can't wait for the sequel which is apparently already being worked on
I thought it was mediocre. The story wasn't that great and it really should have been for that type of game
Pretty game. Decent voice acting. Interminable stealth based on instakill fail states.
Yeah I recently got it, I was very impressed by it.
Though a little longer to flesh out the story a bit more would’ve been nice.
It was actually one of my favorite games this year. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and overall setting.
You got a long wait - it's currently slated for 2022 as Asobo Studio are completely tied up right now making Microsoft Flight Simulator
HZD won 2017, now DS for 2019, respect to Guerrilla and the extraordinary Decimal engine
It's decima not decimal
to me star citizen wins every year
@@tommybull6578 that's a garbage game that is never gonna release
@@tommybull6578 lol, are u drunk?
@@lightyagami8645 Thats an opinion that no one asked for.
Death Stranding is one of the most beautiful games I have ever played, the atmosphere is rivaling games like Okami and Shadow of the Colossus for me. thanks for giving it the recognition it deserves!
I think Luigi's Mansion 3 deserved a place on this list. The animations of that game are amazing like the Disney Pixar moves.
Great how they play along with the friend and colleague joke!
I don't get it. is it a reference to something else?
@@childofvenus3781 one of thier previous videos Alex puts a lot of emphasis on the "friend" at the end of the video
It's the one where they talk about the Xbox series x reveal
@@TaimatCR It goes further. It was one of John's videos where he says something along the lines of "last time I was joined by my friend, now I'm joined by my colleague Alex."
@@childofvenus3781 They always said friend and colleague, but one video John had his friend Audi on and the next similar video he said "I'm joined by not my friend Audi, but my colleague Alex" and the comment section freaked out. Obviously just a minor slip, but Alex jokingly emphasizes friend now after the reaction.
So they're dating?
(Re-)Watching this in april 2020 and hearing John say “next year is gonna get crazier...” (@39:40) brought a tear to my eye. But overall it was great fun hearing two nerds geeking out over stuff that I don’t even notice, let alone understand, half the time! Here’s hoping that the new consoles will not be delayed into 2021 and we will get to enjoy many more videos oh-ing and ah-ing over the next gen’s leap in performance, graphical and otherwise!
so true man
to me death stranding is a win because of one aspect that accelerates graphic experience but not many people are talking about it. it's not about how it looks, but how it moves. the physics of death stranding, how the legs interact with different terrains, how in intense times the expression of sam is not wooden, face expressions, etc. skyrim could look very good with mods, but the physics and how to character moves will never be replaced by any mods to respond such details of the environment, the movement and expression will always be wooden
What about RDR2? Completely maxed out on PC, it is the best looking game I've played (haven't played metro exodus yet). Why did it not even get mentioned?
@@mr.c.3760 I was expecting them to mention it, but they probably didn't because it's actually a game from 2018. It was a timed exclusive, so the PC got its version in 2019.
Spot on, I hate how people say all the time "heavily modded Skyrim looks soooo next gen, better than anything else"
Frankly, those people are blind. That engine and its animations were already outdated even at the game's launch in 2011. Put it against ANY decent game in the last 6-7 years and it pales in comparison. The physics of the engine are terrible.
The worst part is that they still use some variant of that dated engine for Fallout games.
@@Mikri90 yeah who said skyrim with mod look beast actually a sad person, i watched a bunch of skyrim mod on youtube and it looks old and fake.
Yep, but DS is a walking simulator and Skyrim is a full game. Physics can improve in DS cause the world is almost empty.
Good job DF in 2019 - Looking forward to your excellent content in 2020 with the new consoles!!
No wonder you like 60 fps games. Who wouldn't and I really hope that will be the focus of next-gen. And not something asinine as 8K graphics.
8k much more easy to sell. And it's easy to fake.
The priority is eliminating pop-up. That is an immersion-breaker.
@@easter3000 They'll both probably slap some "8K ready" stickers on their stuff. Like being able to play 8K photo's and video's lol. i'm not sure the average consumer is interested the coming year or 2, especially if they see 8k TV prices. Also, 4K TV's are finally "Cheap" since the past year or 2. Many people still need to upgrade to 4K.
microsoft means 8k movies not games
@@Midwinter2 You mean texture pop-in???
Very nice! This feels like a bonus for me, since John was saying goodbye for the year at the end of his previous standalone video. It's always nice to have more great content! Happy New Year und Auf Wiedersehen!
Trust DF to place 90s games in top graphics of 2019 lists
Norman Reedus looks so confused in death stranding all the time, which is quite representative of what the player feels, which makes for a starkly immersive experience.

Awesome finale (?) for 2019 - well done, guys! Just became a Digital Foundry patr(e)on on the occasion. Please keep up the excellent work!
The fact that they used a Shining Force 2 soundtrack for the Friend and Colleague part is enough reason for me to give this video a like.
I love the MGS interface
A Plague Tale: Innocence used Quixel Megascans assets.
So did Metro Exodus and Death Stranding
Happy Holidays to the DF staff. We appreciate all of your work. Cheers 🍻
John, Alex. It's been a pleasure. Looking forward to another year of DF.
Having played them all on a 2080 super (minus DS), Metro Exodus, is the game that stands out the most. It's the game I want to go back to play the most and I've never played either of the prequels for it. It is just insanely gorgeous and atmospheric with Ray tracing pumped up! Best graphical game I've ever played!
highly recommend last light.
Schoolship Last Light was my favorite of the three fershizzle
Metro Exodus and Gears 5 were stunning beautiful!
Yet death stranding puts them both to shame in a ridiculous way. Wait til you get it on your PC so you won't have to pretend like it's not the best looking game this year just because you're a pc fanboy

Despite all the stupid criticism Death Stranding for me was the GOTY hands down.
Fernando MP nah, the gameplay just wasn’t fun at all, the story wasn’t terrible but was very convoluted, but at least the graphical presentation was excellent. It should have been a film, not a game.
I found it a very kojima game, it really doesnt feel like the game that appeals to a wide audience.

You guys are technical AF!! Love the analysis fella's!! Keep up the great work!
Ah, love the shining force ii reference during Alex's amazing #1 intro.
Death Stranding and Gears 5 are the usual example of the end of life of a console circle were the developers know so much about the system and had twick their engines to the best level possible to fully unitilize the system. I bet Ghost of Tsushima will be another such title when it comes out next year and by the end of the year it may be the only title that makes it to such a video despite being on previous consoles by then and not having ray tracing etc. Well The last of Us II may also make it.
Love what you guys do on this youtube platform
You guys are underrated
Great content ...and instructive too !
Looking at this video and their choices, I’d say they are highly overrated. This list was HORRIBLE!
You do realize this is actually a slight offshoot of Eurogamer, right?
Martin Holik how? The rest of there videos are great, especially for tech enthusiasts like me.
I love that MetalGearSolid codec screen for this video! Glad to see I wasnt the only one that enojyed Death Stranding.
Agree with every game on this list. While this year may not have been so good in terms of quality game releases, the jump in graphical presentation continues to get better year after year.
Ive been playing games for 20 years and this year has blown me away with some of the games on this list.
Im playing through Control right now with RTX and its absolutely mindblowing!
As always, great job DF, this is my favorite channel on YT! Keep up the good work :)

I love you guys, such a great two man team filled with enthusiasm and knowledge.
Great choices! Proud to say I own both of your top 2 picks and most of your runners up.
Hahahaha love the og MGS interface and music. Massive throwback
A Plague Tale looks amazing, but I wish we could get a remaster with RT since the fly in the graphical ointment is the SSAO shadows always flickering at the edge of the screen as geometry moves in and out. The art is amazing in Plague Tale, I would love to see that fixed.
It shows the limitations of screen space graphical hacks. RT isn't just a nice-to-have feature going forward; graphics are getting to the point where screen space artifacts are the ugliest things onscreen.
More power to your channel guys! I love this channel!❤️❤️❤️ see you next year.
Excellent video. Usually my attention span on RUclips for a video is roughly 10 minutes, but not this time.
I thought call of duty came back with a vengeance this year graphically
It definitely did. I'm not the biggest fan of the game but they really did something special with that game and for the first time, a call of duty game has better graphics than any battlefield game. That's shocking to realize considering how long it's taken them to pull off
Hugo Stiglitz Not in every aspect but I do agree that in some areas, Modern warfare exceeds Battlefield graphically
@@HugoStiglitz88 It's not hard to beat Battlefield when Bf5 has worse presentation than Bf1. They focused too much in Ray Tracing and just let everything else pretty much the same. In fact, I would argue animations are worse in Bf5. It doesn't help that the game it's a broken mess.
@@OscarLopezCe BF5 is stunning visually, it's not the best game is the series but presentation wise it's much better than BF1 from the smoke, object density and destruction.
Yeah the thing about BF5 that's just utterly mind blowing are some of the dynamic special effects. The way the wind whips fire, smoke and snow in front of you can be breathtaking at times.

2019 sucked, horrible year. This whole decade sucked honestly.

5:24 - Me, when I'm just a colleague and not a friend.
That moment when a console game graphics surpass those of the PC... Plague Tale looked amazing though, that game snuck by me.
They don't surpass PC, though. If you've seen ray tracing in Control or RDR2 on PC in ultra, you'd know why. He only says that because it's an opinion, much like many things in this video.

I know it's not strictly a 2019 game but the Red Dead 2 PC release has easily some of the best graphics I've ever seen. Playing at 4K it's stunning and with gsync enabled the 40s and 50s framerate is acceptable. Unfortunately you do need both a 2080ti and a 4K gysnc screen, but, if you've neglected to have a child and found yourself with a decent amount of disposable income, it's highly recommended.
Gsync for what freesync works as well
B K that’s why I play at 3440x1440. Nice crisp image that looks better due to the higher aspect ratio but my 2080ti is capable of putting out higher fps than if I was to game at 4K
You don't need a 2080ti; a 1080ti is just as effective.
BlownMacTruck a 1080ti goes well but a 2080ti does it better
Old Mate John Whether it does it tangibly or not is highly dependent on a bunch of factors. That also is beside the point of the original rebuttal.

14:44 If it hasn't already been said, A Plague Tale used Quixel Magascans for their assets. Which was smart. It allowed them to use assets someone else generated and they could focus on other parts of the game.

I'm pretty sure I learned from Alex's video that Asobo used Quixel for A Plague Tale - that's how they managed to have these beautiful materials all over despite only having a small team of artists. They are working on Microsoft Flight Simulator these days, but rumor has it that development for a sequel A Plague Tale is underway.
Not development as such, they're completely focused on Microsoft Flight Simulator. Pre-development has started, i.e. writing the story and storyboards etc but no actual work on the game itself
@@acurisur Unless you have some insider information, that's kind of hard to tell for sure. That being said, the work you describe already counts as development - especially if there is (presumably) some prototyping going on on the side.
I was surprised neither of them knew about Asobo working on Microsoft Flight Simulator. If any game shows off amazing graphics, it’s that game.....and supports their amazing work on Plague Tale.
Surprised Days Gone didn't make the list or Anthem, both are stunning graphically.
