Having good opinions on games
Difficulty: Impossible
Wow no destiny, shill up really putting his foot down saying he doesn't like the state of destiny
Fair play. I literally was like, "Witcher?, What about arcane!".
God of War Ragnarok. It's a fact
Someday you will look into the past and regret being a Kojima fanboy.
My guys, before you relay too much of your thanks to Ralph, make sure not to forget the man behind the curtains: his editor Austin!
Austin, thanks to you as well, for a year of very well put together videos about the video game medium.
It's thanks to you, that these videos aren't just successful as podcasts, but also as videos. It's thanks to your editing, that certain jokes become bearable, instead of being stuck at hair-pulling levels of cringe. Keep doing what you're doing and have an awesome 2023!
I second this notion. Helluva guy that Austin
Nice try Austin
truee, Austin is an absolute legend
Speaking about the absolute legend that is Austin, can someone point me to his YT channel? I remember he did have one and want to see more of his awesomeness, this time not watered down by Destiny 2 commentary 😜
Many thanks
Yeah, Austin is truly the GOAT
please don’t skip “NOBODY SAVES THE WORLD” the writing is super cute, the music is really good and the progression is super addicting!! And that combat is nuts when you start to combine abilities from different characters! Easily one the best indie games this year
Thanks so much for the kind words Bobby. Really happy you enjoyed the game
@@DrinkboxStudios stand out game! One of the favorites and so much replay ability. Hope to see more games like this in the future!
I loved that game. I probably wouldn’t have played it if it wasn’t on gamepass. So glad I had the chance to play it! It definitely put drinkbox on my radar.
Ya, it start off slow but once u start unlocking more classes, oh boy, the fun just ramps up
@@DrinkboxStudios one of my favourite this year.
The fact that i watched a full 42 minute video start to finish and was completely engaged and entertained through every second of it is a testament to how amazing this channel is. I wish i had friends like you in real life, Ralph. Well done, mate.
The fact that i read your entire full two sentence comment from start to finish and was completely engaged and entertained throughout every second of it is a testament to how amazing you are at making comments, I wish i had friends like you in real life, Abdulrahman Muhammad Al Sherbini. Well done, mate.
@@justanuff The fact that i read your fact about my fact is a testament to how facts are amazingly just the facts. I wish i had more friends in fact. Mate done, well. (Thanks fr).
@@justanuff This positivity brought a smile to my face. Thanks for making the world a bit brighter
He's a shill but okay.
agreed
I'm not sure why but I feel like I consume gaming contents less and less each year, yet yours are always one of the few I keep getting back into. I resonate a lot with what you said about how so many contents seem to want to make you angry, or feeling 'clever/better' because they're so above it all. It really makes me appreciate how you always try to articulate your personal thoughts whenever you're being critical of some aspects of a particular game, rather than just being cynical/jaded/condescending about it. It's perfectly clear that you care so much about the video game medium, and your videos have always managed to remind me why I still love it as well. Anyway, thank you for doing what you're doing Ralph (and Austin!), here's hoping for an even better year for you guys ahead!
How the hell do you do this so well. So many year end videos and you manage to deliver something unique with such unexpected profound insights as "algorithm driven rage bait or subscription driven confirmation bias" thrown in for good measure.
Not to mention he does it without being a sellout! Any other RUclipsr would have "You wont BELIEVE what my favourite game of THIS YEAR is!!!" or some other bullshit. Quality and dignity, love it.
True
This simple insight has made me realize just what drives me to spend more time on certain social media sites. Which also apply elsewhere. Thank you Skill Up!
I wasn't expecting such an amazing almost philosophical take, took me to a mental ride for a moment.
@@SirQuantization he plays it safe and is a shil, dont know what you're talking about. lol.
Very cool putting Edge in the video. Been reading it every month for many years and hope to do so for many more.
How do we subscribe?
I started buying Edge again this year and definitely regretted stopping my original sub! Ditto Empire magazine.
@@mamthesh I am also trying to do this... it certainly does not seem obvious!
Thank you again for another year of enjoyable, robust, and very competent gaming-world coverage; you continue to be my go-to media for all things video-game and I love what you’re putting out there 😉
Thank you for playing Outer Wilds theme yet again... regardless of its absence on this years' list of awards, always nice to remember it through its beatiful notes...
Well Ralph, I have not finished the video but I agree completely with your decision to have outer wild take the W for best gaming content for the year once again!
You were so close to being correct
🤣
The OW supremacy has been appropriately acknowledged.
They did release a "next" gen version this year, so, I would let it slide into this year 👍
I actually started getting so giddy thinking Ralph was actually gonna talk about outer wilds. He was the one that recommended it and I gave it a shot, turns out it’s underrated even with all the praise he’s heaped onto it
Absolutely same. Anytime I hear that theme song, it just does something to me. So glad I went in to the game blind based off his recommendation, and I recommend anyone who hasn’t played to to please play it. In my opinion it’s the most important video game ever made.
I started playing it and I was loving it, but it's gonna be removed from gamepass.
I definitely need to buy it in the future.
@@MateusDrake well worth a purchase when you're able.
I never comment on videos, but after watching this (and your content for years), I feel as if I’m obligated to say - you’re all class Ralph, and we’re lucky to have you! Enjoy your break mate
You had me hook line and sinker at 35:00.
Appreciate the work you do, and value your opinions and perspective on the medium. Enjoy your well deserved break.
The segment on print media in this video has to be one of my favorite "shout out" sections of the entire year. I've been deeply craving a dive into other mediums and ideas-I've actually found music as particularly interesting new hobby-but I still wanted something game adjacent. Just looking for something new. Something worth sharing with others. Perhaps picking up some good ol print magazine subscriptions might be a good first step towards doing that.
Thanks Skillup
There is an emerging market for video game OST vinyl releases if you want to bring two hobbies together.
Hello
Sitting down and turning on one of your reviews always makes me happy to be a gamer. Hearing how passionately you talk about games simply makes me want to play more. Thank you for the content, and have a great new year.
I've been a subscriber for ~5 years now, and I truly believe this has been the best of those years for SkillUp content. Thanks to you and Austin for being my go-to source for everything going on in the gaming industry. Also, I think I was just convinced to subscribe to Edge magazine? Really didn't see that coming....
Thanks for an awesome 2022! Your videos and podcasts have helped me through finishing grad school, finding a new job, and moving across the country. Have a great vacation. Looking forward to 2023!
I truly enjoyed this video. Not a moment felt like junk time or empty consumption. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and work Skill Up team put in. Enjoy the break!
Man when that Outer Wilds music started playing I was like here we go again. It should be included every year as running meme now! I also just bought Outer Wilds today so a real nice and funny coincidence.
When was that I missed it
@@erichall090909 35:12
I am so happy that you included other media than just video games! I am so eager to check all this stuff out! Thank you for keeping me up with video game news last year, I look forward for more informative videos 2023! Also you helped me find Outer Wilds, which won played-game-of-the-year 2022 on my list! (Death Stranding and Returnal came close second and third place)
God damn this video is one of the best so far, and let's not forget Austin's editing skills. The soundtrack transitions are TOP-TIER.
Really, really loved the bit about print media. As a kid without internet for a large part of my childhood, magazines here and hearsay on the school yard were my largest source of information and I'll always keep a special place for them in my heart. Online articles and twitter threads will never give me the same enlightening feeling I got after reading through a well-written article that went through review, contrary to something that was fast-paced typing to generate traffic. Keep up the great work SkillUp. I found you through your Nier Automata review and agreed with most of your reviews since then, but I also appreciated the ones were we didn't because as you said, we learn from different places and perspectives. Kind regards from Germany.
I do not understand how you do not have 1mil + subs sir. Your charm, wit, editor (what up Austin) and dedication to this medium we all hold very dear is nothing short of a treat every time you release a video. Here's to enjoying your content even more in 2023!
@SvperMario and the up
Couldnt have said it better myself. Cheers Ralph!
@@violentpursuit Cheers to all. 🍻
And of maybe because of…..😅
I find there's few good RUclips channels with many millions of subscribers, there might be truth in the numbers. Simply there's limited amount of people on this platform who are into mature, measured and well though out essays on gaming and other subjects.
I was so ready for another year of Outer Wilds. I still catch myself listening to its music, feeling feelings I cant describe and certainly havent felt before this game and every shoutout you give it makes my heart jump, weirdly enough.
The most refreshing end of year list I have seen. I'm not sure what others think of the change in format but I loved it. Not only are you giving praise to games most have never heard of but you're using gaming as an umbrella term which allows you to give your thoughts on other media. Really hope to see something like this next year Ralph.
Nobody Saves the World was excellent. I forgot it even came out this year. I suppose that goes to show how quickly this year has passed us by.
I don’t always watch every single video you put out, but I never doubt that each one I toon into is going to be a banger. You’re an absolute legend, mate, thanks for the great content.
Don't worry Shillup. Outer Wilds is my GOTY.
I found out about it because you placed Valheim as #2 last year. And that was my personal GOTY.
It's probably going to stay as the best game I've ever played for a very long time.
Leave it to you to make an original end of the year video full of wonderful surprises. You really never disappoint. Thank you SkillUp for another wonderful year of you. You're definitely in my list of best things of the year every year
man if i made one of these about my 2022/21 finding your weekly recaps would definitely have to be a highlight in both, thanks for all the informative and entertaining content. If there is one thing i know for 2023, its that i'll be looking forward to these every week still.
Ralph, Austin, thank you both for this amazing and constantly great content this year. I wish you both a nice relaxing vacation and a good start into 2023.
If i could make a wish for 2023, i would love to see a "flipped" episode with Austin taking the lead and Ralph cursing up a storm while writing the episode.
Just wanted to say, your voice in the video game space is genuinely refreshing. You strike the perfect balance between legitimate/tough criticism with respect for the creators involved unlike any other commentators. You are very in touch with the events happening in the gaming space but you don’t get embroiled in any stupid controversies. I don’t always see eye to eye with your opinions on games themselves, but honestly that’s just different strokes (where would the fun be in always agreeing with someone anyways? 😋) and you always present a thorough thought process for all of it. In a year where I’ve abandoned a lot of the old commentaries out of sheer apathy, I’ve latched on to your stuff more than any others. Keep up the incredible work and keep being you. You and Austin enjoy your break and I look forward to more great content next year!
As a videogamedunkey viewer for years, I’m so glad I finally graduated to Skill Up for precisely every single reason you just stated.
This year, your videos and podcast have helped me get back into gaming. Thank you for your infectious enthusiasm!
The Outer Wilds plot twist really really got me.
Thank you for all your work.
I played some games that I didn't even think about before you reviewed them. I'm following you since you started with your videos about The Division.
I watch every single video, even if it's about games I don't even care about, because I appreciate your honest work and I enjoy every second about it.
I wish you all the best for 2023 and hopefully all the years that are coming.
You and Kojima have absolutely a point concerning cd's (or vinyl) and magazines.
I have same with movies: Going to a cinema beats Netflix any day of the week and twice on monday evening!
i can see that, but cinema isnt this magical place full of wonder and suprises anymore.
You never disappoint! A great year of content capped by a phenomenal GOTY video. Loved the format. Have a great break 🙂
Your videos have been the best social media content I've consumed throughout the year. Thanks for everything you do, I can't wait for your next one. Happy new year!
I’m always looking for other media to get into thanks for the Kojima podcast and magazine tips! Wishing you a Happy 2023!
another great year for gaming some bangers came out this season also really thankful for your amazing content man hope you have a nice rest now that the year is over
Happy New Year and thanks for providing us all with a great year of content mate!
Thank you Ralph and Austin for another year of amazing videos. I can’t wait to enjoy more content after your guys’ well deserved holiday!
What a fucking treat this video is, thank you Shill Up. This year has been insane and amazing and horrible and it was made all the more beautiful by you, your videos have kept my attention more than any other channel and I wanted to thank you for that.
Happy to see Outer Wilds win goty again
Am i missing a joke by calling him Shill Up?
@@JinchurikiDemon Started off as an insult after some people disagreed with his Cyberpunk review, now it’s become an ironic in-joke term of affection
Thanks for summing up my thoughts perfectly. 🙌
😮😮
@@JinchurikiDemonwell because he’s a shill but his close fans think that’s a good thing apparently?
You are one of the consistent and honest reviewers that I trust. You make me think of games differently as a medium and how they are designed.
Thank you for being a loud voice. I am looking forward to the new year of criticism, review, and new genre/game exposure(s).
Never showed 60fps mode of Sonic Frontiers, made a point to only show the darker time of day in the overworld.
Never mentioned the shader compilation stutters and other bugs in the Ascent.
Didn't think there was anything off with God of War Ragnarok's pacing.
_Praised_ the combat in Plague Tale.
Recommended the Halo Infinite Grindathon
Skill up really is one of them youtubers that's managed to hold my attention longer than most. Great video!
Such a good video. You have such a lighthearted, witty and fun way of reviewing things.
One of my fav part of these "best of year" lists like this one and SuperEyePathWolf's seasonal ones arent the games but instead the game-adjacent media made by industry insiders. Hearing Mr. Up discuss the Kojima podcast and Edge mag really make me want to dive into those things.
Glad to see developer Roll7 shown some love. Rollerdrome and Olli Olli World are both amazing titles. Can’t wait to see what those guys have next.
I think you really hit on some good points about your first experience and the thing I enjoy the most which is exploration. I’ll never forget that harpy singing in the background as I discover a castle walking around with 4 legs the first time in elden ring.
Fantastic video as always brother. I love the new format of including video game culture. I think it's awesome. Can't wait for the new friends per second podcast when y'all are back
Thank you for everything SkillUp! Looking forward to another year of news from you! My indie GOTY was Chained Echoes, which came out of nowhere, and you should really check it out as well.
What an amazing video. The visual presentation, the music, the script, the humour, the quality and variety in suggested gaming-related media to consume. This is top tier content the likes I don't think I've seen before.
Thanks for another amazing year. One of the best channels on the platform and one of the most important for the community. Hope you enjoy the break. See you in 2023!
I admire the effort you put into your videos and this extra thought or two about the topic you cover. It makes them unique and really "journalistic'. This one is pure gold. Keep the awesome work going. Cheers.
Amazing video and I agree SO MUCH about gaming magazines, you've given me the push to resubscribe to Edge. I've also ordered a copy of lock.on Vol 3, and am keeping an eye out for reprints of A Profound Waste Of Time issues 1 & 2. They all look stunning. I WANT slower gaming news with care and love shown to the materials
I really needed this video. My new years isn't going very well and the end of the year has been some of the darkest times of my life. It's been hard to remember the great moments that happened this year because of that. Its so great that you put them all together to remind me and presumably others that it wasn't all darkness, there was some really really great, bright and just fantastic moments, from Elden Ring to God of War Ragnarok, from Arcane (late last year, I had to check, feels like such a long time ago) to Wednesday. I really do appreciate this look at the great things that we were blessed with this year. So thank you!
Great video, as usual. And yes, you got me with Arcane haha I was like wtf!? But then you brought it in lol well played.
Great video. Great year. Great stuff from this channel (including Austin's work!!!) and FPS Podcast all throughout. Cheers and looking forward to tuning in for more in 2023!
Ralph, I'll just say this: thank you for existing and for creating this channel for us. Your channel was one of the highlights of 2022 for me - your talent, your perspective, your passion and respect for gaming as an artistic and cultural expression. You're smart and emotional and honest in all the right ways and I'm glad you're here. Also, shoutout to Austin who is a terrific editor/producer. You both rock.
Some truly historical "other stuff" in video games this year. What an achievement Arcane and Edgerunners are.
I hate Arcane and refuse to watch it. I’ve had this username for *7 years*

So much to love here. Long term EDGE subscriber, you put all the joys I feel more succinctly and eloquently than I ever could. APWOT also a gem, though you just showed me I missed the issue 3 Kickstarter. Dammit! Knew there was a valid reason to stay on Twitter!
Enjoy the break Ralph and Austin, well deserved!
Great video Ralph.
Great list from all across the gaming spectrum.
Great editing Austin.
Have a great break duders.
A great year to come I’m sure.
I literally just finished Outer Wilds and just seeing you mention it in 2022 made me smile like a goof. I couldn't have asked for a better game to finish the year with and this was just the right video to accompany it. You're doing awesome work with a brilliant passion. Best of luck for your future and you have yourself a happy new year!
i hope you also mean that you played the dlc/sequel
Where did he mention outer wilds? I must have missed it?
@@Exel3nce ah no. That's still left. Nice idea for new year's though xD
Would also recommend Signalis. Not enough people talk about this gem. Not only the best survival horror to come out this year but one of the best in the last decade
I really admire your love, enthusiasm, humor and balanced view on every subject you handle. True gem of RUclips.
I love your channel for your unique perspective on whatever you talk about. I also love your end of year videos. Watching you apply your unique perspective to EOY videos was a treat today. Thanks, as always, Shillup!
As someone that watches all your content i really appreciate the angle and perspective of this video. I couldve guessed what were going to be your favorite games of the yr, ive seen every review and there are so many other best game videos that all have god of war and elden ring mentioned in it, the inclusion of the culture is a supremely more unique take on these end of yr videos!
I was sad going into this list because I knew Outer Wilds wouldn't be able to make the list this year. Then I heard the music slowly come in and got absolutely baited. Well played, ShillUp
The feels you have every time you hear the soundtrack... I had the video in background just listening to it most of the time and heard the first quieter bits of the transition, and I was like wait... WHAT?
Got absolutely baited.
How long does it take to get into the game? I played like an hour and was confused and bored.
@@Shinkajothe game is def gonna be confusing to start. Did you leave the starting world and for how long? The game relies on you being curious and interested in what’s happening and what has happened
I missed it when was that
What an incredibly well thought and eloquent video. I'm always impressed by each and every one of your videos. Keep it up!
Super late comment as I just recently found the channel, but I just got to the part about Edge magazine in the middle. Super glad Game Informer added a direct subscription option to support them directly and I am happy to say this channel is one of the reviewing voices I tend not to agree with but still really appreciate the thought out arguments and perspective it provides. Cheers to the team.
That edge magazine add was something else Shill. Almost had me. They should pay you more.
Great video! I really reckon you should make that bit about print media into a video of its own. It's really well written, an important point, and very much needed as a conversation starter.
Oh, and Arcane is not only one of the best game adaptations ever. It may be one of the best shows ever (in it's genre at the very least).
Very glad I found your channel this year. Your content is amazing and thorough. Can't wait for a wild 2023!
Great work this year Mr Up! And big thanks to Austin and the members of the FPS-podcast too!
Thanks for all the great videos this year skillup, looking forward to this week in video games in 2023, all the best for the new year ❤️
The best thing of all of 2022 was you, SkillUp 🥰 you gave us such a great year of content and video game news. I think you’re the only channel where I’ve watched every single video you’ve put up, thanks to the effort of every single one!
I second this! This Week In Video Games is a highlight I look forward to every week, and it's also the reason my steam wish list is now 121 items deep, which almost manages to be depressing. As someone who's been enthusiastic about this medium long enough that I distinctly remember Edge itself being launched, A) it was super cool to see that get a mention, B) the mature approach SkillUp takes to so many gaming-related topics is fantastic.
@@DrViperVideos Yep! 😔
Your videos were the best video game media this year man. Great job.
A very well crafted video! Even if not a single game were to be discussed in the entire video, I think I'd have enjoyed simply listening to you.
This video wins the best "best of" video I've ever seen. There was more here I wasn't aware of but am absolutely interested in than any other video I've seen. Shouts to your production as well.
Just got 100% on Vampire Survivors today on my phone. Didn't spend a penny. Never watched an add. Absolutely perfect
Thank you, Shillup. I've genuinely enjoyed everything you've put out it 2022. I hope you have a wonderful and prosperous new year. You too Austin.

Didn't know about Callisto protocol helix station and now I'm gonna go listen. I hate horror movies but I ADORE triller and mystery audio series like this. Audio experiences like these get me so immersed because since you're only using one of yours senses you start to zone out of the rest of them and it really transports you. Thanks for this gem!
Damn you baited me with the outer wilds segment XD
F-ing amazing video and a beautiful wrap up to the year. I love your content, I resonate with it on a deep level. At the beginning you talked about how a person follows a creator that has a world view similar to theirs and who encapsulates their beliefs and ideas very well. You are that creator for me. Thank you for your videos and for making my gaming experience better this year! I wish you all the best in 2023 and beyond!

Thank you for all the great content this year! Enjoy some well deserved time off!
I deadass jolted upright in my chair and shouted "FOUR YEARS RUNNING!" when I heard the Outer Wilds title screen theme play, and then you broke my heart. I'll never forgive you for this, Shilly.
Thank you for providing so much insight into this industry that gives us all so much joy. This was an awesome year and looking forward to 2023!
I appreciate you striving to mixup the format, but I absolutely loved your Top 10 videos from previous years. They re-energized my interest in video games and I shared them with friends and relatives to show them how many amazing / experimental video games are out there. A lot of the non-game discussion you covered in this year's video seem like they should have their own video or could be put in your other year in review video.
