My Winter Day Hiking Gear List

- In this video I will show you everything I bring for winter day hikes in the White Mountains. This includes what I wear and other gear I may bring depending on the conditions. This pack is primarily for decent days on well trafficked trails. Longer efforts deep into the backcountry or above treeline may require that I bring more gear. As always, you take your safety into your own hands when you venture into the backcountry in winter and must make your own decisions on what to bring.

So true about REI gear. Every time I walk in that place I come out with something. Great information in this vid!!
Thankya, REI is definitely my go-to place for gear.
Very beautiful ❤❤❤lovely ❤❤very interesting ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
And I thank you! 😊
me too on the map~love the pants~♡~
Can't beat a good map!
Awesome video. Love the level of detail for different situations.
Thanks much!
That’s a lot gear! You are awesome at hiking thanks!
Thanks much! Yeah, a lot of gear...but less than what many carry in the winter. There's a balance everyone must find between too little and too much.
Very cool. Thanks for sharing. I kind of wish I lived near the snow.
Thanks - the mountains are only a few hours away but I still hold out hope for a white winter in Rhode Island. It would be nice to have a prolonged snow period again!
Nice Seth. I like that phone cozie ya got there! That's good for winter camping!!
Yessir. The cold weather is definitely coming. Let's get frosty!
Enjoyed this Seth nice flexibility in your gear (paper map 🗺️ good to see that there mate 👍)
All the best Simon 🤠👍🏔️
I've never converted to looking at maps on a phone. Just love the paper ones. Plus my Garmin watch has maps already loaded as well so I can use that as a backup.
@@RhodySeth a nice combo Seth 👍
Good job. Love the cats!!! 😸
They are devils! But cutes ones. 🤨
Great gear video! Liked how you pulled in other clips to show it in use. It’s been a while since I’ve been up north in the winter.
I'm jonesin' seeing all the snow they've got up in the Whites. I needs to get up there!
Great equipment. I also use Black Diamond carbon poles but ones slightly different for running.
Yeah I have a pair of the Black Diamond Distance Z's I use for ultraruns and speed hikes. I like their stuff a lot!
Good gear rundown. Maybe some cold winter day when I can’t be on trail I’ll do a rundown of my load out.
Yeah, I’d like to see it.
Nice winter gear 👍
I'm chomping at the bit to get out there this winter. Couple more weeks...
Got to get the gear!!! Great info vid!!
The problem with gear is that it makes you want More Gear! Thanks for watching!
Great Video.❤
Appreciate it. 🙂
I wish everyone was as safety minded as you. You check all the boxes for safety, fire starter, beacon, map, compass, warm phone, shelter, layers, goggles, mask, traction, first aid...etc. nicely done. I'm curious about the weight. Thanks for sharing, happy trails!
Thanks Greg. 18 pounds total for the pack. Probably on the low end of safety gear compared to some. I wish I had spoken more about weight vs. gear when it comes to safety. Maybe I'll do a follow-up video.
I like that pouch for the phone! Save some battery, I got some good ideas of more gear to bring with me, but I do carry a lot of the same stuff. Great video Seth!
Haven't tried the pouch out yet but looking forward to seeing how it works. This is the time of year where I get really antsy living in Rhode Island. I need them cold mountains!
@@RhodySeth haha yea I could imagine! I'm waiting for it! I want that ground to freeze and get a nice layer of snow on it! It's looking like it's getting there though!
I'm nostalgic for your old janky gaiters of yesteryear. Oh where has the time gone?
I think they're still in the basement somewhere, their dangling and frayed ropes yearning to adventure again.
Those green & orange Darn Toughs are my favorite sock as well. I once wore them on a hike out to meet 2 buddies - they were both wearing them also. At camp another hiker came up to us rocking them too! 4 of us all randomly wearing your favorite sock
Must have been one of the early versions before they started to branch out. Love those Darn Toughs - I've taken advantage of their lifetime guarantee on a couple of my running pairs. The hiking ones have held up very well.
Summiteed Pierce and Eisenhower the other day. Forgot my axe and balaclava fell out of my pack on trail. 🤦🏽
Damn, RIP balaclava. Always sucks to lose gear on the trail.
You have some cracking gear Seth! All the bases covered. It's funny regard your ice axe and crampons as these are used all the time here in Scotland in the winter. I guess it's down to the terrain and the big run offs we have without the trees.... nice gear loadout mate! Paul
Yeah, I made need them up high at some point but so far the crampons have always taken a ride when I've brought them. The Whites gets a ton of snow and the trails to the peak are well trafficked so they get packed down rather well. Spikes have been enough for the most part.
I'm also only getting up there a couple times each winter/spring season so I probably also go out of my way to avoid the sketchiest stuff.
Solid set up - and love your little details! I love how everyone’s pack list is slightly different and unique to their preferences. What is your good weather winter pack baseweight vs longer colder winter treks?
I need to add a compass, and learn more old fashioned navigational skills.
I think it all depends on an individual and what they feel they need for safety vs. weight. My first winter hike was an attempt at Carrigain and I had to turn around after 5 miles - my pack was just so heavy. I probably would have fared better with a pack like in this video, though that would have meant eschewing some of the safety gear I had brought (sleeping bag, stove, etc). It's always a trade-off.
Great stuff! But where do you keep the cat on your hikes?
There's actually a lady who has become well known for hiking with her cat in the Whites. Not sure the cat comes along in winter though...
@@RhodySeth it’s either a cat or bear spray :)
Nothing wrong with REI gear.
Nope. It's good stuff for sure.
