Classic Game Room reviews FIGHTING VIPERS for Sega Saturn from 1996. It's like Virtua Fighter with a bit of the ultra-glam rock. Produced by legendary Sega arcade game mastermind, YU SUZUKI, Fighting Vipers is a treat for fans of the Virtua Fighter series because it is very similar in style while completely outrageous and enjoyably cheesy.
Guys, they've remastered this, Virtua Fighter 2, and Sonic The Fighters for the PSN and XBLA in December 2012.
+Rigicai05 Badass!! VF2 ect on XBLA are arcade versions,so bad compared to saturn versions much superior.The best remix you have to sega games is on ps2(not VF2 not FV,but panzer dragoon and nights into dreams are the best remasterisation all of time)... Remastered versions is a shame.Buy a sega saturn is a best deal.

This game was Virtua Fighter Heavy Metal addition, I still feel like this is the best 3D fighter.
I loved this one better than any other fighting game of that era. It was just fun.
This was one of my favorite games on Saturn. I loved that you could break opponents' armor and beating people with guitars, c'mon! Sadly the Dreamcast sequel never made it to the US. I think because, by that point, we were over hair metal and rollerblades.
I used to LOVE to play this game in the arcade! I had basically forgotten about it until now. Thanks so much for reviewing it! Lots of great memories with this one. :)

I remember when my brother had this game! Ahh what fun times those were.
You also need to review Fighters Megamix at some point too. Combines Fighting Vipers and Virtua Fighter 2 into one game while adding some new moves and elements (like sidestepping) that were going to be in VF3 to the combat system. Buncha hidden characters too like the Hornet from Daytona USA, Janet from Virtua Cop (complete with useable gun), and Rent-a-Hero. You all remember Rent-a-Hero, right? No? Aww...
the Japanese version has Pepsi man

I played a sequel to this game before the first and once I got my hands on arcade F.V. I was surprised how good the original was. I never played this on SS, though.
It reminds me of one of the GREATEST fighting games - Bloody Roar 2, power moves and air recovery work really well in both.
I remember they advertised the hell outta this game back when it was released. CGR Forever!!!!!!!
I remember this being one of those games I never could get my hands on; i thought the game looked really good, the fighter mechanics being so similar to VF meant this game was great.
I remember all the stills and pictures you got for completing this game... being only a young nipper teen, seeing Casndy in all her CG glory was too much at times. Tokio for the win ;)

I played this game more than Tekken 2 and Virtua Fighter 2 when it was in my arcade. Too bad it didn't stay as long as I would have liked. Easily one of my favourite arcade games back then.
And his voice is very soothing instead of angrily shouting all the time.
I honestly think that in every book , dictionary etc that deals with word meanings , that under "Game Review" there should be a picture of Mark & the CGR Logo! Hes just the perfect game reviewer , every review is a masterclass in how to do one,

My Mom bough a Sega Saturn bundle that had all of the popular Sega Saturn games with it, this game was in it(along with Street Fighter Alpha 1,2, Virtua Fighter as well) I can estimate we played this game the most, MORE than the other fightng games mentioned, probably because of its over-the-top presentation, AND the combos were more complex than that of Virtua Fghter's, giving better feeling of accomplishment, the fights were funnier AND you could record the fights as well

Last Bronx, a Fighting Vipers/Virtua Fighter crossover game, is probably the nearest thing to a sequel. It'd be cool if you got hold of that.

Anyone remember Fighter's Destiny for the N64? It was a VF clone and pretty cool. I'd love to see a CGR review.
Just got this game today. Another "So-So" feeling about it. Waited almost a week to get it. Now that I got it, it'll probably be another week before I play it again.

OH YEAH! First game I ever bought for the Sega Saturn, and still one of my all-time favorites. later, i got an early virtua fighter game, but it just wasnt the same. Oh and btw, BAHN FOR THE WIN!
hey mark there is a sequel to fighting vipers! on the dreamcast and its aweosme! you can find it on ebay for roughly 10 dollars or amazon

That's because Honey the Cat actually is based off of Candy. Candy's name in the Japanese release of Fighting Vipers is Honey (no clue why they changed it for the rest of the world). Sonic the Fighters was also a side project developed by some of the Fighting Vipers crew. There's also a Honey the Cat doll in Fighting Vipers opening FMV.
And Mark... You seriously dropped the ball! You're obligated to show someone being punched through the glass and off the elevator stage in any FV review!

Any review that mentions COSMIC. CARNAGE! is a winner in my book. Also, that guy was totally smelling his finger in the intro.

I think we've had enough of the comparaison with Virtua Fighter. Fighting Vipers is NOT a Virtua Fighter 2.0 It's an entire new and short franchise that deserve more than an endless "look alike" Virtua Figher game.

I donated this game. I also donate nights into dreams with 3D controller and Battle Arena toshinden remix and a copy of Radiant silvergun along with a modded saturn to play it on. I hope he reviews those pretty soon.
@kreeddem Yeah I have Fighters Megamix then found this at a flea market, picked it up and realized what's the point? I traded it in a few weeks later. I kept Virtua Fighter 2 though becasue for some reason the music is different in Fighters Megamix.

they usually make quick characters you can send flying around and beat a pro with basic moves. Like chun li VS a character like zangief or e honda.
It's like they made the 1990's into a fighting game.

wow, Radiant Silvergun...thats a big and important review. Another important review is for ICO and/or Shadow of the Colossus (PS2)...i hope they get reviewed soon! i would donate them for review, if they weren.t such cool games.

How about Fighting Vipers VS Cosmic Carnage - for the vectrex?
You know what would be an awesome package? If Sega bundled the first 4 Virtua Fighter arcade games on a disc (PS3/360), and then included Fighting Vipers as an extra unlockable game.

i've been waiting for fighting vipers review since the day you started reviewing virtua fighter. The saturn was king of fighting games back in the day. Review Fighters Megamix next.
@malevolentburrito Very generous. I was thinking about sending one of my three Japanese copies of NiGHTS, but I wouldn't have been able to spare a 3D controller which is pretty much essential for the best possible experience. Props to you, mal!
What I might be able to do instead is find that extra copy of Christmas NiGHTS I have floating around here somewhere. Not sure where that got to...

Honey and Grace are the best characters in the game!
This game actually has a ton of cool moves for each character. You’re obviously a beginner... go to the training menu and look at all the crazy ass moves you can doz

Your assessment at the beginning is strikingly close to the truth. Virtua Fighter wasn't doing as well in the west as Sega was hoping for, so they decided to try and make a similar kind of game that was specifically crafted with the western audience in mind. The result? Same story as Virtua Fighter, it mostly gained traction in Japan.
the barrier breaking looks totally similar to the one in Bloody Roar 2
Talk abou a game that needs to be remake with today's graphics and special FX. Heck, SEGA should just bring out Fighter's MEGAMiX 2 on next-gen consoles.

@lostboy626 Yeah. I remember that I bought the Japanese version just for Pepsiman! At least all versions have Kumachan, that blow-up bear with the hat in the back of one of those stages.

These characters look more like extreme sports enthusiasts (and Chikara wrestlers) than hair metal dudes.
fighting vipers was awesome hundred times faster then VF and tekken if you spend the time learning a few moves its a awesome game on the arcade picky had pepsi sponsership that I wish made to the saturn though the armor breaking was not as explosive as Cosmic carnage it was fun to see again
