    And to think Sony advertised this as a Virtua Fighter killer back in the day.

    PS TOSHINDEN was my first PS game. I remember crowding around the TV playing this with friends thinking, wow it can't get any better than this! A few weeks later I played Tekken for maybe 5 mins until it occurred to me how much better Tekken was.

    This is the game that got me into the Toshinden series. I didn't think it was bad at the same, seeing as how i was around 10 or so. I enjoy the characters and wish they would update this series on a more recent console.

    I rented a Saturn what must have been about 13 years ago and got this game with it. This remains the only game I've ever played on a Saturn lol.

    @SicHerzeleidJuggalo What really made Evil Zone cool was its simple controls and unique story lines for every character (including the final boss). It's certainly not without its faults but there is enough there that really makes it stand out among all of the fighting games out there.

    i remember seeing this running in a store, as a new game on the new Playstation, and i was so awed... and there i was, 'only' buying Knuckles Chaotix for my 32X. (which luckily was an awesome game!)

    This is a port of the Playstation game and has a few additional features. There is supposedly a new game being developed on the Wii titled "War Budokai".

    @gohmifune Why are you telling me this? Mark said it was cheesy, not me. My argument was, if you think BA's voiceacting is cheesy, then VF's is definitely cheesy.
    Personally I think the VA is just bad, but it's not really important. Back then just having VA was a technological leap forward. But the gameplay is all that matters.

  • @VJFranzK
    @VJFranzK 13 лет назад

    Toshinden series takes a while to get into, but becomes good after you get into the way the control timing is. Especially see Toshinden 3 for PSX, where every character has a semi-redesigned clone. There is Toshinden Subaru 4 in Japan, which I've never actually played.

  • @clresseg
    @clresseg 14 лет назад

    One of the first games I ever rented for the PSX was Battle Arena Toshinden. It was pretty fun. Definitely had the cheese factor, although it didn't seem so bad back then (Tekken and VF were still rough around the edges as well).

  • @gohmifune
    @gohmifune 14 лет назад

    @EnigmaHood I wouldn't call it cheesy. VA back then was meant to be serviceable. You get a couple of off-guild actors to the work so you can produce it at a cost that nets a profit. Games weren't meant to be movies back then. Also, it would surprise me if any of the voice work in VF is done in a an English-speaking country.

    Summer of 1995, my brother and 2 neighbor girls played the hell out of it, and we had so much fun, it had so much charm. (Really enjoying the music till this day).

    @Jerrid3 BAT was released in '94 in Japan and '95 in USA, at the time there was KoF '94, MK 3, Samurai Showdown IV, the SF Alpha/Zero Series (not to mention SSTF 2 Turbo released in '94), about the 3D fighters, Tekken was released in '95 and Tekken 2 in '96, there was also Virtua Fighter 1 in '95 and 2 in '96 and Killer Instinct for the SNES in '95 and Killer Instinct Gold in '96 so don't say "looking at it today it looks and plays bad" even back then looked and played bad...

  • @ChevyJP86

    lol ha ha what a steller review mark, and the sarcasm was better than ever in this one! I remember getting this game with my original PS1 back in 96, it was bundled with it, and man looking back on it now......i cant believe i played the hell out of it back then??? but i remember distinctly getting a demo disc with tekken 2 on it and eventually playing the demo more than the full version of battle Arena toshinden.

    If you like original and strange fighting games, try "Evil Zone" for the Playstation. It's a fun, original, story-driven fighter with a unique battle system. It's quite fun as a two-player game and some of the humor is pretty good. Very campy like Battle Arena Toshinden, but much better!

    @OldManMcScrotumFace Good point man. I think that there was actually a lot of bad quality stuff in the days of retro like there is now, but there are lots of weird retail/developer differences nowadays such as the introduction of DLC, pre-order exclusive content, the importance of online, and so on. I feel there have been some amazing games this generation, and some equally amazing games from the retro era. Good games will always be good, while bad games will always be bad. To me, at least. :)

    @Splangy1 He did underrate it. It's difficult to review an old 3D fighter by today's standards because they were all pretty bad relatively speaking. Comparing this to that crap fighting game on the jaguar with Haggis is just not fair. I think Mark is trying a little too hard to get a laugh on this review.

    @LewdCrudeTattoo I see you trollin'. If you actually read about this channel you'd realize that he does mostly classic game reviews, and modern games every now and then. There are plenty of modern game reviewing sites out there, and little classic game reviewing people. It's important to have a good balance of the two (and fortunately for us, Mark does both, just more classic games or not well known games...which is why I subscribed to this channel in the first place. And because Mark is win).

    Mark, this game isn't the original Battle Arena Toshinden. The original didn't have the cheesy cutscenes, but in all fairness almost all voiceacting back then was cheesy. Hell to this day Virtua Fighter 5 STILL has cheesy voiceacting. This wasn't a game that was so bad it's good, it's actually a decent game. It's just a shame that it never really came into its own after the PS1/Saturn era like Tekken and Virtua Fighter did.
