As a casual teacher, I've started looking for examples of Colonel Potter's leadership. Compassionate, fair but says it how it is. The more I've practised that style, the less rubbish I've had in classes each day.
Even though it was written as a comedy, I think at times the writers actually had the US Army Officer's Guide by their desk as a reference for writing COL Potter.
Colonel Potter losing his temper is one of the funniest things imaginable... provided one is not on the receiving end of his boot going up your backside, of course.

I hated Henry Blake. Potter felt real. The latter MASH was better. More grounded to the real world. I was young and didn't appreciate it as much and one scene gave me nightmares that hit deep down.
"I'd love to stay an' chat, but I have a water crisis waiting. Dismissed." That's a commander. Dedicated enough time to this problem - on to the next! (And there's always a next.)

Potter was so much better than Henry. nobody respected Henry even Radar would steal from him. Potter was a no nonsense commander his voice alone told you he meant business.
Henry was no commander. He had no military discipline. Everybody loved him as a father, not as a leader. On the other hand col. Potter was a man of military with both his body and soul.
They had different command styles. Blake saw his job as first and foremost running a hospital. As long as the men and women under his command did their jobs under fire or in the surgery, he did not care what they did, within reason however, what they did off time. Potter, however, was tough but fair. He wanted his command to at least look military all the time and shape up a bit. You are right that Blake was not respected. He was the fun dad that was too indulgent with his kids. Potter was the tougher grandfather or uncle who realized that his kids needed direction and a more hands on approach. Thus the latter earned the others respect.
Ladies and gentlemen, the difference between Blake and Potter. Blake would just fumble about and get pushed around by the happenings of the 4077th. Potter, on the other hand, gives the 4077th a generous but clearly limited range of room to fool around in and has no problem pinning the entire outfit to the ground if it steps too far out of line.
An ex-boss of mine seemed to think that Captain Picard was the embodiment of leadership. I postulated that Colonel Potter was actually a much better leader in all respects.
Except he really doesn't. The issue was that Father Mulcahey was helping the girl prep for her pre-med exam, and she misunderstood some signals and came onto him, which he very awkwardly turned down. And that hurt her feelings. Unexperienced and clueless about what to do, he confided in Hawkeye. Hawkeye tried to straighten out the issue by talking to her, but she misunderstood his intentions and got mad, believing everyone in camp knew. And Margaret was just Margaret. A hardass who told her off for minor things one too many times. So basically the solution is for all three of them to talk to her, and get her to understand that none of them have it out for her.
Henry Blake would have been pleading with these guys to sweep the issue under the rug. Shows the difference in characters. Also how the tone of the show shifted after Season 4.

I always hated that about her character that she could get away with insubordination just by going higher up. She wouldn't stand for her nurses going above her head.

Hawkeye, Hotlips, and Father Mulcahys have a mess they need to fix this or Harris walks. Hawkeye will become her mentor, Hotlips will be her adviser, and father Mulcahys will be her spiritual leader. I hate to see good talent walk out the door but they need to fix this quick.

Without the laugh track, M*A*S*H is 10x as funny, because the jokes come off so dry. A smirk instead of a har har. Much more Groucho-like.
