In December 1955, during a tour of the United States, Oistrakh performed Shostakovich's Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 99 at Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Dimitri Mitropoulos. The press was enthusiastic: "The most beautiful violin concerto heard in New York since the last war" wrote the Times Magazine; "All the aspects of a masterpiece" noted The American Record Guide; "Oistrakh's mastery is fully revealed in this work" wrote The Richmond Times-Dispatch...
It is because the work is superb and that Oistrakh feels completely at ease. So much so that he will return to it several times, either with Mravinsky or the author at the desk, or with his son, holding the baton for him. Thanks to his free and sure bow, the work - premiered on October 29, 1955 in Leningrad - reaches the purest summits, radiating with life, solar clarity, sovereign in every way. How nobly Oistrakh can sing in the initial Nocturne, exploiting all the registers of the violin and the double-string writing! How "evil, demonic, thorny" he can be - in his own words - in the Scherzo! If the violin part in the Passacaglia appears less prominent, the essential remaining in the dialogue with the orchestra, the solo instrument finds on the other hand all its plenitude starting from the great cadenza which is linked to the final Burlesque, a popular festival of an irresistible spirit, and which seems to be led by this great organizer of pleasures, Oistrakh! Oistrakh in his prime and the great Evgeny Mravinsky playing Shostakovich, simply unbelievable and sublime.

One of the best russian concertos by one of the best russian violinists, this is one of the best recordings for sure, thanks!
the best. nobody has ever come even close to Oistrakh's performance
THE BEST PERFORMANCE EVER!!!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!
Though I'm not sure I've heard this piece before today, I've listened to enough Shostakovich that the DSCH motto in the Scherzo really jumped out at me - "Well, hello again!" Apparently, this was the first time Shostakovich used it in a piece. Just a fun fact for the day. :) Thanks for sharing this amazing performance!
SPETTACOLARE!!!
Whoever reading this, I pray that God visits your home today with Healings, Blessings, and Miracles. Amen.💕wish you all good health and a good day 🙏🏻💋💚🙏🏻💋
Thanks and the same for you!
Super fabulous!!!
A beautiful performance by David Oistrakh. It's a pity Heifetz never recorded this concerto, like many other concerto's of the 20th century, I get the impression it just wasn't his milheau.
In addition to Shosty I really wish Heifetz recorded Bartok 1, Bartok 2, and Barber. But he did many other 20th century masterpieces including Walton, Prokofiev, Korngold, Goldmark, Elgar, and Sibelius.
Heifetz probably didn't like it. It is a VERY dark & depressing piece of music.
Wow!
I heard him play this in London at the Royal Albert Hall in 1966. The concert of a lifetime. Does anyone have any other information about this concert?
The Violin Concerto No. 1 was, in fact, Op.77, not 99. Shostakovich's Op. 99 was a film score.
good catch!
I'm here just to tell you guys to turn on the subttitles
Am I the only one who doesn’t like this recording? I’m not hating on oistrakh because I’ve listened to his other Shostakovich recording which is amazing but this one is just not it
Actually, I feel this "one of the best Russian concertos "is the recording of a basketful of hungry cats fighting desperately for the opportunity to catch a screaming rat - totally unnerving and un-enjoyable, rather disturbing. Stone me but I'm fleeing fast from this, never to return. Enjoy if you can!
Than maybe you should switch to other works for him, if it is to modern for you.
Oistrakh has literally one the softest bow hands to ever exist.. russian school means to play every note with absolute beauty and expressivo even in terror
